This has been happening every damn day, would switching to Google DNS or something else fix it?

>Oh, sweet summer child. You are now aware that you know next to nothing about your VPN provider's management, the people they hire,
>and the data centers they do business with.

There are corporations that have to rely on commercial VPN services as well other services. A bit more expensive but, they need to rely on their data to be secure.
You have to understand which services are proven to be reliable. Plenty of reviews out there what have shown to be flawed at the time they were tested. My service
gets high reviews, kind of expensive, but I do know a fatal flaw that dnsleaktest.com will say, no issues. But I can patch that. But again it is the highest ranking service
by cnet, etc. Again it has a flaw that dns leak tests will say no issues.

>You can cut out some of the middle men and set up your own VPN service, but the trust problem is intractable.

Any way you look at it there would have to be a middle man. Service is needed to accomplish these either way.

OpennDns, DnsCrypt. Proven better than ISPs servers. Faster browsing. Cannot log
sites you visit. Well difficult with opendns, basically impossible with dnscrypt.

Who needs government, that is what this is really all about, having ISPs by default record sites one visits by their IP address. Make their control less
capable by using encryption. Dns, Vpn, etc,

Just moved country, main rig isnt booting and don't know why, so in the meantime I've beefed up a spare rig well beyond the specs which the case is designed for.

Too many drives to fit? Extra drives chilling out the back of the case seated on books

Too many fans? Added fan controller and gaffa taped fans in place (case has space of only one tiny fan...) and left the case wall off

Tell me how to do that but please dont trick me into setting my laptop on fire, I live in poverty and eat nothing but potatos and who knows when I find another computer from the recycle bin.

Picture only for reference, its not my catalyst center because my catalyst center refuses to open at the moment for some reason.

What to do with ~$500 dollars: upgrade old PC or buy a PS4 Pro? by DavidGemmertidge.bas - Sat, 09 Jun 2018 11:35:32 EST ID:XDzQfX5P No.121835 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

So I could throw an i5 4460 (would rather 4670 but i don't see any new for less than $350), a GTX 1050 ti 4G and 8GB ram in my 3+ year old mid-range build which would let me run modern games at 1080p a lot better (currently have a GTX 660 2GB, one of the i3 at 3.40 and only 8GB ram) for about $500. Or I could buy a PS4 Pro 1TB and a few games for that same amount.

It's E3 and tomorrow is also June 10th which is Amazon Prime day, and I've got a $100 gift card at Amazon that I've been sitting on. So potentially, there could be even better deals on components/consoles tomorrow. I'm stuck because I really can't afford to do both. My PC is running fine but upgrading it would let me play some games in my Steam library at much better framerates that I've been waiting to play for a bit, but I'd also like to play some of the Playstation exclusives and the Pro seems like it would be a nice living room fixture for the next 5 years or so...

Not sure where to go, I'm leaning towards the PC upgrade but it is probably going to depend on tomorrow's deals.

Thoughts?

maybe if i had an option of where to buy and could shop around for used parts that were certified tested it would be a different story, but the only reason i'm looking to spend any money is because of the sales and the $100 gift card i have at Amazon, and the only used 4670's on there are from random users and i'm not sure what the return policy would even be. maybe at some point i'll be that guy who buys a bunch of cheap refurbished PCs all the time and harvests the parts, but i really don't have the storage space for that right now.

Buy the video card on Amazon and look on ebay to see what used CPU and RAM is going for. If you buy something on ebay and it doesn't work, you get a refund minus return shipping and ebay will always side with the buyer.

Well if used CPUs that have been tested are okay (i've never bought one used), Amazon has some options too, and some of the sellers have high satisfaction ratings with 1000+ sales... so maybe it would be fine? I mean this 4670k for about $150 is pretty tempting...

I'll have to check ebay too.

Not only are used CPUs okay, but performance increases are such small increments these days that they're really good value.

If you can catch an enterprise level CPU dump wave you can pick up SERIOUSLY beefy old 2011v1 or 2011v2 Xeon CPUs that kick ass and have a shitload of cores.

The trick is just to get in on it before the motherboards run out. At some point I was considering it. The unlocked 12 core xeons were 80 bucks a pop but the dual socket motherboard to match it was over $450. I was a little late.

yeah, i ended up getting a 4670k for about $170 and a new GTX 1060. I don't have a 1440p monitor or anything so I should be set for awhile. Pretty stoked to throw them in, should be here in a couple of days.

Thanks for the advice /tech/, I honestly wouldn't have even thought to go for a used CPU had I not checked in here first.

I have bought some PNP transistors. I had this theory that because NPN transistors are normally open until you apply a positive current to the "base", that PNP transistors would be normally closed until you applied current to the "base. OH BOY I WAS WRONG!

This leads into my question. I want a device that will stay in a closed state until I apply current to a base (or equivalent). I don't want to use relays for this because they require 12v to run and I already have another relay in my circuit (so no no to more relays). Instead I want a hacky chad solution to my problem. I would prefer to stick to something that is solid state, which won't add too much resistance to my first relay.

what if I just use a transistor that short circuits the whole circuit so it forces the other wires to get bypassed and thus stop current from running through them? would that be a good idea?

PNP transistors and NPN transistors are very simple devices. They work the same, except one requires a ground at the base, while the other requires a positive voltage. What you want is a NOT gate, here is a simple one using NPN transistors.

The idea is, the input transistor draws all the power away from the secondary transistor to stop the secondary transistor from conducting.

I bought a couple of non-working mid-2007 apple macs for £20 thinking oh I'll just fix these up and sell them on.

Then I realised I have no idea what I'm doing.

I opened the fuckers up to realise whoever had them first took the hard drives out. No problem, I've got some spares I can replace in. I put a single partition on the drive. I boot an OS X 10.6 install disk and I get this error.

No idea why, it's an apple mac and it's an OS X. I feel it should just go ahead and install to the drive. Can anyone give me any pointers?

I’ve been out of the loop and without a desktop for about 5-6 years, and I’m expecting a windfall in the coming months. I’m done dabbling with os modding, multibooting, hardware kajiggery (except ram, drives), etc. and just want to game and Internet with the occasional graphic design and a/v editing dabbles.

What do y’all recommend in the $500-1500 (usd) range?

Yeah, apparently a large factory in Malaysia or something, making ram for multiple companies, covering like 80% of the world caught fire and it was so bad that it caused memory to jump up in price. A factory flooded by a typhoon caused the same thing to happen to hard drives back in 2009-2011, I remember how ridiculous it was. Suddenly 500GB's were back to 130-140(cad).

The 4 Corsair 4gb DDR3 sticks I have right now...the first 2 I paid when I built my main desktop and chose every single piece cost me 65cad and now they're worth 80-100 dollars. It's shit, and Trump's tariff bullshit likely won't help but it'll come back to what it used to be more or less. Seems ALMOST like they do it on purpose to rake it in insurance wise and the higher prices following it by having almost everything concentrated in a few factories. Idiots, I remember the desktop I built back in 2000, most pieces came from France and Germany and the high quality headphones I bought with were from Russia. You'd never see this right now.
