Does anyone know if chows make chill pets?
I've had dogs my entire life and read em pretty well. Right now I'm wanting something that is chill but a good gaurd dog. Not worried about regular grooming my wife busts nuts over that kinda thing.

Every Chow Chow I've ever met was dumb as a stump and mean. I'm not joking, some of the dumbest dogs ever.

I've owned a chow in the past and I have to say they excel in barking and biting. Chow chows need to be acclimated to new people carefully if at all, they can be very vicious against strangers as you would hope from a guard dog.

It's best to introduce people you expect to see regularly to the dog as a puppy before it becomes full size lion doge. Also, they have purple tongues. PURPLE TONGUES, MAN.

Some of my earliest memories are of a half-chow dog my parents owned. He was a mean motherfucker. It was really sad. My parents actually had him euthanized because of how aggressive he was. I was too young to know how warranted that was. I definitely believed they fucked up somehow rearing him, but the dog was super dangerous so what can you do after the fact? Some of my earliest memories are of being attacked by that dog for so much as entering the room.

I can tell from every other dog they owned and my older siblings' memories that they aren't total retards at raising dogs, nor are they neglectful or abusive. I think that some dogs are just way higher difficulty, and I've always heard chows fit that bill.

A thought occurred to me the other day how many cultures' varying views on the role of dogs have diverse effects on their behavior. In many places, dogs are considered more like other farm animals and not as companions so it seems to make sense that they wouldn't have anywhere near the same propensity to interact with humans. This is even true in the case of hunting hounds, one raised in a sheltered pen or stable will behave radically different than one reared by hand, I imagine that will have an impact on the breed over time based on what traits are selected for . If they weren't reared by hand, sleeping at the hearth and being fed at the table for hundreds of generations of course they'd be less inclined towards cohabiting. That's the vibe I get from Chows and other more ill-tempered breeds
