weird electronic experimental bass/funk music that isn't mainstream EDM will eventually take place over rock in the mainstream, years from now. I'm predicting it now. The genre doesnt really have a name yet other than "bass" "weird bass" "freeform bass" etc. This is a very vast strange genre that encompasses many sounds. I believe it to be inspired by drum n bass and new funk.

different variations of the sound im talking about:

I thought about it a bit and realised you'll be right at some point. But who really cares? The mainstream is increasingly irrelevant anyway. What matters is what is actually being created. If a genre becomes big, a lot of the promising talent ends up being pressured or choked into producing mediocre shit. The further something is underground the better it gets. The really good shit rises to the top but isn't scooped away and put into the big old pot of shit for mass consumption.

You're not really selling this to me and it doesn't really do much for me, but I think you should just enjoy this shit while it's good. If your prediction comes true it'll suck for a long time. If you're lucky it will eventually retreat from the mainstream and stop sucking again and maybe even enjoy a renaissance. You want to prey that it gets over and done with and can go back to being good.

It won't replace rock though, rock is just another genre among many and has been for a long time.

As an aside though I do think we'll see a lot of electronic genres filling similar niches to existing genres. As people get the hang of being creative they'll both create new spaces that didn't exist and revisit old ones. Brostep for example basically tapped into the same low intelligence heaviness that nu metal did and "futuristic techno" is basically psytrance that rips of slayer riffs. There's been experimentation on similar grounds to jazz and funk for a much longer time. Given maturity of the medium eventually there'll be an analogue for most genres and then it gets interesting. At some point the genre barriers will break electronic music won't be another genre but just another set of instruments. I want to live to see that brave new world but I would hate to see it done badly. It's getting inside not just the melodies but all the elements of music and using the less finite nature of the electronic medium to push them further. Not just making a set of wubs frame Fsharp7 with a diminished fifth and calling it jazz.

I saw Tool perform in Montreal last year. Before the show they were obviously playing music over the P.A. I heard an absolutely epic song that I’d love to listen to again but I have no idea what it was. Sound Hound was like gtfo so I recorded a snippet on my phone. The quality’s is the absolute worst but it is somewhat audible. Can anyone listen to this and tell me what song it is? Or at least what band?

I made a joke that Lil Dicky's "Lemme Freak" could be retorted by 20 Fingers' "Little Dick Man." That someone should do a mashup. Does anyone here want to do it? None of my friends thought it was funny. Why? I'm autistic and don't understand. I shrieked and cackled with joy when "Little Dick Man" was shown to me because I've worked as a domme and one of my services was size humiliation.

I'm gonna have $300-500 to get started on my first DAWless noise set soon. I have some stuff left over from when I was using a DAW then my rig got stolen that I'm going to sell: an audio interface, Yamaha HS5 speakers, and a Push2. Anyways, does anyone have an archive list of gear I have to choose from? I want to start watching demos while I figure out how to sell everything. I have no idea where to start but want to march to the beat of my own drum instead of asking other people what's good.

Oh! Like a list of every single pedal or other hardware by each brand. Including old parts. I don't need the latest and greatest and a lot of my set might be circuit bent at first because I'll only have money to mutilate toys and collect amps for a while. I just want to look at all the gear myself - see all choices possible before I come into money for that. I'm manic right now and have too many ideas but I want a mix of "legit" stuff and fun thrift store finds. I could record all kinds of material to work with and upload online once I'm set up with a computer and DAW again. I will still look at what you linked to, thanks!! xoxo

Freal tho

The track I uploaded recently, mastered to -.07dB has had the fuck compressed out of it, and the volume reduced by around half.

I reuploaded a few time with different master bus setting, and toned stuff waaay down but it still fucks my shit up.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Heres the track, you can DL the .WAV to hear the difference in quality, and volume:

Yeah it’s changed but ah it works well enough. Probably something about SoundCloud GO being the money-making model now.

Something else is bound to come along and that’s fine but I’m cool with SC for now. Like Lofi being hip, one day people will see aesthetic in today’s SoundCloud issues. I embrace it as the modern style to be cherished.

it only effects the one track tho, and everything else on the site is at level. It's not even that loud of a track compared to some of the other electronic music on SC.

I don't think it has anything to do with culture, but an error that SC is currently unaware of, or some sort of error with my upload. I tried multiple version and they were all treated the same way with the compression algorithm.

The melvins run the gamut from experimental punk rock to slow as fuck doom and sludge. If you want faster then start with Houdini. Get the live version because it's with Ipecac and they'll get more royalties and the bullshit grubbing majors who fucked them won't get your money. The sound quality is great, it's done in an empty warehouse and over 2 nights and you won't regret it.

After houdini I'd say hold it in is pretty energetic. A lot of their newer stuff is faster. The first 3 or 4 albums are their sludgiest stuff but after that they went in all sorts of directions. If you want political and more "punk" then there's the album with Jello Bialfra. The new double album, a walk with love and death got some good reviews though I've not gotten round to giving it a real listen, apparently it's 2 very different beasts.

As the former poster said, Houdini is sort of the gold standard for Melvins accessibility. That being said, if it's the sludginess of it that bothers you, Gluey Porch Treatments and Ozma aren't particularly slow compared to Houdini, although they are a bit less accessible and a bit less polished (from earlier in their career).

Stoner Witch is a little gem of an album, but the best song on it is slow as fuck (At the stake).

Since you specifically mentioned Zodiac I'm just gonna drop a few song links from various albums so you can see if you find something you like.

This is from their most "metal" album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDFG9eq90aQ#t=24m22s

Stag was their last release on Atlantic records. They'd really started to cultivate their eccentricities there, but the opening track is straight up heavy goodness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbJRNqQc8ME

Opening track about the government measuring dick volume changes in suspected pedophiles from the all-around hilarious and amazing collaboration with Jello Biafra:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjC2dAYLSdc
Not really representative of their work, but easily one of my favourites (big Dead Kennedys fan). A great place to start really if you are more into punk than sludge.
