Frank Miller's run on Daredevil introduces Bullseye, Kingpin, and Elektra. Start there for backstory and origins and then I doubt there's much chronology, you can prob bounce around. He likely dies and gets resurrected a bunch of times like all Marvel villains.

Actually, Kingpin might have been already established in Spider-Man by another writer, but Miller fleshed him out and created the other two characters.

Kingpin had been a well established Stan Lee-era Spider-Man villain long before Miller took over Daredevil.
But I guess Miller is responsible for molding him into the iconic, cold blooded, scheming, shadowy boss of literally all criminals in NYC, who remains beyond the reach of law enforcement. Before that, he was just a generic mob boss/supervillain character who just happened to be big and fat with a fancy white suit.

Yeah, I should have known that, I recently read Kingpin's very first appearance in a Spiderman comic by Stan Lee. I was baked when reading, but I'm pretty sure the Green Goblin was somehow involved. Also, Peter lays some heavy fat-shaming in his jibes, no wonder Kingpin is always so angry.

I think we should get a new chapter during spring.

they advertised this chapter having a color cover, but they covered up 70% of it with text, ads, and pinup girls. lol. good chapter though, I wish mangastream wouldn't filter the art so badly but at least this means we get chapters translated the day of instead of waiting for evil genius to get the raws themselves, which used to be a week or more sometimes. but man I would love to see this chapter's art without the blurry filter mangastream and other scanners use cause the imagery was incredible. I especially liked those femto manta ray flag things

funny how the closer they got the less subtle the symbolism got. giant apostle dickipedes and a forest of organs corpses and needles. but then at the center, it's just this simple bramble mountain, which manages to be the most ominous thing so far. whenever next chapter comes in winter, it's gonna be the darkest one of this arc.

>she doesn't want to be saved. She's pretty much dead.
that's definitely true on some level, but the tiny casca and the dog guts seem to represent her remaining attachment to living. I think tiny casca wanting to hang out with farnese now instead of inside the coffin speaks for that.

that said, they are far weaker elements that the rest of what's going on in casca's mind, that's why she's so tiny and the guts dog is so beat up (though that also represents her watching guts basically killing himself to protect her all these years). finishing the job is gonna be the hardest part of this arc.

Let's say Marvel hires you tomorrow to fix the X-Men. (think DC Rebirth in response to the New 52)

In the current world of Marvel comics
  • Where should the X-Men -- and mutants -- be in the greater Marvel landscape? Any big picture ideas?
  • How many books (solo & team) should there be?
  • How many teams should there be in-universe?
  • What kind of writers / artists would you be hiring?

X-men should literally be if The Marvel universe was a picture in the top two corners and weaving down like an X and cross each other. There details in the center highlight the sa,e contention or connection they experience in knowing the, selves. And they meet as the martyr and fear that they as the manifestation of not accident/intention/superlative, or cosmic/radiation/alien, but of DNA/genetics. The uncontrollable that makes us different the heroic od of coping, not the perception of onself through the struggles of power and responsibility and loyalty and self madeness like Spider-Man. Not having to work through something that boxes you in that you box out of, not identityand category or the underdog and the chase. The youth and the dream. No the other, and perceiving yourself as it. not as outcast struggling out of categories inflated but perceived as normal, or always having had come from position of the other know going against a thr shelf that says you cannot self doubt anxiety Spiderman outcast.

The biological peripherals of the marvel universe that actually shape and hold the picture steady as well as influence it positively, by being the thing fluctuating even on a biological or even quantam level as in the dna itself. Just as they are mutants.

As they are like the literal interest but just as true in a misunderstanding they are that for fear a literal scapegoat or imagined evil for what is at the center that can't see the origin points fully at the far corners. A subject that haunts the x-men themselves. they face uncertainty that haunts individual heroes in personal crisis and isolation as collective but not always as community. As the gaze of the other but also as the realization of the other through activation or awakening of mutant powers, some handle that differently. Some become like nieztzhe and believe in an epitome or an uber for which they can strive like magneto others don't go through the extremes in process and life for the end or risk it either, instead knowing they have that future underway through a process like Socrates like Xavier.

Being the and building the constants and axioms and in a sense the shared world itself for those who have experienced.

