The Christmas Special is kind of like the soft premiere for the new series so I guess a new thread is in order since the old one appears to be gone now.

Anyone watch the Christmas Special? I thought it was incredibly dumb but to its credit it embraced its dumb-ness to decent comedic effect. I'm not a fan of the hairless humpty dumpty guy, though. Not really jazzed about him being brought back. The villains of the episode seemed pretty weak and stupid, too. More so than usual Christmas Special villains. My favorite part was when The Doctor was talking to the lady and said "There are some situations that are just too stupid to be allowed to continue", made me laugh out loud. After that I embraced the stupidity of the episode and was able to enjoy it proper.

Sucks we have to wait another 4 months for the premiere, but the preview at the end of tonight's episode was nice. I can't shake how the new companion looks like Dr. Frank-N-Furter, but I'm hoping she grows on me and turns out to be a good companion.

>because that means no annoying romantic subplot

Somehow I doubt they're going to pass up the opportunity to televise the intricacies of an annoying romantic lesbian subplot. Or at least genderswap the Doctor in one episode so he can make an awkward pass at it.

Honestly, I'll watch this season, but as much as I like Twelve at his best moments, I'm not excited about anything until Chibnall takes over.

At first I was disappointed about Capaldi leaving at the end of the season, but honestly, I'm looking forward to a chance at a big shift, which would've been harder to pull off if he'd been stuck with the same Doctor.

Just hope the next one isn't a Tennant-clone, as much as I loved Ten.

Shit episode but the trailer for the rest of the season had me hype the fuck out of my brain. I miss the RTD era and bringing back John Simms as the fucking Master is an epic way to end the Moffat era. First time in a long time where I give a fuck about how the season goes.

I'm loving this season so far, though my hopes weren't necessarily high after the last two and the hiatus.

Thought I'd hate the new companion, but she's actually pretty great. I like her dynamic with the Doctor, it's refreshing after the past "SuperDuperTotallyImportantJustBelieveMeI'mMoffat" companions. They're banter back and forth is great and I like how she's constantly questioning everything.

And it's nice to see Capaldi finally get to shine as the 12th Doctor. The past two seasons had their good moments, but it still felt like they never knew in what direction to take him. It finally feels like he and the writers have finally settled into the role. Shame it's his last season.

Absolutely despised Nardole in the previous Christmas specials, but ever since 'The Pilot' I've been pleasantly surprised every time he's shown up. I hope we get a few episodes with him actually joining in on the adventures before the end of the season.

This season's big arc teases are..."there." I'm interested, but not really. I've been burned too many times by Moffat with his great set ups and horrendous pay offs. If it turns out good, I'll be pleasantly surprised. But really, I'm just in it for the one offs this season.

Also, If anyone's interested in Classic Doctor Who a new streaming service just launched called Britbox. It's interface kinda sucks and you're kinda limited on what devices you can stream it on right now, but it's got pretty much all the Classic episodes that are available in as good of quality you can find. It's better than digging through DailyMotion at least.

I hate the season, the companion and Capaldi are the only redeeming factor. The newest ep was the worst yet. Rehashed the old "Amy saves a whale" episode. The writing is just atrocious. Old Who, every filler episode still managed to blow my mind. These episodes are so sub-standard with literally no thought put into the concepts. All I care about is seeing who is in the Vault, although based on the previews they showed after ep1, it's pretty obviously one of the two Masters. Or who knows, maybe its a future Doctor who came back and warned Capaldi not to leave Earth or his future would come to pass.

When SMith was the Doctor, the writers delivered good episodes all season (minus the final Pond episodes). With Capaldi, his performances are better than SMith but when the episodes arent giving major canon, they are straight bad.

What say you /mtv/? Do you like this new retconned origin of the force? It's certainly better than midichlorians.

Agreed whole-heartedly. Star Wars isn't meant to be technical, which is why they stay away from the technobabble as much as possible. I actually said earlier in the thread that I thought it was good that they're retconing mitichlorians, but actually you are right. Leaving it vague is the way to go. I mean, I do think it's a good idea to change the canon, because mitichlorians are retarded, but if they do, they need to make it quick, vague, and not spend much time on it. Though even if they did that, it's gonna pull a lot of focus to something that is inevitably gonna sound really stupid.

What's some of your favourite mind-fuck horror scenes, that rely on little/no violence but sheer defeat of will, etc

I loved 'Exorcist III' for this scene alone:

"Found footage" is a bit cheap in the horror genre but I liked the hide-n-seek ending of 'Rec'

What say you? Pic also related. Very defeated by that scene

I'll throw in "The Woman in Black." Saw it with some friends in theaters on a whim, stars Daniel Radcliff, but I remember thinking that film had such killer sound design in theaters. Like it's a B movie, but that sound/ suspense is incredible.

