I require music in Chinese. MANDARIN please for the love of God. I find most Canto music is better, but Canto is not what I'm learning :/ Preferably not pop music, its all I ever seem to be able to find.

Is there anything more new-wavey, like Neon Indian, or alternative? Lo-fi beach pop like The Raveonettes or Best Coast, rap, whatever, just.. nothing that's going to remind me of N*SYNC plz.

Is this kind of like asking for good movies from China? Not happening?

Yep. You're applying early 21st century American popular music norms to Chinese culture, which has yet to develop similar genres (if it ever does).

Lol your taste in music is so bad OP.

Anyway for everyone learning a language from a very different culture, don't limit yourself to what you already know. Try a bunch of different things, okay you're never going to like frilly pop if you prefer guitar pop but you might like some traditional music, of which there is a huge variety (unlike pop).

I lol'd.

idk OP, I'd help but I only have Arabic and Serbo-Croat music.

Bad Daughter makes good lo-fi indie stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vWjDG9s2T0

This song from 龙宽九段 is one of my favorite Chinese songs evar. I gues it's electropop or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcNyDbGp1ic

Kindergarten Killer is an awesome underground rapper with dope beats and a ton of albums and mixtapes. It's not for everyone; he uses software to shift up the pitch of his voice, seemingly to make himself sound like a little kid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DjRIXUwAhk it took a few months of going back and listening to his stuff online before I finally embraced it. If you really can't hang with the voice, he's also got some albums under his regular MC name, FK Moses, without the pitch changes.

Tied with Kindergarten Killer for my favorite Chinese MC is a gal named Dai Baojing. If someone had told me before discovering her that a Chinese model for hip hop and skater brand clothing labels was also a part-time rapper I would've laughed it off. Turns out homegirl's got one of the sickest flows on any continent and some of her lyrics are pretty fucking clever too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTQpB6FzwvQ

How about Cui Jian, father of Chinese Rock and Roll. Closest thing there is to Chinese classic rock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaJFyRWDG5Y The heavy use of sax threw me off for a while, but dude makes legit rock and roll.

Honeygun (糖果枪, not to be confused with the Florida band with the same English name) makes some good power-pop rock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4wxPiy2z3I

The Flowers were a pretty popular band with a heavy Western pop rock influence. Their videos are pretty damn entertaining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFYdhlGR_6Y

Sa Dingding has been compared to Bjork. I don't listen to enough Bjork to know how accurate that is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWrZUWjgFxM

Omnipotent Youth Society is a Chinese band that's really popular with Westerners. I think it's some sort of folk rock. No link because I haven't checked them out yet. I've actually got a huge backlog of Chinese music to still get to. Just yesterday I dropped 400 RMB on new music at my local indie shop here in Beijing. There's a lot of underground tunes here, and even if you're fluent enough to browse Chinese websites, a lot of it is just really difficult to track down.

there was a glam rock band i really liked in high school called Silver Ash

any reason you don't like pop music? Wen Lee Coco and Faye Wong are really cozy pop singers of the 90s-00's . maybe today too but i haven't listened to chinese music in a long time :(

I saw someone posted ChaCha earlier (well, in 2013), you guys shoud check out the work she does with dutch producer Jay Soul. As a duo they are called AM444 and make brilliant music. I don;t know what genre to call them, they are kind of funky electronic and sometimes sound wonderfully weird and beautiful. I'll post some of my favs.

Lyrics are from some Daoist text. Try to ignore the anime crap the uploader added.

As an aside, Christopher Tin is pretty great for polyglots in general.
