Okay, what the fuck are the Giants doing right now? Six game losing streak and an offense that put together 1.5 runs on average during those six games? Was losing Sandoval that much of a detriment? Or is it the injuries to the likes of Pence, Ishikawa and Cain?

You were crushing me for the first half of the week, your bats have been on fire while mine have been terrible. Luckily my pitchers have all done well so I'm still in it, but I still have to make up ~20 points. Everybody is going for both of us today and you've got 2 SPs going vs my 1, should be pretty close.

That would be hilarious if he goes back to being an All-Star caliber outfielder in Texas. Hell, even a decent outfielder would still be better than the putrid showing he had in Anaheim. Also, I've seen it reported that he's only relinquishing $7 million of the salary the Angels owe him, so I'm guessing he's relinquishing his March & April salary or something.

I'm very curious and a bit excited to see an empty stadium game.

I saw low tier college baseball games with a handful of people or a independent league game in bumblefuck nowhere on a lazy thursday but a MLB ball park empty is surreal.

They should have just played in D.C or the nearest available MLB stadium not being used. Like when the Vikings in 2010 played the Giants in Detroit (because the metrodome roof collapsed from snow on an off day)

White Sox as a team are okay, but Sale getting blown up by the fucking Twins isn't. Every pitcher tosses a bad game once in awhile, but this on set me up to lose badly to Shovel when it should have been a prime spot for a great start against a mediocre Twins offense.
>>

Their starting pitching has been abhorrent; Samardzija leads the damn team in ERA at 4.78. I'm really interested in seeing what Carlos Rodon can do as a starter, and if their back half of the rotation doesn't turn things around in May then I think Ventura has to give Rodon a shot since just about anything would be better than their starters constantly giving up 5+ runs a game. Their offense has been okay, not great, but underwhelming. Abreu is a fucking stud, and Garcia seems to be heating up, but the sluggish starts of Cabrera, Ramirez and Eaton has really killed the team in multiple games. LaRoche also seems to be a poor man's Dunn, so unless he starts hitting for average then the absence of Dunn's wild card power will manifest itself in LaRoche's mediocre bat.

I didn't even realise it until I checked after today's debacle, but the White Sox have an absolutely pitiful offense as well. I wonder if Kenny Williams would dare fire Ventura during the season if they don't turn things around by the All-Star break. What if Ventura was fired and replaced by Jim Thome?

It would probably take one of your stud outfielders to make a deal work and I wouldn't insult you by asking or Trout or Harper lol. Lucroy's good but even when healthy he's not worth what Price is worth. I'm on the fence about trading him in the first place, he's been pretty good but it's kind of a coin flip between him and my other SPs over who to start at this point and it usually just comes down to to who might pitch 2 games in a week or if only 1 game the opponent. I sat him this week in favor of 2 starts for Miller and that worked out really well, and I'm sitting him this coming week in favor of Miller's match up... sitting David Price just feels wrong lol. I'd rather slot in a guy like Weaver or Colby Lewis for 2 start weeks and take the risk of them performing badly while getting some production from a hitter's spot by trading Price.

tl;dr I'm not trying to dump Price, just looking for good value for him. Couldn't work out a deal for Lucry now or any time in the near future.

They're definitely in a swoon, but they were solid as recent as a month ago. Cain & Peavy are back and are pitching deceptively well despite all signs pointing to both being on the wrong side of 30, so if they can keep up the magic tricks they may help the team chase after the West pennant in the 2nd half if the non-Posey bats wake up (Pence coming back surely will help and if Crawford & Belt get out of their midseason malaise they'll help, too). Dodgers not running away wit hthe division has to be seen as a tremendous disappointment considering how well Grienke is pitching (Kershaw has been borderline All-Star worthy, too) and their murderer's row of a lineup, although some of their guys are clearly overachieving (Turner and Grandal, specifically, and Gonzalez came back down to Earth after a torrid start). Hell, the D-backs have a shot at the NL West at the moment and I wouldn't count out the Padres just yet, despite being 10 games back. If the Dodgers don't fix their shit then the Padres could make a run in the 2nd half if their pitching and bats finally catch up to where they predicted to be (still gotta work on that defense, though).

does anyone care about the all star game?

