I'm convinced that Doc Hammer just doesn't enjoy doing Venture Bros anymore. I think he was all in when he started but after a while he realizes how much work it is he'd rather be living his life and doing other shit. And maybe his head just isn't in the same place it was when they started.
Can't say I blame him for it though. He's a very multi-faceted person.

With all the content on other networks I'm surprised any one watches broadcast network sitcoms anymore. Orville, big bang theory, 2broke girls, superior donuts, superstore, kevin can wait, Kevin saves the world, Kevin takes a shit... Etc. They're all mediocre half baked ideas that will never be remebered

I mainly just watch comedies on Fox besides The Orville like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mick and The Last Man on Earth (need to catch up on the latest season). No comedies on ABC and CBS interest me and while there are some on NBC that do interest me, I haven't gotten around to them.

This thread is a collection of good movies to watch any day of the year! I will post one film every 24 hours or so.

Movie of the Day:
>Hausu (1977)
A Japanese horror comedy film directed and produced by Nobuhiko Obayashi. It stars mostly amateur actors. The film follows a schoolgirl traveling with her six classmates to her ailing aunt's country home, where they come face to face with supernatural events as the girls are, one by one, devoured by the home.

It's no secret that hollywood is out of ideas for movies, what are some great stories from literature that you think should be adapted to the screen?

  1. Hyperion - Dan Simmons: This book has everything; FTL travel, time travel, malicious AI, Aliens and compelling characters. Due to the fractured story telling in the first book and the protracted narrative, this would probably have to be done as a tv series. If successful, the sequels are just as compelling.

2. Forever War - Joe Haldeman: I truly can't believe that this one hasn't been made into some kind of film adaptation already. Of all the stories on this list, I feel like this one needs the least amount of work story wise to translate to the screen. The story is tight enough story that it could easily be written into a feature film.

3. Snow Crash/Seven Eves/Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson: Pretty much anything by Neal Stephenson deserves an adaptation, but these 3 in particular have always struck me as the most cinematic in his oeuvre. Snow Crash is basically just a better version of the movie Ready Player One, that's coming out later this year. The premise for Seven Eves is that the moon blows up for no reason, it got a luke warm reception, but it's one of my very favorite books and I believe it would translate well to the big screen. Cryptonomicon follows 2 narratives one begginning in WWII and one in the modern world, following lost german submarines, crazy marines and crazier treasure hunters, with a sprinkle of geopolitics and intrigue. Any of them would make for an excellent blockbuster.

4. The Stars are Legion -Kameron Hurley: This 2017 book is enigmatic, bold and really sticky, for real, I felt like I needed to take a shower after I read this book... in a good way. The story chronicles the lives of a female-only, alien race living on multi-layered, hostile, living planets. The set-pieces in this book alone would be amazing to see translated onto the screen.

5. Wild Cards series - J.R.R Martin: OG martin fans know about the amazing anthology series he edited. In an alternate history where an alien ship crash lands on earth shortly after WWII, it releases a virus that causes people all over the world to change. Some b…

Ok so this happened in late 2017, there was a black sitcom family show on cable TV and I never figured out the name of the show but here is the catch..as I entered the room where the show was playing, this African family was all lined up side by side across the screen (maybe not the whole family, not sure) and there was a female on the very right edge of the screen who out of no where stood there-head tilted back as if looking at the sky BUT her mouth was agar in a very disturbing way. Trust me it did not look human......she stood there for maybe less than 3 or 4 seconds and it was NOT scripted, it was one of those things you don't notice unless you are trying to see the bigger picture of what you are looking at and by that I mean every single thing else happening in that time span of 3 or 4 seconds was entirely normal and genuine but this very disturbing image of this female with her mouth open as far as possible made it look like she could eat a baseball or something a bit bigger. I have been searching but have no idea how to find this specific episode or even the name of the show or actors. I'm telling you this stuff is real and right infront of you, please don't judge me, just help me find an answer or proof or something....please guys I will be checking in here on /mtv everyday in hopes that someone can explain this

