Finally a JS question for you :).

But what about using greasemonkey to detect it when it keeps coming back on this dynamic page and removing it every time?

What to code in C? by Caroline Wumbleket - Sat, 18 Jun 2016 18:15:55 EST ID:NSh3STBF No.35753 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Hey guys,

I want to learn C but have no idea what project would be fun enough to keep my attraction gripped.

I never did C before, only some C++. I've done some inheritance, lists, binary trees, properly handling pointers and such. Never did anything fancy with that, but I still well remember those concepts.

It's a pretty basic request, I know. My imagination is quite simply very dry, motivation low. Oh and also,

Another Google Question I'd Rather Read Your Opinion About :
~ How *truly* different would you say C is from C++?

Thanks in advance, friends.

>How *truly* different would you say C is from C++?

Maybe start by reading a C book.

These days the most fun you can have writing C is using a microcontroller board with an AVR or PIC.

You can blink LEDs, create sound, read potentiometers. If you don't know what to do a (midi) synthesizer is always something that's fairly easy to learn but hard to master.

C vs C++ is that you don't use any OOP, just procedural code.
You are using structs instead of classes and pass pointers to those structs to your procedures.
You also have to allocate memory manually which makes it easy to have bugs you aren't used to.
You are also missing pretty much any convenience functionality like foreach, etc...

If you want to write software for the PC it makes sense to use C with other languages like python and build libraries for your algorithms.

Zed Shaw's Learn C the Hard Way

Also this book: http://csapp.cs.cmu.edu/ which teaches you ground up, binary/floating point/assembly and everything else you'll need to know all done in C and assembly. Expensive book i used libgen.io to pirate the most recent version (it's x64, old versions are 32bit).

There's also the book The Unix Programming Environment which has a lot of C programs in it to try out.

As for what to do in C, if you're not maintaining some existing C project like an embedded OS, Linux/BSD kernel or similar then don't write anything in C it's too dangerous. Use Go instead of that kind of systems/network stuff as it's memory safe. If you don't care at all about memory safety then write whatever you want, like embedded systems but make sure they're offline systems.

I'm coming back to C and C++ from a few years off in Scala, java, C#, and python land and holy fuck do I hate C++ now. C at least keeps it simple and doesn't fuck with you. But C++ has so many unique keywords and implicit definitions that keep getting bolted on that the language itself is a maze instead of the standard libraries.

Anyways I can power through that but the build tools are really what's holding me back. Are there any good references for building libraries and how linking works for C?
Nicholas Pinkinfoot - Fri, 01 Jul 2016 02:36:56 EST ID:sGFR0zid No.35801 Ignore Report Quick Reply

I read Zed Shaw's book as my 2nd C book and thought it was the most tedious, least helpful CS book I'd ever read. He's a sloppy writer, with sloppy editing, and awful at explaining things. KN King's C book is the way to go for *learning* C IMO. Zed Shaw's book is only useful to someone who already knows C decently as a refresher, at least as far as I could tell.

Java Game - Snake by Stephan Floffingbridge - Mon, 27 Jun 2016 19:35:28 EST ID:SWJfiJ9j No.35773 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Made a little game of "Snake" in Java. What do you guys think?
I used Slick2d & LWJGL.
Jar-Splice to export as a .exe
Resource Hacker to give it an appropriate icon.
I still need to add sound effects and more complex ''maps''. (Possibly sprite based graphics as well).

Looks good.
goes a little fast though, if it starts me facing up I pretty much die instantly.
Also, why would you turn it into an exe? that kind of defeats the purpose of using java.

You should also try to limit the amount of logic in your render methods. For EasyLevel.java, I would have probably split that up into 3 different classes, (like IntroScreen, GameScreen, GameOverScreen or something) and had the update function decide when to change between them.

I used this because from what I understand you can't customize the desktop icon of a .jar file.

I chose exe for the above reason, and also because it feels more like a ''legitimate'' program then some random .jar file. I only mentioned it's use in case someone wanted to crack it back open and see the code.
(If you know of a way to customize the icon of a .jar file I'd love to know!)

A lot of people have mentioned the speed, so I'll probably be refactoring the code to include a main menu / difficulty options.
There's also currently a bug with the starting direction. By default you are supposed to go up, but thanks to my lazy design Input grabs the last input entered before you die, hence why it's not consistent.
I will probably add a delay timer on re-spawn to negate this and ensure the player is heading in the right direction.

As for the logic, yeah, I have to clean that up quite a bit. I threw in score / lives at the last minute and it's far from elegant.

Thanks for your feedback! I'll post updates as I improve the code / add features!

Hi, I just inherited this old SCH-U450 Verizon phone. You can visit the "Verizon Media Center (Get it Now)", and download games and whatnot - all of them, it seems, from different studios. I'm wondering if anyone here knows how you go about programming that device/OS.

What languages and tools are available? And how did those game studios get a Verizon deal?
Nell Worthingfuck - Thu, 23 Jun 2016 12:07:35 EST ID:PeK+KZzj No.35762 Ignore Report Quick Reply
You're probably looking at J2ME or BREW. The way it works is you design and write a game for one phone and then port it to other phones. This sounds like it's a bigger pain in the ass than it is on Android. I assume getting into a Verizon store is similar to getting into any other app store, just not so well advertised.

I had to change all the verb tenses above because I realized that this is still a thing. Kind of a trip.

Any 420nons know how to program UE4?

This kickstarter project is switching from Unity 4 and needs a Kevin Flynn motherfucker who can do UE4 and C++.

It's a plot-oriented dieselpunk/fantasy love song to 90's RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Fallout, Arcanum).

I ask because I've seen some of lead dev CohhCarnage's let's plays, and he seems like a switched on kind of guy who'd make a really good game. And the only way I get to play the game is if it gets fucking finished, so Ima enable all over this sumbitch.

You know, just the other day I was thinking that anything that's been billed as a "love letter" to old video games has turned out to be a complete fucking disappointment. A lot of games don't survive an engine change, so this probably won't even be that.

Inorite? But there's some good stuff in their CVs. But also Colonial Marines. But I want to believe.
But actually being their Code Monkey Prime would be a way to help stop it turning into Daikatana 2: Electric Boogaloo.

>Previous Work:
This is our first project as a team, but here are some shipped titles team members have worked on:

Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2 - Chris Jones (Enviro Modeler)
Aliens: Colonial Marines - Seth Black (Programmer)
Bioshock 2, The Bureau - CJ Green (Tech Artist)
XCOM 2, Tomb Raider (2012) - Si Tran (Animator)
The Order: 1886 - Mark Judkins (Rigger)
Bound By Flame - JC Doublet (UI Artist)

Ok so, finally upgraded to windows 10, wanted to play games..

I installed the VBA10 (Gameboy emulator) app,, downloaded through the windows store (which is completely new to me)

After a drunken night of ragequitting and starting over, it seems in my fit I deleted the app.. both from my files and from the apps/programs list in my laptop's control panel. BUT not from the windows store.

Now I'm trying to reinstall it, but the windows store is the only place I find to download it,, there it says "this product is installed."
and when I press open nothing happens

I sent an email about this to their support guys but no reply after 3 days

what do I do, oh great techwizards?

Stop downloading scamware emulators from the Windows store. They're just stealing code from better emulators that probably aren't on the store so they can show you ads.
