Are there any wins/losses that you have discovered in fighter's careers that are entirely surprising?

There are numerous in the sport, but I just discovered that Akihiro Gono, one of those jouryneyman, middle-tier Japanese fighters with a 34-19 record at one point defeated Hector Lombard and Gegard Mousasi (by armbar) in succession, being one of the few breaks in their typical winning ways.

>pic unrelated, though Lawler had some losses back in the days (like to Mayhem Miller)

There was that one double KO with Shoney Carter refereeing.
It looked like he declared himself the winner, lol.

Man I was so hyped for that fight, I was expecting some kind of huge war where they both run at each other for 3 rounds, but I guess with guys so aggressive an early knockout shouldn't have been a surprise.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I'm pretty sure in the Matt Hughes vs Carlos Newton fight Hughes lifts up Newton while he's being held in a triangle and holds him against the fence, then either slams him and passes out or passes out and slams him and the slam knocks out Carlos Newton, but the referee doesn't notice Hughes is out and announces him the winner when he comes to in about 5 seconds. Pretty hilarious waking up from a triangle choke and being told you're the new Welterweight champion.

When Anderson Silva lost to Daiju Takase. Anderson just came off a very impressive win against Carlos Newton and everyone expected Anderson to steamroll Takase. What a loss indeed.

Yeah, any of Anderson's losses are pretty special. Really got out-grappled in that fight and that transition to the triangle was pretty damn slick.

Jeremy Horn has 91 wins and 22 losses with notable 3 wins over Chael Sonnen as well as head-kick KO'ing Forrest Griffin and subbing Chuck Liddell

Advice for "getting into" MMA? by E2theC !!u2kH6VnN - Fri, 08 May 2015 13:04:12 EST ID:i3U46kQ6 No.55983 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

I'm a boxing fan but haven't really taken the time to get into watching MMA. I've watched a few matches on YouTube, and a couple of Invicta PPVs, but that's it.

A few friends were interested in watching the big Pacman/Mayweather fight, though they were disappointed by how one-sided it ended up being, as was I. I asked them if they wanted to get into watching boxing with me, because I thought it would be fun to have our own favorites, argue about who's the best, etc., and both expressed that they'd rather start watching MMA regularly than boxing.

That's fine, but I like to delve into a thing and really understand it, know the big names of the past, who's on top now, who the up-and-comers are, what has changed over the past few years, what's changing in the near future, etc., and I have no idea whatsoever where to start with trying to understand MMA. How is it scored? Are there any serious competitors to UFC? What matches do I need to see?

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Pic only somewhat related, but I hope she gets her title back.

>Does MMA generally do round-by-round scoring
One thing I liked about Pride FC is that judges judged the whole fight, and not round by round.

>are there any major MMA names with a boxing background?
Can't think of any current/younger guys, but Stephan Bonner won the golden gloves & Vitor Belfort was big into boxing.

Nearly all the guys these days train boxing though, but very few people are going to "rely" on boxing because it's too easily defended in MMA rules.

You might want to watch Royce Gracie vs Art Jimmerson if you want to see what happens to a boxer in an MMA ring.

>Are there any serious competitors to UFC?
Bellator is the biggest competition. Their top guys can compete seriously in the UFC... and watch out for Eddie Alvarez & Zach Makovsky, who sorta recently jumped from Bellator to UFC.

And just to add to my point, in last night's Fight Night, one of the judges for the Miocic vs Hunt fight scored the third round a 10-9, despite how one-sided it was and the fact that Hunt was damn near blind in one eye from the beating. Still amazed that between Hunt's corner and the ref, noone had the sense to stop it til the fifth.

Not an idiot, biased. Of course an Aussie ref isn't gonna end the fight for the hometown boy. Hell, remember when Hunt was getting pissed on on the ground in I think it was the fifth? People start chanting "stand them up" and the ref threatens to do just that while Hunt can't do ANYTHING and it's obvious that all that would happen would be a single leg followed by more GNP until the end of time.

Hello, and welcome!
I'm thrilled about your interest in our niche sport. I think having read what others have posted you should have some degree of familiarity with the sport.

My brother trained MMA for several years, and he got me into it when we were living together at university. There are a lot of bad stereotypes about the fans of the sport, and they are few and far between. I'd usually only go to smaller venues to watch my brother fight, and when I did I'd feel kind of out of place, due to how different I was from the other fans. But I digress....

You've picked a good time to get interested, as one of the best cards is coming the weekend after next. You could go to a bar to see it, pay for it, or use... let us say "other" methods of watching it. Anyways, it's a fantastic card from top to bottom!

