Greetings. My friends and I like to get drunk and go to cons dressed as Tele-Tubbies. It's hilarious running around and partying but our costumes are starting to fall apart. During Dragoncon 2015 I had an epiphany. What would be a durable cosplay where it would be acceptable to be drunk? Vikings!

We want to be as historically accurate as possible. Obviously plastic weapons would be safe, but I don't want to be an e-bay warrior. We are going to build our own shield, and I feel like a plastic dopey axe would totally ruin the immersion.

Keeping in mind that we will probably be intoxicated, how can I make sure that nobody gets hurt from these weapons? We won't be running or swinging them around obviously but drunk people drop things and if we drop them I don't want to gash open someone's leg.

For that exact reason I was leaning towards axes rather than swords.

tl;dr
What is a nice AFFORDABLE axe to use?
How can I make them as safe as possible?

Thanks for your time

You should probably get some sort of blunted replica of an axe from the time period you're looking at. That is, a real forged steel axe, but with a blunted edge.

Example: http://www.wulflund.com/weapons/axes-poleweapons/dane-battle-axe-blunt-replica.html/

I just had another mini epiphany.
A wooden axe (like something for training) that we paint metallic silver or something?

Just commission a local craftsman for what you need. A skilled hand can make better gear, in less time, for less money, than an unskilled drunk guy.

Also, FYI the shield is the hardest part to make. :/

Also, as stated before, for the weapons, just get some training swords. Either metal wasters or wood.

As for the "trench hawk".... not right at all. Ug, honestly, stay away from axe designs man, somebody is going to get hurt even if they're blunt. It's still a freakin lump of steel on the end of a stick, and if you're not actually training, it's going to be a hazard when you play. Use a sword, it has a crossguard and the weight isn't all at one end.

._. and also the wooden axe will likely cost more than the steel one, unless it's really crude. Liable to look like the tin man from a highschool rendition of The Wizard of Oz too. (Damn you shiny silver paints, always looking like duct tape!}

Hope this helps.

One thing that would be important to mention is that a lot of cons have rules about peace-tying (locking away) weapons, even if they aren't sharp. My best advice would be to get some light-contact LARP weapons/shields - they'll look cool as hell and you should be able to drop them on the floor as much as you want

Like

http://www.calimacil.com/

You can probably find a decent piece for around $50, which may still be less than you'd be paying for a real or wooden one

Sup guys, thinking about buying a Tula 91 Mosin from 1900. Apparently it has been counterbored and after some studying I find that I don't mind that fact so much. Anyways, I know firing a gun over 100 years old isn't necessarily safe but have any of y'all ever fired a Mosin that old? Would I have to worry about my hands being blown off? My buddy told me that generally the older the Mosin the nicer it was made and from pictures it seems to be true. Thanks!
>>
Angus Serringmodge - Thu, 03 Sep 2015 15:49:47 EST ID:bytXy50A No.41384 Ignore Report Quick Reply
Why wouldn't it be safe? Mine's over 70 years old and it's still working fine. The things are built like tanks. As long as the parts aren't worn to shit or damaged, it should be fine.

Also, from what I know, counterboring has the potential to fuck up accuracy if it's not done correctly. Otherwise it's meant to be fine since you're not sacrificing very much rifling in the scheme of things.

Buy one. If you have the money, find a Finnish mosin pattern rifle. They're much higher quality in general, but a mosin will still serve you just fine as long as the bore is in good shape.

My irons are a little canted, but I've been shooting mine for so long that it doesn't matter. The bore on mine is nice and shiny too, so I can shoot steel plates under a foot wide at 150 yards at my local range with it. It'd be cool to put some cheap optics on it, but I can't be bothered taking it in to have the rear sight post pins drilled out.

And there's a guy on youtube making 1km shots with his. If you're lucky, you'll get a good one.

>>41383

Check the bore integrity and headspace by asking the dealer to check it with a headspace gauge for you (in front of you). Usually headspace issues can indicate bore integrity issues.

Mosins are very solid rifles but mistakes do happen.

Check the uniformity of the crown, if the barrel is bent or the crown is nicked it can ruin the accuracy, this can be fixed if the barrel is uniform for the most part but a seriously bent barrel is a no-go. Obviously.

If the crown is nicked ask the dealer to recrown it and make sure it's a recessed crown if it isn't already. Shaving off the barrel to expose the crown face is a shitty idea only for rifles with a muzzle brake or some other extra layer of protection.

Check the stock for cracks. Just look at the grain and notice any irregular lines which indicate hairline fractures.

Learn the weapon before buying it inside and out.

The bolts usually have no issues but the firing pin is the weak point on most firearms. Check that it is working.

And like Angus said do make sure the bore rifling isn't worn thin. Otherwise you might as well buy a musket.

Those were/are totalitarian governments that paid lip service to Marx and socialism. Now, I would argue that they represent a discredited branch of socialist ideology but the Nazis certainly did not. The Nazi ideology was more about justifying state control and direction through nationalism and class collaboration rather than class warfare and worker's rights.

Hitler took much of his political cues from Mussolini, a former socialist who rejected that ideology in favor of a "third way." That is, not liberal democracy of the west and totalitarian socialism of the east.

This is an article by civil rights lawyer Don Kates. It explores the assertion by some liberal anti-gun activists that firearms ownership is associated with feelings of penile inadequacy. He cites some psychological texts, including Freud, who claims that fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional development.

All in all, an interesting read, and a good source to throw at people who may bring up penises in the course of discussing firearms on the internet.

I've lost more knives then I've owned..every time I lose a knife, It makes me very sad because I become attached to them after carrying them every day.
Nothing makes me sadder then being in a situation where a knife would come in very handy (opening boxes, cutting wood, other uses..) and I reach into my butt pocket only to re-discover that I lost that knife a long time ago..
I always have my knife in my right ass pocket, unless of course it is a knife I can keep on my belt.
How do I go along not losing my precious EDC knives?