I used to love it when I was a kid. It was my only chance to see the AL players that I heard about, but never got to see my home team play, like Eck, Griffey Jr, Puckett, Frank Thomas, etc.

Then came nationally televised games, then came interleague play, and now, I can see any player I want to pretty regularly. Then came the tie (who really cares?), and now this exhibition game "matters" for some reason (even though home field advantage matters very little in the MLB - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1803416-is-home-field-advantage-as-important-in-baseball-as-other-major-sports )

So, does anyone really care about this game?

I think the home-field advantage thing is touted too much, but I suppose it does give teams a sort of impetus to play harder. I think the general quality of play is pretty good for an all-star game (definitely better than NFL/NBA, that's for sure), although I haven't caught it in a couple years. All in all it's gimmicky, but at least it has a certain pedigree.

Pretty much in the same boat. Loved it as a kid, loved the HR Derby and the celebrity game. Now I don't really care, even with the WS home field advantage on the line, which I think is stupid. You make a good point about the expansion of Interleague play diminishing the uniqueness of being able to see the best of the NL going against the best of the AL, too. I'm intrigued by the timing aspect of this year's HR Derby but I don't like the bracketing system since it just opens the door for a scenario where two guys hit at a blistering pace and finish with like 14 and 15 home runs and one guy gets eliminated where in another bracket two schlubs will struggle to 3 and 4 home runs and one of those guys will advance while the guy that hit 14 gets eliminated. I don't like the sound of that. Just time them all, op 4 advance, time the second round, top two advance, time the final round, top score wins.

Huh, due to the weather they're changing the HR Derby rules on the fly where everyone gets 4 minutes, running, and that's it. I think they're still doing the bonus time for long homers but they aren't doing the stopped clock thing it seems.

I'm a fan of players wearing their traditional club caps on top of whatever shade the All-Star jerseys are, so hopefully they didn't nix that for this year's game and this was just a HR Derby-only thing so they could try marketing new caps to fans.

>"He is a guy who always hits lefties. It's an area where we have struggled this year"

>"This is really about 2015. He fills a need for us," Daniels said.

>Daniels said the initial plan is for Napoli to be the DH or first baseman against left-handers, and only be used as an emergency third catcher

Situational hitting against lefties and covering their ass in case one of their catchers gets injured. Makes sense, they're trying to make a run this season. Adding a quality role player helps them do that, even if he's struggled this season. Plus the Rangers obviously like him and believe they know what they'll get out of him.

You don't have to be a great pitcher to throw a perfect game, things just have to go right for you. Dwayne Wise jumped up and saved a home run to help Mark Buerle have a perfect game, a guy who could never throw over 90. Last guy before him to throw a perfect game was the dominant Randy Jonson. So it can go both ways.

The Mets actually have had great pitching and since trading for Cespedes they've had one of the best offenses in the NL. Lucas Duda recovering from ebola and hitting like 2014 Lucas Duda has helped things further, and getting David Wright back makes them even better, still.

Yeah, the Nats are a major disappointment this year, but it's not like their gonna lose the division to a .500 team like the old NL West days of mediocrity. The Nats are being beaten by a better team right now, plain and simple.Their only hope is that their offense finally turns things around now that everybody is healthy once again since they already have the rotation and bullpen fit for a contender. They badly need someone other than Harper to hitt the ball, though.

This is pretty sad. Jeff Samardzija is losing millions and millions of dollars off his next contract with each start he makes this year. I was hoping he would sign with the Cubs in the off-season to further punctuate how awful that trade was for Billy Beane and the A's (the Cubs ending up getting Russell and Hammel & Samardzija back), but I think Samardzija might be washed up and pitching for some garbage team as the "veteran presence" third or fourth starter next year.

Pagan is currently one of the worst starters in MLB, and the worst outfielder (-1.1 WAR). His fielding is atrocious (-17 defensive runs saved above average). His batting fucking blows (currently batting a pretty much empty .258 with a staggering .308 slugging).

