This maybe be a stupid question but how difference does a good guitar actually make? \For example I own a piece of shit classical guitar that cost about £50. It's been battered and bruised, the fretboard is worn out, the saddle has come off and I replaced it with a piece of cardboard and it's generally not that quality an instrument.

The thing is it still sounds pretty nice and I reckon if I was better at guitar I could make it sound really nice. I just have a hard time imagining that a better guitar would sound that much better certainly not 40 times better at any rate.

If you're talking about electric guitars, the pickups are all that matters; you can buy a piece of shit Squier and stick some nice pickups in it and it will sound great. But with acoustic guitars, the construction of the body does have an effect on the sound. But what sounds good and what sounds shitty can be pretty subjective. Unless you've become like a really good player, you shouldn't feel limited by the value of the instrument you're using.

Honestly, the only reason professional musicians buy expensive guitars instead of shitty starter ones isn't because of the sound, but because they are more durable and reliable and having your guitar fuck up because of shoddy wiring and cheap materials in the middle of a show is a nightmare.

I'd say most big time pro's buy expensive shit either because it is free and they are endorsed or because they get what they need. Either way, I don't think any working musician besides those dive bar types play without a backup. I sure as fuck never would. Even still, the guitar aspect isn't where you really have to worry. The only 2 things I'm considered about when playing is breaking strings or fucked up cables. From there, an amp shitting out would be about the only concern. I've never seen and rarely heard of a guitar internals failing instantly. It is usually a slow process with signs before complete failure. Acoustics rarely ever just fall to pieces unless they get melted glue from sitting in a 140 degree car.

Shitty cables and broken strings are the absolute worst thing ever. Only blown out of the water of importance by a shitty player.

>Gear isn't the issue. It is your skill.

I've got 2 clones of my guitar, snare, hats and ride. Soon I plan to have 2 cloned drum pedals. I need a backup amp though. If mine shat out during a show, I'd be fucked if the venue didn't have one and I couldn't plug into their mixer or soundboard or whatever they are using. This doesn't have to be as costly as it seems either. I can go to a pawnshop and get 2 Jackson clones for 180 bucks each all day and they will be solid after setting them up properly and checking all the internals.

>I again repeat, Gear isn't the issue. It is your skill. Yngwie can shred the fuck out of a Squire and Kollias can melt a Ddrum kit. Both will sound amazing on shit gear. They will sound better on awesome gear but gear has little to do with what you can and can't play.

>PRACTICE MORE! There are no shortcuts. Put the fucking time in if you want to be good. Dedication and discipline separate the men from the boys.

As far as electric I've really only ever played cheapo Chinese ones. Never had major problems, the only real difference is that one that cost $500 vs. $100 would be the intonation across the entire fretboard. With most guitars I don't really hear or feel the difference between a $800 and $4000 guitar. The $4000 one usually just looks prettier with albalony inlay decorations, is a 60 y/o vintage, or had a famous previous owner.
Several hundred would be my limit for a guitar, since I don't see the advantage of more expensive ones.

electric v. acoustic is a big deal in this case

for an electric, the amp and the pickups are the most important. the bridge too. you can buy a shit guitar and swap out the hardware and it will very nice with an electric. also, most electric guitar pricing is based on total bullshit. like, american vs. mexican strats have a huge price difference, but are the same thing, not to mention they are probably still being made by mexicans in a factory when they're made in the us. electric guitar has a lot of brand name marketing disinfo surrounding it, if you have a tube amp and your guitar wasn't manufactured by chinese slave labor it's probably fine

with an acoustic , the difference between a cookie cutter yamaha starter guitar and a handcrafted classical guitar made by a real luthier is a huge difference. my friend has a really nice classical guitar and the clearness and resonance of the notes is incredible, mine sounds dull in comparison

tl;dr: try before you buy. do blind tests if you can

Lineup is stacked as fuck, Washed Out was on it too but apparently he dropped. Sucks, I'll still be there tho, too good to pass up.

This has been a sweet year for Texas festivals, went to the also awesomely stacked lineup at Sound on Sound earlier this month too.
