Intro to punk music. It took me years to get a feel for the broad, overall feel for punk, and the problem is that people tend to focus either on hardcore, or early punk, or the crusty/folky stuff. The goal is, give an intro to most everything, together.

Thanks for your contribution. I personally am not interested in this at this moment. I'll be making my own thread in a while. Hopefully somebody gets something out of yours :-)

I used to be quite a punk nerd, here's some notes on your primer:
  • Those three bands were hugely influential but proto-punk, i.e. the seeds which blossomed into the real "punk movement" had a wider scope than that, which included pub rock bands (like the Count Bishops, Eddie & The Hot-Rods, Dr. Feelgood, Kilburn & The High Roads), glam rock, krautrock and garage rock
  • I wouldn't lump "NYC Punk" in with No Wave, I think the No Wave groups had a distinct sound and approach from the local punk scene
  • The Cramps are awesome but not a psychobilly band, it's a label they always rejected, though maybe one or two of their songs sorta fit the bill. Some suggestions: Guana Batz, Tiger Army, Reverend Horton Heat, Demented Are Go!. You could also look into cowpunk, which is along the same lines
  • Mention straightedge without mentioning Minor Threat?
  • The Specials and Madness were 2nd wave ska, sometimes called 2-tone after their label; they have punk flavours but the sound is closer to original ska than ska punk and 3rd wave ska, like the other bands you mentioned here.
  • Uh, "Emocore" isn't really the term to use, whoever told you that told you from their bum
  • Billy Bragg is a straight-up folk singer, I'm not sure he's ever done really "folk punk" stuff. There's a bunch of more obvious folk punk bands you could mention like Dropkick Murphys, the Violent Femmes, Flogging Molly, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Pat the Bunny's various projects, the Pogues or maybe Gogol Bordello even

Hope this is helpful and interesting, am happy to suggest more bands if anyone's interested! Just noticed you did a couple of edits, hope I've not mentioned something you've already changed~

For sure, thanks!

>>453746
You're certainly right that I could expand the proto-punk section a lot, especially with pub rock, which certainly set the stage for the British punk movement.
The Cramps may not have considered themselves psychobilly, but they defined that genre. Everyone in it was effectively following their lead, much the same way all horror punk bands follow the Misfits' lead. On a related note, it's a little funny that you don't consider the Cramps a psychobilly band, but you do consider Minor Threat a straight edge band even though they rejected that term (despite coining it)
Emocore absolutely is a common term, referring specifically to the sound of the early DC Revolution Summer bands, as well as later bands that followed their sound.
Good suggestions for folk punk. Maybe including Billy Bragg was a stretch, but he was critically influential on folk punk.

>>453747
GG Allin is really tricky for categorization purposes, because he's always been a bit of an anomaly. Because of when he was active, some people categorize him as hardcore - he wasn't really part of that scene, but he was embraced in the 80s underground. His early sound was very Dead Boys influenced, and nearly verged on power pop. Then it of course got heavier and heavier, and later he experimented with country.
There's a term some people use for what he and future shock rock punk bands like the Dwarves and Clockcleaner do - "scum punk."

>>453748 The Cramps got the term "psychobilly" from the Johnny Cash song One Piece At A Time. The Cramps obviously were a big influence but they come from a long and equally-influential lineage of hot wild crazy rock n roll nutters, psychobilly is just rockabilly but somehow even wilder. Psychobilly bands took drank from the same pond as the Cramps and took it further. The psychobillies always take things too far. Point me to a psychobilly Cramps song? I'm thinking maybe their cover of Love Me is closest. Not that it really matters :) I'm wearing my Cramps jumper as I type this haha

Nah I never said i consider Minor Threat a straightedge band, like you said I only suggested it just because they coined it... I don't even really consider "straightedge" so much a punk subgenre as a mindset, they're still just punk and hardcore and emo bands and stuff who mainly sing about their cleanliness. A few of the bands listed could fit in more than one label like that. Idk dude like Rites Of Spring were one of the first emo bands, "emocore" is a bit like saying "ATM machine" or "PIN number".

Quality is less relevant to this list than relevance. The Vaselines are great, but calling them punk is a bit of a stretch. They were jangle pop, an important influence on twee pop, and they were part of the C86 indie scene.

It's not a shoddy list, its a list with limited space. I would include all that stuff if I had more room, but I have to make cuts to keep this list usable across the different boards. I understood your reasoning for being critical of the term, but I think it's irrelevant because again, it is a very common term for a specific subgenre, that being throwbacks to the early Revolution Summer sound. As I explained.
You're getting passive aggressive, so I apologize for provoking butthurt in you.

>>453786 Nah man, not the limited space, I mean your categorisation and choices. I'm only a bit butthurt because I took the time to give you pointers, this is stuff I've studied for 20-odd years. I was trying to think of it from the perspective of someone who'd use it, like if I came up to and said "hey man you're into punk, I love ska, can you recommend me some ska punk bands?" and you said Madness and the Specials, I'd be like uh, u wot m8...

Honestly not trying to flame you or anything, reading the list it seems to me like you know your shit about some things, but to fill out the list you've had a quick glance at wikipedia lists for subgenres you're less familiar with? Am I far off? I always think being accurate is more important than catering to common misnomers, because then you're just perpetuating misinformation rather than being a source of knowledge.

And you've still not shown me a psychobilly song by the Cramps
