Hey, /mma/, what female fighters do you think are on the juice? Pic related. Bitch is hella lucky the UFC didn't test her, although given what a joke her match was, I'm not sure if getting busted would have been more or less humiliating.

What's with the Reebok uniform sponsorship deal? It sucks all round, even for UFC it sucks you'd think they would've made more money allowing a sponsorship free market and keeping their sponsorship taxes (which were extreme) http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2015/5/21/8633115/ufc-interview-ryan-jimmo-fighters-abusive-relationship-reebok

Anybody notice that UFC187 hardly anybody walked out with sponsorship (except for Cormier waving that Monster can around)? That's because for 6mos Dana White has been saying Reebok is coming in so all the fighters were dropped, lot's of them don't have a single sponsor anymore since the warning came out.

>tfw the fighters are claiming they made more money in MFC than UFC due to taxes and now Reebok scam

There's no way guys like GSP will ever come back now, he only qualifies for $40,000 sponsorship money share under the new Reebok agreement, it's the max any of them can get now.

I realize Dana is passing all sorts of "lockeroom bonuses" under the table to fighters and keeping it off the books so every fighter doesn't ask for it, but c'mon $40k sponsorship is a joke for a top fighter.

Reebok also makes "special" sponsorship deals with certain people, i.e. Paige VanZant is making a hell of a lot more in sponsorship money than she's supposed to be making. All the champions are also under special deals, so I have no idea why they have a $50k tier if they all have their own deal anyways. I do hope a fighter's union happens though, it's really bad for the sport for UFC to be taking as much of the pie as they take while also hiring more and more jabronis to work for nothing only once a year.

Are you a martial artist or a Martialist?
Because clearly being a Martialist is superior, as you can claim to be able to beat any traditional or Mixed martial artist by shooting them. Also you don't need to train, or have any ranks or qualifications, which I think suits this guy fine.
But it does require constant posing with a knife for any photo opportunity, and lifting weights with your eyebrow.

Celebratory thread for one of the most underrated UFC fighters, potentially of all time?

It's clear UFC brass love the guy, but he's never been huge with the casual fans, he's always been an MMA favourite, but maybe it's time people really appreciate the dude. Yes, he's been claimed to be a boring point fighter who wins fights on decisions, but Frankie always gives it his all and is NEVER in a dull fight, tonight included. Yes, they're tactical affairs, but they're never uninteresting wrestlefests even when they're one sided, and if they are, its only because he's the stronger side of the coin, which is rare considering his level of competition.

Edgar apparently just broke the UFC octagon time count, which for a lot of people means "hurrdurr point fighter" but on the other side of the coin, it means he's the most experienced fighter in UFC when it comes to time. It shows that because he used to often get cracked in a fight but now it's so rare that he's actually hurt or caught clean and rocked, and he's not hard to hit, especially in the early rounds when he comes forward and hasn't got his timing down.

He also has two trilogies under his belt, one he emphatically won with a knockout nobody thought was possible and seem to have forgotten. He beat BJ Penn three times (some people say BJ won the first fight, I think a lot of that is hinged on BJ's prestige, I had Frankie winning rounds 3-5 and BJ was never the same after that third round for whatever reason). He also gave Aldo and Bendo stiff competition, both undisputed Lightweight and Featherweight champions respectively during their run. A lot of people thought he beat Bendo at least once.

I'm not trying to sit here and portray Frankie Edgar as the best fighter of all time, just he's at a level now where it's unfair to shit on him and act like he's not earned his stripes. And he just made Faber look fucking average. Faber who never loses a title fight and even then it's at least competitive if not close or controversial. He'll go down as one of UFC's most underrated fighters, I suppose because he's not as marketable as a GSP or a Conor McGregor, bu…

I thought his fight today was pretty dull, just my opinion though. Bisping vs Dollaway was a more enjoyable fight to me, and it wasn't even considered a "superfight" like this was supposed to be. Neither of them were in trouble at any point of the fight. Also, I wouldn't attribute his making Faber look like a jabroni wholly to Edgar, it just seemed like Faber wasn't doing anything at all, and certainly not going for the chokes he's normally well-known for. Again, just my opinion, I certainly respect yours.

