I am looking for a cheap laptop / notebook only for surfing, reading, watching porn occasionally.

Can you recommend anything?

Any free OS that is easy to learn, even for a windows-fag?

What this guy said. Or if you insist on new, and don't care about privacy, chromebooks come pretty cheap.

I remember those crank computers. Wonder if they ever did any good or if they just ended up in landfills.

I'm partial to the Elitebook 2570p. Shit TN screen, great price.

The hand crank was just a concept. A robust crank that won't fall to pieces is actually pretty expensive. As for what became of the laptops, they sold a few million and as far as I know never produced a tangible result beyond anecdotes.

dell inspiron 1150 Manufactured 1996? Is pretty reliable 2 gigs ram max. Do update the BIOS.

Some may bla bla bla about mentioning this. But worst case, the graphics for are not totally like a brand new computer. But from every one I have had, the graphics are pretty crisp. Porn? Depends? I never use flash, Javascript. So move files to the computer. Web sites that are porn orientated may be a bit busy, maybe move fiels From another computer.

I would sell get One for 30 bucks, especially if It had at least 1.5 gigs ram.

If short from the max 2 gig ram, the ram can be expensive. 30 bucks a GIG module. But 1.5 gigs do well. even native 512 mb. Plenty of 32 bit linux operating systems will just function on this system. I have squeezed win 7 on it. No problem. But a nice smaller linux system would fare far better. Not all would work without some tweaking. People will automatically say, Use ubuntu based system, yeaa, maybe. There are other systems out there, some minimal systems, Slackware. whatever.

not to shit on everyone here, Refurb chromebook.

Get a newer one, update to the beta so you can do the VM linux program shell.

Its basically a super slick and easy to use Gentoo OS with native android App support now.

You want the VM thing for things like fitbits or other small weird things that will either require 1.Wine for windows things or 2. Native linux apps (Like wine).

  1. Easy as shit adblock
  2. Almost virus free PC
  3. Always updates automaticly
  4. if you dont trust google you can always install chromium OS without any google after some tinkering.
  5. Sub $400 for like an i7 PC
  6. possible OLEDs
  7. Netflix and pornhub apps both work and have native video download/saving to USB.

thats all I got

That is actually so much better than the hand crank in all ways. How did the footpedal charger not make more of a splash?

Is mint/cinnamon still good? It used to be the hip new thing and now people don't really mention it as much. Does it still have a lot of development energy?

Mint is as good as ever. I don't know that Cinnamon ever had a lot of development energy, but they're still adding features. I would say that Manjaro has displaced Mint as the hip mainstream distro, but Mint is what I would install on a laptop if I were giving it to someone.

Used Unibody MacBook pro with an SSD upgrade from eBay.
Make sure to have at least 256G and 8GB
~300

Burn me at the stake. But you all know that this would last longer then any equivalently priced netbook/chromebook/2-in-1

  1. You're not going to get a Macbook Pro with an SSD for 300 unless there's something wrong with it.
  2. The build quality on Macs is atrocious. Good materials and quality control, but a long history of bad design decisions. I wouldn't bet on a used Macbook to be any less flakey than a used Acer.

You can, it just takes some effort, spend 10 minutes looking for auctions and buy it nows. I got one 2 years ago for that amount 256GB/8GB 13 inch, core duo (don't complain, if all you're doing is the stuff OP listed)
Granted it had one rubber foot missing and no power supply. Not a big deal.

Point 2 is ideological stuff, if you don't like apple ok. I don't either.
There is actually a reason why used macbooks are pretty good: Often they aren't somebodies main machine and hence don't see heavy use.

IIRC it was 350 and a new cloned power supply was 50, but ok.

There are no 13 inch MBPs or Macbooks with Core Duos. Whatever you bought, you got taken. 350+50 is 33% more than you said and 100% more than I paid for my gently used T430.

>There is actually a reason why used macbooks are pretty good: Often they aren't somebodies main machine and hence don't see heavy use.
Except that it isn't abuse that renders Macs unusable. It's design flaws, as comprehensively covered by noted scholar and gentleman Louis Rossman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUaJ8pDlxi8

k cool... I just wanted to make sure that Mint wasn't just something we keep recommending out of habit. I was beginning to wonder if no one actually used it, or if they just recommend it.

What advantages does it give over Ubuntu at this point, now that Ubuntu has gone more mainline?

The Dell e7440 or 7240 are good. Ultrabook. Good for porn, you can't lose! It's a win-win.

Touch screen. Optional.
