Fighting/Bartering/Negotiating/Rebuilding when SHTF by Rebecca Faggleway - Mon, 07 May 2012 04:16:15 EST ID:t8hvXDKw No.8182 Ignore Report Quick Reply

If SHTF, and you manage to live through the shitstorm how do you think you will fare in the post-apocalyptic world? What skills do you have that you think would help you survive? Are you very charismatic, able to group people together and start a new community? Do you think you can live on your own and be a survivalist? Does your career give you any special skills that could help you? What are some things you lack that you think you should work on?

As for myself, I am trained fairly well in CQC, and could defend myself competently, or take from others if I needed to. I have a background in Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and Krav Maga. I'm a decent free runner, not due to lots of practice, just cause I'm not scared of heights or falling. I'm also fairly fit, and run a lot so that's a bonus. I'm good with computers, and taking apart and re-purposing gadgets and such, so if I have power I could make all sorts of little contraptions to trade or use for my own purposes. I'm also pretty good at manipulation, and use that to my advantage if I needed to trick individuals or small groups of people out of their things. I'm also good at fishing, and could have a decent supply of food from the nearby lakes and bayous.
I'm pretty lacking in a lot of departments, however. I don't yet have a gun or a BOB, and I don't know a lot about local flora and fauna. I'm also not a very good hunter as I've only been hunting once. I'm sure I could get the hang of it, but as of right now I suck ducks. I'm pretty lightweight(think Mordecai from borderlands with a bit more bulk), so I'd HAVE to have a weapon to engage larger foes. I am also a heavy sleeper so the lack of awareness when I'm out could be really bad for me. I can't think of anything else right now, but I'll post more of this thread does any good!

I've been in boyscouts for 12 years, so that aids my outdoor/survival skillset somewhat. I've inadvertently gone through leadership and teaching courses because of scouting. But added to that i'm also a blacksmith, or bladesmith really. I've been making knives, axes, and other tools out of steel for the past 5 years. So that gives me a bit of an edge as far as general usefulness to local societies. I can reforge leaf springs, files, chisels into weapons and tools even with a makeshift forge.

I am, however, not very good at any sort of combat. while i am decently strong, i usually try to avoid any sort of confrontation, so i have no real experience in fighting.

pic somewhat related. one of my knives from a year or so ago

I'm in medical school right now. Assuming I can get a few years of experience in before the world implodes upon itself I'll be worth my weight in platinum, which is good because I'm worth dog shit in a fight. I'm not bad with a gun on paper targets but that doesn't mean much in a firefight. I do have some survival skills, but the longest I've ever gone camping is two weeks and I was a complete mess afterwards.

check out some of the internet knifemaking forums like britishblades.com or jerzee devil

or read wayne goddard's the $50 knife shop. a very good book to have on hand, especially in a scavenging sort of situation.

I'm 19, 6 foot 2 abouts with a solid build. I played Rugby Union for 11 years throughout my teens so I can run for extended periods of time in rough (physically hurt, rain n shit) conditions, not too well over cross country though. However i havent played for a year and smoked a lot of weed and lost a lot of muscle mass but i still run/bicycle/skate/hike occasionally.

Ive been involved in leadership programs. I learned to sail through one of them. I keep a cool head in bad situations involving people or personal problems. Ive been shooting guns since a young age on a bush property and have a moderately good shot. I have basic survival skills like shelter making, foraging, trap making, water gathering. I'm not charismatic, more charming in a polite way or so ive been told. I find i can talk to complete strangers and get them comfortable with me.

If SHTF Ive always thought i would end up leading a small group of survivors to safety then leaving them to wander alone among the wasteland. With my dog.

I'm small and female, so that's either going to be a big advantage due to the "protect your women" idea, or a big disadvantage due to the "rape, pillage, and plunder" idea.

Being a nurse would be a big advantage because medical help is going to be severely lacking, especially in a nuclear ( medication tainted by radiation) or zombie (hospitals will all be overrun due to a lot of people dying in them).

I'm really quiet and stealthy when I need to be, so I could probably sneak around somewhere relatively easily.

Definitely need to work on being less compassionate. I would be the first one to fall for the old "poor woman with a broken leg dropped her shopping cart" trick.

I'm a survival dude, I like to camp out with nothing but my knife and a pair of clothes. Making shelters and furniture out of anything.

I like wilderness. In a post-apocalyptic world I'll be a hermit who savagely beats roasts and devours victims.

There was a guy that one of my friends knew that ran a small dojo out of old storage units that he rented. Was a really quiet middle-aged guy, but he knew his shit. I went there about once a week for a year, and since it was small I got to learn a lot all at once. Stick fighting, knife fighting, improvised weapons, life or death unarmed combat, and a bunch of shit like that. I'd still probably end of getting fucked if the guy I was against knew how to use a knife properly, but I think I wold end up okay against any regular guy with a weapon.