They must always express that in their tie in to the big events they as flux have established or discovered a link or made known to either the reader or the world a way in which that uncertainty or unknown was apart of a building block or stability or heavilynfeatured aspect of the universe. Kind of like getting closer and closer to realizing your whole life is a pathos told by Wolverine's odyssey where the very realtynof that journey is questioned for Wolverine. Big events in Marvel should see that figure who has not only experienced the fluctuations of mutant ability and himself as the other in terms of animal and his journey in coping with, celebrating, and thriving with that, bit in terms of fluctuations in self awareness and transfiguration of self.

And even knowledge of that even being a thing that has happened to him. Come closer and progress. While leaving the idea of it as a future something that is as attainable as a future sought after in life. Like ones search for there roots and ones self understanding.

They should position the position of mutant truths becoming public, and experiment with the dominant or fixed point of view outside the nexus or climax being developed through this.

As well as the locus moving from the norm to the periphery itself as in not just emphasis but for the marvel universe itself.

So i read this weird manga many years ago and I've never been able to figure out what it was. I remember a few things, a convenience store robbery with a clerk watching porn, giant wresters with naked women climbing all over them, a character that grabs a censor bar and breaks it revealing an entire 2 pages worth of a close up set of boobs. No idea on title or anything. Any suggestions?

I would read 616 and ultimate. A lot of the charm of what happens in the continuity of the ultimate universe is how things twist in imagining out of the picture you have of what might happen from your knowledge of the original Marvel U. For instance how important of a character Gwen Stacy became in Ultimate Spiderman.

What do y'all think of the direct market system? Everything I've seen recently seems to show it's pretty outdated and doomed to fall apart. Particularly way shops have to gamble with their preorders and the way shops in general get fucked over except by trades but it's the preorders that determine what doesn't get cancelled.

On that note, is it really true that digital sales have a much smaller impact on what series make the cut? That seems ridiculous, is the digital market just too new to be dependable?

Also, do a lot of people here actually go to physical comic shops? I haven't been in one in years but my preference has always been for trades and online for stuff I'm impatient for. I can see how a lot of people have nostalgia for the shops but I don't think they'll exist in their current form for long. I always hear about how much comic shops are struggling and continuing just out of passion for the comics. Digital is just too convenient.

all the comic shops in my area closed up one by one over the years. it's unfortunate. I think in the future comics will eventually work on digital subscription basis. either for access to a publisher's entire library, a portion of it, or to currently running series. maybe a tiered system offering one or more of those setup. we're a ways off and the industry will resist it, but I think that's where we're headed. digital distribution and the death of serial print comics, though I think physical collected volumes will still be made.

I hear the Marvel app offers unlimited access to a huge portion of their older comics, with only newish stuff being pay by the issue.

For OP, I pirate all my comics. Sucks for the industry, but I do pay for merch for some of my favs, so they need to learn to be happy for whatever they get from my broke ass. If I ever get above the poverty line and have some free cash laying about, maybe I'll actually pay for some comics. Until then, piracy is the new opiate of the poor masses. I just need free entertainment to keep me from realizing I'm alive between shifts at work.

'Been reading Gantz G. So far I don't know know how it fits chronologically but it tells the story of some high schoolers who got to play the hunting alien game with Gantz.

I like the tension mostly between the characters because it reminds me of my high school days, except less violent and over the top, but it's there.

Gantz' creator did the story for this one but it's another guy who draws it.

I like it.

Rebooting and forcing a message of diversity are both tough pills to swallow. You put them together, and it's a suppository people won't take unless they really effing need it. Both DC and Marvel are kind of caught up in that jive, don't fix it if it ain't broken.

Fun Fact: (Maybe not a fact but it makes a lot sense). This Diversity thing is not for comic sales, it's for their movies. Marvel doesn't make dick in comic sales compared to movie sales. People are going to be more willing to see an apprentice of a different gender or ethnicity take over the matle than a new actor. I'm not huge into the movies but people would loose their shit if they just re cast Robert Downy Jr like it was nothing. Moneys in the movies, even if the comic sales take a hit it doesn't really matter in the long run to them.

I figure One Piece will be put under the spotlight now that Naruto is officially over. I was curious as to how many people in /616/ keep up with One Piece. Hopefully this thread will reach the limit like the Naruto thread did. If not, then no big deal. One Piece was being brought up in the Naruto general, as well as the party thread.

