funny story. i was organizing my records yesterday and realized I have 11 YES albums.

If you haven't listened to Relayer or Drama yet, those are 2 insanely under-rated albums. Especially drama.

OP if you like Yes and that type of classical composition in a rock format then listen to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT1prDqJodY

I haven't heard much from Yes other than Fragile (my favorite by them) and Closer to the Edge, but I fucking LOVE prog, the more psychedelic the better.

I guarantee you will appreciate Phish. People like to shit on them for being a "drug band" but there's legitimately nothing to hate about them unless you're a miserable fuck with no sense of adventure. Plus they're hands down some of if not the most skilled musicians I've ever heard.

Also check out 2112 by Rush if you haven't, they're a little more mainstream "radio-rock" than Yes or Phish but they still rock out and experiment. Dream Theater and Tool are also good choices if you want something more metal.

Other good choices (and my favorite albums by them):

  • Soft Machine (Bundles)
  • Frank Zappa (Hot Rats)
  • Jeff Beck (Live at Ronnie Scott's)
  • Primus (Sailing the Seas of Cheese) - again, more metal than the others

Any of you fucks like Shibuya Kei? Really gotten into it over the past few months. I really like the sorta jazzy element it has - and there's some stuff that so weird I can't even put it into much of a genre without doing it justice. So far I've gotten into Pizzicato Five, Frenesi, Flippers Guitar, Serani Poji, Capsule, Plus Tech Squeeze Box, Moon Kanna, Hazel Nuts Chocolate, stuff like that.

So am I alone in my tastes or am I in good company?

What does /m/ think of Modest Mouse? I found this band about a year ago and I think they are amazing, mostly their first 3 albums.

I ask because I think it is great music to get high to. The lyrics are just the best for your brain when you're smoking. Anybody a fan?

What does that have to do with Radiohead? Kind of grating. Don't get me wrong, I love MM, and they are sometimes grating, but that's shit.

Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks and Lonesome Crowded West are probably my favourite things they put out. Moon and Antarctica was the last amazing album. Good News is decent for a time. New stuff is shit.

Normally I don't get too passionate about music, but I've loved Modest Mouse since hearing The Lonesome Crowded West on DXM a couple years ago. The geographic themes really grabbed my attention, and there were plenty of catchy/exciting tracks to hold it. Teeth Like God's Shoeshine gave me a very eerie nostalgia, like I'd been seeing the same things as Isaac Brock since I was a kid.

Of course, their first two albums are my favorites; TIALDFSWNTTA for its raw emotion and TLCW for its tight storyline and abrasive sound. Some of their early EPs and compilations have good shit too. Not sure about the newer ones. I haven't listened to much of their music past Good News for People Who Love Bad News, but from what I've heard, it's not as powerful.

Before I'd listened to Modest Mouse, I wouldn't have expected something as energetic and danceable as Doin' the Cockroach from a band labeled as "indie rock". Maybe that's why I didn't give them a chance for a few years. "Indie rock" alone doesn't say much at all about the band's style.

Priscilla Honeyshit - Thu, 05 Jan 2017 00:41:09 EST ID:LmuZJJFQ No.448076 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Sad Sappy Sucker, The Lonesome Crowded, and Long drive are all you need. Earlier cuts of Modest are definitely preferable. The later albums have the songwriting and such, but they just don't equal the raw emotion of the earlier albums.

Also, Pitchfork (fwiw) has a pretty good showcase about Lonesome Crowded that is a pretty good watch.

Personally, I think MM is the classic tale of americana indie, where they made a name as sonic sojourners only to sell out once they hit middle age.

I love Modest Mouse. This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About is my favorite, absolutely perfect album, but honestly Lonesome Crowded West is just as good. It's hard to play favorites.

Building Nothing out of Something was brilliant, and Moon and Antarctica was pretty good, but I'd honestly put Good News for People Who Love Bad News ahead of it. A lot of people in this thread Talking Shit About a Pretty Good Album. The newer stuff doesn't compare to the old stuff, but they've evolved their sound and I don't think it's bad. We Were Dead was 50/50, same with this latest album.

No one has seemed to mention No One's First and You're Next. Check that out for sure, I think it's almost as good as Good News.

Great band, also, seconding this >>448077 for Built to Spill, fucking great band.

You might also like The Pixies.
