Heyheyy, welcome to my grow journal.
Pull up a chair and lets find out what we can achieve with the most basic equipment.
The seeds sprouted at 21.12, they had a hard time the first couple of weeks.
I didn't realize that running 24/0 light cycles was seriously stunting the growth.
Saw immediate improvement when the cycle was changed to 18/6.
The more I know.
The first pic is from 29.1
There wasn't much to document before this time.

>The strains
Seedsman - Somango (feminized)
Pyramid - Anesthesia (feminized)

>The gear
-One 120w full spectrum LED panel.
-One 65w blue CFL - Might add a 120w red CFL later on.
-A PC fan mounted to a cardboard box (my last chinese fan died on me during the first days of veg, didnt bother to buy a new one)
-16 litre hempy buckets /w 50/50 coco and hydrorocks
-Advanced Nutrients pH perfect 3 piece combo. ( grow, bloom, micro )

Applied more hooks.

They got a 1,5ml / Litre dosages of feed. Both drank 2 litres with 20-40% runoff.

OP here.
They're a few weeks behind schedule, because of me trying to get off easy.
Didn't optimize the grow area fast enough and they got a bit stunted.
But small size is what I'm going for. Every grow so far has encountered a problem with heat or light stress, so I'm gonna keep the distance at it's max.
Gonna keep on bending and tying them down. Maybe I'll even do some more topping. I want a canopy with at least 15 colas per plant.

Now that they have rooted properly and enjoy a larger spectrum of light, good amount nutrients and proper darkness periods, the growth has exploded.
As you can see from the pics.. That is just a week's worth of growing right there.

I'm gonna take some pics tomorrow / the day after to show how they're adapting to the topping, which I hope went well.
1/10 cases I just simply can't find the exact spot and end up fucking it up.
I didn't do the classic topping. Went straight for FIM just so that I can roll the dice with getting multiple colas, rather than just the two.

The plan so far is to veg till the end of the month or so..
Take a few clones, let heal for a week, then launch flowering.
Estimated flowering time for both is 60 days.

It's the 3rd day after topping. (8.2)
Everything is going pretty well. Gotta adjust the lights a bit further.
There's some minor burn on the leaves. Nothing they can't handle.
The pots are starting to fill in. Anesthesia does crazy well with the bending and lst.
Somango is a bit cranky at times, gotta give her extra love.

Here is the Somango. Filling up nicely as well. Not as fast as the other one tho.
As you can see, she has some holes in her leaves.
Misted them a bit too much and water droplets magnified the light, caused the burn.
I fucked up the fim. Snapped off one of the tiny nodes while cutting.
There's 17 branches on her. I'm gonna cut one or two for clones later on.

Fimming went nicely with her. She's got 18 branches and a lot more coming.
She also smells amazing.

She has grown two pistils in the spot where I topped her.
I expected a significant boost in growth, but I guess she didn't really appreciate the man-handling, with the cloning and all that stuff.

On the plus side, she is alive and well.
Had to fill in some extra coco mix because I saw roots growing to the surface.
Her sativa heritage is really starting to kick in with the smell.
It's like a sweet exotic fruit combined with lemon cleaner.

Hoping she'll go turbo-mode once I set 12/12 and give her a good dose of nutes.

Happy and growing vigorously.
Got high hopes for this one.

The red circle is where I topped her.
This plant is hard to keep down. The branches are very sturdy and will straighten themselves if bent to a 90 degree angle.
I've supercropped each "main" branch at least once. Yet not a single one has formed a knuckle.

She smells more earthy compared to the other.
A mix of fruityness with that classic indica pine smell.

Doing a 24-36 hour darkness period. Then go to 12/12.
Gonna check in when there's hairs.

First day of 12/12.
Replaced the blue cfl with a 125w red one.
Excited to see if the 36 hour dark period had any effect.

Gave each 3 litres of water containing roughly 8ml of bloom, grow and micro

Lift up a Somangos bottom leaf that was touching the coco and saw many roots shooting upwards from where the leaf was resting.
Upon closer inspection I found more tiny white root-tops all around the top layer.
Added more coco to cover them up.

Glad to see she has developed a robust root system.

Also did some bending on each plant.
Trying to maintain an even level on the canopy while giving more light to the lower branches.
Hopefully I'll manage to achieve the bushy size that fills the horizontal space completely.

Another pic from yesterday. Taken right after I bent Somango.
I've been doing another kind of training.
Saw it in a 420magazine journal.

Basically he just peels open the young leaflets and forces the older ones downward.

"Now I force open the tops every day. this keeps node spacing tight."

His grows are pretty sweet, so I trust that he knows what he is doing.

Can't say for sure if this is working for me, but I'm gonna keep doing it until the buds are forming.

