I've had a Galaxy S5 for about a year now and its done me great up until a few days ago. the screen is cracked as well as majorly fucking up.

I dont need such a big phone that isnt comfortable to use with one hand. I'm looking for something with a smaller screen with the same performance or greater than the s5. something that isnt slow in 2017 and can handle everyday apps just fine for around $200

What would you guys reccomend? and is the iPhone 5s still good today for the money?

If you're getting a smartphone, get an iPhone for better security.

LOL
thats the point. iPhones are good, but they're ridiculously bad for the money.

Really want a small phone? Buy a used iPhone 5S or SE but definitely try one out first because 4 inches is tiny. Want a cheap sidegrade? Buy a used Nexus 5 or LG G3. Want something comparable and new and/or small for $200? Doesn't exist.

They're also $700 unsubsidized.

I save $35 a month by using an old Galaxy S4 out of contract it cost me 85 bucks. Probably the oldest bitchin' phone you can get. No official VR support but the screen is still nice.

If you up your budget by about 30 bucks you can get a ZTE Blade v8 Pro which has pretty good specs for the price.
Dual camera so you can take bokeh pics (if you're into that)
good processor,
3GB ram
8MP front camera
compatible with 5GHz wifi (AC)

I was gonna buy it, but alas ZTE locked the bootloader so there's no way to root, which is a deal breaker for me.

But if you don't care about that it's a damn good phone for the price.

That is just part of the stock android options, but it seems ZTE has locked access when trying to use adb commands to unlock the bootloader for rooting, as no root is available.

I will direct you to this xda thread