The main event is a championship fight between two contenders: Anthony Johnson and Daniel Cormier (Since the champion recently got stripped of his belt). Since you're a boxing fan I'd suggest you watch some of Johnson's striking, it's absolutely vicious. Cormier is a wrestler and tough grinder, but he's not boring. The fight is really a toss-up for me.

The co-main is the Middleweight championship fight between champion Chris Weidman and aging legend Vitor Belfort. Chris shocked the world when he defeated Silva twice, and then solidified his status by defeating Machida. Belfort has been destroying fighters lately, however due to TRT controversy the fight was postponed for like a year. I'm pretty sure Weidman will retain the belt here, but crazier things have happened, (See UFC 173).

Anyways I recognize that, that is a a UFC event and there are cards before then. I know I'll be watching Bellator this Friday, but the card isn't as spectacular; nor is the UFC Fight Night the next day. But since watching the sport and finishing up university is all I do these days, it's my one own escape.

As far as competitors for the UFC goes. I think the recent Reebok deal will hurt them, Bellator has some quality fighters (but Bellator also likes to put on "freak fights" which I watch, but most fans don't like). WSOF and ONE FC also have up-and-comers. But the UFC does definitely possess almost all of the elite fighters.

>ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith has close ties with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

>Before the fight of the century between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, the undefeated boxer gave an exclusive interview with Smith in which the two toured his house and chatted. That close bond means Smith can get rare access to Mayweather, including an interesting text message.

>Stephen A. says @FloydMayweather just sent him a text that he will give @MannyPacquiao another shot in a year. pic.twitter.com/FUo9EEfb4U
> — ESPN First Take (@ESPN_FirstTake) May 5, 2015

Interesting thing here. Manny's claims that he had a shoulder injury were kind of controversial, but apparently he does have to have surgery, which adds quite a bit of legitimacy. In addition, a year is plenty of time to recuperate.

Meanwhile, Mayweather says he's having fight 49 in September. After that, it'd probably be around May before he'd want to have another fight, which means that, if it's actually roughly a year before a rematch between the two, Mayweather would be looking to solidify his victory over Pacquiao by taking him on at full health at the same time as passing Marciano's 49-0 record.

Though I think Mayweather will still have an advantage, a fight with Pacquiao where the latter is at full health, and with the understanding of what he's up against that this fight hopefully gave him, should be significantly more interesting than this one turned out to be.

There will of course be a rematch, too much money not to do it and all Floyd loves is money. Dana White correct when he said the lawsuits would start immediately after the fight with both sides suing each other for more money the lawsuits probably won't end until the rematch(s).

Floyd is likely walking away with $250 million if Yahoo sports is correct and the buys were 5 million.

Oscar de la Hoya vs Julio Cesar Chavez
THIS is a boxing match. THIS is the sort of fight people were expecting.
All that happened in Mayweather v. Pacquiao was Manny looking like he was too scared of taking a punch from Floyd to really come at him as hard as he needed to, and Floyd being Floyd. Dancing around doing fuck all, getting JUST enough punches in at JUST the right time to get points without having to risk anything. Two guys pussyfooting around, playing it safe.

Or maybe it's all rigged and Manny threw the fight.
But that night, Manny looked like a huge pussy and Floyd looked like he didnt even care about the match. Probably because he knew the judges would vote in favor of him in the end.
I always said this fight would only go two ways. Manny knocking out Floyd or Floyd winning via a decision.
Pedro Rizzo - Mon, 04 May 2015 23:43:31 EST ID:tB4g9DZ/ No.55967 Ignore Report Quick Reply

Don't think Manny threw the fight, but he knew he was cooked and took the fight for the money considering he had a torn rotator cuff either before the fight or during it. Supposedly he's getting surgery on his shoulder this week and will be out for 9-12 months. Guess that puts the kibosh on any chances of MayPac II in September.

Seriously though. Don't watch Mayweather ever again (and lucky for you, he's probably retiring after his next fight). All his fights go down the same way. He's too good.

Manny won two, maybe three of the rounds, at least one of them with a fucked up shoulder. Fact is, many boxers wouldn't win a single round against Mayweather. If we could have a rematch with Pacman in full health, I would watch it (though not for $100 again unless the undercard was fucking stacked, as a group of us ended up chipping in to buy the PPV).

Like, her job is, or they think she goes around beating the shit out of people on the street? Like, some random person comes up to Rousey and asks for an autograph, she cackles wildly and puts them in the hospital for four months. Is this the Rousey that Wal-Mart believes in? Or do they just mean that MMA is too violent?

Because I'm pretty sure if Muhammad Ali wrote a memoir, Wal-Mart would be willing to sell it, so even that seems like a stretch.

Maybe it's because she's a woman with a violent profession? Hmm...

Now I want Kankaanpaa to write an autobiography. Or even just a blog with an English translation.

