Top Star Trek Games of All Time by Seven of Nine - Mon, 28 May 2012 18:15:30 EST ID:ab3wsPrZ No.27838 Ignore Report Quick Reply

Here we discuss and debate the best ST video games of all time.

My personal list, which I think a number of people will agree with.

  1. Star Fleet Academy (PC)
  2. Star Trek 25th Anniversary
  3. Star Trek Elite Force
  4. Star Trek Bridge Commander
  5. Star Trek TNG: A Final Unity
  6. Star Trek: Judgement Rites (25th Anniversary Sequel)
  7. Star Trek Elite Force 2

Rational:

Starfleet Academy was a fantastic game which was ahead of its time with its release in the 90s... Combined full screen cinematic (pre-rendered) with acting from the original cast, as well as having a fantastic speech from Kirk in the opening scene. Had the best elements of the "non-violent"/"risk is our business" approach to Star Trek along with ship-to-ship combat almost on par with Bridge Commander (non-modded anyway).

Star Trek 25th Anniversary (applies to "Talky" version, with full voice-over of the entire original cast). A fantastic game and Star Trek experience, combines the mystery, atmosphere and peaceful exploration elements of Star Trek. The full voice over is what makes the game a great one... Also very challenging. You go on actual Star Trek away missions which feel like episodes of TOS.

Star Trek Elite Force -- needs no explanation -- Good game despite it being largely Voyager based (not necessarily a bad thing as it fits well with the Voyager atmosphere) ... I downrated it from the number 1/2 spots as I feel the first two games are more true to the Star Trek ideal then Elite Force (which is basically a shooter in Star Trek style; although its a good time)

Star Trek Bridge Commander -- Obviously the modding, its also a pretty great game to begin with... However, it doesn't go much beyond simple combat, and doesn't have the awesomeness of Star Fleet Academy where the cut-scenes in-between brought more to the game then just the gameplay. (At least IMO)

TNG A Final Unity -- Basically Star Trek 25th Anniversary with the TNG cast, unfortunately I have never played it due to the fact it is exceedingly rare and very hard to get running even with DOSbox.

ST: Judgement Rites -- Basically more missions for 25th Anniversary, very good game as well, with full Talky version being the best. This was the last time Deforest Kelly ever played the character of McCoy as he died shortly there after, also one of the last appearances (if not the last) of Scotty as well. Worth playing.

Elite Force 2 -- Good game all around, has Picard, Reg Barclay, etc. Not as prolific as the first game however, but good graphical improvements, and good gameplay.

Opinions?

glad you enjoy it. I agree it was released as junk and has seen some improvement since then. but imho its still a bad trek game and an especially bad mmo.

to each their own. I still log-in from time to time for some space pvp, but with carrier spam, c-store console spam, and broken mechanics, I find myself doing that less and less.

Im more surprised SFC:Orion Pirates or Armada II didnt make the list.

I recently got this to run perfectly on windows 7 using DOSbox and these instructions:

I bought it back when it came out. One of my favourite ST games. It feels just like an actual episode.

ST:TNG Birth of the Federation which is basically Master of Orion

And Star Trek Armada which is basically every RTS game since AoE.

I find it really sad that most of the Star Trek games focus on space flight rather than planetary exploration. When will we get a good open world fps/3rd person Star Trek game with character customization and shit? I don't want to play fucking Eve or Micromanagement Simulator 3000, I want to god damn explore the galaxy with my own eyes and not some space-view of a tin can floating around.

Too many posts to reply to, but a quick STO opinion.

I got suckered into the hype and preordered it, but never even played past the first month. It was hilariously buggy and was more of Trek-skinned space combat sim with godawful ground combat.

Having tried it again, im enjoying it more than I did before. The ground sections are still pretty bad, but the ship combat remains entertaining enough. It still doesn't have that exploration and diplomacy spirit, but the whole player-made missions thing and some of the "story" lines are enough to get a fix. That, and im a sucker for crew customization.

Oh god that was way longer than I expected I apologize

MMO's by nature are extremely ambitious in game design. But other than that its got the biggest combination of land and space combat features in any ST game. It's story is pretty big too, as long as any normal star trek game and longer than most.

Mark II equipment is very low level equipment. You'll only be using it from levels 2-10. The tier-1 Streamrunner is in the same boat. The only real benefit is the tier-5 Streamrunner, which is good, but there's better out there. For $10 you might find it worth it, but it's not necessary.

Guilty, too. Hell I even went all in and bought a TOS Constitution-Class and an Excelsior as well. Both served well in the earlier levels, and a decent buy to me. Then again, maybe I'm just a sucker for TOS.

Unfortunately the only other "game over" scene is the Enterprise pulling into a Starbase. You get that one if you let too many redshirts die. If you let too many senior officers die, you get the one with Picard crying. To get the one with him on a slab well.......

I think the first Trek game I've ever played was DS9-Crossroads of Time and despite the difficulty and clunky controls I genuinely enjoyed it.
Elite Force was surprisingly good too. EFII started horribly and I was getting seriously bored with it until I was allowed to shoot at humanoids... then it became awesome. Still, the hunt for secrets was disturbing the gameplay and I couldn't get rid of that quake feel.
BoTF was dumb and unrealistic with all that upgrade bullshit and constant crashes. If I already know how to build lvl5 buildings why would you force me to start from lvl1 ones even in newly colonized planets? That's like building a house from mud, then rebuilding in from wood when I could've built it using bricks in the first place. At least there was a mod for this. Damn, I hate micro, predefined building rules would've been nice like in Master of Orion III.

