You know how the major comic book companies of the western world are Boom! Studios, Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, IDW Publishing, Image Comics and Marvel Comics?

Well who are the major players of manga publishing in Japan besides Shueisha with their flagship Jump magazine line?

You can answer this question in terms of sales, number of anime adaptations, brand recognition, general prestige or whatever other forms of criteria you anons can think of.

Kodansha I guess, they've got Fairy Tail, Seven Deadly Sins, Attack on Titty as well as I think every Clamp work among other things.
None of the other labels can really compare to Jump though.

Hello all. Recently I saw a pretty cool looking black and white manga. In the manga there was this female character dressed in some sort of formal military uniform with an XOF patch from MGS on her arm. I'm not sure what it was but she looked badass and I'm trying to locate this manga. Any one know it? Pic unrelated.

I'd say Berserk.

The art is tremendous (and always improving) and the story is epic as all hell.
It's philosophical and uses heavy doses of world building akin to Tolkien. The relationships are complex and it has enough boobs and gore to keep you interested. :)

Plus it's made me cry on more than one occasion. The feels are real.

If you're only slightly interested, you should watch the '97 anime. It was what introduced me. If you think you're very interested, start reading the Manga right away.

Fuan No Tane
Fuan No Tane Plus
Death Note

First 2 are horror, the last is of course mystery and suspense. Fuan No Tane is a series a very short stories(like 4-8) pages they sometimes just...end but I really enjoyed my time with them. Lots creepy stuff in there that isn't over the top and it doesn't rely on gore either. A lot of it is psychological horror, people being messed with, paranoia and some Japanese urban legends influence. It's pretty original.

Worth the read as each story goes by so quickly but take your time or else you'll just binge read all of them and won't have any more.

Ghastly has recovered the scans of his experimental webcomic Apophenia 357, so I thought I'd share.

The idea was that he would draw a silent page inspired by the word salad gibberish that old e-mail spam used to get past filters, using it like Burroughs' Cut -Up technique, and readers would add their own dialogue, interpreting the story any way they wanted.

So, it's kind of like "exploitable: the comic".

There's a bunch

Freddy, Jason and Leatherface all had multiple comics over Avatar & Wildstorm
Clive Barker oversees Hellraiser series for Boom
And you can't forget the years of Aliens and Predator comics from Dark Horse

Your best bet is both the Hack/Slash series and the entire run of Army of Darkness / Ash comics

Hack Slash has crossed over with Chucky, Re Animator, Evil Ernie

Ash has crossed over with Darkman, Dracula, Xena, Obama, Freddy & Jason, Marvel Zombies, Vampirella

For a while, I thought it was like the show LOST and just making it up as it went, but the ending makes it clear that the mystery was planned in advance and all the clues along the way have started fitting perfectly into place. The beginning seemed so ambitious that I was worried the writer had bit off more than he could chew, when really it was just a superbly outlined book, told non-linear at first for maximum mystery, but gets less confusing and more linear as it goes on. If you liked the other 2 books I mentioned in the OP, you'll enjoy this ride as well.

I have friends obsessed with Monster who say it is their favorite anime ever, but they refuse to read manga so they will never know how good 20thCB is.

Oh man, the final chapter just dropped.
I just finished reading it and am crying like a bitch. And since Billy Bat is a comic within a comic, one scene featured characters also reading the final issue of Billy Bat. "Read it slow," a man who finished it already advises his friend. And that was the exact sentiment I went into this issue with, I generally read Billy Bat the way this poster >>42541 reads Berserk "I lingered for about a solid few minutes on each page, taking in all the details" I didn;t stay on pages for full minutes because this book isn;t as art detailed as Berserk, but I spent a good while longer on each page than I could an average manga, just soaking in the horrifying atmosphere of the end of it all. The ending was perfect, I cried like a bitch.

Well all the additional material is in the first 30-45 minutes, and while it re-contextualizes what follows it's not actually mentioned. If you want to see a straight up killing joke adaptation all you have to do is fast forward.

And honestly, I can't tell why it's rated R. I can't say it's anymore violent than Assault on Arkham, and that movie explicitly shows characters having sex, killing joke doesn't.

I didn't see a thread around, so I decided to make one. I found out that the first chapter came out, like, two weeks ago. I kept up with Berserk and Hunter x Hunter, but totally forgot there would be a Boruto manga series.

It adapts from Boruto: Naruto the movie and then continues from that point. Kishi won't be writing the storyline, just supervising it.

I gotta say, I find Ukyo Kodachi's artwork to be better than Kishi. I also feel like the Next Generation content we've gotten ao far has been more entertaining than anything Shippuuden had to offer. What are your thoughts on this?

Compared to Shippuuden's last arc, Boruto the Movie really isn't that bad. You'd have to be exaggerating if you feel that way. And don't get me wrong, I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to how awful the last arc was.

Obviously it's no Hunter x Hunter, but I like Boruto for what it is right now.

I finally watched the Boruto movie. Holy shit, it kicked ass. Everything I want from a Naruto experience. Seeing as the first manga chapter had a flash forward with Boruto's rival threatening to "send Boruto to meet the 7th" (which implies Naruto is dead in the future), I really believed the movie when they fake-killed Naruto and was blubbering like a baby. They fucking tricked me again, just like when they fake killed Kakashi and numerous other people. I need to stop falling for this shit lol. I was pissed that Kakashi never had a speaking role, just a couple background appearances. Kakashi was always my favorite character so I was hoping he would get a moment to shine.
Agreed, it had cooler fights and real emotion behind it. The second half of the film was a non-stop adrenaline rush.

Consider the Preacher AMC a television series 'inspired' by the comics.
The plot's are similar, but so much has changed/been shuffled that they are essentially two different versions of an idea.

The comics have nudity at points (which AMC won't do) and there is some crazy violence/gore, but it seems the AMC show is doing it in its own way. 'Meat Baby' at the end of S01 is much different than the 'idol' that Quincannon worships in the comics. Also Quincannon becomes a character much later in the series. Also the whole 'God appears in church scene' is nowhere in the comics. In fact the church and such are destroyed in the opening pages. The comic literally opens with the last scene in the first season: Jesse, Cass, and Tulip sitting in a diner. Just read the comics. They rule. The show is also pretty cool too.

Shit, I realize I read the question wrong.

Ummm, I thought those new covers were just something AMC was doing leading to the airing of each weeks episode. Different artists were doing a cover based on the show.

So they're gonna change the covers to look more like their characters then inside the whole comic it's the actual story with the real Tulip? The hell?

Also, I really, REALLY fucking tried to like Preacher.. But what the fuck? Why ruin Tulip? Why make all the events totally out of fucking order?
