Where does the sitcom stand in 2018? Decades past had their M.A.S.H., All in the Family, Cheers, Seinfeld, etc. The decade is almost over and yet, which sitcom will speak for the era? We're not here to select a winner but instead nominate that which will stand for the time period and for adding something to the genre. As long as the pilot/first episode air date is after Jan 1st, 2010 it's good to go.

Feel free to discuss sitcoms of any time period in this thread.

What even is the definition of a situational comedy these days?

Like is Always Sunny a sitcom? Google says it is. If so thats got my vote, but that started in 2005.

I think the 21st century saw the death of family friendly sitcoms like the stuff mentioned in OPs title, as their formula got tired and repetitive as fuck

>My vote would go to Bobs Burgers.
>Y'all know I'm right.

Indeed you are sir, indeed you are. Bobs Burgers has some serious fans too. They sold out their "live reading" tour last year very handily. Shit, even my wife likes Bob's Burgers. And she hates all animated shows. Plus, it has a very particular feel to it that sets it apart from shows even like South Park or The Simpsons. Oddly enough, it feels more like Bojack than anything else. Or vice-versa. Except Bojack is way sadder than even a Teddy heavy episode....

>>393355
Again, Blackish is firing on all cylinders too. Right there is your ABC family sitcom 800lb gorilla in the room. Between those two shows you have some serious numbers, and few challengers to the throne. Nobody wants to take a shot in this fractured a market.

Catch me up. I’ve only watched these last few episodes.
What are your thoughts on the series compared to dragon ball, & DBZ?
I always figured there were aspects based upon spiritual concepts of western cultures like chakras and auric fields but it seems now they’ve fully adopted that idea. Though I’m not a fan of the new-school I do approve of that feature.

The one thing that might annoy some viewers (not myself) is the first few episodes are a little slow. The story is done in Stephen King style, where first they elaborately build up this small town and the locals before plunging it into Hell. I recall my fav horror anime of all time, Monster, also had a slow start, but that was also 70+ eps, this is only 24 including the 2 OVA eps (which I suggest watching along with the series in their place of the plot rather than after you finish the main series)

finished fate apocrypha

The main character feels like a side character. The strange thing is what could have been a better main character is right there in the story all along.

Fate Apo could have been better, I feel, if the love interest was written as the main, while the main was written as the love interest. The fight, the symbolism, and the ideological argument between the two Ruler-class Saints could then get better focus. Sieg would then not need so much power boosts in such a short time out of nowhere in order to take on Shirou. Sieg transforming into a dragon and flying away with the Grail forever could then be rewritten to be much more dramatic, such as having Sieg fly away while Jeanne is still busy fighting Shirou, since Sieg won't be the one fighting Shirou.

I mean it's not the first webseries to become a TV series but it was basically a two person operation and costing less than $1000 to make each episode. It's been a huge success I'd say.

Great! Although it's already confusing enough to watch the existing episodes in any semblance of order thanks to various sites listing the web series and TV series both as s1 or one as s2 and it just being a mess.

Movie would have been so much better without them and without the "villain". They felt like a reminder "hey, don't forget this is actually an X-Men movie". They serve no purpose, it differs from the comics but you don't need any Mutant other than "Weapon X" for a killing machine. That and the movie would have felt more isolated without them, I feel the director was afraid to make the movie feel too lonely. Folks defend the villain because "muh symbolism" but it was trash. Laura with the trigger scent would have served the same purpose and would have been more dramatic. I liked the interpretation of Laura but the lack of trigger scent was sort of baffling to me.

>Like, they turned Captain America black and his first mission was to stop Texans from messing with Mexicans who were crossing the border

Okay, first of all they didn't "turn Captain America black" you dipshit. Captain America is a mantle that has been taken up by many people over the decades. Only no one gave a shit until it was taken up by a black guy who's one of Steve Rogers' closest and oldest allies and all these dipshit right wing latent racist edgelord collectively shat a brick over it. Steve Rogers still exists and is still doing his thing.

