Agree on all points. Even through the Orville is more thoughtful and consistent it's not as flashy. I just hope Seth has enough pull to get a second season. If it was anyone else at this point, with the ratings it is getting, it would probably already be doomed.

Even though I really want it to I don't think it will get a second season. If it does it could likely go several seasons. Unfortunately its on Fox if it was on something like the CW it would get at least 2-3 seasons. If we're lucky maybe another company will buy the rights and keep it going on another channel like TBS did with American Dad.

STD already has a second season confirmed but it was confirmed before the show even started. I think its pretty likely that there will be no season three. They might be able to do it if they move it to Netflix completely or air in on TV but I don't see it going for longer than that if nothing changes.

The best that could happen would be if Netflix told CBS we're not paying for this crap anymore and picked up Orville instead. It would probably do a lot better there than on Fox. Hell, Amazon just might actually pick it up. They just put a ton of cash into developing Sci-Fi shows and are currently developing adaptations of Ringworld, Snowcrash, and Lazarus

Well the best best thing that could happen, though completely unrealistic, is for Orville to get several seasons and when STD gets to the mirror episode someone from the "mirror" universe comes over and sees what the Discovery crew is doing, tries to stop it, gets trapped there(likely in Lorca's brig), and has to find their way back.

In the end of the two part mid-season finale the crew of the Discovery destroys the entire universe fucking with the space fungus with the mirror universe character just barely escaping back to their universe which is revealed to be the true prime universe and we start completely fresh with good Trek from there on out.

MAYBE a single crew member escapes back to the "mirror" universe with them. Maybe its Lorca and he goes on a one man mission to start shit and get revenge on the Klingons with the prime crew of the USS Discovery trying to stop him kind of like the Tom Riker episode from DS9.

The season finale ends with him being captured by the Discovery. Maybe 3-4 season of great Trek later he escapes and briefly pops up stirring up trouble kind of like S31/obsidian order in DS9 but never more than a single episode, random off screen mention, or the occasional 2 parter.

>adaptations of Ringworld

Does that mean we're going to get Sense8 levels of rishatra between all those weird homonids?

But Christ, I hope FOX doesn't cancel The Orville. If it keeps going as strongly as it is, I want this to mature over multiple seasons.

>Which do you like better?
Orville, which is really just TNG/DS9/VOY season 22.
>Which has more interesting characters?
Orville has more characters that I care about.
>Which is more like Star Trek?
Orville. STD is too far removed and derivative of other work.
>Which do you think will survive longer without cancellation?
Discovery will have a season 2 but it have nothing to do with this shit.
>Which is more like Galaxy Quest?
Orville.
>Which is more like Star Wars/Game of Thrones?
STD.

>Which do you like better?
The Orville. I'm really enjoying every episode, and I've been pretty invested in the plots of the episodes so far.

>Which has more interesting characters?
The Orville's characters aren't very exotic, for the most part. I find they're comfortable to watch, and it's easy to get a handle on how they are. After 4 episodes, I think pretty much every viewer can describe the characters by their personality traits, and other viewers can recognize them. Except maybe the guys at the con, but it's also the point they're a lot alike. Discovery revolves around Micheal Burnham, who I'm finding to be unlikable. The other characters seem equally forced, except for Saru. The actor playing Lorca is doing a good job of portraying the character, but again the character is unlikable. The actress playing Micheal isn't doing a very good job, IMHO. Some STD characters seem promising, but with the focus on Micheal, they're not getting any real screentime.

>Which is more like Star Trek?
The Orville. No real surprise there. Star Trek has an ensemble cast, so does the Orville, while STD focuses on one character. Star Trek focuses on one premise in an episode, usually with strong supporting cast, so does The Orville, while STD seems to have the same broad focus over multiple episodes. The Orville is generally optimistic and examines interpersonal issues, while STD is more dark and focuses in character conflict.

>Which do you think will survive longer without cancellation?
I hope The Orville. Seth has a lot of pull, and it's his passion project. I don't think STD will last beyond two seasons. It seems a lot like other series that last about that long. Ron Moore's Helix springs to mind as another dark sci-fi project with a Trek connection.

>STD already has a second season confirmed but it was confirmed before the show even started.

That was a promotional tactic. Only an idiot would commit to a second season before any ratings had come back for the first season. They did the same 'announce the sequel before the current project opens' for Star Trek Beyond and once that bad opening weekend was announced all official talk of a sequel dried up faster than Denise Crosby's post-Trek career.

Netflix has zero control over production.

Honestly, it was kinda dumb for them to commit so hard to something have zero control over.

CBS. Netflix is a customer who got gouged on a defective product that they can't return.

Lol, I doubt it. There isn't a ton of rishatra in the books really. As much as I love Trek, Niven's Known Space is by far my favorite universe and I think its got a ton of potential for TV/movies.

The obvious is a Ringworld/Of Worlds movie series but you could also do a Man-Kzin wars anthology yv series, a Gil the Arm Hamilton procedural space cop show, a Tales of Beowulf Shaeffer series with some Sigmund Ausfaller thrown in on occasion as a lead up during the break between the 3rd ringworld movie and the first Of Worlds movie, and maybe even a Protector/Brenanmoster 2 part tv miniseries. Marvel and DC have more movies/shows going right now than that and these could actually be great and there is plenty of good social commentary already written in so you wouldn't really have to worry about it being written in terribly. There are certainly enough well developed characters, planets, colonies, etc to be able to do it.

Interesting you should say that, because the guy who played the Klingon lawyer in DS9 has a role in the upcoming episode of The Orville. I don't think there has been a single episode without someone from Star Trek involved, thus far.

Personally I really enjoyed episode 3, but whatevs.

Well I gotta be 100% honest.. I really liked the Mudd time loop episode in STD and it gave me hope that there might be a chance for that show.. but Orville hasn't really had a single bad episode yet. Now that we're at a point where there's no more STD til next year, I gotta say Orville clearly wins.. BUT Discovery seems to be trending in a better direction..maybe.

Effectively, I think having both shows airing at the same time will force competition, just like in the days of B5 and DS9.. I would definitely argue that in those days both shows were made better by the other's existence. Maybe the Orville's successes so far can help to light a fire under the asses of those making Discovery. Maybe.

Also I watched an interview about that Staments mushroom man they named Lt Sassygay after.. he was on Joe Rogan. It was very interesting but it just served to reinforce how awkwardly STD integrated ideas he had into their show. I mean they could have improved the whole delivery of their batshit spore fantasy with just a few lines of dialog when Tully dropped the F bomb

the Orville is like space Styrofoam, it just copies TNG, oh we land on space Alabama heading towards a sun, oh we crashed on a planet raved by war, oh a robot cough cough Data cough cough learning about humans.

I watched TOS when it first came out and I speak Klingon so I can Objectively say that anyone who like the Orville is a sister fucking retard

the hobo clowns being hungry was pretty damn funny but I'm not going to admit it.

Oh wow I didn't realize that was copying Data. Wow you're really smart. Now that I notice because you pointed it out I can tell they were trying to be really subtle about it so that only the smartest and most observant Star Trek fans would notice.
