A while ago I paid a few bucks for a year of VPN service and now that I'm trying to activate it I see that it's some proprietary app bullshit that doesn't support OpenVPN. If that doesn't bother you, it's yours:

Is there an optimizer that will stop windows 10 drivers from assigning my entire goddamn memory space to the non-paged pool and doing nothing wiht it?

This has been going on for 3 months.

And why the fuck does the start menu/search bar not pop up like, a third of the time I hit the button?

Why the fuck is a quarter of my memory in the non-paged pool, which should normally be like, 80-300 megabytes? I'm not getting SMBLoris'd or anything. This is just my goddamn computer.

AND WHY IN THE FUUUUUUUUUUCK does the suite of tools from microsoft that allows developers to debug drivers in the non-paged memory pool break features of Visual Studio that developers need? I can't even inspect this shit because of that.

Windows 10 is at least twice as much of a shitshow as it was when it came out. This is the opposite of progress.

>You're getting so many new features though
...That I didn't want. Fuck off, microsoft shill strawman in my head.

Wait, RAM booster as in shitty program a site wants you to download, or as in a feature some motherboard makers advertise?

If it's a program it's junk. It just allocates large amounts of memory and then frees it, forcing everything else out to swap. Then only the stuff that's needed gets loaded back in. This used to help in some cases in Win98 when memory management was shit. But today Windows memory management is good and all it will do is chug your disk a while.

If you mean the motherboard feature, it may help some. It's a BIOS function that overclocks the RAM automatically when you run it. It tweaks the clock speed and timings to try to find the fastest stable values for your RAM. The boost is often pretty modest but ymmv.

I actually installed the Windows driver toolkit to check the memory pool out.

>>121463
Nope.
And even if it were, that still wouldn't go to the non-paged pool. It would be in the paged pool, not getting paged for lack of space.

Anyway all the FMic and Irp tags tell me is that this leak is coming from some sort of network driver allocating buffers and never releasing them.

So that part where I said I wasn't getting SMBloris'd? Well proliferating orphan network buffers is how that exploit could run servers with 128gb entirely out of memory.

It could be any of the half dozen physical or virtual network drivers on my system.

I have a video card that I use.
Will it hurt anything if i turn my motherboard's "video out" on?

I want to plug my PC to my big TV but the HDMI on my video card is messed up.

Will it hurt anything like using too much power of put too much demand on the cpu if I turn the motherboard's video out on?

I also have two monitors on my video card already.

it depends on the motherboard. some allow it, others (usually older ones) don't.
search for your motherboard's manual on the web.
and no it won't blow up or anything if you plug both when it's not supported. you just won't get a signal for one of your screens.

Worst case, you'll have no video and need to move your cable to the other output to get to BIOS setup and revert the change.

Enabling integrated can be used to add more monitors, or to give you a way to access the host system while PCI-passthroug-hing your real GPU to a VM, or to use QuickSync to encode video if it's a recent Intel CPU.

>That's not how these ISP warning emails work. They emails come from your ISP but they do not originate there. There isn't someone watching and when you hit X amount you get an email.

uploads is what they are more concerned with. Say one has 80% upload speed with ten of the newest movies albums, without unlimited peers for weeks on end and in the end they manage to have uploaded a few of terabytes thate gets notice. The EFF on lawsuits explains to not upload files from your computer.
A quick downwload of 3 gigs at 3MBs and 15 kbs up minimizing peers and speeds for uploads (sharing)
one may have uploaded maybe 75 kbs by the time the 3 gig file is done.

Sharing uploads is more resource intensive and that in the past created throttling.

>A torrent gets tagged, whatever company it is sends out notices to the ISP and then the ISP sends you the warning email(HBO and Disney are particularly bad about this). Not all ISPs will send them but most do. Regardless your DL speed and whether or not you upload has nothing to do with it.

The more you upload the more $$$ the industry see as a loss. Limiting peers and speeds to near nothing
will barely see a loss. If one is downloading and uploading the same file at the same time that is a little bit more easily identifiable. A quick download and barely uploading 50 kbs will likely not be noticed.
Sure people have gotten warnings for downloading a file, but as well they almost certainly were uploading at the same time and left the file to be uploading 244/7.

Since everyone is talking like a fag and their shit's all retarded, i'm just going to give you the straight dope, OP. Check out cryptostorm, it's a VPN(or encrypted packet routing service, as they like to call themselves) that makes use of "access tokens" that are sold in a decentralized manner, and also decouples your payment information from your authentication with SHA512 hashing. They don't require anything but a payment, no billing information, no registration, no databases of customers, no logging, no bullshit either. Been using them since their inception and i've had nothing but incredible speeds and some pretty great security on their end.

tl;dr: Every device using WPA2 is attackable and has to be updated. Good luck with that. Ethernet Jesus related.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/10/severe-flaw-in-wpa2-protocol-leaves-wi-fi-traffic-open-to-eavesdropping/

>Researchers have disclosed a serious weakness in the WPA2 protocol that allows attackers within range of vulnerable device or access point to intercept passwords, e-mails, and other data presumed to be encrypted, and in some cases, to inject ransomware or other malicious content into a website a client is visiting.