Gregor Blanco has been batting .300/.388/.366 while Pagan was out and was fielding much better. The Giants would have to be stupid to put Pagan back in while Blanco is doing just fine.

So what does Bochy do once he's back? Puts him right the fuck back in CF and right the fuck back in leadoff.

Why. Why, why, why. Whywhywhywhywhywhywhyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Bochy already has one foot in the doorway to Cooperstown so he gets a pass, but Pagan is definitely washed-up at this point of his career. My best guess is that Bochy slotted him lead-off right away either because he has decent stats against Grienke or in Bochy's old-school train of thought he believes Pagan "deserves a shot" because of his past accomplishments and veteran status. They have one month left to chase the Dodgers and the Cubs, though, so he better have a short leash on Pagan.

The entire Playoffs is shaping up as something great this year. That huge struggle in the NL Central, the Mets in the Playoffs for the first time in almost a decade with a genuinely scary offense and a talented group of young pitchers, the Blue Jays in the playoffs for the first time in like two decades with an even scarier offense and now with Price & Stroman anchoring a deceptively strong rotation, Kansas City with a better offensive team this year but with a lot of questions about their rotation since Cueto has been struggling so much, and the great race going on in the AL West with the Rangers surging behind their offense, the Astros fading after being on top all year, and the Angels making one last late-season surge to try and save Scioscia's job. The Twins are also making a surprising run at that second Wild Card spot, but I think they're going to be a scary team next year after an off-season of rotation improvement. Plus I guess the Dodgers strolling into the Playoffs due to a piss poor division, it will be interesting if they can compete with the NL Central juggernauts or the Mets.

Heartbreaking loss for the Astros. I guess from a glass half full perspective they get trick-or-treat Johnny Cueto in Game 5, but that disappointment is likely going to linger if they don't come out hot from the get-go in Game 5.

Cardinals were horribly banged up by season's end. The fact that they still finished ahead of the Pirates and Cubs in the standings is pretty unbelievable considering the injuries to Wainwright, Holliday, Adams, Grichuk, Walden, Martinez, and others. Jays went like 0-13 with runners in scoring position. Bad calls generally end up going both ways through the course of a game, and they definitely got hosed by that fan interference not being enforced, but they had chances to score some runs and the guys they traded for specifically for these types of moments in the playoffs, Donaldson (who's the AL MVP, for chrissake) and Tulowitzki, laid a big fat goose egg when it mattered most. It just wasn't mean to be this year for the Jays, man.

Of course, when youre batting at the top of the 9th, have one man on second, another on third, with NO outs, when you'e down by one run, you need a straight line drive right to the back of right field. No ifs, ands, or buts. Even a sacrifice fly to tie it up. That's a fact.
But you have to wonder where we'd be if that neckbeard fuck didnt blatantly interfere. It would have been a different game, psychologically.

Mets shot themselves continually in the foot with poor fielding and questionable roster/pitching changes. I think they're a better team than their WS performance indicates, and I'd like to see them back there next year.

>Bob Nightengale reports that Nationals GM Mike Rizzo offered the job and Black accepted it without the two first securing an agreement on the terms of the contract, most importantly the money. According to Nightengale, the Nationals’ paltry offer was for a single year at $1.6 million. (The terms of Baker’s contract haven’t been reported, but it was announced as a multiyear deal.)

I'd be surprised if Baker's deal is more than just two years and an option given that the Nats have had a carousel of managers come and go for the past ten years. Still it's ridiculous that they lowballed Black like that.

They were already rebuilding, so I'm not really sure why they traded away a promising young star instead of building around him and their other young players. What the fuck? Yankees traded for Chapman even though they already have Betances. Are they going to put Chapman in the clsoer spot and stunt Betances' growth into a dominant closer or are they going to put Chapman in at setup despite the huge cost it took to bring him in? What a weird trade. They even have Andrew Miller, who's not that bad and isn't very old, too. It's like the Yankees are building a Fantasy Baseball bullpen or something.

Neat. Tropicana Field is a great place when the Rays are winning or in the playoffs, but it's really small and the field is garbage. Here's hoping they can find a good location for a bigger stadium.