Since Star Wars is becoming popular again, I just want to say I don't understand it. I watched the movie with the gold guy and RD2 walking around a ship as a kid and I thought the film was boring. Decades later, I read articles saying "Oh, if you don't like Star Wars you're a piece of shit and no one likes you and you're just jealous of George Lucas," but all I thought to myself as a kid is "Wow, this is flippin' stupid. I rather watch karate moofies."
So I read a bunch of posts on the internet as to why other people like it (it has a timeless story, it has a badass female lead, it has good video gayems [lol], it's about friendship and family, i liek rpgs and space) and I think to myself, "Are you fucking kidding me? Star Wars is the dullest looking movie I've ever seen. Greyscale 50s movies have more color than this trash. Fuckin' home made VHS movies had more pizzazz."
Anyways, what I'm wondering now is this: Was Star Wars only popular because it was the only kids/family friendly movie to come out during its time? Personally, I tend towards movies about criminals doing crime-y stuff in the modern era but slightly futuristic but not too futuristic so I don't think I was ever in SW's intended audience bracket.

I haven't seen The Last Jedi yet but TFA was just meh. It was beautiful but the story was quite lame and rehashed. Not creative at all and I don't really like the characters at all. Kylo Ren is not a good villain, and the protagonists are meh at best.
It's a pretty fun watch, but it's nothing to write home about. I did enjoy Rogue One though.
Basically they're a lot like the original series, rehashed but with characters that aren't as good.

Last Jedi is long as shit... I almost fell asleep towards the end. I thought the movie was about to end like 5 times. I thought it was a decent movie compared to episode 1 and 2 but not worth seeing in theatres. Wait for it to be free on demand if you still have cable.

Also, kylo ren or Ben solo or whatever the fuck is basically Anakin in episode 3 but even more bitch made with no reason to be. He has 2 healthy loving parents unlike Anakin who was a slave, had no father, was taken from his mother at age 6, and then saw her murdered.

last jedi = meh
Ben solo = huge faggot

The reason star wars is so popular is because of how it uses story tropes, explicit good vs explicit evil, young guy who thinks hes nothing finds out hes super important and has special abilities nobody else has. Has a princess that needs saving. Has rag tag general bad guy who is tricked into doing good because he is promimsed a huge payday at the end.

Star wars basically took popular plots from all fantasy stories and mashed them into one single movie, it also makes references to alot of sci-fi fantasy shows at the time.

The reason the second one is considered the best is because it begins to blur all those lines of what good and evil is and when lando betrays them it shows you that the empire is basically the same as the empire but with different values then when you find out that luke is darth vaders son its mindblowing because the fact that they are parallells becomes even more blurry on what is good and what is bad and the guy we thought was a hero loses his big fight, he couldnt save han, hes seriously wounded at the end, hes not invincible which most movie heros are.

What lucas tried to do with the prequels was mature the themes while still keeping it kid friendly to try and expand the universe, but he failed miserably because the mature audiences hates the kid elements and the kids hated the mature elements, which is kind of funny when you think about the whole light vs dark theme.

This is why the new trilogy is purposely destroying the legacy of the original trilogy, because life is more complex now, theres no such thing as explicit good vs explicit evil, which is why both snope and luke die in the last jedi, the representations of evil and good

its cool because it merged western movie tropes (guns) with eastern movie tropes (swords) with scifi (still moderately unexplored in the 70's). so a hybrid of cultural movie stereotypes at the right time in history. part clever part luck part chance.

Hey guys, this has been melting my head for years just wondering if any of this sounds familliar, never turned anything up when i tried to search it.

it was an 80s-early 90's adventure movie where they were searching for some magical crystal

i remember one of group was an asian kid while the rest of the were adults , the movie had lots of kung fu and action in it

i specifially remember a scene where the kid had the crystal and it glowed and spoke to the kid, and then the crystal grew a finger so it could show friendship to the kid like in ET or something.

another scene where there was a dark hallway with shafts of light or something and if you stood on the wrong tile or broke the light arrows shot from the walls.

the most vauge memory i have is the fat dude going into a toilet which had a bidet beside the tolet and the guy didnt understand which was which, and i think he shit everywhere or something

any thoughts? i cant be mashing lots of different movies together,
dosent sound any less crazier when im typing it

In my new post recent Black Mirror mood I can only take this to mean that the kid actually dies at the beginning of Flight of the Navigator and it's all a simulation to keep the kid's soul from going stale on it's way back to a museum.

