Darren Aronofsky may be directing a new film!
Anyone else a big fan of his? What's your favourite movie by him?

I like a lot of his movies, mostly Pi. I wouldn't say he's overrated, mostly because his movies uh, aren't that highly rated. He doesn't enjoy widespread name recognition either, really. I like him as a director a lot though. I will look forward to his new film, there haven't been many good AI films (some). I hope he gets whats-his-name to do the score again uh Clint Mansell yeah. They do good work together.

I really loved his earlier works:
Pi
Requiem for a Dream
The Fountain
Black Swan

I haven't really followed any of his newer stuff, but I've heard that he's going downhill now. Such a shame from someone who I think has done so well thusfar :(

That's not his early work, just his directorial work except for Noah (shit) and The Wrestler (pretty good).

He hasn't done much in recent years except for some producing gigs.

Darren Aronofsky is one of the greatest directors of our generation. Say what you will about Noah or The Fountain — Requiem for a Dream, Pi, Black Swan, The Wrestler. Those are 4 top-notch, brilliant films. Most directors struggle to make fire once, yet alone 4 times. And these ain't hollow Hollywood films either, they explore the dark depths of humanity, the characters repeatedly destroying themselves in an effort to achieve some goal or ideal.

That being said, I was disappointed to see him working with Jennifer Lawrence in his newest film. I can't stand that bitch... she better actually, y'know, act.

Yeah I'd say there isn't really a "message" in a final, cathartic kind of way. That's what makes it so depressing, there is no message. The show depicts a bunch of suffering and struggling and at the end there's just nothing, no meaning or catharsis. It was just a bunch of terrible, meaningless, vain struggling that no one could stop or change.

I can't believe how many of you idiots buy into that that shit fest, pretending to be smart after watching a creepy cartoon with a horse which explores in the cheapest and least meaningful way themes which have been used and overused for decades. And not only is it creepy and repulsive, and above all, boring and repetitive, but the animation itself is horrendous.

Go see this fucking movie, guys. I don't usually make threads about a single movie, but holy shit this is a good one.

I wish I could hug Edgar Wright right now: he's reminded me why I love movies so much; how the rare film can feel fucking magical. I expected the whole "music as a soundtrack for life" thing to be fun as hell, but sort of gimmicky, and instead I was blown away by how perfectly it works. I literally can't remember the last movie I saw that was as enjoyable as Baby Driver. Hot Fuzz is my favorite movie of all time, and I never expected Wright to make another movie that I would love even more, but the guy pulled it off. And unless you have a phenomenal home theater system, you need to see this in theaters.

I suppose it's likely that my own love for music (bordering on an inability to live without it) makes me a little biased here: I felt physically nauseous when Buddy tried to deafen Baby. However, the rest of my family agreed that it's the kind of cinematic achievement that will reaffirm your love for movies. I can't recommend it enough -- seriously, if I were sitting on a pile of cash, I would find a way to pay for you all to see it lol

AV Club for television and RT for film (though Metacritic is probably a more accurate representation of review amalgamation). Personally it comes down to how the reviewer breaks down and analyzes it and how their words resonate with my thoughts of what I've previously watched.

Historically critics have been wrong about a lot of movies, full metal jacket and it's a wonderful life come instantly to mind.

That said if I'm not totally gung ho about a movie I'll probably use the Rotten Tomatoes score to decide if I'm going or not.

I also thinks it's idiotic to think critics hate movies or are on the take (movie studios will and have just made up reviews). It's important to remember they see a lot of movies, so cliches and trends are more likely to grind on them than the average movie goer. There's a big push from critics right now to bring back the 90 minute movie, and I don't entirely disagree, but if you're a Joe blow without AC and it's summer time, the Hobbit trilogy might be far more tolerable.

Do I really care about the latest fucking Spiderman reboot? How long is it gonna last this time maybe 2 movies and some cameo's in the avengers movies?

Whats with series that constantly get rebooted like, I lose interest if you just reboot it because of one bad movie. Nigga just make the next movie good instead of starting the fuck over every time.

Why do this do this? Is it really that detrimental to have one bad movie? Why not go "ok we made some mistakes but the next one will be better!" ??

Care to elaborate, friend? I liked Sam Raimi's portrayal of Peter Parker because he made you grow attached to this awkward dweeb over the course of the trilogy. Tom Holland is the Peter Parker that Tobey and Andrew couldn't be, whether you like him or not.

In the comics, he was only in high school for a handful of issues just to set up his side cast before graduating and moving all the characters to the newspaper setting. I want to be a voice actor really bad but I don't know where to start.

I would do the job for free. Money is not what I'm after. I just want to get better and get feedback.

What are some good places to audition? I've seen sketchy sites so I'm not sure which to use.

Also French is my native language and I'm afraid that it will taint my English accent in a bad way. That really bothers me, not having a neutral/average American accent. I so wish I didn't have that.

Could I ever get rid of it?
>>
Roy Neary - Tue, 11 Jul 2017 09:44:41 EST ID:vlSXbkoj No.385044 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I dunno, I find getting accents key to understanding new languages. Then again I've never been schooled through any of them by teachers with heavy accents.
My only credibility in this advice comes from watching a shitload of TV but I think I'm onto something.

Most important in French to English is transitioning from the syllable timing to stress timing. Poetry is your friend here. Even just written on the page it often demands to be read a certain way.

Just don't learn it from huge American sitcoms from the 90's, that was how a very small segment of the population spoke and now thousands of scandinavians have adopted it as their english tongue. It's a little strange.

Most importantly, there is a point where letting some of your accent through lends you a more convincing quality that stifling it entirely.
Morena Baccarin is the best example I can think of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_8Us2UHaTI
There's something a bit uncanny about her speech that always bothered me. Then one day I heard her speaking her normal voice and I suddenly realized she's not a bad actress, she's South American. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vb259nABzXM

Her natural accent in English is so slight but in stamping it out completely she draws more attention to it. The minor tells in her natural voice would fly under the radar in performance.

So my advice is modulate your accent up and down as necessary rather than trying to take on someone else's voice. The idealized accent you'd be going for probably doesn't actually exist in the wild. It might be useful to train yourself in that idealized neutral accent, but mix your natural voice back into it a bit.

Just be a French voice actor, geez. It's not like there aren't two significant parts of the world that speak and consume French media... I mean fuck, by choosing to be a French voice actor you increase your odds of success by a ridiculous amount since generic English voice acting is oversaturated as it is — and if you ain't noticed already, it's always the same people, over and over and over.

Mod makers and indie game devs will ALWAYS look for voice actors. I'm on the opposite side of you OP. I worked with a voice actor a few years back and I might need one in the near future. The gamedev community is almost exclusively english speaking, having a french accent might be bad in that regard. Tho the guy I worked with was french (I am as well) and he did pretty good in english, so I wouldn't worry. Just practice man!

There are literally places on the internet where you can do voice acting for free.

What do you think about Tom Cruise as an actor?
Put all his scientology stuff aside, is he actually good? is he over hyped?

Cruise is a Hollywood "actor". Hollywood types play themselves and can't act.

I feel like he'd be great in comedies. He needs to step out of his comfort zone.