Secondly, his first mission wasn't to "stop Texans from messing with Mexicans." Besides the fact that I'm pretty sure that wasn't his first mission, he was taking down a far right wing exteemist, white supremacist, hyper-nationalist, hyper-nativist terrorist cell who were indiscriminately terrorizing and murdering any brown people whether they were natural born citizens, legal immigrants, or illegal immigrants because they assumed all to be illegal. And the story lasted literally one issue. It was just some goddamn filler, featuring Cap doing, you know, the usual sort of thing Captain America does ALL THE FUCKING TIME?!? It's called taking inspiration from real world events for your stories, something that everybody, especially Marvel, have been doing FOR FUCKING EVER and no one gave a shit about until a bunch of the aforementioned shithead edgelords collectively shat yet another brick.

It is so painfully, ridiculously, stupidly obvious that you don't read ANY of these comics you're bitching about. Not one freaking issue. Like so many people, you just see sensationalist articles about certain things going on in the Marvel and DC universe and read bullshit hyper-sensationalized internet rants in the comments or on image boards by alarmist dorks who also have not read any of the stories they're constantly pissing and moaning about that are always filled with speculation, assumptions, fundamental misunderstandings, lack of understanding about the context behind the stories, and misinformation. "Hurr he wasn't truned black, it was a new black person taking the mantle" i fucking realize this, idiot, dont spaz about figures of speech. God, this post is sad. It was the first issue of Nick Spencer's run, hence it feeling like a 1st mission. I was excited for Black Cap when Rick Remender was supposed to be the permanent writer, but then he left Marvel and the character went full SJW. You can disagree with me about the comics being good or not, but frig off if you're acting like I don't read comics, i'm a nerdy piece of shit.

Well the run before that was fucking epic and had nothing to do with American politics. Rick Remender had just done the epic Captain America In Dimension Z arc where Steve spent decades raising a semi-evil son of one of his greatest enemies only to suffer brutal betrayal. I was hoping he would give Falcon Cap a similarly huge arc with major character development. Then they replaced him with the cringiest writer in the Marvel lot. I'll give you that the character has a history of runs like this, so I shouldn't be that surprised.

>only certain kinds of people on certain kinds of soapboxes that make you mad.
I don't even mind the soapbox at all if it is handled well. The muslim teenage Ms Marvel is an example of a good one. Recent Captain America IMO is the example of the shitty side.

In Bruges is a dark satire semi-comedy film that could be possibly considered social commentary on specific things:
  • The way that society thinks that men are supposed to treat children, and how men are expected to behave with respect to families in general
  • What people's lives are like living in relative social isolation
  • Social norms around drug use
  • Social norms concerning midgets and hookers

I dont't think its accurate to describe a film as a "social commentary" unless that is directly what it set itself out to do. I don't see that with In Bruges (which yeah is a great film regardless) but calling it a social commentary other than a "dark comedy" is simply innaccurate. Maybe there are pieces of social commentary there but the film itself isn't a social commentary piece like American Psycho or even The Lobster were.

I think it is the fan base around it that makes it seem much worse than it is. Their fan base is horrible but the show itself really isn't that bad.

And yes, a lot of the CW stuff is geared towards teenagers/20 somethings especially women but that isn't the case for all of it and some of the shows are pretty decent. Not great but good for what is out there these days.

I don't see how the show is geared towards women aside from having attractive male leads. There isn't much romance, will they wont they bullshit, sex, or anything like that and certainly not as much as something like Grimm which I fell doesn't have the same stigma.

Maybe that is just my take as a male and someone who just watches the show, doesn't hang out in any of the fan communities which are pretty much just fueled by tumblr tier women, and doesn't really discuss it at all.

Its mostly just a couple bros killing monsters.

I'd say it's not necessarily geared specifically toward women, but it's definitely strongly got the female audience in mind, which is why it has a huge female following.
The two leads are essentially male models, and every women they run into falls in love with one of them essentially. Parts of it are made for women to self insert.