>The proof-of-concept exploit is called KRACK, short for Key Reinstallation Attacks. The research has been a closely guarded secret for weeks ahead of a coordinated disclosure that was scheduled for 8am Monday, East Coast time. A website disclosing the vulnerability said it affects the core WPA2 protocol itself and is effective against devices running Android, Linux, and OpenBSD, and to a lesser extent macOS and Windows, as well as MediaTek Linksys, and other types of devices. The site warned that attackers can exploit the flaw to decrypt a wealth of sensitive data that's normally encrypted by the nearly ubiquitous Wi-Fi encryption protocol.

>"This can be abused to steal sensitive information such as credit card numbers, passwords, chat messages, emails, photos, and so on," researcher Mathy Vanhoef, of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium wrote. "The attack works against all modern protected Wi-Fi networks. Depending on the network configuration, it is also possible to inject and manipulate data. For example, an attacker might be able to inject ransomware or other malware into websites."

Reality is openssl has updates consistantly. Vulnearabilites that could be exploited under 'certain circimstances.' But mostly mere possibilities. The beartbleed issue was really just another day in the park, with a large crowd that was very exploiatable. Asdministrators had to Revertt backk to a previous version, leave open, and or apply a patched version when accessable.

This wpa issue is very very, troublesome. Nodody in as many yearsexpected an exploit that good ol wpa2 that was thought to be basically secure, to be very insecure by this point.

I just bought a new laptop with windows 10. The OS is using like 20 gigs plus and yet still to do basic things I need to download programs off the internet. For example, I'd like to just reassign or disable my num lock key. It is right next to the delete button and I keep hitting it and I will literally never want my number pad to not be functional which happens often because I keep hitting the num lock key.

Now to do this I'm finding that I have to download some program. Now all the sites I go to seem sketchy as fuck and I get hits from malware blockers that redirect me away from some of them. I've seen sites that are named suspiciously similar to the official site for some project boosted higher in google results, review sites that push suspicious looking downloads and all sorts of high jinks.

I should be able to go to some site where windows has approved software that is virus free, but the windows store has nothing that will do even this basic task.

How do I ensure that what I download is from a legitimate malware-free source?

So, I get my internet as part of my unlimited data cell phone plan, using my phone as a wifi hotspot and picking it up with my pc. But where I live I get shit cell reception. Mountains and all that.

Before anyone suggests I change how I get the internet, I live out in bumfuck egypt and there is no cable, no dsl, no wifi. This is my only choice other than satellite plans with unacceptable data caps. So it's this or go back to dial up.

Anyway, I figured that maybe if i could get more than two bars in the room where my computer is, my download speeds would improve.

I have heard of various signal booster products, like on amazon, with a greatly varying price range, so I thought I would ask people on a tech board about it.

Have any of you ever had to solve this problem for yourselves, and how did you do it? Did you buy a signal booster, and how well did it work? Was it worth the money, and easy to install and use?

At the moment, I'm pretty new to wireless, wi-fi, cell phones, and high speed internet in general, unfortunately, and I gotta start somewhere.

The best solution would be a high gain antenna mounted on the outside aligned with the cell phone tower that gives you the best reception.

First get the opensignal app for your phone and find out the best reception on the locations you could mount an antenna and the direction of the cell tower you are connected to at this point.
Then get a 4g modem with with an external antenna bnc connector and a high gain 4g antenna.
I'd look for "4g antenna" on aliexpress (I never buy electronics from amazon if it's a Chinese product any way)
If you don't know which one to buy go on sort by orders and get the most popular one.

While I do know some of that basic stuff, I really do appreciate seeing someone explain beginner stuff without derision. Too many people act like pricks nowadays just because someone else doesn't yet know what they know, especially online, so it's nice to see you and the other posters in this thread not doing that shit. I've been having a shitty day, and that fact lessens it a bit.

And yeah, even when I'm getting the worst download speed I typically get, it's still way better than when I was using dial up. The dial up here was terrible, like, "you're pleased to get 8kb/s on a download" terrible.

>>121376
Videos, Steam stuff, mods, you name it. I'd like to live as what has become a normal person, with the ability to buy games digitally, keep my games and other software updated, get instructions for and answer questions about things online while the situation is still relevant. Maybe even play online multiplayer on occasion.

Sometimes I do watch or download youtube stuff at low res, but sometimes a lot is lost in the lowering of the detail.

Anyway, my main thing is that Verizon has me for around $80 a month, and after my 15gb limit on 4g speeds for mobile hotspot data, i'm supposed to be getting downgraded to ~600kb/s download speed, which would be ok, if I actually got that. The best I get is around 100-120kb/s. Since it's my only real choice, I'm just looking to more get my money's worth out of it.

Depends on your router. Clients is likely how many devices are connected to your computer. Your connection, a smartphone, her connection.

Try this is your router like way out dated. you can check the 'build version'. If it's out dated you can flash an updated version which is basically easy. Often just pressing a button to update on some routers.

The 'port scan' may just be some random nothing. https://www.grc.com/shieldsup to see if any ports are open on your computer. It's as basic a start as you can get to start. If all is green then it should be cool.

numbers like 209.143.252.20 are IP addresses. This would translate to quaker.com

What router do you have? poke around. Get a newer router. Most routers can translate like above so you can see what addresses are being accessed.

damn that's a cool mural for the salvation army...that's pretty brilliant...compensate for the apparently downtrodden appearance of homeless people by having a pretty awesome mural
