Crowd funding warning signs:

"Preorder" now or pay a lot more later

Also it's Indigogo while the scope of the project would pay for Kickstarter many times over.

There's a video for the T0-Prototype out:

Apparently T2 is coming sometime in April, and they're hoping to have it ready to ship/launch/sell in June. The comparison between the CPUs as far as I can tell is just to show functionality, not a direct speed/hardware comparison.

The thing about the preorder or pay more now later is the most interesting aspect I think. Do I drop the moolah now, or wait it out until they become cheaper later in the year? Is it going to be a limited run and thus rare? Can I justify dropping $409 on something when better specced items exist? Am I paying purely for the gimmick of it just being an ultra-portable?

Then there are the tech questions: Can I dual boot an Android partition on this? Could I USB/BlueTooth tether a dumbphone to it to enable net access on the go (obviously phone plan dependant), so that I can finally cast off my smartphone?

Shut up. It's there to make it look like a real laptop and not the netbook that it is. They even dug up the corpse of "UMPC", a term that hasn't seen the light of day since netbooks became hot. How old are you that you don't know cynical advertising when you see it?

Looks like they mounted a small bluetooth keyboard to a small tablet.

Good riddance, so the innovation here is how to come up with a hinge mechanism to mount those two parts together.

I heard about this about a month ago and preordered the linux version because it happened to be the exact thing I was looking for. I'm considering moving to a dumbphone and just using this.

This company delivered with the GPD Win [pictured] like a year ago, so I think it's a pretty safe bet. I actually found this device because I found the GPD Win first and was looking up whether you could install linux.

I'll let you know how well it works out if this thread isn't dead by the time it gets shipped (or turns to vapor, lol)

> Looks like they mounted a small bluetooth keyboard to a small tablet.

Which is basically what I was looking for, plus something that wouldn't require backflips to install a regular distro on. I don't think they were pretending to be innovative, they were just being cheap hardware from Shenzhen.

thanks man, that'd be appreciated. i may just go ahead and take the plunge anyway. i've been wanting to learn how to use linux for years now, and something like this seems like a pretty nice way of having something that I could just slip in my pocket and figure out on the go

I get you but I imagine it would be incredible frustrating trying to learn anything on that tiny thing. You'll need a fullsize pc to look up stuff constantly.

People have been at it for 40 years and nobody has yet figured out how to make a keyboard of that size decent. I think the first step toward an ultraportable real computer is a 60/70% bluetooth mechanical keyboard but that's just like my opinion man.

>bluetooth keyboard
Yeah, that sure is a good idea. Man... have you ever used a wireless keyboard? Especially a bluetooth one? Anything can interfere with the shitty ass signal, when you're playing a game, signal gets lost for 1 millisecond, you're pressing W and your character stops in game and you die.

The sister system (gpdwin) plays lots of older games.. It's the whole reason for the system. Here's a few games playing on it: https://youtu.be/fNiWwza_I_I

I'll probably load New Vegas. I doubt grand strategies will scale the gui well on it, but maybe some rim world. I'll let you know how it works out.
NicholasSirrynot.cbl - Fri, 31 Mar 2017 19:10:10 EST ID:PUbnWT1r No.120827 Ignore Report Quick Reply
well that was just an example, in general bluetooth keyboards suck because the signal is lost so easily for a moment and that stops your flow in typing too.
CharlesNorringwater.avi - Fri, 31 Mar 2017 19:22:03 EST ID:qaJ3iinO No.120829 Ignore Report Quick Reply
New Vegas will run like garbage.

I think you mean cheap bluetooth keyboards and low power devices. Some things just aren't fit for purpose.

Gpdwin runs it at 30-40fps at 720p. Not perfect, but I'm not really a big dick gamer, I just fuck around.

Unfortunately for the smaller backers, GPD's not a great shipping center and the single orders are shipping slower than the big batches. Also, it seems like they're still fiddling with Ubuntu trying to get it working.

Seemed like they stopped shipping for a bit because a lot of the early shipped units had build-quality issues. I think they were trying to fix those, but it's hard to tell because they haven't been communicating great.

Sounds like the biggest flaw for the system (that isn't just a loose connection during the build) is the wifi. People are saying it's pretty crap. We'll see.

I've got a 10" iWork tablet, similar specs (3gb RAM instead of 8GB but otherwise pretty much the same) and the keyboard attachment, cost me about $300 NZD, the GPD pocket would cost $840 NZD, so like 500$ more for a device a bit smaller. What's the point??

Ubuntu version starts shipping friday. Apparently they mostly just used the community's work after the windows versions were released. Devs seem slightly irritated with GPD. The guy who implemented fixes to the kernel asked for one to develop on and they denied him.

Finally got mine. It's a pretty handy little device. Keyboard wasn't quite as hard to get used to as I thought. You're not going to transcribe at full speed on it, but I'm able to type as fast as I can code, which is fine.

I was lucky to get one shipped at the end of the run. I don't have any of the quirks except the weak wifi antenna, which seems to be universal.

They shipped me the Windows one by accident, but I installed the community's Ubuntu spin, and it runs like a dream.
