Hey guys, what are your opinions on how whether to kick with the shin or with the ball of your foot with roundhouse kicks? I've generally always been the shin kind of guy but I spent a lot of December training with my friend who trains Shotokan and was telling me to land with the ball of my foot when throwing body kicks. I sort of dismissed him because lolshotokan but when I thought I might as well give it a shot during training last week during competition sparring (basically we go hard). I really liked the extra range it was giving me, and it seemed to have more of an oomph in it, I even managed to stop one of the guys after I landed about 4. It also seemed to be harder to grab, which was one of my big weaknesses with body kicks.

The only real thing I'm worried about though is that if catch an elbow or something it will probably break my foot right? It just seems a bit fragile unless I land on the soft parts of the body, although I did catch the forearm a couple of times and didn't really feel much, and it might've affected them.

I'll probably keep going with shin kicks on the thigh because I think the risk of catching a knee or a shin off a check is too great, and it'll hurt me more if I land them, but keep going shin kicks to the body until I feel comfortable in being able to land with the ball of the foot or if I can make openings. Still probably keep going with shin (or instep if I can't reach) for head kicks though.

What do you guys think of the different techniques?

I'm like Bill Wallace, I use the instep because I can't bend my toes back far enough to use the ball. I only had a problem once when I landed with the very end of my foot and hyperextended my ankle.
The only guy I've seen kick with the toes is James Ryan, but I've heard that's a thing in Okinawa-Te.
Maurice Smith has that crazy crocodile kick that drops down on your thigh or neck. Bas Rutten says to kick in straight across the thigh muscle, though, like cutting meat across the muscle fibres.
There's also the switch kick to the inside thigh, and the inverted roundhouse if you're in opposite stances.
One of the best leg kicks I've seen was Stan Longinidis, he broke Dennis Alexio's leg within a few seconds of their fight starting.

Watch Bas Rutten vids he explains everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgrHiWlpRGc

You can torrent that whole combat vid somewhere, he talks exactly how shit can go wrong if certain kicks are checked with a knee and you end up Anderson Silva well-cooked-piece-of-asparagus-limp leg.

More like a piece of fettuccine.
But yeah, low power kicks off the rear leg like that are precipitous. Possibly even cavalier. And they smack of insouciance!

One guy at my gym broke his foot from an elbow check to the foot during light sparring through his leg guards. Again I would like to emphasize the light part.

Kimbo Slice joins Bellator by C-Higgy !lfsExjBfzE - Fri, 16 Jan 2015 16:50:47 EST ID:jsuviyD8 No.55035 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

>“Kimbo Slice” has found a new home. Sources close to the situation have advised Combat Press that Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will join the Bellator roster, with an announcement expected to take place during the Bellator 132 telecast on Jan. 16.

>Ferguson, who shot to fame through a series of street-fight videos that were posted on the internet, made his MMA debut under the EliteXC banner in 2007. The promotion went all in on Ferguson as the face of the company, and it paid off at first with Ferguson reeling off three straight wins. However, it all came crumbling down when Ferguson fought Seth Petruzelli in 2008. Petruzelli knocked out Ferguson in 14 seconds, shattering the fighter’s aura of invincibility.

>After appearing on The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights in 2009 and suffering a TUF exhibition loss to Roy Nelson, Ferguson went 1-1 in the UFC, notching a victory over Houston Alexander and then later suffering a loss at the hands of Matt Mitrione.

>Following his departure from the UFC, Ferguson undertook a career in boxing which saw him win seven fights in a row and maintain an undefeated record. Bellator reportedly pursued Ferguson in 2014, but the two sides were not able to reach a deal at that time.

>An official date and opponent have yet to be determined for Ferguson’s Bellator debut, but a match-up is expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

>Bellator has made waves with some of its recent moves, including the signing of Stephan Bonnar and the pairing of Bonnar with Tito Ortiz to headline Bellator 131 in November. Bellator has also come up in recent rumors surrounding pro-wrestling superstar Brock Lesnar.

