So it's been long enough that it's had time to digest.

What's your opinion on Pink Season? Was it just a cheap laugh to be forgotten in another month, or was it really a lasting statement of musical hilarity?

White is Right, Gays 4 Donald, and Please STop Calling me Gay were my favorite tracks. I lol'd about half way through when I realized how many songs were about pussy.

BUT I just went back to listen to White is Right and I noticed Google Music took it off.... And I don't have iTunes but I checked it out of curiosity and it's not there either. What the fuck?? Why do I pay money to services if they're going to tack back songs and censor artists? I thought Google was better than that at least...

As a composer how can you not feel terrible knowing that even if you make your amazing and elaborate magnum opus many people aren't going to feel anything when listening to it? I mean there are simply mind-blowing songs out there, and many of these mindblowingly good songs are not understood, too niche, or too experimental for most people.

What I mean is that, what is the point if even when you spend decades learning music theory and sound engineering most people are going to listen to your songs and go "meh"?

Your music should be enjoyable, first and foremost. If it does, chances are, someone else will enjoy it. Shit has to be enjoyable, it's not all about theory 24/7. Theory is derived from studying why we like music in the first place, not the other way around.

There really is no point is there?
Chances are you create because you have to. Think if you went a month without doing anything musically. You would go mad wouldn't you? There is a personal aspect to music and a public aspect. You are wrapped up in one of the most mysterious traditions of human existence. Think of the first person to beat a drum before music was a word( before language existed?). Did they worry about being heard? No it felt good.
I think of a person once playing buckets in the subway in new york. The beat echoed through out the halls making me excited. I never met the person, gave them a dollar, or said complimented them. They will never know how it touched me and they never will. But that memory is burned into me forever. You can't touch everyone. Just create like you are suppose to.

If you care about the number of people who like your stuff I'm not interested.

First and foremost, you make music for the challenge and the enjoyment of playing and expressing yourself. Finding someone else to listen to it is a bonus, but really not that important.

Besides, this is the same of every creative labour. Most people don't particularly care for Mondrian.

These people are right. You do it because you're bored with life and need to get the demons out. How much do you think Van Gogh cared about being famous?

Here's another way to think about it: the more powerful your emotions, the harder it is to let them out without hurting other people. Art/music gives you a bottle to scream your soul into. If your intent is to shove it in people's faces and be famous, the contents of that bottle better be pretty mild and easily digestible.

People like Debussy were the product of a different time and society. When's the last time you heard of a wealthy businessman paying someone to write a new opera or sculpt a new masterpiece? Those in power don't value culture any more because it gets in the way of profit. Wanna make profit? Wanna be famous? Make something simple for stupid people.

p.s. this is my favorite debussy track. amazing woman performing an amazing man's music.

Lets babble about bjork by Nicholas Clayridge - Sun, 04 Dec 2016 22:01:54 EST ID:Z+BrZz3G No.447782 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

I've always had a soft spot for female vocalists. But I don't think that there's any single one I find more supreme than bjork. Her voice can take over the music, but it can also step back to a mere whisper. Bjork manages to gracefully go through so many styles, so many little moements. I find myself completely enthralled with the things that she can do, the little touches and vocal florishes. I've never heard a more beautiful voice in my life.

From the first time that I sat down and listened to post till now (some 15 years later). I find myself still astonished by the work that she does. There's so much heart, so much love, so much emotion in her voice. And as she gets into her groove she can carry me through emotional highs and lows. The quality of her voice itself can imbibe so much emotion into even the simplest songs.

Does /m/ dig bjork? Do you guys see the almost spirtual quality to her voice? Anyone know of any female vocalists they'd relate her to? Let me know whats up.

The sugarcubes: lifes too good
One of the two bands bjork was in. Think post punk. I even get shades of siousixesse and the banshees but not nearly as gothic. This has all the staples of that era you'd expect. But it dosen't fall into derges of hopeless and wailing gutairs. Sure the wail of gutairs is there, but bjorks got the showmanship of a robert smith or blondie. This is kicking, it’s the sort of stuff that screams 80s. But bjork in whatever musical style makes it work. She dosen't have nearly as many dramatic mood shifts here as her solo work, its about letting her belt out here. A siren singing us to ship wrecks. Thankfully it dosen't fall into indulgent tendancies, this is even borders on sounding like ballads you could hear on the radio at times. She grrs a little like robert smith and the cure or any of that stuff works as a comparison. If you want to feel like you've gone back in time a bit hit it. This is a different side for sure, but it makes me curious what it'd be like to hear a rock album from her nowadays.

The sugarcubes: here today tomorow next week
This is a groovy kick. Its got a good touch of aggression. This leans into the punk roots nice and hard. And hearing bjork growl is such a sweet little kid. Its got a little bit of a surf vibe at times. Fucking fun art rock. This is the sort of shit that wants you to get up and fucking move. This isn't your artrock album that has you waiting between long drawn out stuff, this is a kick ass and get to the dance floor approach. Its big sounding. Fucking love what this has going, what a sweet groove. Don't deny it, listen and feel that energy wash through you. Sizzling, alive, feels like it came off the burner fresh.

KUKL: The eye
This is bjork before the sugarcubes and it’s a doozy. While the sugarcubes are firmly sitting in the groovier part of post punk territory this is more on the dirge side. This really reminds of early sonic youth. And none of this is bad, but its quite different than the feeling you get from any of her other music. Its groovey, synthy and the gutairs are tuned down and play out wailing sounds of the macabre. It works, bjork really does wail beautifully against this backdrop and it if I didn't know better I'd call this album goth. Its got that goth rock feel. The bass sitting nice and high up. That melancholy feeling painted out in every direction. Nice and black and bleak. This does what its trying to for sure. Perfect for that nightime trip to the graveyard.

Sugarcubes: Stick around for joy
This is the last album by the sugar cubes and the worst. Now don't get me wrong it has a sweet and tender even cute quality. But its not as driving as their other material. This feels like the attempts that a lot of 80s bands made to make some more mainstream, radio palatable material. The gutairs don't hit as hard, things flow by at a relaxed pace, it s not a hard hitting album. Even bjorks delivery isn't all the way here, its not muted in a seductive little whisper its just her singing with such a relaxed tone. I get tropical vibes out of this. Like I could see listening to this on the beach. And its not all bad, I can use that once in awhile. But its not the kicker that the other material is.
