Blade Runner 2049 was the only movie worth seeing this year.
But it was a pretty amazing movie so it's worth being the only one.

  • Blade Runer 2049: Easily the best film of 2017, for me. It managed to be better than the original without doing too much. I'm looking forward to buying it on Blu Ray.

  • Logan: First movie where I went to the theaters by myself. It stuck out from all the shitty superhero films we're used to watching. Spaghetti western, The Wrestler, and the superhero genre blended into something dope. I agree with those who feel that it sort of falls off during the last act, but the rest of the movie made up for it imo. I enjoyed it so much, I bought it on Blu Ray.

Death Note (Netflix, 2017) - Fucking horrible. At first I was on board with the movie for embracing new ideas, but the writing is so abysmal. I sat through the entire movie, and finished it feeling frustrated.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Really not a bad movie as people say, but there was a lot of fat that could have been trimmed. Too many jokes and too many useless subplots. Had it not been for all of that, it would have been better. I had a change of heart about this movie recently, so I don't think I'll go into details ITT.

BR2049 for movie of the year. It's rare that a 3 hour movie is worth watching, let alone a sci-fi sequel no one asked for. I was extremely skeptical and sufficiently blown away.

Best show of the year was probably Mr. Robot.

Best new IP? Do people still make new IPs anymore?
Squidward Tentacles - Mon, 01 Jan 2018 11:16:01 EST ID:R47fTTwO No.392569 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I only saw

Power Rangers
John Wick 2
Alien Covenant
War of the Apes

Valerian and the city of a Thousand Planets (really wish they picked a different name)
Alien Covenant (wanted to hate it, but didn't)

New Category, the Meh category.

Power Rangers (I enjoyed it, but they messed some things up and they weren't little things)

John Wick 2 (Completely unmemorable)
War of the Apes (Same crime. Completely unmemorable.)
Joseph Dredd - Mon, 01 Jan 2018 11:45:14 EST ID:Zh/sUEXx No.392573 Ignore Report Quick Reply

lol, you didn’t like John Wick 2? I thought it was a fun movie.
Squidward Tentacles - Mon, 01 Jan 2018 11:47:24 EST ID:R47fTTwO No.392574 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I mean I liked it, I didn't turn it off...but I don't remember it. I judge a movie by if I remember it or not. If I don't remember it, must not have been very good.

I remember John Wick 1, it was a good movie. John Wick 2 kind of melts into 1, It just feels like a load of deleted scenes from 1 or just a bonus story that didn't really need to be told.

Oh forgot a huge pan: Star Trek Discovery. Such a shame, first new Star Trek show in over a decade and it just sucks. I had zero interest after only 3 episodes, a fucking Seth Macfarlane show managed to feel more like Star Trek than an actual Star Trek show it's ridiculous. Even if you think of it as taking place in the JJ movie verse instead of the other shows it still manages to be a disappointing and uninteresting waste of potential.

Lmao i forgot how bad The Dark Tower was. Best part is how after IT blew up they re-released it in theaters hoping to ride those coat tails, then pulled it again like two weeks later.
Debra Morgan - Wed, 03 Jan 2018 17:51:13 EST ID:DfS7vN2+ No.392648 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I'm trying to pare down my list, there were so many "ok" movies this year. So here is the best of the best, the best of the ok, and the worst of the worst. I watched about 80% of everything in theaters. The top picks are holistically good, from the writing to the cinematography. The middle weren't necessarily lacking, they just weren't as perfect as the top picks.

Must see of 2017:
Blade Runner (gorgeous, and raises some interesting philosophical questions)
The Shape of Water (emotionally engaging, even for my cold dead heart; a romance story without being gushy and flowery)
Atomic Blonde (spies done right)

Worth a watch, but you're not really missing out:
Logan Lucky (A redneck heist film. Daniel Craig and Adam Driver made this movie)
Logan (finally a gritty Wolverine movie)
War for the Planet of the Apes (surprisingly)

Don't even bother, not even as background noise:
Transformers (what even is this?)
Valerian (shiny, but that's it)

Daisuke Jigen - Thu, 04 Jan 2018 16:16:46 EST ID:zBvYuxUc No.392679 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Coco's only fault is being mid-tier pixar imo. Like it's not as good as Wall-E or Incredibles, but not as bad as the Cars sequels or forgettable like Brave. Definitely worth a watch, especially for the visuals, but not a classic.
El Barto - Thu, 04 Jan 2018 22:43:24 EST ID:XgsH7nii No.392689 Ignore Report Quick Reply
I don't see many movies in theatres. I think the last three I saw in 2017 were Stephen King's It, The Mountain Between Us and Justice League.

I liked them, but the mountain between us was basically Naked and Afraid for two hours, minus nudity. Justice league was ok. It I enjoyed.

I had that reaction to Gravity when the satellites collided and set off a cascading chain reaction of collisions that created a giant storm of space debris. It's like, didn't anyone fucking tell them how much space is in space? Dropped it immediately.
Joel Coen - Mon, 08 Jan 2018 20:04:57 EST ID:yV3ximT+ No.392827 Ignore Report Quick Reply
That's fair because Gravity is set in our time period with our technology. Not set in a different universe with lots of weird advanced technology.