Just a side note:
Damn I'm getting annoyed by Somango.
I bent every "main" branch to a 90 degree angle, almost broke skin and yet I find them being erect as fuck when I check the next day.
She can't be helped really. She'll just stretch, and I'll shock her if I keep harassing
Bending all those main branches backfired as the lower, scrub branches took on about 10cm of length, theres like a flimsy +30cm stick with like 4 sets of nodes on it.
Hope the fan can give them a little more strength to become decent yielding and strong enough to stand on their own.

Too bad since both of them have been trained the same way and the indica reacts just the way I wanted.

Anethesia's a cool cat, everything goes smoothly with her.

Just read through grow journals of these plants and found out that I may have to flower Somango for 14-16 weeks. According to this one dude who has run this strain for a few years now. I have reason to believe that I got the most common phenotype that's a sativa hybrid that likes a flower a bit longer than most.
Figured that I should just let Soma have the whole closet after Anesthesia's done.
Approximately at flowering week 9 or 10.

I'll be back later with some pics, the ladies are sleeping atm.

Could you explain LED growlights to me, or at least how to figure out what's enough and what distance I need to keep them from the plants.
op - Sat, 11 Mar 2017 18:38:25 EST ID:YuyPEhuq No.144226 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Heya, thanks for stopping by!
I'll try to explain as well as I can.

Would be bogus to try explain what LEDs are and why you should pick them.
I'll explain why I chose them.
-Cost efficient vs. HPS / other lights
-Low heat vs. HPS / ^
-Decent results vs. HPS / ^

>Whats enough
Depends on a few things
-Size of grow space
-Amount of plants + intented veg times
-A minimum amount of harvest that has to be met

This 120w led panel was enough for the first few runs.
Always ran 1-3 plants and it did alright.
It didn't spike up the electricity bill and it didn't cause so much heat in the closet.
It just doesn't penetrate as well as other sort of lighting, so you gotta be doing all sorts of tricks.
I've seen the fastest growth with this mix of led and cfl. Can recommend it.

>The distance
While the leds are cost efficient and low-heat - they sure do pack a punch.
This 120w panel of mine once burnt my whole crop to a crisp.
The distance was about 30cm, and still it was too intense.
Temps got outta control and the fan caused windburn. RH was too low.
Didn't realize what it was at the time.
Nowadays I always check the distance with my hand.
Too hot for my hand - too hot the plant.
Also I keep close watch on the canopy. Any slight sign of tips burning - I move the lights further, then I'll ease back into it.
I decrease the distance as the plant grows in size. As it matures it can withstand more intense light, given the desirable environment.
Just gotta keep the conditions optimal for the plant so it can focus on growing and not trying to cling on to dear life.

Thanks, those are answers I can work with. Just one thing, when the growlight has 60x3w LEDs in full-spectrum but says it has a 120w output...What the hell do I refer it as? I know it works from a previous run but that's it.

I'm currently using it in a 1-plant grow tent with reflective insides (any personal experiences with how that improves things, anyone?), and the temperature seems to be the same throughout the entire tent except for up close to the lights. Warm but not quite tropical, comfortable enough for my hand.

No problemo.
Refer.. As in what to call it?
It would still be a 180 watter to me but I'm no expert when it comes to lights.
Many leds draw less electricity than the combined wattage of the leds themselves.

And yea, the reflective mylar used in tents is sweet.
Not sure how much it improves things in the long run, but it's better to have it than not.
Sounds like you got a good thing going.
How much did you harvest in the previous run with that equipment?

Oh, this is my first run using the Gorilla tent and 45-litre air-pot set-up, my last grow I tried with the LED was in a small IKEA closet and a hopeless attempt at saving a stretched out outdoors failure.

Ah, the infamous scrub-grow. Done a few of those myself.

With a pot that size you'll want to take advantage and do a long veg period.

I overdid it a little, but a two month veg time sounds legit in your case.

Maybe do some reading on other peoples grows.
Sometimes you get lucky and find a journal with almost identical setup.

What strain are you running?

Couldn't be helped.
Went too far with the veg and she went crazy as soon as I flipped 12/12.
No amount of bondage and bending could keep her from doing her thing.

She seems to do well with aggressive training, so I'll keep on bending.

30 cm isnt that much
You should have removed all the useless stick growth in veg and kept something like 4 tops
Then the plant can focus swelling them in flower instead of pumping water to all the other bud sites that wont yield anything.

Oh, the good old lollipopping method. Gave it a thought.
In my case it wasn't the best option.
Not a good idea to invest all the effort into few huge colas while having bad ventilation.
Couldn't forgive myself I let the colas go moldy by accident.

My logic here is:
Veg for long. Utilize every branch. Cut nothing unless necessary.

