The actual relative size of the Tsar Bomba's explosion makes one think maybe the whole "enough nukes to destroy the planet 3 times" thing is kind of overblown.

I recently chilled with a buddy of mine that's a survivalist and he really liked the coat I had (pic related, tried to get the best shot I could of the pockets). It has a waterproof zipper on the front and some hidden pockets on the inside. Anyways, he mentioned maybe putting some velcro on those inside pockets to make them more secure for running and it got my mind moving. Any other ideas on making this jacket better in case society falls apart? I'm personally kicking around trying to incorporate a hood I can attach with a zipper or something for harsher weather. Also, I guess general tactical/apocalypse fashion thread.

these are the best pants I've ever had - not quick dry, but the most rugged and utilitarian by far. I've got 2 pairs and then a pair of the shorts too.

I just got back from backpacking the Continental Divide Trail, the Long Trail and the Benton Mackaye Trail (3400 miles this summer) and carried this fleece as my primary layer the whole time - the thing still looks new. It's super durable and warm for what it is. It's my favorite layer

In The Dark Tower, they were playing Hey Jude ragtime. You just don't DO that.

I guess it'd be all what you call in America "jug band", in the UK "skittles", in Australia "bush band". You know, jugs, washboards, tea chest, lagerphone. Repurposed stuff because real musical instruments require specialised craftspeople. A few really worn out pianos, violins, guitars. Maybe recorded music and the occasional synthesiser where someone has power, but a pretty random selection of music and worn all to hell. Even instrument repairs can be tricky, like piano tuning, and unless you're an audio tech nerd like Uncle Ghastly, forget repairing the electric ones.

It would be awful. I can see a lot of top forty crap getting murdered, a lot of classics played with the wrong instruments, from memory, without sheet music. You know, Hey Jude played ragtime. That kind of thing.

I can see a lot of religious music being preserved and being performed, that kind of shit is harder to kill than cockroaches. Long after Lady Gaga, The Beatles, and Mozart are forgotten, Closer My Lord To Thee will still be sucking your will to live.

What would life realistically be like following a nuclear war?

Would human survival be possible on any scale?

Are there any movies or video games which depict a post-nuclear war world realistically?

I think it would be like When The Wind Blows. Those who did not die in the initial bombing wouldn't last more than a week before they succumbed to radiation poisoning or starvation.

And your idea about having an underground bunker or turning an air craft carrier into a life raft? Forget it. Neither of those plans are actually feasible for a long period of time. Multi-generational vaults and survivor camps are nothing but movie make believe. Global Nuclear war would be the end of the human race. Dying in the initial blast would be the best thing you could do.

I don't think life itself would end. Plants, insects, burrowing mammals and lizards. These things might take a hit but a few would survive and in 5-10 thousand years in would be as though humanity never existed at all.

Let me say I've only skimmed this thread so forgive me if I touch on topics already covered.

A realistic post nuclear war:
It first depends on the scale of the war. Even though initially only strategic areas would be targeted, shortly after the first volley people in charge of the worlds various nuclear arsenals would probably let them all/most fly.

Nuclear fallout would be wide spread across the land. Nuclear winter would be the result in most if not all places. Nearly all plant life and most animal life not cared for by humans would die.

The air would be toxic to various degrees depending on how fallout propagates and how close you are to impact sites. The water and soil would also be affected similarly.
All electronics any where near a blast site would be entirely destroyed by EMP.
Almost all if not all agriculture would stop.

Humans are tough litter buggers though, we will almost certainly survive in small numbers. All humans not in fallout shelters or similar protective structures would be instantly killed if they were near a blast site. Those out side the immediate zone of the blast would die a slow lingering death.
Those even further would die even slower deaths over a period of years.

Those even further may survive if they manage to find enough food and water to survive.
Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Cliff notes versions

>Any one near a blast dies
>Every one else suffers
>It gets worse, much much worse before it gets better.
>Slowly we either adapt or die
> we rebuild a new world on the ashes of the old.

>We don't survive, humans go extinct
>Millions of years pass and new life takes our place.

A note I forgot to mention in my previous post is that life that already exists would adapt and flourish in the post nuclear world. The main one would be mushrooms. They would blanket the land with their glowing caps.

many civilizations have fallen into anarchy before, completely falling and allowing new civilizations to be born out of them.

The Olmecs fell to birth the Miztecs and Aztecs but not for a few hundred years.

The Western Roman empire fell and Europe descended into darkness for hundreds of years

When the Indus Valley Civilization fell only farmers were left who formed the Tamil Civilization and created the Indian Civilization.

When western civilization falls, it may be grander and harder to recover but undoubtedly we will.. or will we?

(i'm genuinely curious to know what makes us different)

Most of them are underwater, that survive to any extent. The rest were destroyed by the rapid melting of glaciers. Ahh, unless you mean the time before that. That was what caused the ice age eventually though, but crystalline methane sulfate was easy to get with the water so low, so some had a good fuel source til the rebound.