It's not so much the dome as it is the catwalks being above the playing field and in play. I remember one time a player hit a ball that went up onto the catwalk and by the time the player was rounding home, the ball dropped and the fielder caught it for the out.

It's been 9 years since Bonds was last in baseball but I think it's a good move by the Marlins not just to bring in a hitter like him to coach players on becoming better hitters but also to help rehab Bonds' image. It's been working so far for Mark McGwire as the Cardinals' hitting coach and they're now one of the top hitting teams in the league.

Isn't McGuire working with the Dodgers now? Also Bonds got hired months ago but I guess for whatever reason ESPN.com did this whole feature on him yesterday. With the NHL considering expansion in Las Vegas and Quebec City, Rob Manfred has said that Montreal and Mexico City are the frontrunners should they expand - http://www.si.com/mlb/2016/04/22/mlb-expansion-montreal-mexico-city-charlotte-portland

I can't see them expanding into Mexico City considering that's already Mexican League territory. Montreal would be a tough call since Olympic Stadium would need over $200 in renovations and they wouldn't go for a new stadium unless it was all privately funded. I think Charlotte and Buffalo would also be good options as Charlotte is the largest US city without a team and Buffalo's Coca Cola Park allows for future expansion to accommodate a major league team. With Oakland and Tampa Bay's futures uncertain with trying to get new stadiums, relocation would probably happen.

Possibly speaks volumes about the Giants pitching coaching staff and/or Bochy to light a fire under Samardzija's ass even though he has no personal motivation to play better than he did in Oakland and Chicago since he's getting paid a fuckton of money regardless of performance.

Scherzer is far too erratic to win the Cy Young. Dude is some sort of anomaly of a pitcher how he goes from having historically great starts and then has bad or mediocre starts. He can't win the Cy Young when guys like Kershaw, Arrieta, Syndegaard, and Strasberg are being consistently great. Then you have wild cards like Grienke and Bumgarner how could heat up and stay hot the rest of the year.

Basically, the NL pitching scene these days is fucking loaded. I don't know if I've ever seen this many amazing pitchers in one league in my life. Maybe in the early 90's but my baseball memories of my early childhood are pretty hazy at this point.

If one of the best pitchers in the game comes to a front office exec saying "hey this is uncomfortable and I can't throw with it on" and they still push him to wear it you know they're just trying to make a quick buck. Lebron and others did the same exact thing.

White Sox are hovering around .500 but there's still a chance they could make the playoffs if they play well down the stretch, and then you pull this shit? After the whole LaRoche scandal to start the season? Some people need to be fired, shit is just not working in that front office.

I can't pitch as well and that means our chances to win are worsened. You can do 1970's throwback day tomorrow or next week, whatever, just not when I pitch. I'll sit in the dugout wearing the thing, but not while I pitch" and the front office were dicks about it and wouldn't budge so Sale said "Fuck it" and went into the clubhouse and took a knife to the uniforms so the front office couldn't force the players to wear them.

But yeah, seriously, these uniforms are hideous and look uncomfortable as fuck.

OF course owners want to make money, but that still doesn't mean the players don't want to win and that they're jump through hoops and wear uncomfortable shit just so the owners can make money. Major league pitchers, above all others, are creatures of habit, and making them wear something they don't want to for a game will seriously piss them off. You definitely don't want to throw a starting pitcher off their game if you care about winning a game.

Also, you're dead wrong about player's wearing gimmick jerseys making fans keep coming to games. There are only two things that can put fans in the seats and that's a first place team and free giveaways, and when a winning team still doesn't fill up a stadium (like in countless small markets) then it's a free giveaway that will goose the attendance for that single day.

Also that wasn't a picture from this year's game, that was a picture of the same jerseys worn for last year's stupid gimmick jersey day. I posted it for reference, especially so since it shows the team has worn them before so the players would know if they were shitty to wear during a game or not.

acting like such a primadonna about the uniforms that you destroy them before the game so you don't have to wear it is the type of BS that drove fans away after the strike in 94.

the attendance for the rays' game this year when they wore fake throwbacks was higher than the average attendance in the year they were in the world series. the very fact that the rays even have a fake throwback should tell you something, that gimmicks like this grow the game and thus pad the players' wallets.