I haven't seen that movie since I was a kid and I wasn't a 3D artist then.

But hot damn I have a lot of insight into these effects, and the shape-morphing was not really a choice, the model has to be smooth and pointy for that shot to work. The way the subtle lines distort the reflection is perfect. The canyon shot is probably one of the only ways they could get a good looking effect out of the computer stuff.

To this day, what sells the shot is lighting, reflection and refraction. They did a really good job working within the limits of what the effects were capable of, and designed their whole aesthetic around it. That's the kind of thing that makes a movie age well. Honestly it looks better than Terminator 2.
Theoden - Sun, 07 Jan 2018 22:03:32 EST ID:4/1OqemN No.392801 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Damn.... I'd have to see it to try to find where he dies and then read the subtext from there, but that's a hell of a theory.
I'm glad a professional agrees. There are a lot of great practical effects and puppetry in there too, and the way the stairs emerge from the ship was also slick a bit of animation. But yeah, considering it came 3 or 4 years before The Abyss and 6 before T2, Flight of the Navigator's visual effects are woefully underappreciated.

lol I watched more of Flight of the Navigator and it's hilarious how it goes from having this semi-realistic lighting and reflection when it's all shiny and fast, but when it morphs back they didn't bother/have the tech to do the subtler diffuse reflection and it just screams at my eyes.

When I look at that ship morph I see it in the environment and slowly become an awkward composite from a blank grey environment like a miniature from an old B/W scifi.

That canyon shot looks so fucking good though.
Shoutout Veronica Cartwright.

20th Century Fox started when 20th Century Pictures merged with Fox Studios in 1935. A more apt description would be "20th Century/Fox." The current year is meaningless. And the idea that they are now "21st Century Pictures," is just corporate rebranding bullshit. It also shows the weird branding world where it took over 70 years for a dated brand to be changed. "20th Century Pictures," has been a dead brand for ages. It just stuck around because of branding and trademark traditions and practices. It honestly should have been "Fox Productions," or whatever by the 1950s.

I know at least in season 1 there's a character arc I found pretty emotional. The first season is only 6 20 minute episodes so I'd give at least the first two a go, they're really good. If you like those, watch the third episode if only because it kicks off another arc, but be mindful that everyone I know thinks it's the weakest of the season, so it might not be your cup of tea.

There's also some really great music in the show and some fun fights.

This. Soundtrack is fucking amazing. But beyond the music and the gags, I'd say it's worth watching because it fucking nails the small-small town rednecky vibe that only comes through in a show once every so often. Once you spend some time with the characters it takes on this king of the hill quality (obviously more oertly geared towards wordplay than KOTH but still a lot of rural camaraderie)

The musical cues are amazing in this show. Not since Utopia (UK) have I witnessed a perfect use of music in a television show.

Everyone sees this show as a bunch hicks, but the skids deserve an honorable mention.

Did you know drills?

I'm watching White Gold right now, it's about door-to-door salesmen in the 80's selling shitty plastic windows and two of the guys from Inbetweeners star in it.

I see theres torrents for a new Xfiles episode. Didnt feel worth making a thread but I'll be watching this later, thought maybe everybody else was as unaware of it having aired as I was.

What is extreme about pointing out the fact that there's a huge disparity between critics ratings and audience ratings?

To anyone who has seen "The Shape of Water" are there any eels in it? I want to take a girl I really like to go see it but she is terrified of eels and I don't want her to be scared.

Yeah I saw the movie and I don't remember seeing any aquatic life other than the fish guy, and he's mostly humanoid.