I'll smoke the popcorn or make butter, so no worries there.

I knew they might get outta control because they're unfamiliar strains.
Other is full on indica while the other is sativa dominant.
Plus, Somangos getting the most light, so no wonder why she's dominating.

Well, you are aware of the issues, and have your strategy, and it makes sense. How bad is the ventilation? Even a small fan is enough to stop mold unless you live in a dank basement or some shit.

Got a PC-fan wired to a 5v usb-cable, could upgrade to a 12v if I find the right one.
It would spin a lot faster and of course be more effective.
Although the problems do not go away with just that.

Moisture starts to collect and becomes a problem when the lights go off.
I keep the closet sealed with a blanket sheet stuck between the cracks of the closet doors.

There's no holes for ventilation, so the air goes damp and stale very fast.
Water can be found collected between leaves that are resting upon each other.

I am aware that having many tops doesn't exclude mold problems.
But decreases the chances of the biggest colas going rotten as they got less bulk.
Charles Clayfuck - Fri, 17 Mar 2017 15:33:55 EST ID:lE51QiPd No.144274 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Hold on, does the fan also go off at night?

It sounds like water is building up from transpiration. Which is needed for a plant to survive. I'm just wondering why the lights being off seems to be the trigger for moisture build up.

Another thought would be to put something like a Damp-Rid bucket in the closet. That might help.

Yea the fan goes off at night.
Let it run through the dark periods during my last grow and it made things worse.

I've read that the plant feeds during the night.
Makes sense that It sweats out a lot water while taking up the nutes.

Just yesterday gave both plants 4½ litres of water each.
Now the humidity was so high up, that I found some water droplets on the closet door when I opened it for the first time today.
This will decrease as the buckets go more dry.

I'm baffled. Your room must be seriously humid, if keeping a fan on at night makes things worse. All I could recommend would be a small dehumidifier in the room. Nice way to get ph neutral water for he plants, too.
op - Sun, 19 Mar 2017 05:05:14 EST ID:1RBSObRI No.144287 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Yeah it's surprisingly high.
At least we know there's a lot going on during the night.
Thankfully the blanket sucks up the most of the humidity.

During a previous run the fan was on and it lowered temps.
This caused bad wind burns and might've even triggered a lock-out.
Other problems were present as well, but this managed to cause a snowball.

Safe to say that I'm not rolling the dice with these two.
I'll try to water them separately to see if that helps.

Too bad the closet is so filled up that there's no room for a dehumidifier.
Unless its the size of a pringles can.

Well fuck me and call me freddy.

Found some bananas on the lower branches on Somango.

Cut them off and examining for more.
There were 4 branches in total that had the male parts growing.

Few of the sacks/bananas had already ripened to the point of them being open.
Can't really say how this managed to happen as I check the lower parts every goddamn day.

Guess I gotta put on more dark hours and hope that the plant ripens fast.

Neither of the plants are ready to be harvested so this is my last-ditch effort to get some quality bud.

Not sure if Anesthesia has been affected by this. Time will tell.

Such a shame really.

If something is to blame, it's the temps and nuteburn.

Gonna increase the darkness, trim the bottom popcorn and flush the buckets.

We'll see how this plays out.

Had a change of heart.
Culled the Somango. Found way more bananas on the lower branches.

Plus she might have pollinated (if not already) the other plant if she wasn't removed.

I'll keep updating on Anesthesia.

She should finish by the end of the month.

Man that sucks, the Somango was looking good. I would say the genetics were to blame. It's what happens when growing from seed. Your Ladyboy just thought she was so awesome that she REALLY needed to pass on her genes. If I understand things correctly, the seeds she produced would have been pretty much all female.

INTERPOL !3mB4iDBpWw - Mon, 03 Apr 2017 20:39:18 EST ID:Z5JAvHDD No.144417 Report Quick Reply

Soma's strains go for up to 25$ a seed, I would've never chopped one just because it was hermaphroditic. Worst case scenario you have some feminized seed from it and you just keep growing it out and pairing it off with its 1st and 2nd cousins until you've stabilized the strain. Genetics are a crap shoot, yes, but you're still working with the 100% of DNA from the original plant, you just have to keep working with it until it's stable or at least workable. What you're fighting with are the original breeders working desired traits into the strain using the recessive genes instead of the dominant ones, so if you go to breed it with something else it's a huge undertaking to try and keep those traits. They're written over with a single generation to the point of losing them entirely just because someone who really knows what they're doing doesn't want their work being copied. It's not impossible but you have to have patience and a keen eye.

You have to remember also that Soma only grows in soil and he only fertilizes with Guano teas. If you start using high octane hydroponic nutes on his stuff, it could throw it for a loop easily.

