Hey /nra/
what kind of weapons do you care on your self for self defense?
I keep a 4 in switch blade on me at all times mostly for to use it as a tool (open things and cut carbord and stuff like that)

I wear an esee 4 for my EDC. attached to my belt using paracord.

I can wear it anywhere and it's almost completely hidden by my shirt. It's especially comforting when I'm delivering pizzas in a sketchy area. I just took a job in an office and I can't wear it on my belt there so I'm looking for a nice folder I can keep in my pocket

it's also a great knife because I can use it for all the outdoor stuff I do and is still highly capable of handling anything I need it for at my night job.

If you're of age and have a bit of money (and you live in a place that allows it) you should consider getting a CCW permit and a carry gun. Knives carried for self defense is ill advised.

Anyhoo, I carry a Kel-Tec PF-9 for protection. Been meaning to upgrade, but you know how it is.

I carry a knife for miscellaneous tasks. Used to carry my late grandpa's Buck, but after a close call a few years ago where I almost lost it, I switched to a Higonokami (pic related).

Excellent knife. It's a friction folder, so no locks. Beautiful, simple, elegant. It's the only knife for which I've actually gotten compliments. It's differentially heat-treated (like an OMGkatana), and holds a literal razor edge. Best of all, it's like $15 at this import shop in North Vegas, so if I lose it, no biggie. Just get a new one. They have them in LA Chinatown too, and probably online.

this is more of a novelty item. It is really unsuited to any actual use, and is more for show. I live in a humid climate, and I have to constantly clean and oil it because it rusts so quickly. Also, the bright shiny handle will tarnish VERY quickly. You can fix it with a little Brasso, but it will never be quite as nice.

They are not a novelty unless you use it as such or it is a horrible cheap knock-off. It is perfectly suited to normal pocket knife use and the carbon steel blade is a desirable feature to some. All that care/wear gives the knife character and increases its value.

But, to each their own Ian Gaudet. Too bad those skullcandy headphones didn't work out, maybe getting those gothic combat boots will make up for it.

"Unsuited to any actual use"? Could've fooled me, my knife sees plenty of use, and works admirably. I'm not building a tree house here.

Also, you're missing the point with your brasso comment. The patina on the handle is desirable and quite attractive to my eyes.

I carry a Kershaw Asset for self defense. I have some manner of manual Benchmade as a work knife. Sometime I carry a stun gun.
Once I can afford it, I'd like to get my CCW and a pistol. Likely a S&W .38 bodyguard, because you an load it with +P rounds. Someone told me to get a .357 because the ammo is cheaper for practice, and I can load it with .38. I dunno, though. I'm a fan of the .38 special

I never understood the idea of branding one thing with the brand of a company famous for making something completely unrelated. Converse jeans, HK knives... Then again, I'm such a Sig fanboy that I gave some brief thought to the Sig-branded folders, one of which is supposed to look a like the P226 grip.

It's an election poster from the Danish nihilist party that were started as a joke, but actually made it surprisingly far in the election.

The text translates to: NOTHING MATTERS - EXCEPT CUTE ANIMALS.
The other poster with the church bell says: STOP CHURCH BELLS! - FUCK YOUR SALVATION, WE'RE HUNGOVER.

Before the election we opened booths in the streets where we gave out free beer, smokes and sandwiches with fat and greaves. Sex, drugs n' politics!

I've never understood that either.
Only two parties, yet the states have over 500.000 elected officials.
We have eight parties with a total of 179 elected officials. . .

Plus a bunch of small parties i.e. Hemp party, Nihilistic party, Christian party, Muslim party, ect. ect. that were started as jokes yet somehow still survive - There are some serious non-elected parties, but can't really come up with any...

Its because choosing between more than two parties is too hard for us. For most Americans there really is only one party, the last one you voted for. Really, the last one you voted for is the same as the other party you could have voted for after the elections. So basically in America we have the illusion of two parties with only one sane choice, as per individual discretion, that makes up both parties.

