Surprised this movie isn't on the first 3 pages. Pretty fucking creepy, it's a horror movie, but now they're calling it a thriller. I'd say it kind of treads the line, though there are some definite horror tropes.

Really great flick showcasing the soft racism of white America, as opposed to the extreme racism that is often encountered in movies. It has a 99% on RT and had 100% when I looked yesterday. And it is that good.

Jordan Peele wrote and directed it. So it's pretty funny too.

I only saw the trailer but you confirmed its about subtle racism which I sensed from the trailer. I forgot the movie he was in but I really enjoyed his acting. He played in this world where you needed to earn points to do anything. The objective was to become an Idol and if you succeeded you would live better than 99% of the world. Looking forward to watching this. This and Moonlight.

>In the sole negative professional review aggregated by Rotten Tomatoes, Armond White of The National Review criticized it as a "Get–Whitey movie" "paint[ing] a limited, doomed picture of race relations" and an "Obama movie for Tarantino fans" "tailored to please the liberal status quo."

Reminds me of that negative review Cole Smithey gave Toy Story 3.

Armond White is a notorious troll. He'll automatically hate on anything even remotely popular for attention, and has been writing "clickbait" reviews before the internet was even a thing. He's awesome. If he hates something it's almost guaranteed to be good, and vice versa.

On topic this movie looks really good, and I look forward to seeing it and laughing at the alt-right when they inevitably start embarrassing themselves by trying to tear it down. The Oscars meltdown have already been a hoot.

Why does this have 100% on RT? It looks like a stupider version of The Visit.

Probably even has an ol' Shyamalan twist too.

Or is it suppose to be a wink-wink comedy? Is the scene in this gif suppose to be taken seriously?

looking at the trailers and from how people have talked about it, it just looks like a by the numbers archetypal thriller movie with some racial stuff as window dressing to make it stand out a little. I kinda doubt it's the masterpiece its weirdly defensive fans are making it out to be, and I doubt even more that it's some sort of super racist sjw bullshit some corners of the internet want to believe it is. Sounds like a torrent/rental sort of deal.

It's getting hype of the ~social commentary~ that essentially can be boiled down to "white ppl suck, black ppl are superior, white ppl wanna be us".

The scariest scene in the trailer didn't even make the final cut of the movie, total false advertising.

That's why it's getting such high praise. Looks dumb, but is one of the smarter movies I've seen in a while.

>Is it the next Shaun of the Dead?
It's much more poignant than Shaun of the Dead.

Honestly, I would love to describe it more but giving away too much would weaken the movie. I hesitate to even write spoiler tagged synopsis because it's really just that good.

>>379637
It's difficult to explain exactly what's so good about it without ruining its effectiveness. Great performances from the whole cast including the black lead character. His performance is so good, that even a non-black person should be able to identify with what he's going through.

It's funny in two ways. One is a straight up comic relief character. The other is in the uncomfortable humor of truth.

The creepy elements are creepy and effective.

IT'S AN ORIGINAL MOVIE FROM HOLLYWOOD. What isn't a remake or a reimagining these days...well the movie GET OUT, for one.

>>379663

The movie is seriously great and I'm still surprised NOBODY (other than one lukewarm response, which I welcome) else has seen it. I've been on both ends of this premise, white boy into the black home and brining black gf into white home. It's on point. It's the SOFT racism that exists in America and the baby boomer generation that's exposed. It's not some secret southern slave owning family (well kind of) or anything, it's about the perverse idolization of the other as opposed to the perverse demonization of the other.

But looking on it, it's simply a very well written, well paced, well shot, and well directed horror movie. Even keeping out the social commentary aspects.

Thinking about it, it does compare almost favorably to a feature length Black Mirror episode,

If you're gonna compare this movie to another, compare it to the vastly superior The Skeleton Key. Yeah, the subtle racism would be an interesting aspect, but it doesn't seem to be subtle at all. It's just not a stereotypical southern family, the racism and portrayals are still comical. You keep saying it's on point, but in what universe exactly?