Fuck's sake, at least google the definition of an outlier before you use it in a sentence. What you said makes no sense.

I doubt you'll understand this since you're acting like a retard for some reason but here goes: What the team wears on the field doesn't matter when it comes to attendance. Giving shit away for free does. Just because you say one game where the Rays wore some goofy jerseys had a higher attendance than the average for when they were a better team literally means fuck all. Stop being such a retard.

Interesting trade deadline deals today, including some non-moves. Anyone's favorite team get better or worse today? I was sad to see the Padres implode like they did while still keeping Preller as GM despite him ruining the team. They weren't a terrible team this year and just needed a few pieces to compete for a WC spot next year, but now that they've unloaded the major league roster and stocked up on a puu-puu platter of prospects then even if their young guys on the roster now continue to improve they have no hope in competing next year, either. The White Sox seem like pretty big losers this year, too, as they didn't get enough to boost them back to a potential division contender now that the Royals are struggling and they didn't unload some contracts for prospects to begin a proper rebuild, either. Also, holy hell, what's going on with the Royals? I guess their starting pitching has been a mess, but still, that's still most of the loaded team they had last year so a sub-.500 finish this year would be absurd.

>Giants trade Matt Duffy, Lucius Fox and Michael Santos for Matt Moore

PANIC

...wait, no, he's still on the team. But really, I'm very scared about this trade. This only works if the Giants saw something in Moore that nobody else did, and honestly, with Samardzija now continuing to break my heart a little more every week, I'm not sure I trust them on pitchers that aren't doing well and supposedly have a shot at regaining their top form.

Though they did dodge the Lincecum bullet. Man, what a sad story that has been.

Moore was great before TJ surgery but he hasn't really gotten back to what he was. I guess the Giants saw something they could help him fix mechanics-wise since they gave up a lot for a non-ace pitcher that's still recovering from TJ surgery. The Giants are sneaky scary this year, though. Too much coverage of the Cubs and Nationals when the Giants could very likely beat either in a 7 game series. Mets are a total wild card, too, since if they can fix their terrible offense then that incredible pitching staff could really carry them in the postseason.

He honestly should be considered the greatest contact hitter ever. He got to 3000 hits in 16 years when he wasn't even a regular player for the past couple of years. Rose and Cobb needed 24 seasons and Jeter has a 4 year advantage on Ichiro but only a 465 hit lead. Also when Ichiro came over to America he fucking murdered pitching right away here, even better than he did in Japan. If he came over to America 5 or 6 years earlier he absolutely would have broken Cobb & Rose's MLB records. As such, you can't give him the MLB record technically, but when he goes into the HOF I hope he's recognized as the greatest contact hitter in the world as a consolation. I also hope he becomes the first unanimous HOF'er because I've never heard a single bad word about the guy, from teammates or the press. Here's hoping his health keeps up and he can finish his career out like an even better Julio Franco and play into his mid to late 40's as a bench guy that can fill-in when injuries strike.

1) The Giants don't make the playoffs, and people can finally shut up about this even year shit.
2) The Giants do make the playoffs, and then they made the playoffs, which is good, because god damn this team does not play like a team that deserves to go to the playoffs right now.

Seriously, what the fuck happened? Did Pagan and Pence fuck with the team chemistry? the pitching lineup was godtier for the first half of the season and then the bats went quiet (of course they were bound to, this is SF we're talking about), but man, I expected a little bit more than this. It's not like the Doyers have done much this year either. If they do make the playoffs I shudder to think what would happen if they meet a hungry Cubs team.

Well it seems like most people (Cueto, Pence who got injured, Belt) decided to play fantastic in the first half, then suck in the second half. Some guys have picked up the slack but not enough to fill the void.
We also overperformed our Pythagorean record and are underperforming it now. I don't really put much stock in that though.
Now Law is hurt and I think the Giants can more or less kiss the division goodbye, but we're still in the wild card race. Still won't be easy to make even that the way they've been playing.