Predictions for this? I know Pac-Man has become more strategic later in his career and less prone to going full-tilt, but I really would love to see Mayweather get knocked out cold. If nothing else, because Pacquiao is a southpaw, just like my sister and me.

Mayweather never gets hit so he will spend 3 rounds blocking maniac Manny flurry of punches then it will be a drawn out fight of points to a split decision because boxing always disappoints now. Personally I'd like to see Mayweather uppercutted straight out of the ring and land on the commentators table KOd to deflate his ego a little to human sized ego but that won't happen.

>Chuck Liddell used to fight entirely by telegraphing wild right hooks and he still won fights.
Roy Nelson does that now. Hell, Chris Weidman was telegraphing ALL his punches when he beat Silva the first time, but once Silva failed to dodge one, it was over. It doesn't matter if you telegraph the punch when you have OHKO power, all it has to do is land once. That said, you do have to be a little more technical in your striking in weight classes below LHW to get KOs, for the most part. Honestly, though, I don't think this argument applies. Punk is a BJJ guy. The one thing that's been surprising me here lately is every fighter's submission defense. There have been several occasions in the past year or so where I've seen what would be considered a fully locked choke or armbar get broken handily and the fight taken back up. Even within the last five years, I feel submission defense has come a VERY long way and now more than ever you're better off prioritizing amateur wrestling and boxing/muay thai over submission grappling (in particular since submission wrestling will get you no points from the judges, no matter how technically you outperform on the ground). Just my opinion, doesn't apply to WMMA, of course.

Roy Nelson is only in UFC because he has inhuman ability to take brutal punishment that would kill any normal man. His fighting skills are awful, but he cannot be KO'd easily, fuck Overeem and JDS spent 3 rounds beating the living shit out of him and it did nothing he was still dangerous until the 3rd round bell rang even after taking multiple kicks to the jaw and ribs over and over. Dude is invicible.

Nobody knows what kind of jaw CM Punk has but he seems pretty tough enough to fight considering Tyron Woodley has been shilling him as a good fighter and that guy won his last fight with a broken foot so if he says your'e good you're prob good.

So it appears that everyone and their mother is putting money on Conor McGregor to win this Saturday, and 95% of any media on this match is focused on the Irishman to the point that they're already prepping for the Aldo Title fight.

So what happens if hell freezes over and Siver pulls off a Buster Douglas moment? Could McGregor's momentum make an immediate recovery? Who would be the next contender for Aldo if not Conor?

I'm 99% sure him taking the belt is a work. I don't think Dana would stand for it, and Jose and his family were sitting with McGregor's girlfriend for his fight against Siver. I'm not so sure McGregor WILL take the belt, but he definitely CAN. Shit, I was convinced there was no way TJ Dillashaw could ever beat Renan Barao, but here we are. All it takes is one bad weight cut to cut a guy's legs off, never mind the possibility of going into the fight with an injury. But Conor's a damn good fighter. From what I've seen, he NEVER tires himself out, and that's what a fighter needs to go five rounds. He doesn't waste a single movement and his striking is very technical for being a knockout artist. He's a rough diamond, but he's still a goddamn diamond, just needs to refine himself outside of the boxing a bit. His takedown defense could be a lot better, but it's not like Jose is a wrestler. I'd love to see him fight Faber if he wins the belt, since Faber is my favorite submission style guy (and maybe Faber will even avoid poking out his eye to get a choke if they do it).

MacGregor is a good fighter. People are selling him a little short because of the nuclear power hype train behind him but on pure skill set he's probably the worst match up for Aldo among featherweight contenders. Hes going to the best offensive striker that Aldo has ever fought and the first guy who will be able to, with his footwork and size, negotiate the range of Aldo. Guys like Edgar, Faber, and Mendes are all fine fighters but they're all shorter guys who have to commit a lot to closing the distance, giving a fast precise guy like Aldo everything he needs to work with as a counter striker. We'll see what happens when Aldo is the one having the close distance.

Yeah he fought taller guys in Hominick and Florian, but Florian was a slow old man who came forward the whole fight and Hominick is fucking Mark Hominick. Note in the Hominick fight Aldo shot a LOT of takedowns (as he did against the lanky Chan Sung Jung). He didn't shoot any against Florian only because Florian spent the whole fight trying to take Aldo down.

MacGregor hasn't been tested on the ground but he's a big strong guy and if he can make Aldo come forward and can defend the TD he's gonna win the attrition battle and, if he's ready for 25 minutes, come on really strong late.

Macgregor is going to hit Aldo, he's going to hurt him, and he's going to take rounds. You have to fave the champion in a 25 minute fight (and thats a long time for MacGregor's lax defense to hold up) but I think people are going to be very surprised how close this fight is.
