Is SYN actually dead or is this some kind of weird internet joke?

If he is, my condolences. We lost a good member of this communiteh.

Respect the dead please.

If syn wanted 24 hours of surprise and disbelief upon his passing then he would have made that clear while alive.

Let the dead have their rest.

Why be so aggressive?

Every single person who visits this site clearly sees the message and will most likely be curious to who the person was. I do not know who he was but I am curious about who he was and how he impacted the community. I am not curious because I am interested in the newest gossip but because as someone who visits this site frequently I feel a bond with the other members of the community. So even if someone does not tell me who he was or what kind of impact he had on the community, I send my condolences to the people that knew him and his family.

A meme apparently. An opportunist's wet dream. A bold indicator that human life is not respected on the boards except to service fortune-finders and reprobate judgments. A case not isolated but indicative of our shortcomings. A miner for a heart of gold. An escape artist out of the limelight, finding soveriegnty among his family. Then you too should forget his name and respect a life passing by, untethered to your mortal opinions.

He said in one thread that he noticed something funny going on with his skin in one spot, but it didn't seem serious so he didn't get it checked out due to lack of insurance, as well as being preoccupied with work, drugs, etc. By the time he started having symptoms that couldn't be ignored and saw the doctor, it had already metastasized to the point of being incurable.

Yeah I was talking to him on irc about it when he first mentioned the symptoms and was asking if he should go to the hospital. He was hesitant because of financial things and not wanting to be a strain on his family. Everyone urged him to go, of course. but it's so sad that he would even second guess it because of financial stuff.

Cancer is far too complicated of a disease to go blaming health insurance on someone's death from it. That's some real elementary-school level conclusions. But I get it, everyone needs a narrative to blame that's easy to wrap their heads around.

Just saying ... cancer is probably the most complicated and enigmatic disease known to man. No amount of money in the world can save you from it's complete and utterly unpredictable nature.

I could be wrong sicne I drink alot when IRC browsing, but I think he was complaining that the hospital that could have saved his life basically gave him the boot for not having the right coverage for their treatments. Sorry if that's fake news, blame booze.

Syn complained a lot about a lot of things on IRC. Who the hell knows what he said.

I had a grandfather who had skin cancer, and they treated it, and it went into remission. He was fine for years, then one day it became brain cancer and he died 3 months later. Cancer is a sneaky bitch and we as humans genuinely don't have the slightest clue about how it works.

Remember: 30 years ago, cancer was a 100% death sentence. You could've been a member of the Rockefeller family and cancer would have still killed your ass dead within 6 months.

Albert Cligglefone - Fri, 16 Feb 2018 14:26:53 EST ID:wedcG9x6 No.242807 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I think you're posting from 1970 or overstating things a bit. We're slowly getting a handle on it (survival rates have increased from 24 to 50% in the last 30 years, ie since 1978)

We know it's defective cells mass producing (in part due to the defect) and we have identified external factors which make it occur. I think we have a fairly good idea about the mechanism that causes it. However because they are many and complex and we can't avoid them all pinning down exactly when cancer happens is hard.

I think it's pretty common knowledge that cells accumulate genetic damage or can even start a bit fucked up and while we don't know what makes "enough" when a substantial amount of relevant instructions (though I don't think we know how to identify which those are) are damaged then a cell becomes cancerous. As such the damage accumulates throughout life as damage can be passed on (and this is why it's more common in the old, but as it can still happen in the young). However I knew most of the top of this off the top of my head (and fact checked it before posting).

We're closing in on cancer, it's not something entirely beyond us, for example that your grandfather had cancer indicated he was more likely to get it again than he was the first time. Cancer was probably a lot of "Old age" deaths back in times gone by. But yes, considering how many people it kills we it's quite enigmatic. We understand it well enough to know Syn was really unlucky to get it. Shit sucks.