But I'm afraid the states are beyond the point of no return, not even a thousand good people with good intentions could change anything. The only way to stop it would be if everyone stopped voting - and that's not going to happen.
You could break away as a micro-nation but then you would most likely be labeled a satanic - gay - black - homosexual - terrorist - cult and then all of your acronyms would give Waco a run for it's money. Huzzah! For freedom and bravery!

>>29560
Not sure if it's a comedy or a tragedy... You had THE TERMINATOR as a governor for SEVEN YEARS!! That's not funny that's scary!

Here in Denmark we had a comedian who ran every election for fifteen years as member of parliament. Quote from Wiki:
Daniel Jacob Haugaard (born 12 May 1952 in Tvøroyri on the Faroe Island) is a Danish comedian, actor and politician. He was a member of the Parliament of Denmark from 1994–1998. He ran without a party, and still got 23,253 votes, enough for a seat.
Haugaard ran for every election as a joke from 1979 onwards until he won in 1994. After his term expired, he decided not to seek re-election. Among his outrageous campaign promises were: 8 hours of free time, 8 hours of rest and 8 hours of sleep, more tailwind on bicycle paths, promises of better weather, right to impotency, Nutella in field rations (was actually implemented) and shorter queues in supermarkets.
Asylum rated his win in the Parliamentary election the 11th greatest prank of all time.

eh, we might be near hitting midnight on the "dusk to the darkest before dawn" scale. we do have several viable scenarios of maintaining hyperpower status. the fact that we're on top of shit hill already, with no real single equal power and everyone below us as shit creek rises helps a lot. as well as many natural resources, a fuck ton of land, 312 million people, etc.

i think we'll need a darkest before dawn moment though. we've lived too comfortably to maintain our rule, and as an old adage goes, the lean wolf hunts best. seriously, the only time we had a famine was in the 1840s once. we haven't had a war on our soil in 147 years. we've been growing since we've started as a nation, with no real backtracks in terms of growth.

might be time to turn imperial...

I don't carry it for use as a utility knife, although the design would be of use to anyone who has to cut through rope or netting on a regular basis, much like the Spyderco Harpy, which is intended for that purpose and has a similarly shaped blade (In that it's curved. The Harpy does not have a reverse-S blade like the Matriarch).

I suppose if you know what you're doing, you'd be able to make good use of a pointed blade. That shape is more useful for skinning than it is for cutting through the clothing and flesh of an opponent, though.

If you're untrained in knife-fighting (As almost everyone is) and have only gross motor skills at your disposal, a more specialized blade would be very advantageous. The sort of specialized blade that the Spyderco Civilian and Matriarch series of knives has. The point of the reverse-S pattern blade tends to pull deeper into whatever it is cutting, drawing flesh or clothing towards the rest of the curved blade. It's perfectly designed for slashing.

I don't know of another manufacturer that has such specifically purpose built knives when it comes to self defense as Spyderco.

You'd spend less on a Matriarch or Civilian than you would on a quality Bowie knife of similar blade-length. The Bowie is a utility knife. Decent for fighting. Good for dressing a kill. Optimized for neither.

Keep in mind though that knives like the Matriarch or Civilian are not advertised as being able to stand up to the usage that a utility knife might expect. They are not for everyone. Unless you intend to use it to defend yourself or to collect them (Which, given the tendency of spyderco knives to increase in value over time, isn't a terrible idea), there's no point in owning such a knife. It's just not practical for use as a utility knife.

i carry a kitchen knife, even though it's illegal in faggot uk
wrap the blade in outwards facing duct tape
then wrap it again in inwards facing duct tape, this makes a sheath

duct tape the sheath to the inside of the thigh, so it's attached to my leg but the blade is free to be pulled out

now if shit goes down, can reach down and whip out a kitchen knife quickly plus it's not obvious that i'm carrying

the full tang myth is more a result of poorly made mass produced stainless steel knives than anything else . Otherwise the Nepalese ( kukri is traditionally stick tang) , the Scandinavians ( Pyukko is also stick tang) etc would have changed their designs by now .

