So, this is my first time growing shrooms using BRF tek method. Anyway, I birthed my cakes yesterday and noticed that one of the cakes had black charcoal-colored mold near the top. Like an idiot, I dunked it anyway and today I cut away all the black stuff. Didn’t realize black mold can be so disastrous. I had the cakes sitting in the fruiting chamber for the better part of the day until my friend convinced me to toss it.

So, question is how bad did I fuck up? I’m worried I may have contimainated not just my grow area, but my entire room. Anyone have similar experiences? What should I expect?

Pic is a photo from this morning after I cut away all the mold.

yeah you fucked up pretty bad, but dont beat yourself up about it. rome wasnt built/burned in one day.
you are using the pf tek with a shotgun fruiting chamber? if so religiously stick to fanning and for now air your whole appartment and maybe dust and wipe some surfaces with some lysol. if you havent rolled the remaining cakes you could theoretically wait a day or two before applying the verm layer.

for future reference:
afaik any mold but cobweb poses a higher risk that a single cake could possibly be worth. if you notice it after birthing the cake, put that shit in a plastic bag and seal it asap.

refer to a general room mol prevention guide. frequent airing, leaving a gap between furtniture and the wall, regularly moving furniture yaddda yadda bla bla bla. but tbh i highly doubt that a species that grows on a PF cake is going to instantly affect your wallpaper. and IIRC there has not been a documented case of a hobby grower getting proper pulmonary problems from mold contamination (at least not on the most common forums)

its possible to grow healthy mushrooms in a non sterile environment, which is obviously what they've always done. The problem with heat sterilization is that the substrate loses most or all beneficial, symbiotic organisms which the mushroom mycellium naturally coexists with, and actually protects it from other, airborne, pathogenic strains of mold.

symbiotic or beneficial microorganisms are not very important for cubensis especially with the pf tek. they play a crucial role in the cultivation of ps. cyan and ps azur, but with pf tek you actually need to make the substrate dead as goodest as possible before introduing cubensis spores or tissue