If Frankie isn't my favourite fighter of all time, he's in my top 3. His last two fights with Gray Maynard are the kind that make a person's career, and that's coming off of his first 2 fights with Penn as well. The way he never gives up and always comes back is so inspirational, I don't think there's another fighter in the UFC with as much raw heart and determination as this guy has. He gets absolutely demolished in the first round of both of those fights and still comes back, to even knock out Maynard in the 3rd fight. It's incredible how resilient this guy is, and you hardly ever see him get tired either, or if he does, you don't notice it because he pushes through it. Both Bendo fights were awesome to watch as well, and both were so close. Frankie getting his nose kicked off in I think the 1st fight and somehow managing to survive that fight is incredible, let alone that he made it a competitive fight.

Let's not forget that during his time at lightweight as well, he was walking around at about 160lb max, he hardly cut weight at all, and was up against guys up to just under 200lb in Maynard's case. The way he keeps his technique and foot work up while still being beaten up and at a point where he should be tired is a thing of beauty. I can watch his fights for hours on repeat after each other because his footwork and all the different ways he enters and exits a combo is just so magical to me, the way he times his shots as well. I can't think of another fighter who does it as consistently as him because his footwork is fantastic.

I was really hoping that he would've beat Aldo because he is more than good enough to be champion of that division, but Aldo also is a god himself. I think Frankie might beat him if they fought again, but I believe he has a better chance against McGregor. I don't know, his striking and spacing is pretty good but no-one has been able to put away Frankie and he's faced some of the biggest hits from the biggest hitters and kept going. Size may be an issue on the takedowns as well, but Frankie's been fighting bigger guys his whole career, and McGregor is only an inch taller than Maynard and I would doubt he's near Mayn…

I've been a huge fan since I saw him whip Tyson Griffon as a 6:1 dog in his first UFC fight, and he's been my favorite since he whipped BJ the second time.

>>56024

A technical masterpiece for the last 3 rounds, I really enjoyed it either way both as an exhibition of skill and because I love Edgar.

Of course it's not the gutsy thriller that his Maynard/Henderson fights were but it was really up to Faber to make it that way. Edgar was ALWAYS going to dominate the technical battle and Faber should have known going in that he was going to have to make the fight a little ugly, open it up a little, to win. It's just a little unfortunate for a guy who is so good at scrambling, who is so impossible to hold down to be so conservative when he's getting beaten striking but I guess you don't train to be the second best guy in the cage.

Most of the people I know that talk to other grapplers on the internet they don't know use like Facebook groups and pages and stuff. Just watch out because most sites I've seen though are really cliquey and only like those who talk about their own affiliates and stuff.

Are there any wins/losses that you have discovered in fighter's careers that are entirely surprising?

There are numerous in the sport, but I just discovered that Akihiro Gono, one of those jouryneyman, middle-tier Japanese fighters with a 34-19 record at one point defeated Hector Lombard and Gegard Mousasi (by armbar) in succession, being one of the few breaks in their typical winning ways.

Man I was so hyped for that fight, I was expecting some kind of huge war where they both run at each other for 3 rounds, but I guess with guys so aggressive an early knockout shouldn't have been a surprise.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I'm pretty sure in the Matt Hughes vs Carlos Newton fight Hughes lifts up Newton while he's being held in a triangle and holds him against the fence, then either slams him and passes out or passes out and slams him and the slam knocks out Carlos Newton, but the referee doesn't notice Hughes is out and announces him the winner when he comes to in about 5 seconds. Pretty hilarious waking up from a triangle choke and being told you're the new Welterweight champion.

Advice for "getting into" MMA? by E2theC !!u2kH6VnN - Fri, 08 May 2015 13:04:12 EST ID:i3U46kQ6 No.55983 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

I'm a boxing fan but haven't really taken the time to get into watching MMA. I've watched a few matches on YouTube, and a couple of Invicta PPVs, but that's it.