It looks like a straight up comedy movie. And I bet someone could easily edit it to be one.

But like you guys have continuously mentioned, I haven't seen it. AND maybe the trailer was just a horrible representation. When decent quality is up, I really doubt I'm going to end up enjoying a Blumhouse horror production.

I don't think it's fair to label any negative criticism as "white fragility".

I am getting flashbacks of when any criticism of the new Ghostbusters was labeled as sexism. And when people thought Zero Dark Thirty was amaaazing and not some boring propaganda piece.

These types of movies and Star Wars movies are some of the hardest things to criticize when they come out.

The hyper-politicized or the fanboys, which is worse?

Reliance on jump scares and a stupid twist.

The idea of the movie is actually pretty creepy, a bunch of rich white people treating the protagonist nicely because they want to take control of his body it's sort of like the kind of fear of knowing something is only feeding you to eventually eat you. And the message is a meaningful one, albeit a self-satisfying one. But the neat idea is ruined by being a lackluster horror and topical movies are lame in general.

Speaking of jump scares, it occurs to me that the only reason Don't Breath got such acclaim is that the concept somehow gave it free reign to rely on jump scares just because they were in line with the rules of the story.

This movie blatantly says that black people are physically superior, and white people want to be black.

If I made a movie saying white people were intellectually superior and that black people wish they were white, I'd be labeled a racist and BLM would burn my house down.

It's a double-standard that's existed for a while now.

I should watch that movie again. I only saw it a decade ago in 8th grade at a party and I was too busy telling everyone to shut up so I could hear the movie we all decided to watch that no one caredcared about 5 minutes in. I remember the premise being really cool.

I'll probably see Get Out once I get paid tho cuz I'll go to any horror movie in theaters that critics don't pan. Horror gets shit on so much that I'll see anything in the genre that gets good reception because horror's best in the theater setting, even if I think the critics are dumb and the movie's disappointing after seeing it.

There's a big difference between portraying a group of people doing an evil thing such as racism (that's an actual thing in the real world), and portraying that group of people as being inherently evil.

White people have been portraying black people in fiction as literally subhuman monsters for centuries; H P Lovecraft and Robert E Howard, two authors whose work is still hugely popular and infuential to this day, both used black people in their literature the same way Tolkein used orcs and goblins.

Now someone makes a film that has the audacity to say, in a satirical manner, that white people being racist towards black people is and has been a problem, and you're ready to cry about it? Sack up precious.

White people aren't the only people guilty of racism. How about you give me an example from the last 10 years? I'm not saying there isn't still racism today, but if white people made a film pointing out the flaws of any other culture, regardless of how true it might be, there would be massive outrage. If you don't want to acknowledge the double standard that's fine, I've already posted in this thread too many times.

You say this like Get Out is a film "made by black people". You realise the majority of the cast & crew are white? This isn't a case of black people making an attack ad against white people, its a case of people from various backgrounds making a film about an issue that affects the country they live in and is very relevant to them, and apparently to audiences. You're the one injecting an "us vs them" narrative into this.

But keep with the false equivalencies and complete disregard of context if this movie really hurts your feewings that much.

This conversation is silly. Filmmakers should have the creative freedom to do what they want.

But with creative freedom should come freedom to criticize.

The people who think this movie shouldn't be made and the people who think this movie should be immune to criticism both demonstrate totalitarian qualities.

Bottom line, this movie is mediocre at best and it's not worth getting excited about either way.

The term "director" means something. Just cause a bunch of white people were a part of production doesn't mean they weren't carrying out the black director's vision.

Also this:
>making a film about an issue that affects the country they live in and is very relevant to them,

Please do tell what issue they're bringing to the spotlight. Use spoiler tags.

>>379849

>Are you sure it's not "upper middle class white secretly racist stiffs" suck?

