Lisa is the best character on simpsons by Patton Oswald - Mon, 11 Sep 2017 21:21:07 EST ID:Ou7umoNN No.388074 Ignore Report Quick Reply

She's compassionate
She's ernest
She's attractive
She is intelligent
She actively seeks to improve herself
Sure she's a liberal hipster but i can relate to that personally.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "best". If you're talking ethics, sure she's obviously the moral center of the family. Frankly though, I liked Lisa a lot more before Flanderization rendered her a shallow caricature of her former self. She used to be written with a lot more nuance and sarcasm. She was always opinionated, moral, and intelligent sure, but she was also still clearly a flawed, dysfunctional Simpson who fit into the family's culture. Seems like over time though she just kind of evolved into a generic obnoxious, know-it-all liberal stereotype who might as well have been from a different family because that's how successive generations of writers (mis)interpreted her character (see also: Brian Griffin).

I can't wait until we have a lisa simpson fleshlight with an optional lisa simpson doll that it can be housed in for realistic fantasy roleplay.

You could argue every character on the Simpson's has been fladerized. It happens to EVERY character when a show outlives its welcome.
And I was just thinking of Brian too, but that just brings me back to what I was saying, all characters get fladerized once the creative element of a show runs dry. Thank you for your well thought out post.

I feel ya, but lisa seems like she got the worst of it. everybody complains about jerkass homer and fundie flanders to the point where it's cliche, but at least they somewhat resemble their previous existence. with lisa she's just some smug shallow idiot who gets swept up by whatever fad or celebrity shows up in the episode she doesn't even resemble the character she used to be most of the time. Granted I don't exactly watch the show anymore but the few new ones I catch all follow that pattern. really all the pop culture and celebrity worship the show is known for now seems wrong compared to what it used to be, it's so commercial and sterile. even season 1 has more bite. it's no huge tragedy though, 8 seasons of gold a few good ones in 9-12 or so is a damn fine accomplishment, and there's tons of other shit to watch that isn't shit.

The best quality of the best era of The Simpsons was that they had an emotional grounding to the cartoony comedy, plots had weight because even if they were about wacky bullshit and would return to the status quo at the end of the episode they were about characters we could identify with as actual people, and had an emotional depth that made their interactions meaningful. You didn't just laugh at homer, you felt for him and laughed with him, and you understood why Marge didn't leave him and his children loved him.
Lisa was the most effective use of this, and the early Lisa centric episodes are probably the best looking back on it.

This episode was a fox cartoon aired in 1990 that dealt with unexplainable, crippling depression in a deeper and more meaningful way than most television would be able to today.

Yea I just started the first season and it's killin me. I really like how liberal they are with the head on shots of characters faces. Also how expressive the animation is. The first moes tavern prank call had me laughing so fucking hard. His reaction, Bart's reaction, the animation was smooth and their faces rubbery and expressive, it was hilarious. I suddenly realized hoe horrible the show became. My gut tells me it was somewhere around the 6th or 9th season.

6-8 was when a lot of the original 30 writers left iirc. I think one other two main guys that wasn't matt groening left too in that time period.

and yeah the animation really took a hit. Looking back at that sequence where homer is hallucinating from the insanity pepper it's incredibly impressive, not just by simpsons standards but animation in general. Apparently a single guy animated that entire part of the episode, it really shows in how visually cohesive it is. It makes me wonder what a traditionally animated simpsons movie could have been back then.

The original writers left after season 2-3?. conan obrien etc was in the second round of writers that came in (even though conan was only there for like a season and a half?)

yeah totally agree, once they moved to digital animation it just felt so... i dunno lifeless i know that sounds like one of those music people going "maaaan you can hear like the warmth maaan" but the animation definitely lost its edge on the move to digital.

But OP, i totally agree, lisa episodes are some of my favourite episodes, except the one where they did harry potter rip off, if i have to see that episode one more time im going to flip.
Also Maggie is pretty fucking cool in the episodes where she is central.

Agreed. I may not be in the majority but I liked the early Klasky-Csupo animation the best. The crudeness gave it charm. Sometimes a color mistake would pop up or someone's mouth wouldn't move with the rest of their head but it was a lot more expressive.

I haven't watched this show regularly since season 14. A few episodes here and there but probably only 20% of what has aired.

ngl I'd probably still watch it if the animation looked like what it used to. I fucking hate it now and how clean everything looks.

This dude does a really good breakdown of how going off-model really improved the animation and humor of so many of the scenes in a classic episode.

It's a show made for children so it must be milk or carbonated water or something.
Any sexual interpretation you apply exists only in your head and goes against the context of the show.

Most animated shows have a floating timeline but I know Bart and Lisa had episodes where they turned 10 and 8 respectively.