i dont cary anything. i try to stay out of harms way for the most and dont really put my self into a position where escalating to weapon use would be a smart idea, i dont go to parties often and live in a nice suburb. also i have this strange inclination to believe that if i did get jumped they it wouldnt be a situation where id be able to easily pull a knife out. like if i was at a party, i feel like getting sucker punched then attempting to pull a knife would end in me getting stabbed.

or say i do get the option to pull my knife out and fight the guy, do i really want to stab someone because either im angry or because he wants my money? idk always felt like carrying a weapon increased the risk level of a situation.

if i did cary a weapon, itd be mace. blast the dude in then just whoop his ass as he trys to breathe

looking for an edc for work. not as a self dense weapon. im a janitor so mainly ill be using it as box cutter. i already own a husky folding box cutter but id rather have a knife as most of these have clips, and its not like i break down boxes all day err day so carrying a box cutter as an edc would be kinda lame, i alreay keep a box cutter on my cart but i want one on my waste.

Sub 3-inch wharncliffe style blade, nice finger choil, and holy hell does it cut. The grind is pretty steep, so it'll cut even when it's 'dull', just like a box cutter. Cheaper than a delica, and probably better at what you need it for. Comes in serrated too if you want.

Im not planning to kill anyone and I live in a fairly safe country. 230 lm with 10 Hz strobe and 156 mm hardened aluminum frame should do the trick.

im really not worried about it, im c shift so i see besides my crew, on avg a total of zero people a night. the kershaw od2 looks like it has no lateral strength for prying, which might happen.

i really need to go out to a store that carries a decent selection and see what fits my hand, that looks kinda small

If you are prying with a folder, you are an idiot. Get a widgy bar or similar for prying. Prying with a folder will break it or ruin the blade unless it is made to pry. Of course it has no lateral strength, it is a pocket knife for opening boxes like you asked for. What you want is a fixed blade like an izula, bk11/14, etc. if prying is in its future. Something thick without anything fancy to get fucked up.

Right tool for the job man.

Very few shops have a decent selection unless they are dedicated to knives or have a strong military community. You will be better off after a few classes at Google U and then going to a flea market or gun show.

Guy who suggested the Tuff Lite here. You should never use a folding knife for prying, especially a Cold Steel, which don't have steel liners. Actually, that goes for most knives, but there are single-piece multi-tools built for that purpose. Here's a few that I know of.

I have the Toucan. It's a bit small, and it can cut cardboard, but you have to put a little bit of force into it. I don't really recommend it for that purpose.

You should probably just buy a folding knife AND a small pry bar. Put them both on a keychain or whatever.

i dont mean pry as in separating 2 pieces of wood or trying to get a nail out of smothing i mean using my knife to get under smothing my finger nail cant, maybe scrapping at some dirt my finger cant get or being twisted side to side to make a hole in a container.

Uhh yeaah. Everything suggested in this thread can handle that. If you still can't make your mind up though, just get a SAK.

I'd skip the delica and just get an endura. it looks a bit more "scary" but it's a better all around utility size.

I bought one for a friend (Online since they had no credit/debit card) and got to play around with it before I gave it to him.

You're going to love it. Solid knife. The only thing they could do to make me like it even more would be to offer it with a black finish and full flat grind.

the blade shape is different. you get a longer portion of clean flat blade, which is more convenient for some things. especially for slicing things. You also get a bigger handle on the Endura, which is great if you're using gloves or have big meaty hands.

The delica is a perfectly good knife, but I think the endura is worth the extra $10.

Noone's mentioned the Resilience from Spyderco's Tenacious line yet. 4.25" blade AND cutting edge for $40. Guess you're all a bunch of steel snobs.

That statement would be right if it were correct. Taking an inch off a knife is a big deal if you actually use your knives.

Both have G10 scales. I wished the Resilience came in blue though, like the rest of the line. That'd seal the deal for me.
