Everybody likes "Techno", Nobody likes Techno by Basil Blemmerfot - Thu, 22 Dec 2016 01:04:52 EST ID:9GImJHJT No.447922 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

I always remember finding it hard to explain to other kids I knew in highschool when I first got into the genre that "techno" was not a catch all term for electronic music in general. They always thought I meant something like Tiesto (he was just starting to become mainstream then)

Even on the net, I rarely find people who have an avid interest in this style or can distinguish it as "techno music" proper.

I know what you mean about people not hearing the difference. American EDM sounds like trash to me for the most part and I haven't heard of that much techno over there at all so I think it's a more european thing. Given it mostly came from around Germany originally it kind of makes sense. Not sure where you're from but the UK is rife with great techno. Especially Leeds since it's pretty "edgy". Manchester and Bristol are also pretty good cities for it. Here's some tracks to persue if you like:

Tex- Dense and Pika

Sky was Pink- James Holden remix

I normally get pretty decent suggestions from spotify for similar artisits to these. Paul Woolford, Bicep, Nina Kravitz (bit more housey) and Seth Troxler are also some of my faves.

Techno has a funny history in that it is an American form of electronic music, in that it was largely pioneered by suburban blacks in Michigan who were influenced both by traditional and popular black music as well as the electronic music coming out of Europe, especially German groups like Kraftwerk, but it is not really treated as an American form of music, let alone a form of "black music", in that regard , and in fact ended up developing a greater popularity overseas in the European music scene whose particular developments of the genre and its offshoots made its way back to the United States through the rave scene of the 1990's.

Well, the Belleville Three are a good start as they're widely regarded as the primary originators of the genre as the world knows it.

Juan Atkins is probably my personal favorite of the three, but Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May also have some classic burners. For Juan Atkins, I'd recommend his work on the Enter album by Cybotron. However that album is more accurately described as an electro album with some early Techno elements which would become more focused in Atkins' later work. I would listen to that and his "Classics" compilation and his Deep Space album, both of which were released under the name Model 500.

Derrick May is most known for his single "Strings of Life", which is featured on his Innovator: Soundtrack for the Tenth Planet album as well as the expanded multidisc version of this album. He normally releases under the name Rhythim is Rhythim or Mayday. Kevin Saunderson also releases under multiple names, but is most known for his work as part of Inner City with his wife, so you can check out their albums, or you can listen to Saunderson's "Elevator" compilation which has some of his solo and duo work.

Pretty much anyone who has released tracks on the Underground Resistance label and Transmat, KMS or Metroplex (May's, Saunderson's and Atkins' labels respectively) is worth listening to. I would recommend Suburban Knight's "My Sol Dark Direction" & the "Red Planet Compilation" by The Martian myself. Drexciya also has some good techno/nu-electro releases. There is also Mike Banks, Carl Craig, DJ Rolando, etc. Interstellar Fugitives 1 & 2 contain many Underground Resistance singles, which is good since some of the artists in that group/label aren't known for releasing studio albums as much as singles and compilations of their singles. There is also a classic compilation from the 80's called "Techno, the New Dance Sound of Detroit" which is a good introduction to old school techno. Listening to that compilation's tracks side by side with the Underground Resistance comps is helpful in discerning the difference between the two waves of Techno coming out of Detroi…

ive recently downloaded FL studio and have been making industrial sounding beats, can someone explain exactly what I need equipment wise to record guitar to my laptop over them? I know a need a pre-amp but i dont know what else I need or how to use the equipment, I want to make Godflesh or Sonic Violence type music so any other equipment you could suggest that would be useful to do that's helpful too

Rebecca Blatherway - Thu, 29 Dec 2016 14:14:48 EST ID:gppHpSlY No.447995 Ignore Report Quick Reply
To record stuff, Ableton Live is much more intuitive than FL Studio. I've used and still use both, but for recording shit, Ableton is just less of a clusterfuck, plus you have easy ways to create loops, fades, automations etc. without cluttering the fucking playlist with 10000 automation clips or having to MANUALLY route individual audio tracks to the mixer

With ableton is just open up a audio track, set the Audio Interface's input as the main input, arm the track and you're good to record. Easy cut/paste of everything, doesn't stimulate you to reuse the same clips, and they don't end up stockpiled in the channel rack like in FL Studio.

What you want to get to make the audio go into your DAW (Digital audio workstation aka FL ableton cubase etc.) is an audio interface, which is essentially a external soundcard. Plug that into the pc, set the DAW to use that as the audio device (with ASIO drivers of course), then plug the guitar to the interface and the speakers to the interface's output.

You need an external soundcard. Basically a box that plugs into your computer via USB and has quarter inch and/or XLR inputs. Then you either plug your guitar directly into that or you mic your amp and plug the amp into the sound card.

Check craigslist, you can get some tascam audio interfaces for less than $100 usually.

Above guy is semi-right. Ableton is generally better than FL for this purpose. FL is generally geared toward producers rather than recording artists and recording external audio is a little more cumbersome) however, as a rule, ignore people who start telling you which DAW you should be using and use whatever you're comfortable with/like best/can afford

Do you guys like gravediggaz? It's pretty weird but imho it's a sleeper classic if you like the theatrical wu-tang current of rap. Some tracks are a bit shaky...but there is great energy and the production is tight because rza.

6 feet under is one of my favorite rap albums. one of my favorite records (that I own) is the "double suicide" jawn with the alternate vocal version of 1 800 SUICIDE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h016eNYDw_U

"back in the ghetto, it rained for 40 days..."

their other albums don't come close to 6 feet under though, but prince paul wasn't really involved in those.

I wish "horrorcore" took off more.

I bought gravediggaz 6 feet deep in 2002! one of my faveourite albums growing up. all my friends were like "the beats are alright, but isnt it a bit morbid?"

They are some of my fave songs, but the whole 6 feet deep album is amazing.

The second album really changed from the first album you can tell that prince paul was not really involved in it, but afaik he was working on Psychoanalysis at the time so i guess we have that. Prince paul usually brings that kind of tripping/acid element to his work which is what i feel the second gravedigga album was missing.

Also I wasn't really paying attention to track titles at the time, just kinda let it play in the background. So it'll also require a few more listens from me so I can really get a better feel for it. But generally I thought the flow and wordplay was as strong as ever. Production didn't seem to be consistently as hot though which was disappointing for me, as I'm a huge fan of El-P's production. And the tracks toward the middle of this thing I have issue with just had some kind of lame hooks and weren't all that memorable.

and i just started listening to Bell Witch recently

I've also been trying to find acoustic doom type bands, pickings are thin but I like the idea,

bandcamp band called Form/Void has a doom track or two
and the whole second cd from Swallow The Sun's Songs From The North album is acoustic doomish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg1_4DBs7OY