To say that this guy is overrated would be a massive understatement.

I watched he last boxing fight a few years ago. He had a lot of trouble putting away a total can. In the end I think he won by some bullshit TKO where the other guy got punched in the liver/rib cage and took a knee but couldn't get back up by the 10 count. Total crap. His 'boxing' too was really underpar as well. Like he should have been in an amature boxing fight and not a professional one.

The thing I find a little iffy is that he was supposedly so annoyed about guys like Rock and Brock coming in and taking top billing from him and other guys who deserved it. Isn't he doing the same thing? I mean not in terms of roster spot but in terms knowing he'll be a PPV main event attraction in all likelihood instead of a fight that actually deserves to main event.

Yeah, what this nigga said. It's easy to see it as him bitching about having to job out to part-timers, but his problem was he was doing the job to part-timers while they were depushing him, not giving him time off to heal, and being promised to be owed favors he never gets to cash in all while shooting down any input he gives them. He's in MMA because he believes (probably wrongly) that he'll get out as much as he put into it. Unfortunately, most guys in MMA do steroids and the training is rough for the camp period, so we'll see how that works out.

I should also add I live above a rowdy jabroni filled sports bar and witness fights all the time. Here's what always happens

  • Double leg takedown followed by sitting on dudes chest and punching his face in until some backup guy kicks the guy in mount in the face, pepper sprays him or the bouncers pull him off.

  • Wild drunken right hand hooks that only land if the other guy is just as drunk.

  • Pepper spraying followed by 5-6 guys beating you within an inch of your life

Never seen any other kind of fight, ever. If you fall down buddy will always kick you in the face guaranteed. If you are unconscious he will do it anyway until some girl screams for him to stop or cops arrest him. Don't get in street fights

Stabbings were the most common until cops started charging people for carrying knives so they changed to pepper spray. Nobody fights "fair" on the street, there's no Marcus of Queensbury gentlemen's rules and everybody fighting usually has some kind of weapon because the kinds of goofs who get into street fights usually carry them at all times.

Does the drug test and the cocaine story for Jones change anyone's opinion of him as an elite fighter? If he snorts coke, what else does he put in his body.

I kind of thought of him as the best fighter in the world, but now he's just kind of a selfish, arrogant out of control maniac.

He's got good reach and striking creativity. Is his legacy tarnished? What will happen to the title?

You should read your own link, they denied he used blow and instead "In the documentary, Assault in the Ring, Resto asserted that Lewis used to crush antihistamine pills and dissolve them in his water to expand his lung capacity in later rounds. "

Also he's out of competition during the blow test.
Also nobody gains any advantage to being on blow, more like they will tire out and crash after 10 minutes.

I'm convinced Jones is a cokehead, so his drug abuse isn't a publicity stunt. I wouldn't put it past Dana and the Fertittas to convince Jones to do his whole announcement and check-into rehab as a PR move to help his and the UFC's brand with the intention to use it as a storyline to promote his next fight, though.

Herrig sucks but she has a massive experience advantage, and other than being tenacious as fuck, Paige didn't show the kind of ability in her last fight that would give me a lot of confidence in this fight. Stylistically this is a decent fight for Paige as a top grappler would dominate her right now but experience is huge.

Rooting for The Hotgun. but I'd favor Herrig.

Hahaha from an interview with VanZant

>“I always had on the back of my mind that me and Felice would fight, because we’re the hot girls in the sport. So I kind of got myself ready for that.”

>“She’s been around for a long time, and she’s been somewhat of a veteran in the sport. Just to be fighting her, and to be at her level in as honor. I looked up to her when I first started the sport. She was someone who I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Now to be on the same playing field and the same level as her, it’s exciting. I’m really excited about this fight.”

>“I am very comfortable with that. A lot of people say I’m very young for all of this to be happening, but I’ve kind of always been ahead of my age. This is everything I knew I would be doing eventually in my life. I’m happy that it’s happening now.”