A few friends were interested in watching the big Pacman/Mayweather fight, though they were disappointed by how one-sided it ended up being, as was I. I asked them if they wanted to get into watching boxing with me, because I thought it would be fun to have our own favorites, argue about who's the best, etc., and both expressed that they'd rather start watching MMA regularly than boxing.

That's fine, but I like to delve into a thing and really understand it, know the big names of the past, who's on top now, who the up-and-comers are, what has changed over the past few years, what's changing in the near future, etc., and I have no idea whatsoever where to start with trying to understand MMA. How is it scored? Are there any serious competitors to UFC? What matches do I need to see?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Pic only somewhat related, but I hope she gets her title back.

>Does MMA generally do round-by-round scoring
One thing I liked about Pride FC is that judges judged the whole fight, and not round by round.

>are there any major MMA names with a boxing background?
Can't think of any current/younger guys, but Stephan Bonner won the golden gloves & Vitor Belfort was big into boxing.

Nearly all the guys these days train boxing though, but very few people are going to "rely" on boxing because it's too easily defended in MMA rules.

You might want to watch Royce Gracie vs Art Jimmerson if you want to see what happens to a boxer in an MMA ring.

>Are there any serious competitors to UFC?
Bellator is the biggest competition. Their top guys can compete seriously in the UFC... and watch out for Eddie Alvarez & Zach Makovsky, who sorta recently jumped from Bellator to UFC.

And just to add to my point, in last night's Fight Night, one of the judges for the Miocic vs Hunt fight scored the third round a 10-9, despite how one-sided it was and the fact that Hunt was damn near blind in one eye from the beating. Still amazed that between Hunt's corner and the ref, noone had the sense to stop it til the fifth.

Not an idiot, biased. Of course an Aussie ref isn't gonna end the fight for the hometown boy. Hell, remember when Hunt was getting pissed on on the ground in I think it was the fifth? People start chanting "stand them up" and the ref threatens to do just that while Hunt can't do ANYTHING and it's obvious that all that would happen would be a single leg followed by more GNP until the end of time.

Hello, and welcome!
I'm thrilled about your interest in our niche sport. I think having read what others have posted you should have some degree of familiarity with the sport.

My brother trained MMA for several years, and he got me into it when we were living together at university. There are a lot of bad stereotypes about the fans of the sport, and they are few and far between. I'd usually only go to smaller venues to watch my brother fight, and when I did I'd feel kind of out of place, due to how different I was from the other fans. But I digress....

You've picked a good time to get interested, as one of the best cards is coming the weekend after next. You could go to a bar to see it, pay for it, or use... let us say "other" methods of watching it. Anyways, it's a fantastic card from top to bottom!

The main event is a championship fight between two contenders: Anthony Johnson and Daniel Cormier (Since the champion recently got stripped of his belt). Since you're a boxing fan I'd suggest you watch some of Johnson's striking, it's absolutely vicious. Cormier is a wrestler and tough grinder, but he's not boring. The fight is really a toss-up for me.

The co-main is the Middleweight championship fight between champion Chris Weidman and aging legend Vitor Belfort. Chris shocked the world when he defeated Silva twice, and then solidified his status by defeating Machida. Belfort has been destroying fighters lately, however due to TRT controversy the fight was postponed for like a year. I'm pretty sure Weidman will retain the belt here, but crazier things have happened, (See UFC 173).

Anyways I recognize that, that is a a UFC event and there are cards before then. I know I'll be watching Bellator this Friday, but the card isn't as spectacular; nor is the UFC Fight Night the next day. But since watching the sport and finishing up university is all I do these days, it's my one own escape.

As far as competitors for the UFC goes. I think the recent Reebok deal will hurt them, Bellator has some quality fighters (but Bellator also likes to put on "freak fights" which I watch, but most fans don't like). WSOF and ONE FC also have up-and-comers. But the UFC does definitely possess almost all of the elite fighters.

Interesting thing here. Manny's claims that he had a shoulder injury were kind of controversial, but apparently he does have to have surgery, which adds quite a bit of legitimacy. In addition, a year is plenty of time to recuperate.

