Archer Dreamland revolves around the international spy turned hardboiled private eye Sterling Archer and his quest to find his partner’s killer in 1947 Los Angeles. The case proves to be more difficult than expected after Archer quickly gets mixed up in a deadly game of tug of war between Los Angeles' most powerful crime bosses. Every clue leads Archer further away from his goal and deeper into a mystery involving kidnapping, prostitution and drug addiction.

The season premieres tonight at 10pm EDT on FXX

I don't think this season is gonna be as funny as the original show but it's gonna be more action and excitement and I actually kinda want to see how they handle it.

I also want to see if him being in a coma is gonna effect things in this dreamworld. Also if we see a little bit of the real world every episode like we did this one.

I hope it keeps being things happening in real life that keeps on effecting the dream world.

Not a bad premiere and I think the noir setting could work in Archer's favor especially being able to poke fun at noir tropes like when Archer was doing voiceover narration but you see that he was just talking to a dog while driving and when Mallory called Archer and the battle fatigue flashbacks to World War II, which definitely got pretty violent there especially running over Barry's ankles. It is nice that Len Trexler is back.

The format itself of Archer being in a coma wasn't surprising and I even said after last season that this season would be like that one season of Dallas except you already know it's a dream and if they're able to incorporate stuff from Archer's world into his dream world, that would be pretty cool to see how they blend. So far so good and I'm looking forward to how these next 7 episodes play out.

I wouldn't flat out say it jumped the shark but the season before vice, vice itself, and the one after were all a bit boring compared to previous seasons. still funny, but not as constantly. Adding more story and trying to develop some of the characters more was kinda weird too, it's hard to care about or empathize with people you only watched for being hilarious sociopaths. Frisky Dingo had a story but it never tried to make you get involved in the characters.

That said I don't think archer is "bad" or has had a significant drop in quality. It's just not as amazing as it used to be. the animation however, gets stronger every year. the action scenes are actually impressive now, it's a far cry from action scenes in frisky dingo, or the tweenimation they would use for some bits in later sealab. I hear they got the venture bros/foetus guy to do the music now too.

Anyone play Archer PI? It's like an ARG mystery game that you can play along with each episode being a different case file. It's a cool concept and all but it's like I'd have to watch the episode again just to get the items and solve the clues for each case.

I don't mind where the story is going and it's alright so far. The banter between Cheryl and Archer / Pam and Cyril has its moments. The only thing I really laughed at was Cheryl blurting out that she and Archer had sex after he told her he liked Lana. The humor is more subtle as the story takes a front seat in this season.

That whole backstory for Krieger was great. Those fucking robotic dogs and that cat. And it was nice to see Cheryl's brother back, what a weirdo. Also the whole recurring gag with the hot dogs was funny. Dreamland isn't bad so far but it's more story then humor driven like The Venture Bros but there's still some good one liners.

>Dreamland isn't bad so far
I gotta vehemently disagree. I know these are opinions, but this season is beyond bad IMO. Sometimes I think you re defending good shows after they go bad out of some misplaced loyalty where you feel bad making fun of something that once brought such joy into your/everyones Wednesday nights.

Also, I get the Venture Bros comparison, but its ultimately nothing like VB. Venture Bros may be plot driven but the good seasons will still make me laugh just as much as any other comedy. Some of their weaker seasons don't, but the most recent VB eps had me dying every time. Archer Dreamland is failing to do that. This season is fixing literally none of the problems that Vice had. If anything, those problems have been exacerbated here. This show has technically been a VB rip off from the start but it used to be funny so I would look the other way about it.

I'm still watching but don't know why. Ive been watching for years, I guess I'm just hoping the final season offers some closure.

It's not really that as much as it is that I dig the noir setting and just seeing Archer putting up with all this shit he's gotten himself in with Cheryl's kidnapping plot and dealing with Cyril and Pam. Honestly I've been surprised by the praise this season has gotten so far but I can see why it has and sure The Venture Bros has much better writing and voice acting but I've always given props to Archer for its character humor being like Get Smart meets Arrested Development but I feel it's still one of the better adult animated shows on TV.

It saddens me to finally accept it but this show isn't good anymore.
I just don't understand what happened here. They had a witty, nuanced, timeless comedy on their hands and then out of nowhere they started worrying that they'd "stagnated" and decided to veer all over the road, changing the setting and the aesthetic every season, trying to make us care about the story (like that was ever the point), trying to make us care about Archer transitioning into a good guy (like THAT was ever the point), trying to make us care about the FIGHT SCENES, for god's sake.
It's like you meet the perfect girl and then she goes insane with paranoia trying to keep you around and ends up getting sectioned.

I heard the only reason they changed it to Archer Vice was because of the ISIS controversy. If that's true, they fucked themselves in their asses so hard. Nobody gives a FUCK about the fictional name of a fictional agency. If anything the controversy would have generated views, and it would have blown over. Like now nobody gives a fuck about Isis (the real isis). They're a joke. If the show had stuck to its guns and rode out the drama caused by fags (who cares about the opinions of fags anyway), they would have come out on top. They could have even had some HILARIOUS episodes involving their org (Isis) running into the real isis, making fools of them, really sticking it to them satirically. But no. Dipshit dogfuckers at the top had to pull their limp dicks out halfway through because they were "concerned" about their "branding". Fucking bullshit.

I binge watched this first four season last year and really enjoyed the show but I haven't gotten around to watching the rest yet. Was Season 5 any good? Things seem to kind of plateau in Season 4 from what I remember after getting substantially better with each season before it. That reminds me, I wish this show was on Amazon Prime but it seems like FX has some sort of deal with Netflix since It's Always Sunny isn't on Amazon Prime either.

I thought season 5 was okay. It was a little boring but I thought it was the last season to have its heart in the right place, in that it was just about the characters getting into arguments and talking about obscure nonsense, with a vague political backdrop.
After that it stopped being the same sort of show imo, and became more sort of zany and wholesome, like American Dad or Bob's Burgers or something.

the show just didn't feel as hateful past S4. i actually defended it for awhile because the jokes kept coming at the same pace and with the same wit, but the characters matured and relationships developed. in the world of archer, progress and humanization of the characters are actually not good for the show. but then again how do you put people in a crucible of mutual loathing and douchebaggery for more than 4 seasons anyhow?

I think keeping them in the same place helps. If they're all just people who happen to work under the same roof then their apathy and conflict makes perfect sense, but if they keep choosing to be together, starting business ventures and living together and whatnot, it just doesn't work.

>>382502
>Always Sunny and South Park pull it off pretty well
ehhh, do they? They kept themselves going for longer than Archer but both of those shows lost their personalities a long time ago.
I mean it happens to every comedy, it's inevitable. You start with a base and then build more and more episodes on top of it, until one day it becomes wildly unmanageable and you don't know what you're supposed to be building, because you can't see the base anymore. All you can see is the shit you built on the way up and that's what you have to keep building on top of.

Putting aside Archer's quality, I just watched the episode but Cheryl's brother being inept with the whole ransom and Dutch becoming Terminator (even parodied the bar fight scene from the film) were this episode's highlights. I got myself all caught up with the new season
And while I don't exactly dislike it I just feel like they're limiting themselves by using this dreamland format, Archer isn't the full on Archer that we know and love and neither are the other main characters. Its an interesting premise but it feels a lot more story driven than comedy driven, which this show has always been rapid fire with.
Nearly every line that usually comes out of Archers mouth in past seasons is something comedic, insulting, or just plain stupid, it just doesn't feel right, and after the whole change up last season with the figgis agency I wish we could have gotten back to them being spies going on crazy adventures in exotic places