This is like freaking out because the cars fly but they don't thoroughly explain how the propulsion works.

It would be more like having a magic projector that could project through walls and they don't explain it. It would be as simple as some exposition like writing on the side of the package
>VeriLite light emitter: Shifting photon emitter, for use projecting through inorganic material only.

That way you'd at least have some kind of reasoning behind it being able to shine light THROUGH fucking objects. But they didn't think of that. They just either didn't take it into consideration or they didn't think the audience would. Either way it's insulting.

Save the technobabble for the appropriate sci fi franchises, you sperg. Tech has never been explained in Blade Runner. If you want technobabble go watch Star Trek.

Why bother explaining something so mundane? Does your toaster have a label on it explaining how it generates heat by connecting to copper rods, which are connected to spinning magnets hundreds of miles away from you?

No, it doesn't, because it is mundane. Everyone knows what electricity is. Everyone in Blade Runner knows what a Waifu Hologram Emitter is. It isn't relevant to the story; it doesn't need explaining.

Besides, maybe it can tap into local ambient projectors standardized into every light fixture and wall socket. Then all she has to do is bluetooth her way into existence from his pocket. If you want to cry about how he broke off her antenna, easy fix: he broke her Wi-Fi antenna so she couldn't be tracked or hacked, but her Bluetooth and AM/FM antennas were still intact. Bam. Now she can still tap into ambient tech, but can't go to pornhub.

Does everybody really think 2049 is better than the original? I liked it a lot, and the soundtrack was incredible, but none of the characters are anywhere near as memorable as they are in the original. Or just compare the tension in that final fight scene in the sinking car, with the chase that ends with the tears in rain scene. Anyway, sorry for beeing a negative internet person, I still think it was one of the best movies this year.

but the best:
> The Killing of a sacred dear

> Twin Peaks

I can't remember seeing anything really terrible this year, only the latest season of GoT had me cringing a couple of times

2049 is far more well polished. It has all the things that keep you interested in a movie. The original didn't. And it skated by on the power of the atmosphere. It was very boring and I say that as a fan.

Also, I agree with this post. Specifically about Sony Animation. They make the most cynical, disgusting cash grabs in the industry. Pixels, Emoji Movie. Please don't support their bullshit.
In fact, don't support Sony pictures AT ALL. They're scummy fucks and that's why they were targeted for a hack a few years ago. Their shitty practices put a huge target on their back. Even during the hack they told their employees "fuck you, we don't care that all your shit just got released because of our security negligence." It's also been documented that they have made propaganda films working with the CIA. Zero Dark Thirty's sole purpose was to circulate the idea that good intel is gained from torturing people (even though it has been proven that it doesn't) and the CIA worked closely with the studio on this film.

For my picks, I'd say that The Leftovers, GLOW and BoJack Horseman was my favorite drama, comedy and animated show of 2017. For movies, my top five no order is Get Out, Blade Runner 2049, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Baby Driver. I still gotta watch some more stuff from last year. As for pans, I was pretty disappointed with the final season of Longmire though I can't think of anything else.

I'll give The Leftovers points for originality but idk the show just didn't do much for me. There were some pretty cool concepts but the character arcs felt weird like they were just winging it and it was kinda like they were hovering between going full sci fi fantasy and just being a soap opera. Like they couldn't really commit, though they kinda did in the end.

Movie would have been so much better without them and without the "villain". They felt like a reminder "hey, don't forget this is actually an X-Men movie". They serve no purpose, it differs from the comics but you don't need any Mutant other than "Weapon X" for a killing machine. That and the movie would have felt more isolated without them, I feel the director was afraid to make the movie feel too lonely. Folks defend the villain because "muh symbolism" but it was trash. Laura with the trigger scent would have served the same purpose and would have been more dramatic. I liked the interpretation of Laura but the lack of trigger scent was sort of baffling to me.

Of course some people were interested in what was already going on and it shat all over their hopes & dreams. Plus they invested in the wrong characters and got the message totally warped but hey that's catty personal opinion.

The only interesting thing that would surprise me is a prequel movie that takes place in the early Sith vs Jedi era, a full adaptation of Star Wars lore with Sith Masters vs Jedi masters.

Personally I don't, it's the movie makers that do. They want to ignore it all and do their own shit, hence why they made the non-canon announcement in the first place. Anon apparently missed that memo if he wants "a full adaptation of Star Wars lore", because there's officially no lore to adapt. We've always been at war with Eastasia.

Certainly not DISNEY since they jettison all the extended universe stories. Only hardcore fans do.

Yes, that's literally the event I've been referring to for 2 posts.
Extended Universe is cool. It's as important to any fan as any fan makes it. But when >>393664 is talking about how the DISNEY MOVIES should use EXTENDED UNIVERSE material, it comes across as tragically oblivious. That just ain't gonna happen, famalamas. And by all means, Fuck Disney for that decision. Might've been cool.

Disney is doing its best to pay tribute to EU fans, so honestly they should stop being such bitchbabies. They even let Timothy Zahn write a book reintroducing his classic EU character Thrawn into the Disney canon line. What more do these fuckers want? I love the EU too, but get with the fucking program, it's retconned, just treat it like a sweet alternate timeline.

USA Corporatism at its finest. When's Steamboat Willie going in public domain, Mickey Mouse?