I'm 18 125 pounds. I spent years 8-17 in boy scouts and achieved eagle scout. so I have decent survival knowledge. I can fish and rig traps to hunt. I'm a natural leader and can organize a weak survival party into a vicious raiding party, or a stalwart survival group. Probadly my best quality for this situation is my split second reaction time and decision making, along with my resourcefulness.

Also, to take into what you already know in Krav, the knife isn't going to be stabbed at just any old place, it'l be slashed though, so take the knife from them while they're slashing(especially from the out->inward's movement) if you can, especially if they're flailing.

Wow, I just realized how bad I am at explaining this shit.

I know what you mean it's okay. One specific thin he taught me that I remember is when you have a knife, and the other guy has a knife there are 3 distances where in each distance certain parts of the body are always open for slashing or stabbing.
First distance is when you are both far apart. When he slashes or stabs at you it is super easy to deflect/dodge it, slash the wrist, and move back out of engagement if he is still coming.
Second is when his arm with the knife is just barely close enough to grab. Once you control his arm you can slash/stab any part you want and quickly move away from him.
Third distance is when he is in your face, and you never want to be here because the chance of death is pretty much 50/50. At this point the only thing to do is try to control his arm and get back to distance 3 where you have the upper hand. I think my Jiu-Jitsu will especially help me in a situation where I'm in distance 3 and about to get fucked.

I live in The CI so if the shit hits the fan and sat 2/3 of the population die out the only problem will be getting food, and since there's a lot of old people and children here i don't think there'll be any raiders or anything.
I'm skinny-fat, always hungry, not useful in a fight if the guy is trained but i could help a little if he was unarmed and i was just supposed to stall him and i have no usefull skills beside i like building shelters.

>when you have a knife, and the other guy has a knife

That'll never happen. If someone pulls a knife on you it's to assassinate your shit to avoid a fight. So if you survive the initial stabs to your body, then you can pull out your own knife and maybe defend yourself while you're bleeding out of the holes in your body.

>First distance is when you are both far apart. When he slashes or stabs at you it is super easy to deflect/dodge it, slash the wrist, and move back out of engagement if he is still coming.

Super easy huh? Yeah, I bet you'll be totally calm enough to slice his arm as he's lunging at you with a body stab. This scenario is pure fantasy.

>Second is when his arm with the knife is just barely close enough to grab. Once you control his arm you can slash/stab any part you want and quickly move away from him.

Yeah, you're going to grab his stabbing arm with your "weak" hand and hold it there while he's kicking you and clawing your face with his other hand. I'm sure after you start "controlling" him you'll be able to stab him a couple times.

>Third distance is when he is in your face, and you never want to be here because the chance of death is pretty much 50/50. At this point the only thing to do is try to control his arm and get back to distance 3 where you have the upper hand. Yeah, definitely. It's a fantastic idea to try and wrestle someone who has a knife and is trying to kill you.

Dude, you can play out these fantasies in your head all you want. If you ever tried this shit in real life, you would be dead hands down.

I wasn't trying to act like a badass or anything, we were just talking about the possibilities in a knife fight. If you knew anything about knife fighting you'd already know the first rule is to not do it.

>Yeah, definitely. It's a fantastic idea to try and wrestle someone who has a knife and is trying to kill you.

I wasn't talking about wrestling, I was talking about controlling the limbs and moving the fuck away. Maybe you should go to a different board where autism is welcome. Go to /b/ or something.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYGUoZyJs18

Actually wrestling would be pretty standard in a knife fight. The point is to control the arm he's trying to kill you with.

Obviously you should avoid any kind of fight at all costs especially one where a single poke or slash in the wrong place will kill you.

Also you don't exactly have the same access to medical supplies in the apocalypse. You would die of infection from a cut that would normally be harmless.

He would have to use his other arm to stop you from taking him off balance.

Obviously there's always a really good chance you'll get cut up in a knife fight but nothing you're trying to say is illogical isn't even that farfetched.

Yup, yup. Charisma, plus a wide hearing range(in comparison to people I know) coupled with over-alertness. Also, I have many tidbits of useful information widespread in many subjects as well, and I'm not too bad with a weapon in my hands. As for things I lack... probably a lot of information on what is edible in the wild.

I'm about to be shipping out for basic training. Army infantry, so I'll be trained very well. I have guns and know how to use them. I have experience with raising crops and dealing with pests. I'm already physically fit. I weight train and run. I'm very charismatic and a natural born leader. I have friends who are combat vets, both infantry and medics so my crew will be pretty well off.