Speaking of Clemente, Fernandez's career is among the Top 3 all-time(!!!) in terms of ERA+, K/9 and Winning Percentage. That 9th inning was nuts. Still, though, it's hard to still root for the Cubs now that they've become the Yankees and are spending an obscene amount of money on a piece of shit like Aroldis Chapman, an all-around fat asshole washed-up jerk like John Lackey, and $80 million dollars strictly for Jason Heyward's glove to the point that they actually removed him from a close game because he's just a fucking horrible hitter now and was too much of a liability on offense that his defensive WAR doesn't make up for his negative offensive WAR. Also Joe Maddon seems like a pompous asshole and Kris Bryant just has to be on so much HGH and roids that he needs to get on Proactiv stat to cover up his roid acne.

Still, though, I guess the Cubs making it to the World Series might be cool. I just don't like this team very much other than Anthony Rizzo, though, who legit seems like a really great dude that unfortunately forgets how to be Anthony Rizzo during the playoffs. I don't see much joy from this team winning the World Series, not like the joy I felt when the White Sox finally won in 2005 and the Blackhawks won in 2010. The 2003 Cubs should have been the ones, not this year's team. :(

That would be fucking nuts considering the injuries to Carrasco, Salazar and Gomes. Usually really good teams that lose so many stars just don't win it. IF they still end up winning it then holy shit at next year's team when healthy.

Also the Giants GM should be fired for whiffing on Andrew Miller at the trade deadline. I guess the Matt Moore trade may have saved his job, but still. What a terrible trade to miss out on. Also thought the Cubs were dumb for getting Chapman instead of Miller, but I guess Chapman has cooled it on the whole threatening women with guns thing so that move turned out to be less risky.

Hard to say, that Indians bullpen is scary good. Cubs bullpen rests on which Chapman shows up. Starting pitching I would give the edge to the Cubs, but the Indians keep making something out of nothing with all of their injuries so who knows. Cubs are very streaky hitters, too, so it's nice to see Rizzo break out of his slump, but his resurgence could mean that other bats could go cold. Fowler seems like the only truly consistent hitter on the team, and Baez is in uncharted waters at this point. For the Indians they have a whole lot of nothing outside of Lindor and Kipnis, but they manage to get big hits when it matters and just enough runs so that their ace pitching keeps them ahead. Should be a fun series, I hope it goes seven. It will also be cool to see all of the old Indians and Cubs for the pre-game festivities. Just a damn shame Ronnie Santo couldn't be here today, though.

Tied 6 to 6, about to start the 10th inning, but they've rolled out the tarps due to rain.

The pitchers on both teams are throwing wild balls like you wouldn't believe, you can feel the tension bursting out of the stadium.

This is a game people are gonna be talking about for a looooong time.

I"m not a huge baseball fan, but damn that was a great game.

Just when you think it's over for the Cubs, they rally back from a 3-1 deficit, and go on to win the WS. It was the definition of a nail-biter as errors were made, Ross redeemed himself, the rain delay and the back and forth. Oh man, what a fight.

The Indians weren't slouches either. Got to give it to both teams.

Not really sure what you were expecting of the Indians' third-best reliever after he had to go about 30 minutes between pitches. Giving up two runs from two bases-loaded scenarios actually wasn't that bad.

I'm still wondering what the hell Hector Rondon said or did to Joe Maddon to make him get benched for the World Series.

And they just traded Danny Espinosa to the Angels, which also being an Angels fan I'm okay with and plus Danny is from Santa Ana so it's close to home. Plus it means Trea Turner can move from outfield to shortstop and Adam Eaton moves into Turner's old position, that is if Eaton ends up being worth it.

Great to see Raines in, much deserved and overdue. Weird to see Posada one-and-done, though. I'm not sure if he's a HOFer or just an almost-there kind of guy like Fred McGriff, but I feel like he deserves the chance to have his case looked at more than one year. I'm pretty salty about Hoffman not getting in, though. Seems like he's a victim of those clowns that vote for position players on their favorite teams instead of deserving guys or because of unrequited grudges. Oh well, Biggio got dicked-over by this a few years ago and then got in the next year so Hoffman seems like a lock next year. I read some writers say that Billy Wagner was a better closer than Hoffman, which is wacky, but Wagner only got about 10% of the vote, so that's that I guess. Wild to see Sammy Sosa still eke in to next year's ballot, too. I wonder if he'll get a boost in voting once Bonds and Clemens get in a couple of years from now.