No. You obviously didn't watch the movie. If anyone wants to know what happens in this movie, I'm going to write it here so you've been warned: A white family kidnaps black people, and transfer their consciousness into the black bodies. Why? Because black people are "physically superior". It's invasion of the body snatchers, except white people are the aliens, snatching the bodies of black people.

Saying "Durr it's about racist white ppl" is stupid. The white ppl in this movie don't hate black ppl, THEY WANT TO BE BLACK PPL. If I want to be a cat, I don't hate cats, I fucking love them so much that I want to be one. Envy, jealousy.

This entire movie plays off the recent "white guilt" and self-loathing of white ppl, while propping up black ppl as superior and or better à la the recent trend of "I'm African and my ancestors were kings and queens!!! Ima dark-skinned queen!!!"

Just got back.

Movie was great, easily the best horror-esque film Ive seen in years. The cinematography was excellent and I loved the use of blue hue lighting to really make some scenes feel weird.

The shot of the black bitch when they are in the room talking about the phone was DANK. They really knew how to frame a face for maximum creepiness.

I knew what the white people were up to the second they introduce us to the character from Atlanta in the family meeting, however it wasn't obvious to a few of my friends who I went with.

Overall Ill give the movie a 9/10. Very enjoyable, great acting/cinematography/color grading.

Caught it earlier today, very enjoyable. I wasn't feeling the gfs acting too much, but everything else was great. If the DVD brings commentary about the story/procedure, I'll be sure to pick it up. Strong start for Jordan Peele.

Now that people are finally seeing the movie. My one movie buff friend said he felt the finale was too tame. Most of the deaths are pretty tame, I'll admit. But I didn't feel like it let the movie down very much not showing the mom getting stabbed for instance.

Yeah, I see where your friend is coming from. Perhaps if the ending had more build up to it, it wouldn't feel so half assed. I still enjoyed the movie, though.

+1. Just saw the movie, thought it was a really intelligent take on the topic of subtle racism in modern America (and about comparing positive racism and negative racism). Plus the writing was really good - there were absolutely no scenes in the entire movie that you don't remember with a different meaning.

Also the Lego Batman movie was awesome. Super fun~

I'm glad to see that my first impression seems to be being proven wrong. I thought the trailer made this movie look dumb, but it also didn't really give any detail on what it's about. I love Jordan Peele, so I'll definitely be seeing it when there's a good stream available.

Saw it last night and that was my exact thought.

I liked Get Out a lot. It was shot well and had great music. It was pretty predictable tho, which I can overlook cuz I still thought it was a well made movie. That scene when Chris goes upstairs during the party and everyone just gets silent and follows his footsteps was a cool horror moment.

I'm definitely excited to see what Peele does next.

It also conveys that tension that the black person can feel in an all white environment. Everyone is secretly keeping tabs on you.

Totally, good point. The scene right after it was creepy too where they juxtapose Lisa being all nice and reassuring (even tho she'll later betray him) with shots of the white dudes bidding on Chris.

I also thought Rod was a smart character in the sense that he was essentially the black stereotype of yelling at a screen during a horror movie like at the end when he saves Chris he's like "I told you not to go into that house" while also being the most "woke" character and right about everything the entire time.

I saw it tonight and man that was a really creepy yet awesome film. I thought the way that they addressed the racism especially the scenes at the party and just the whole stereotype of blacks being physically superior and stuff. Didn't expect it to get crazy with the hypnosis and brain swapping shit. And Rod was such a great comic relief for the film, I was dying at some of his one liners and reactions like when he was listening Rose explain what happened with Chris and then saying how much she actually liked Rod.

And the ending itself was a nice surprise even as the original ending was supposed to be Chris being arrested by police for the murder of Rose and her family, and intended the scene as a reflection of the realities of racism.

That's interesting. I was watching redlettermedia's review and they said they were thinking that that would be ending, but it'd be way too predictable and on the nose. Glad they changed it cuz I agree with them.