I'm a fucking filthy hipster so I guess I'll rep "It Follows" for having a terrifying premise that doesn't rely at all on violence. The scene where the super tall dude comes into her room was so fucking creepy.

Then we've got The Shining that is so full of dread throughout, particularly the scene in room whatever with the old woman and that rabbit and guy glimpsed through the doorway...

I don't know many but here are a few

Films by Kusturica (Underground, Time of gypsy, black cat white cat)
Papusza (about a romani poet woman)
Snatch? I dunno how much of a real representation that is, but that it does depict Roma people

This contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film Psycho has provided fans with an intimate look into the unraveling of Norman Bates’ psyche throughout his teenage years. Fans watched as Norman’s dangerous transformation came full circle when he methodically murdered his beloved mother, Norma, in the final gut-wrenching episodes of season four. Season five of “Bates Motel” picks up almost two years later and finds Norman (Freddie Highmore), a grown man now, living a double life. Publicly he’s a happy and well-adjusted member of the White Pine Bay community, but at home Norman struggles; his violent blackouts continue to increase as ‘Mother’ (Vera Farmiga) threatens to take over his mind completely. Meanwhile, Dylan Massett (Max Thierot) and Emma Decody (Olivia Cooke), since leaving White Pine Bay, have been living their lives blissfully unaware of Norma’s death and Norman’s full on descent into psychosis. Unfortunately, for them, they will soon find themselves drawn back into Norman’s insanity, while a vengeful Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell), who is currently incarcerated for a perjury, hungers for a chance to destroy his stepson and avenge the murder of his one true love, Norma Bates.

The final season premieres tonight at 10pm EST on A&E

Well, it all came to an end tonight. I was right here on /mtv/ after the pilot premiered, and here I am 5 years later for the final episode.

My relationship with the show has been tumultuous. That first season blew me away — the characters and acting, the boldness of the story with a perfectly accented humor ... the beautiful, creative cinematography, coupled with a soundtrack perfectly matched to the intrigue and eerieness of Hitchcock's original.

The show unfortunately lost focus in Season 2 and 3. From what I understand, 5 seasons was always the plan, but I look at a lot of the filler from these two seasons and wonder if that was truly the case. The best parts of S1 were still there, just too few and far between.

But Season 4, I think they opened their ears, because we saw a return to form that carried over to this final season. I don't agree with some of the decisions they made for the story, but I respect the desire to pave new ground, and I'm nonetheless happy with how everything turned out in the end.

By failing to kill Norman, Romero preserved the decency so many people looked up to him for. By killing Norman, Dylan gave Norman exactly what he wanted at the end of S4, becoming so lost inside himself that he was no longer able to carry it out. In a strange way, most everyone had a happy ending, as much as they could.

So, goodbye Bates Motel. It's been an pleasure; a series I'll always consider among my favorites. I'm listening to the soundtrack right now, kind of making me tear up a little. Can't wait to talk about the show tomorrow with my own Mother.

Yeah, it was a happy ending-ish. I was hoping for the movie ending so maybe they could do a sequel mini-series someday but this was good. Major Peter Pan / Michael jackson vibes.

I think Dylan is a scumbag though. Dude doesnt even know his dad is dead by Normans hand because he is such a shithead that he cut his dad out of his life over nothing. How come they never found that body, anyways? ALso Emma is all on a high horse like 'dont defend the guy who killed my mom" as if Dylan didnt also just learn his own mom was killed by the same serial killer. Also, not to nitpick but IRL dylan would go to jail for what he did. He legally should have sent in the cops, you arent allowed to go around giving Of Mice And Men style mercy killings you know.

My biggest disappointment is the lack of "She wouldn't even harm a fly." it's my favorite quote from the movie and I was just hanging on it to be said the entire finale. Shame they never delivered, but they did have an Easter egg in the form of Jiao. Remember the Asian sex slave from the first season that the cop presumably killed? She was the realtor selling the Bates Motel at the end, lol.

And yeah, lots of unresolved shit: They never found Caleb, Bradley, or Dr Edward's bodies? C'mon man. Tho I guess it really doesn't matter. I was just expecting the evidence against Norman to all come up. We never got an answer for that big ass hole that was supposed to be a swimming pool — I thought that's where Emma's mom would've been found.

I think Emma was actually justified, and by the end she redeemed herself by acknowledging that it wasn't Norman who actually committed the acts, it was "Mother". Bittersweet.

And regarding Dylan, all he needs to do it point at the knife stuck in the door... It's got Norman's prints all over it, and it's not like Norman wasn't the type to kill people. I think Dylan could easily just claim self-defense... He'd have to be pretty elaborate for why he went there in the first place.