Posada is an almost-there kind of guy and I can see Todd Helton also falling under that same category. Hoffman will eventually get in though guys like Sosa, Bonds and Clemens will take a very long time to get in if they ever do given their association with steroids and stuff.

Here's hoping this year's WBC is a success because the games have been pretty entertaining despite so many of the best players not playing in the tournament. Damn, White Sox just got the Cubs' top two prospects for Jose Quintana. If everything works out then in a couple years the White Sox are going to have a lot of great young players on their roster a la the Astros.

Cubs are still going to miss the playoffs and finish under .500 this year, though. Hopefully they fire Maddon because of it but Ricketts seems too much of a softee to fire Maddon so quickly even though a young team has seriously regressed and that's the absolute worst thing that can happen to a group of young players (they're supposed to get better as they enter their prime or plateau, not get exponentially worse across the board). Maddon bugs me because he manages like a laissez-faire parent of a "gifted" kid, where they think everything will sort itself out if they just stay positive and let the kid do their own thing, but then the kid hits high school and peer pressure along with hormones gradually screw the kid up except their parent isn't there to straighten them out so they don't fail before getting to the finish line because they're a goddamn lazy hippy asshole. That's Joe Maddon, he needs to straighten up this group of young players, punish them for mistakes, and work them hard to help them develop and refine their skillsets, but instead he manages like a stupid asshole and lets them get thrown out on the basepaths for stupid, risky decisions, doesn't get on them for terrible defensive decisions in the field that costs the team runs, and terrible batting decisions with runners in scoring position (which the team ranks near the bottom of the league).

Adrian Beltre with a sneaky 3000 hits. I remember seeing him come up with the Dodgers in what feels like another lifetime ago. I never really thought of him as a future HOFer, just a solid player, but he's quietly put together a HOF career so good on him. He's still playing very good at 38, too, so if he plays a couple more years he could possibly get to 500 HR's, too.

The Tigers announced they won't bring Brad Ausmus back as manager following this season. I'm pretty surprised by this. Ausmus had huge shoes to fill after Leyland and with Leyland's team he still finished in first in his first year, but since then the management has gutted his pitching and this year they had a fire sale and got rid of all of his offense along with his last good pitcher. Seems like he got a short shrift from management that didn't give him a 1st place team on the field when they expected Ausmus to manage a 1st place team.

Terry Collins is retiring at the end of the season, too, so that puts the Mets in even murkier waters in the offseason. I remember two years ago thinking that with their incredible young pitching staff and their offense being bolstered by the acquisition of Cespedes that the Mets would be a perennial Pennant-chaser for the next five years. But then David Wright's body completely fell apart, then their pitching arms broke down, and their ace closer got busted for PED's. If the team can stay healthy next year and add some offense in the offseason then I think there's a chance they could compete for the NL Wildcard with a core of Syndegaard and DeGrom in the rotation, a clean Familia closing out games, and an offense of Cespedes, Conforto and an decent acquisition. The Nationals seem like a juggernaut, though, so unless similar bad luck hits them next season then I think they're the new toast of the town and will be ruling the NL East for the next few years.

Dusty's a far, far better manager than Matt Williams. Nationals got snakebit this year with a million injuries, including losing like their entire starting outfield at various points. The injuries to Harper and Scherzer at the end of the season were terrible, too, since neither guy was 100% for the series. If the Nationals had Strasberg and Scherzer for 1-2 and 4-5 they would have won the series, possibly in 4, because besides Game 5 the Cubs hitting was anemic.

Dodgers-Cubs should be interesting. Dodgers should paste the Cubs, but if the Cubs can stop seriously underachieving they can make things interesting. The Cubs' rotation should be better than the Dodgers' with Arrieta, Lester, Hendricks, and Quintana versus the Dodgers' Kershaw, Darvish, whatever's left of Hill, and Alex Wood on the verge of turning back into a pumpkin, but if they can't score any runs then they'll get trounced.