Meanwhile, Mayweather says he's having fight 49 in September. After that, it'd probably be around May before he'd want to have another fight, which means that, if it's actually roughly a year before a rematch between the two, Mayweather would be looking to solidify his victory over Pacquiao by taking him on at full health at the same time as passing Marciano's 49-0 record.

Though I think Mayweather will still have an advantage, a fight with Pacquiao where the latter is at full health, and with the understanding of what he's up against that this fight hopefully gave him, should be significantly more interesting than this one turned out to be.

Yeah, I'd love to see a second match, especially if Manny can find a way to actually land his punches.

Businessmen being businessmen. Both sides couldn't have dreamed of this situation, and the rematch is going to eclipse the first fight in revenue hand over fist.

There will of course be a rematch, too much money not to do it and all Floyd loves is money. Dana White correct when he said the lawsuits would start immediately after the fight with both sides suing each other for more money the lawsuits probably won't end until the rematch(s).

Floyd is likely walking away with $250 million if Yahoo sports is correct and the buys were 5 million.

Oscar de la Hoya vs Julio Cesar Chavez
THIS is a boxing match. THIS is the sort of fight people were expecting.
All that happened in Mayweather v. Pacquiao was Manny looking like he was too scared of taking a punch from Floyd to really come at him as hard as he needed to, and Floyd being Floyd. Dancing around doing fuck all, getting JUST enough punches in at JUST the right time to get points without having to risk anything. Two guys pussyfooting around, playing it safe.

Or maybe it's all rigged and Manny threw the fight.
But that night, Manny looked like a huge pussy and Floyd looked like he didnt even care about the match. Probably because he knew the judges would vote in favor of him in the end.
I always said this fight would only go two ways. Manny knocking out Floyd or Floyd winning via a decision.

Don't think Manny threw the fight, but he knew he was cooked and took the fight for the money considering he had a torn rotator cuff either before the fight or during it. Supposedly he's getting surgery on his shoulder this week and will be out for 9-12 months. Guess that puts the kibosh on any chances of MayPac II in September.

It was torn before the fight. Pac fought because he didn't want the fight to not happen.

LOL

Seriously though. Don't watch Mayweather ever again (and lucky for you, he's probably retiring after his next fight). All his fights go down the same way. He's too good.

If people were expecting De La Hoya vs Chavez, they were either delusional or know nothing about Mayweather.

Manny won two, maybe three of the rounds, at least one of them with a fucked up shoulder. Fact is, many boxers wouldn't win a single round against Mayweather. If we could have a rematch with Pacman in full health, I would watch it (though not for $100 again unless the undercard was fucking stacked, as a group of us ended up chipping in to buy the PPV).

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2421109-ronda-rouseys-book-wont-be-sold-in-wal-mart-stores-because-shes-too-violent

>Wal-Mart apparently draws a line in the sand when it comes to books penned by undefeated women's bantamweight champions. According to Richard Johnson of the New York Post's Page Six, the popular retailer is reportedly refusing to sell Ronda Rousey's memoir, "My Fight/Your Fight."

>The reason? Wal-Mart believes Rousey is "too violent."

>Rousey's publisher Judith Regan added, "I'm shocked, shocked to discover that censorship is going on in America!"

I guess she's never purchased music at a Walmart. They've been censoring shit for decades. I still remember when I bought Vulgar Display of Power without looking at it, Got it home and saw songs missing and "Diamond" Darrell playing guitar.

>Wal-Mart believes Rousey is "too violent."
Like, her job is, or they think she goes around beating the shit out of people on the street? Like, some random person comes up to Rousey and asks for an autograph, she cackles wildly and puts them in the hospital for four months. Is this the Rousey that Wal-Mart believes in? Or do they just mean that MMA is too violent?

Because I'm pretty sure if Muhammad Ali wrote a memoir, Wal-Mart would be willing to sell it, so even that seems like a stretch.

Maybe it's because she's a woman with a violent profession? Hmm...

Now I want Kankaanpaa to write an autobiography. Or even just a blog with an English translation.