I think the bigger plot hole is why there were no police there to begin with. They knew Norman and Romero were on the loose, and I think it'd make sense for some police officer to have been on lookout duty...

This show has always had these kinds of problems tho, and I've just got nothing but love now that it's over. It wasn't the best it could've been, but the general direction felt right.

One things for sure, I'm gonna miss seeing Vera Farmiga. The greatest MILF of all time. Those flashback scenes from S1 made me falling in love all over again.

Surprised this movie isn't on the first 3 pages. Pretty fucking creepy, it's a horror movie, but now they're calling it a thriller. I'd say it kind of treads the line, though there are some definite horror tropes.

Really great flick showcasing the soft racism of white America, as opposed to the extreme racism that is often encountered in movies. It has a 99% on RT and had 100% when I looked yesterday. And it is that good.

Jordan Peele wrote and directed it. So it's pretty funny too.

Totally, good point. The scene right after it was creepy too where they juxtapose Lisa being all nice and reassuring (even tho she'll later betray him) with shots of the white dudes bidding on Chris.

I also thought Rod was a smart character in the sense that he was essentially the black stereotype of yelling at a screen during a horror movie like at the end when he saves Chris he's like "I told you not to go into that house" while also being the most "woke" character and right about everything the entire time.

I saw it tonight and man that was a really creepy yet awesome film. I thought the way that they addressed the racism especially the scenes at the party and just the whole stereotype of blacks being physically superior and stuff. Didn't expect it to get crazy with the hypnosis and brain swapping shit. And Rod was such a great comic relief for the film, I was dying at some of his one liners and reactions like when he was listening Rose explain what happened with Chris and then saying how much she actually liked Rod.

And the ending itself was a nice surprise even as the original ending was supposed to be Chris being arrested by police for the murder of Rose and her family, and intended the scene as a reflection of the realities of racism.

Watched this last night. As a horror, it wasn't scary. It's only a good scary movie if you dont watch much horror and also were able to avoid all spoilers. I'd compare it more to films like Stepford Wives. If Stepford Wives is a great feminist thriller, maybe this is the black people version of that. I know this thread has gotten a bit /[pol/ and i have no issues with the films message, but the movie ran a little long and needed some more creepy scenes rather than what we were given.

Ya, I liked that movie to and her performance but I still thought it was sort of "April" just more dramatic. Legion was sort of a mind fuck tho, not just the show but her performance. She's never really showed that much charisma or emotion in anything she's in until this show where she really does steal the show IMO. It was nice to get a good Marvel villain as it's generally the weakest part of anything MCU or Marvel related on screen. David Tennant, Vincent D'Onofrio and now Aubrey Plaza were the only villain performances worth while.

and that fucking dance number!

As the OP, I can comfortably say, I am fully expecting for Jimmy to eventually kill that scumbag fuckface Chuck. I think that will be what pushes Jimmy into the criminal underworld. I also expect this show to unfortunately go for maybe 5 seasons tops. This season has started off great.

The Expanse is back tonight on Syfy with a 2-episode premiere. Prepare for political intrigue, complex plots, and awesomely beautiful space battles as tensions heat up between Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt mining colonies and the crew of the Rocinante has to pick a side.

Crazy finale. Good shit.
It was a great way to finish up some stuff, leave some other things open, and start new arcs.
I love the idea that Johnson has the protomolecule now. He's a badass, and I guess it's in better hands with him than that other OPA douche. Plus I just like his acting.
I don't like that they left the fate of Avasarala, her spy friend and Bobbie Draper open, but I have a very strong feeling that at least Bobbie will make it, and probably Avasarala.
The scene where the protomolecule on Venus disassembled the Earth research ship was pretty awesome. Lol imagine what was going through their minds in their last moments.
Already excited for next season. I grabbed the first book of the series recently, so that's something to tide me over until then.

Wrapped things up fairly neatly while dropping some "OH FUCK NOW WHAT" moments. Looking forward to next season

Yeah I'm also glad it was Fred who got the molecule. The build up behind the coup and Anderson fucking off with a bunch of nukes had me thinking HE would get it.

As for the protomolecule on Venus, it seems that sending ships there fueled the fire so to speak. If it feeds on radiation and becomes more complex by absorbing life, Venus is a hotbox of thermal radiation and those ships are a welcoming gift lol.

Shit's getting wild

I've been searching for this incredibly scarce Italian 1967 film on DVD forever with English subtitles in blu-ray format but it literally doesn't exist despite there being mentions of it on some forums. Unfortunately unlike La Dolce Vita it hasn't been reproduced even in it's original format so also tracking down the low quality copy is impossible in Australia.

Please fellow cinephiles inform of me a place that one might be able to obtain or view this hidden gem. Also feel free to discuss similar films in this thread :)