If you haven't fucked with it before, it's a pretty solid manga. The fights aren't really memorable, but the characters make up for everything. And SOME of the films were surprisingly good, unlike the Naruto films. However, reading One Piece is a terrible chore to do until Water 7 arc. Alabasta and Skypiea arc were ridiculously long and boring. I promise you that you'll be rewarded for your efforts once you reach Water 7.

Supposedly the manga is at a really good part, but I haven't read it since Sabo ate the Mera Mera no Mi. But I promised myself that I was marathon these chapters once the semester is over.

It wasn't that great until the end. I honestly don't remember if he has ever said it before, but Luffy putting aside his own dream is big. Wonder what is Luffy going to do once he discovers they've got Zeff and Sanji's hands hostage. Considering how dumb this manga gets at certain times, it's possible Judge himself or even one of the Vinsmoke kids is going to directly tell him the situation just because.

Need help guys!

I was never a fan of comics, i've only finished Sandman(wich is really fucking awesome) and some indie shit that i dont remember the name, but then the other day i stumbled into this marvelous mother fucker, and i've simply loved it, read all the issues and then "Elves" from the same universe, and i desperately need more.

Gotta admit, it was the first time google has let me down, searched for hours and didn't find something like that.

What im looking for exactly is this level of art (graphics? im not an expert), and the medieval fantasy setting (dwarves, elves, orcs, the whole pack)

I even asked this to two friends of mine who love comics, but to no avail. Help me out bros, please!

PS: not sure if i can make such a request in this board, but since i've seen nothing in the rules, im assuming it's good to go.

Ooh, recommend thread? I'll give it a shot.

Cerebus The Aardvark, by Dave Sim. 300 issues, culminating in the character's death, was the idea he started with, and he gets kudos for completing the mission, even if he completely lost his mind before the end. Started off as a Conan parody, moved into satire and gorgeous artwork, solid paced storytelling, shot off in some weird directions as the author's sanity started to show cracks.

Berserk.

Vinland Saga.

Bone. High fantasy, with protagonists from the wrong genre. Kind of like if Pogo Possum wandered into Lord Of The Rings, or Cheech Wizard was switched with Thomas Covenant.

Poison Elves.

Den (Richard Corben). Big bald naked guy kicking lizardmen with his cock and balls flapping about. Den kicks lizardmen and fucks their bitches, doesn't wear pants, what's not to like?

Hal Foster's original run on Prince Valiant.

Couldn't remember the name so relied on /616/'s knowhow to pick up the slack. Thanks Cornelius.
It's a comic from Hong Kong based loosely on Chinese myth or history or something. Be warned; it's over 100 issues. That put me off reading past the opening arc, but that still left a stronger impression than anything else I could name. Maybe I'll man up and try again someday. That pic is one of the least hype I saved. In just 5 fucking issues. It's insane.

I should mention the Elric comics, they're all usually quite good.
And Requiem: Vampire Knight is more fun than should be legal.

Nigga Hickman was shit.

They've been in a death spiral since literally filing for bankruptcy in the 90s.

Not to mention selling the X-Men to Fox. Not just licensing, but fucking selling their golden goose. And pretending they still had the property so they could pretend to licence it out to the Mutant X TV show, which got their asses sued by both companies.

I feel sorry for the Mutant X production, they had to make an X-Men show without any X-Men characters.

This, Marvel has been shitty with only the occasional good arch or miniseries since the mid 90s. That is also when comics stopped looking like comics and instead became a mess of gradients and poor coloring choices vomited out by photoshop. The art styles also changed from slightly exaggerated and stylized fine arts figure drawing to crosshatched cartoons without bones, thanks to Liefeld, McFarlane and Jim Lee's popularity. I know Kirby and Ditko were wonky at times but after that you had technically excellent guys like John Buscema, Neal Adams, John Byrne and Romita Sr run the show and dictate what to aim for.

Giving Spiderman to Sony was probably even worse. Those movies were successful even before the capeshit craze took off.

I don't think bringing the original characters back will help much if they still keep the shitty writers around and keep the new legacy characters in the books to stink them up.

Looks like Marvel's trying to have their cake and eat it too.
