I'm really fucking bored, for the love of god, recommend something to me, preferably a series or a chinese cartoon.

I want something really engaging and exciting that makes me want to shove popcorn on my face and jut keep watching it until it ends. I like star trek but I'm not in the mood right now.

I'm into shonen chinese cartoons, crime/drama series maybe and not much more. I've already watched all of One Piece, HunterxHunter, Hajime no Ippo, Dragon Ball, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, so don't recommend me those.

PLEASE RECOMMEND ME THINGS I NEED TO WATCH THINGS I'M GONNA DIIIIIE

I'm watching pic related at the moment. Why the fuck did I download this knowing full well I'm terrified of ghosts? First of the "stories" gave me serious goosebumps, here's hoping the rest do and make this a worth successor to the V/H/S style format of three short films to a movie with a connected overarching plot thingamajigger.

Anyway, what horror you guys watch lately? I tried The Quiet Place but it was so boring I couldn't even get to the first scary part. The fact that it has subtitles is also offputting.

> I guess just being a decent movie really made it stand out when compared to all the other modern horror fare.
You hit the nail on the head, nobody makes good horror right now.

I recently watched A quiet place and that was pretty decent, if you torrent it make sure to download the .srt subtitle file cause i didn't realise for like 20 mins baked out of my mind.

Also just watched the void which wasn't as good as but had more physical horror and some neat practical effect work, goes a bit stupid at the end, reccomend if you're not sober and you enjoy the first 30 mins.

I started Raw because I really wanted to see it when it came out, but I turned it off when they cause the car accident and start eating the dudes cuz it was making me real queasy. There was an earlier scene that made me uncomfortable too.I still wanna go back and finish it tho, just probably not stoned.

>>401346
It's a cool idea and the soundtrack/setting are stylized well, the movie just has no payoff. The pool scene at the end is anticlimatic and the metaphor of the movie likening the paranormal shit to STIs is never expanded upon.

It's a trend I've noticed in modern horrors, like The Witch or It Comes at Night. They have a creepy premise and setting, but the tension doesn't build to anything, just sort of moves in shallow waves until the film ends with no real resolution. I think it's lazy writing to end with an ambiguous or unanswered question(essentially what you ask yourself watching the trailer: what's the monster and motives?) if the film doesn't raise a greater question by the end of the film.

Out of those 3, The Witch is definitely the best. The scene at the end gave us some resolution and mystery, it just didn't excite me that much.

Don't Breath was decent. There's a fucked up twist in it that kinda raises the stakes halfway through the movie and the ending is bittersweet but satisfying.

Green Room is still my favorite horror/thriller from the past few years.

For some reason I had forgotten about Fabian Bielinsky pretty much since the guy passed. I'm rectifying this injustice tonight by watching Nine Queens and Aura.

On the subject though, who are some of the other great (non-english) directors in the crime/gangster genre? Only other two that come to mind to me right now are Jean Melville and Kinji Fukasaku.

I can't recommend you any directors, but I can recommend you some crime/gangster films. You will undoubtedly have seen quite a few of them, but I hope you'll discover a couple of new ones.

The Killing (1956) by Stanley Kubrick,
Le Trou (1959) by Jacques Becker,
Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Abel Ferrara,
C'est Arrive Pres de Chez Vous (1992) by Benoit Poelvoorde,
La Haine (1995) by Mathieu Kassovitz,
Pusher I, II, III (1996, 2004, 2005) by Nicholas Winding Refn,
Amores Perros (2000) by Alejandro González Iñárritu,
Sexy Beast (2000) by Jonathan Glazer,
The Secret In Their Eyes (2009) by Juan José Campanella,
La Isla Minima (2014) by Alberto Rodríguez,
Wild Tales (2014) by Damián Szifron,
Victoria (2015) by Sebastian Schipper

I remembered enjoying this film years ago but couldnt remember it that well so i just watched it again. It's really not that great. Has some pretty good scenes and bateman is acted well and is interesting but the plot just goes in the wrong direction and i think it tries to be so much more clever than it really is.

Never heard of that AIDS metaphor before but I always figured that Bateman had a psychotic break and just imagined the murders for whatever reason.

Speaking of Bret Easton Ellis adaptations, does anyone here like The Rules of Attraction? I remember when it came out that it was retardedly marketed as a teen sex comedy to glean off the success of American Pie and it completely bombed. I love it, though. I'm not a very cynical person but it was still a fascinating movie and I loved how it ended. Plus the soundtrack is amazing.

So, my friend and I are having a discussion and we cannot remember whether or not Babe (1995) passes the Bechdel test. We each own copies but mine is at work and my homie's is in his storage unit so we can't watch it to find out. Can anyone here remember if it does? I wouldn't say that the Bechdel Test makes a very accurate litmus test as to whether or not a movie is "good" or progressive, the subject just got brought up because Babe's gender is actually never established

Side note: Babe is objectively one of the greatest movies ever created. Fantastic writing, action, direction, cinematography, the iconic song "If I Had Words" is both appealing and memorable, and the animals' performances are top notch. I fucking dare you to talk shit about Babe around me. Discuss

As for whether or not Babe actually passes the test, I don't think you can really apply it considering the characters aren't even human to begin and you can't just apply the tumultuous nature of dynamics between human men and women to animals who can't even process such a concept in the first place (and that's not even taking into account things like culture etc).

Unless they're like furries or something, but they're not. They are animals that talk. That and I don't even remember the plot of the movie despite me watching it when I was a kid. IF you had to force me at gunpoint I'd say no if only because the titular talking pig is male even though they are voiced by a female, and thus is probably given the most interaction while the other talking animals do stuff talking animals in a family film about a talking pig would do.

That'll do pig, indeed.

It's on Amazon video, included if you have a prime subscription. I just started the first episode. They have Amazon in Canada, right?

I watched Annihilation last night and was not a fan at all tbh. The trailer gave this impression that beyond the shimmer was going to be some trippy visually impressive place but no, it was just a boring bland forest with what looked like paper flowers taped to trees. I'll give it credit for the formation at the bottom of the pool though, that was very cool, so was both the orb at the end and the mimic bear. But Jesus Christ there was not a single likeable character in this movie, and Natalie Portman was so fucking bad in it which doesn't make sense because she clearly has the skills. She had a look on her face the whole goddamn movie like she just smelled her own dirty asshole. The movie was just plain boring in most parts especially when it was just a bunch of walking strong women cliches arguing with each other. I have no problem with strong female characters, as long as they're well written. It seemed like the writer of this movie didn't even make an attempt. Ex Machina is in no way a flawless movie but how do you go from that to making a pile of shit like this I just don't get it

I've been watching babylon 5 while high as balls and it's been a pretty good experience except that sometimes they'll pipe in background noise like voices talking and then they'll change perspective in a scene but the background noise doesn't change the direction it's coming from and it makes me feel like a schizo and I have to pause the video to make sure I'm not hallucinating.