>only grows in soil and he only fertilizes with Guano teas

maybe he babies his plants because they're unstable and he's ending out untested, overpriced gear that doesn't perform in the real world. i've heard about people getting males out of soma feminized seed and feminized packs that were all hermies and packs that plain didn't pop.

You said it champ. Totally bummer to chop at this point.
The bud is mostly just hair.
I wouldn't shit on the strain nor the breeder.
This was pretty much my fault for not paying enough attention.
Gave the seeding a thought, but didn't want to sacrifice everything for a fuckton of seeds.
They might've even turned out totally rad with two different types of feminised strains crossed with each other.
But I'd rather let Anesthesia fatten up all by herself and get some quality dank out of her.

But yea, Somango is totally a keeper. Wouldn't really blame the breeder for this.
I fucked up big time and the last half of flowering is usually the part where the plant gets damaged easily.

I'd figure if someone who has the tents and proper gear could rock a really decent harvest with this strain.
I mean, it exploded on me - so what'll it do in optimal conditions?

With ones that don't pop you have to consider shelf life also. If Soma had a huge run in 2013 for instance where he supplied all the storefronts that carry his line, the more unscrupulous ones are probably still trying to sell all of his old stuff before they order more. Also if you buy from the same shady storefront and they ship you a packet of duds, they're probably assuming you have nobody to complain to.

You know what sugar is, right?
Just stored plant energy. Sucrose, table sugar, literally works to store energy in plants. Like fat does in animals.

Do this trick -

Cut off two branches from a plant. Put one in plain water, and the other 3 tablespoons of sugar per litre.

See which branch does better over time. Just top off with tap water and see what happens.

I'm pretty sure that ordinary white table sugar is deprived of anything that's useful.
That's the reason it's not considered a healthy thing to consume regularly.

Sticking with the all natural option and going with locally produced honey.

Also, the point of adding molasses or honey is to feed the microbial system within the buckets.
Which in turn, help the plant to use unavailable nutrients that still are present.

Sugars, by themselves, won't be doing jack shit to these microbes.

Also gotta add that honey might not even work in the same way as molasses.
Both have their own unique set of perks.

>I'm pretty sure that ordinary white table sugar is deprived of anything that's useful.

Like I said, it is junk food to plants. Pure energy. No vitamins, etc. Molasses is just the leftover from processing sugar anyway.

Yeah I get that it's" junk" - but it's certainly not food.
Roots can't process it and it does no favors for the plant.

Molasses and honey are natural products that have minerals and other good stuff in them like potassium and antibacterials.

We gotta understand that plants make their own sugars and they do not crave for that diabeetus-shit.

Only reason I'd force sugarwater thru my culled plant, is to trick my way to some extra weight.
And I'm sure as hell not doing that shady shit.

Pretty sure the plants treat sucrose as sucrose and have little opinion on the matter.

Molasses is around 20% sucrose, so the shit is going in no matter what...

Damn, I can't catch a break.

Found some tiny mold spots on a few nugs.
Glad I noticed when I did, cause that could've spread pretty fast.

Culled the whole thing to minimize the loss.
I know I could've just snip out the moldy parts and let her go on.
But didn't really seem worthwhile at this point.

So I guess this concludes the journal.

Things really didn't end up going as well as I hoped.
But, that's what I get for having a shitty setup and trying to get a huge yield.

I hope that this journal can help someone who's new to growing.
But I don't recommend this aggressive training unless it's an experiment.

I can recommend people to try supercropping as an height management tool.
It certainly worked well with Somango.

Wouldn't recommend it on tiny Indicas tho.
Wasn't Anesthesias cup of tea.

I might do another journal in the near future when I've got a tent and stuff.

Got some nice beans, waiting to be popped.
Purple Trainwreck, Bubble Bomb, The Church.. That kinda stuff.

Gonna do a smoke report after drying.
Not gonna do a long cure. There's just not that much of it to be worth it.

I can answer any questions if someone has any!

Heres a blurry pic of the mold I found.
There was like four buds that were affected so I got off easy.

And the danks themselves.
I got about 40-50 grams dry.
Been blazing since the chopping so there's no way to tell surely.

The smoke is pretty awesome. Definitely full-on indica.
It hits pretty hard and wake n' bakes are getting on a narcotic-high kind of level.
But in the end it just gets you kinda sleepy and really hungry.

The buds smell pretty funky. It's kinda like a mix of pine forest and chloride.
Dunno what is up with that.
But when you grind some, you get that fruity skunk smell.
It's pretty unique I must say.

For a bit early chop this smoke is really pleasing.
The buds have a thick coating of trichs and are pretty hard on the surface.

But as far as indica strains go - I bet this is nothing new or special.
