Stalingrad (1993). It's so great because there's no heroism, everybody is just miserable all the time and not even winning a fight cheers them up.

IMO One of the most underrated series ever. Incredibly written, well acted, and interesting characters and plot lines. The best way i could describe it is something like Twin Peaks meets The Big Lebowski but also with brutal social commentary on late stage Capitalism and the search for meaning in a 21st Century secular world thrown in the mix for good measure. Such a shame that AMC cancelled it after only two seasons (and a cliff hanger) because of low-ratings. This show definitely is already gaining a cult following pretty quickly. Has anyone else seen it and what was your impression?

TYT is kind of bad, but they never claimed that one of the candidates running for gov't was a literal, physical demon from hell.

Alex Jones wasn't terrible until Obama happened and the model he used to explain the unchanging wars abroad, demolishing conditions at home, and surveillance everywhere were insane right-wing conspiracies instead of putting Obama in the same neoliberal imperialist box as Bush and Clinton.

Just finished season 4 of Shameless. I've really come around on the Maguires. I was sorta annoyed when they were taking up a lot of the episodes, but Paddy and Mimi work so well together. I wouldn't mind at this point if they were the main focus over the Gallagher's tbh.

I've been watching The Wire since late 00s, occasionally rewatching some episode or whole season and sometimes the whole thing, rewatched it with various different people in my life. Most I've rewatched 2x11 "Bad Dreams", the whole season 2 ending just is my favorite bit of TV probably.

The show paints a very realistic mileu but really the prose is just too good to be real, reality is a bit more stupid than David Simon's depiction of it. Still, phrases from the show have echoed in my head for decades as I've watched my life go through similar scenes, workplaces having similar dynamics, being caught in the drug game with similar characters and events happening.
It takes IMHO a rewatch or two to really start appreciating the nuances of passion that went into the show, for me it's like a little 21st century bible that isn't just fully a fictional piece of entertainment but a kind of collective story of us.

It is a truly unique TV show, there is nothing out there that compares, the only thing I would compare it to is Twin Peaks, you might think this a weird comparison but it makes sense if you understand the background behind these two shows and their cultural context. You can watch it as a simple cop drama but there is true passion that went into it and it changed the playing field of television that came afterwards. It was personal for the creators and they were in luck to be given free hands to create and express, this kind of thing is unlikely to happen twice so I don't think there will ever be a continuation of The Wire. You have to compare it to the kind of passion projects that happen mostly by accident and are borderline insanity.

It doesn't even take too much focus to really taste the rage of the creators as much of the double-meaning and metaphor in nearly every scene is IMHO kind of on your nose once you take notice of it. It's a 60 episode sociopolitical rant by a journalist and a city police, which is why the last episode is -30- meaning the end of an article, but the beauty is that you can also just enjoy the entertaining drama of it with really good writing and characters. I don't think it's any fluke that Simon received the McArthur genius grant for it.

>I think its cool what Pixar is trying to pull, but its not going to get its message across.

The key point is that it's a Pixar film and people will take away from it any message that it's trying to convey no matter how simple or shallow they portray it to be whether it's done through talking toys, talking cars, talking bugs, talking rats, an old man, feelings inside someone's head, and vice versa. I do agree with you about white people taking jazz away from black culture as if it were its own making and that's been going on forever especially in music like rock n' roll.

>>416990
I didn't realize explaining how jazz plays a role in Soul, referencing why Pixar made the decision to incorporate it into the film, and comparing it to Coco would be seen as narcissistic but to each of their own I suppose.

>THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It's the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formiddable Vought backing.

I typically hate cap shut, but this is really good. Check it if get the chance.

It's kind of a weird question. Capeshit is just a troll word people use to get a rise out of people who enjoy well crafted yet generic and superficial movies/shows with a particular theme.

Maybe to some people (like OP) think this show isn't capeshit to them because it deconstructs the theme and offers something different which shows them that the theme of superheroes isn't always a massive cash grab that panders to lowest common denominator.

They're not that well crafted.

You can see a decline in composition and art style in Marvel and it's pretty consistent.

It's not just Black Panther looking like shit. They're rushing the CG on these movies more and more. The graphics are fine but the animation and camera direction in those scenes is going to absolute shit.
