I'm trying to install windows xp on an old laptop (why xp? the laptop is 10 years old and licensed for xp.)

The install disc I had keeps asking for a license key, and rejects the one on the sticker on the bottom of the computer. So I torrented one, but it's in Russian (lucky I understand Russian, but I'd prefer English since I'm giving the computer to my wife) and fails when copying the files to .

Then I found that the first install disc I tried stopped booting. Jeez. I'm starting to remember why I went to Linux.

Can anyone suggest a good way to install some kind of windows XP? Is ReactOS good enough yet? I seem to remember there was some kind of cracked version which was like what Linux folks call a distro? Basically I have no idea what I'm doing.

The XP version has to be the correct version for the key. Or you can use a cracked version of XP Corporate or whatever. Or better yet, set the laptop on fire and get a better one that can run Windows 7.

it was really weird system by Microsoft
big OEMS (Dell, HP, Gateway etc) basically used a volume license key for each model. basically the key was on the CD, but was locked to that model (it checks against the BIOS, and automatically activates). you couldn't use that XP CD on another model or another computer (it'd install, but ask you to type a key for activation). the key on the sticker is a different one, and was just yours. if you lost your CD, you could activate using the sticker key by calling Microsoft.

tl;dr
find the specific model of the laptop and find the CD that works with it (reasonably they're like 10 bucks, but some jerks may sell them for 20 or 25). no activation needed. otherwise call MS (if it's a legit key on the sticker they'll activate it for you).

what's the brand and model of your laptop btw?

I've used this cd key so many time that I'm writing this from memory. It should work; it's worked on every copy of xp I've ever installed.

Update the bios, then see if you can get at least two gigs on it, (which is likely) one is fine. Put win 7 pro on it. Ten years may seem like a long time but it's really not, you can easily squeeze win 7 on it and if you can get updated drivers, it should be pretty snappy.

Google your model and ram and that will tell you your current ability of max ram. Google the model and the website, dell, etc. Find drivers for win7 if they have updated to win 7.

As well if win7 installs you can use win update optional installs and look for the updates
for your computers hardware in the first entries.-

x64 winxp pro is the most refined stable xp system. Run in a vm. It only comes in service pack 2 as an service pack update. It was short lived. If they had only had win xp as stable from the beginning.

Wasn't xp64 a brutally incompatible reskinning of 64bit windows server?

It's very much Server 2003: XP edition. The reason it's so awkward is that 64-bit x86 was an uncertain thing in the early 2000s because Intel wanted to protect its Itanium margins.