Strangely the only one I've played is ST:O. I played for a good 10 hours but didn't feel particularly absorbed in it and uninstalled.

>Go to X system and scan 5 Y's
>Go to X planet and kill 8 Y's
>Go to X base and uplink 3 computers
>etc

Add some PvE grinding for dilithium and repeat ad nauseum. I wouldn't mind if the gameplay were fun but it's pretty standard MMO auto-attack fare that gets old the millionth time you press fire all weapons.

I'm going to check out some mentioned ITT because it's weird that I've never played any.

Reading my mind. I've always wanted some of that 3D, third-person exploration. Something mixed together like Phantasy Star Universe and Star Ocean though avoiding anime graphics and going for something realistic with the added on kicks of a Beat 'Em Up type. Smash some face, explore the universe, great plotline. I would buy the fuck out of it. nb

Not a real game but a game I would LOVE.

It's like Europa Universalis. Basically, you can pick historical times in Trek, like TOS era, Praxis exploding, TNG, Dominion War etc. Or you can start at some early pre-Federation date and try to dominate the galaxy. You can pick any faction like, Romulan, Klingon, Federation, or smaller ones like Gorn or Tholians and try to change history. Additionally, you could pick the Borg or Dominion and conquer your quadrants in anticipation of the eventual meeting with the Alpha quadrant powers.

Each race would have its own profile, like the Klingons would be all about conquering and war but not very scientific or diplomatic and bad at espionage. Whereas the Romulans would be excellent at espionage and mediocre at the rest. And the Federation would excel at diplomacy, you get the idea.

I'm thinking you could do things like pre-federation choose Vulcan and form the Federation with them as the main species instead of Humans, and change things like that. Or even form the Terran Empire as the humans. Or play as Bajor and repel the Cardassians and then invite the Dominion in and ally with them to conquer the Alpha quadrant.

Of course, you'd need to make up a bunch of new species to conquer, or voluntarily join the Federation. And new events, anomalies and crises in addition to the ones we know in canon.

Crazy things are going through my mind with this. I want it so bad.

My mind is aflutter with insane cool shit you could do with this game.

Imagine playing as the Kazon, or Hirogen in the Delta Quadrant. Starting in the 2100s and building a huge empire (and possibly losing it instantly as the Krenim lol).

Or the Ferengi and use your vast resources to constantly play all the powers off of each other. Like if you're trading dilithium to the Romulans and Klingons and they're at war. You could cut off trade with whichever side is winning to even the odds and then resume trading with them to prolong the profits.

Or the Borg could get shittier if they assimilate shitty species, so picking and choosing who to assimilate and who to ignore would be a big part of their game.

I'm thinking there would be 6 basic attributes ranked 1-10 that make up a race's profile. 1) Science 2) Warfare 3) Technology 4) Espionage 5) Diplomacy 6) Trade.

The Federation would have 8, 8, 9, 2, 10, 2
Klingons 4, 10, 5, 5, 6, 5
Romulans 6, 8, 6, 10, 6, 2
Cardassians, 5, 7, 5, 9, 7, 7

ok thats enough thanks for indulging this stoned posting

I guess at least Perfect World has figured out that people don't enjoy being almost literally buried in dropped suckerboxes. While I was playing I had a fire I put out drop a suckerbox. A Gods Damned FIRE. You could shoot down heavy plasma torpedoes and they would drop suckerboxes.

And while you were playing they constantly put up fly by messages in the middle of your screen yelling that someone had won shit from a suckerbox.

I also had an idea for a Star Trek game, based around the Borg. You would control a cube, and move it around the galaxy assimilating planets and ships at a trade-off between advanced technology and stealth. Assimilating pre-warp planets would just net you a few crappy drones but not attract much attention, but assimilating Vulcan for example would set the whole federation on your ass but if you could pull it off would give you a massive advantage. You could expand the cube with new technology and order drones about to repair systems and board enemy ships etc. eventually becoming so powerful you can go full Wolf 359 if you play it right. The end goal being of course to assimilate the entire galaxy.

I tried to think of a way of making it without breaching copyrights or getting licenses but it'd be so damn obvious.

You could play as the Andorians and, with a lot of luck and skill, conquer the Vulcans with the help of the Humans

Exactly. You could do crazy things like that. Me wantie so bad.

I feel like Trek is such a wide variety of themes and ideas that most games just can't capture all of it so they feel empty. There have been a few good ones. I also think a game that's set up sort of like Mass Effect would work well too. You talk to your bridge officers for intel, go to planets, do away missions. Add in holodeck malfunctions for kitsch value and you'd have a really fun game. Oh and a good fucking story too.

Welp, gettin' mah necro bump on...

Star Trek Conquest for Wii is pretty fun. Its strategy with an arcade style battle mod for conflicts. Took a minute to get used to it, but pretty cool nonetheless.

I suggest putting it on HARD.