Watching the Resident Evil movies on IFC. Saw the first one back when it came out and enjoyed it. Not as great as the Romero script sounded, but pretty decent for a video game adaptation. The second one, Apocalypse, is terrible, though. Saw it in the theater with friends and hated it. Watched it again just now and it's still bad, but I'm kind of apathetic to its suckiness. Watching the third one now, Extinction, and it's pretty boring. I can't believe they got Russell Mulcahy (the Highlander guy) to direct it. How bizarre. Also for some reason IFC showed the 5th one but not the 4th one, so I guess I'll have to check if that one's streaming anywhere. This series is pretty crappy but I feel inclined to finish watching it so at least I know it's shit for certain.

Man, I don't think that you should call people bitches, but that is such a flawed argument. Not only do you immediately assume that he would think like that because he's a man and every man is super appreciative of aggressive behavior, but it's like you assume that because I have a cock I respect the way for example Donald Trump behaves in press.

I mean, do you really believe that? You shouldn't act like a baby if you're a man or a woman, and especially not when you're supposed to talk about important shit. If you feel like she started the e-mail on a adult and grown-up note, I'd argue that you have to take a second look. It's great that you feel like you're on the right side of history and that you appreciate the women rights movement, but goddamn if you can't see why behavior like this diminish her legitimacy then I don't know what you tell you.

It isn't that I don't sympathize to a certain degree BY THE WAY.

lol, i rarely go on /b/. it's not even because i dislike it either. every time i happen to be on there, i've never seen anything that suggests that everyone is a white knight. it just disgusts me when guys act like that. like, why put yourself in such a feminine position? half the people that act like that just have low self esteem issues and want to get laid.

>>393305

to me, the word "bitch" is literally the same thing as calling a guy an asshole. granted, i won't use that word if i don't understand someone or think they're acting dumb. was katie a bitch for resorting to ad hominem in that e-mail? absolutely. ashleigh tried to explain to her that aziz shouldn't lose his career over a bad date. aziz is no ladies man, but what happened to grace was completely on her. katie really should have just tried tor reach out to ashleigh, and have a fucking conversation if she didn't like what she said. i'm sure it would have been possible since katie officially has a platform to speak on, which she doesn't deserve.

Through 420chan? A pseudonymous website frequented overwhelmingly by other dudes where you get instabanned if you post any personal contact information? Out of all the websites out there, that's the one they chose to use as a medium for hooking up with girls?

Does that really seem more likely to you than that they genuinely hold different beliefs than you do? Really?

I think you misunderstood what I said. I was referring to men who act like WK’s IRL. I wasn’t saying people here act like WK’s in hopes of a hookup.

If ya’ll are gonna spaz like this, I might as well leave the conversation to you guys. It doesn’t feel serious anymore lol.

Jesus, you just reminded me about how there was supposed to be a Goonies 2 in the works about a decade ago.

>>393304

This is a seriously underrated movie. It got unfairly lumped into the late 90's/early 2000's "shitty MTV teen movie" pile. I'm not really sure what a sequel would be about, though. I guess a different cast using a similar storytelling concept might be cool if it wasn't a retread.

Yep! 7-10! Its to do with their partnership, why would you watch it on the telly every week when you can just watch all of them on amazon and binge watch?

I wish they would tell us what short story the episode is based on at some point in the credits.

Seems like the episodes i got were out of order, so i watched The Father Thing i dunno i liked it i guess, the mix of stranger things and invasion of the body snatchers is a bit eh, i would have liked them to explore the alien race a little more, i feel like its commenting politically with the whole #resist hashtag being a real hashtag which is anti-trump.

I love how he rocks up home, covered in blood and his mums like "wheres your dad" and hes like "i took care of it" implying that you know he fucking killed him when his mum didnt know he was an alien.

6/10 do, the titles of the episodes are the same as the short stories. Of the other four:
Crazy Diamond is Sales Pitch
Real Life is Exhibit Piece
Kill All Others is The Hanging Stranger
Safe and Sound is Foster, You're Dead!

Not enjoying Father Thing. I read it when I was really young and the "aliens" were creepy insects. And all that was left of the people who'd been eaten was a roll of dried up skin like parchment. It was camper and creepier than this by far.
