Werewolf the Apocalypse or Werewolf the Foresaken? by Caroline Lighthall - Sun, 05 Jul 2015 16:27:07 EST ID:F5P7OV4I No.27626 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Starting a tabletop gaming crew at my work. Looking into World of Darkness for our first game, most likely Werewolf, because who doesn't fucking love werewolfs right?!

Which system is more preferable? Foresaken or Apocalypse?
Which is more streamlined?

its a better system.

I kind of wish they would take the system from Forsaken, take the Background from Apocolypse and do a mash up knowing now what we do about "Grimdark" settings and what their general appeal is, and just generally make werewolves a lot more morally ambiguous and subtly evil.

Like really, just take out all that shit about dominatrixes and lay it squarely on the Furies, cause that is where it fucking belongs. Show people how fucking creepy it can get. Basically 90% of the behavior they accuse the Black Spiral Dancers of doing they are themselves guilty of.

They kidnap kids, put them through dangerous trials, induct them into their ideology, then either release them back to their parents like a terrorist cell member on standby or they end up migrating and running with a garou pack.

That shit sounds pretty fucking hardcore to me. But in the context of D&D, and not the "real world" people do fucked up shit all the time. They already have things like the kobold dellema, i.e. killing the children of the "monsters" you killed. People in D&D do fucked up shit all the time without even thinking about the consequences. Hell, I even threatened to cut off a kobolds balls once, I stood by and watched helplessly while my party slaghtered them. I couldnt' bring myself to participate, it just felt too real to me, like somehow it struck a chord.

What I'm saying is that players need a reason to reign it in a little, and the best system for doing that is with reknown. Make a big deal out of the scar rituals and the tribal tats and the benefits of having high reknown. You gotta make them feel proud of themselves, like their characters accomplishments mean something.

You need to develop a committment to a character and an investment in the setting. Like having a wood etching of the garou's marks that you carved yourself, made out of polished wood. I'm not sure about say, laquer, but turtle wax or something maybe. (Like the kind people use for their cars)

The point is, you need things like props, funny voices, strange modes of speech. You need things like music to produce the atmosphere but it needs to be ambient, sort of hidden in the background.

I used to like bands that contained a lot of political lyrics, but I realized that they are immersion breaking at the table, people are too busy listening to the lyrics and the rythyms. They are either getting too into it or its turning them off.

Anyone up for a game? Or maybe the modern internet version as that works quite well despite using "the tubes" instead of "the tube". Anyone up for a round of "420chan"?

The following house rules would be in play.

>Home is 420chan
>You can take one move per day or two on a friday if you're in at home but no double posts
>Commentary and historical significance of moves encouraged
>Search engines are not wild, no deep web, one proxy per game allowed

Anyone up for a few games? Start us us off somewhere distant please.

meant to say, right now i'm just starting out at low stakes tournaments (<$100 buy in). I've done well 4 times out of roughly 30-40 attempts so i'm far from a winning player (got 1st once, cashed another time and had 2 final tables). Working on my game by reading up, playing some home games, and trying to spot my weaknesses.

Not really comfortable shelling out a $300-$500 buyin for 1/3 or 2/5 NL cash game at a casino so I'll probably be a tourny player for a while. Really hoping online poker gets legalized in washington but it doesnt seem like it'll happen any time soon.

How is your game?

I'd suggest learning short stacking, if you can buy in for 25BB or less you could build roll on those cash games fairly easily, especially if people buyin big and are loose.

As for me still playing 5nl, on a breakeven period atm, trying to study and grind through it.

Well I was out till 1am last night playing D&D.

DMing for a group. Last session involved a lot of walking around a city fluffing persuasion checks. I let them buy some information off the theives guild in the city because the players exhausted or discarded all the leads I threw at them. I'm a believer that you should always have an obvious solution and maybe a less obvious one to most problems but be ready for the players to come up with something you didn't think up and then go with it because it works. In this case the thieves guild is very powerful and so it made sense they'd know..

I think it was a bit of a shock to spend 3 hours wandering around shops and bars after the last session was a 7 hour dungeon crawl/goblinoid genocide session. Some of the players are newish and so I'm trying to give them a bit of everything. I'm really regretting letting a new player go druid though as there so many options she just ended up overwhelmed. That and sorc are terrible picks for clueless players.

They've technically finished the current quest but there's cultists and (lesser/least) demons to slay so they're going to clear out the mansion before they head off to their next adventure.

I think pretty much anything that actually has an ability curve where good and bad is meaningful, the best players have a mix of talent, effort and research with the true masters who understand everything else able to create because they know how their new styles will work with existing ones. If you try hard though and do your research that will usually put you above middle third. You'll be almost out the bump. Without practice and effort you won't even reach that section. Whether you're at the edge of the bulge or past the hump in the normal curve entirely is what talent decides. If you love chess why not just be the best you can?

You know, I've always wondered about the idea of a collectible-card-game/deck-building-type model of Chess where you can build your "army" via point-buy and buy extra pieces ala the classic Fairy Chess pieces like the Grasshopper or the Threeleaper to expand your deck.

Anyone else ever thought of that?

Agreed, but I do think there are some work arounds. I mean, you don't technically need the fancy $40 model of a hover tank to say its a hover tank, it just looks cool. Then one can probably pirate the rule set and go to the races.

I do think that the 'indy' boardgame scene is in good shape right now, the model of 'building' something given a restriction then battling it out could work. There is a deck building game called dominion which has melded that mechanic pretty well but it doesn't have what you were talking about (a point bank which you use to purchase an 'army').

If you are good at graphic design and using software, I think it would be sweet to design a game like that and see if kick starter will help you to market. Plenty of games have started out that way

All I remember for a fact is it had this guy: http://tappedout.net/mtg-card/kamahl-fist-of-krosa/

I remember thinking he was awesome and building the deck around him using all kinds of crazy lands, green creature producing cards and different artifacts to get the desired effect. They were all from around the same early-2000s time, if that helps.

You can, but the combo relies heavily on drawing with Griseldaddy; on top of that, you've got the Gitaxian Probes and the occasional Thoughtseize. Basically, this is one of the few decks that really feels the pain from shocklands. It would still be playable, but at maybe... let's say 60% efficiency, to pull a number out of my ass lol. Honestly, I can't tell you how many times I've gone down to 1-2 life before winning, where a shockland would've meant seeing 7 fewer cards.

Fuck, looking back at that post, remembering how much fun Jeskai Prowess used to be in Modern... I'm still pissed off about the Git Probe ban. It didn't even do shit to Death's Shadow decks, they just evolved into an even more nasty beast, but that card was a linchpin in so many fun, 'tier 3' decks, all of which died with the ban. Like, Modern has become more open at the cost of most of the non-linear stuff being snuffed out; I doubt that Ad Nauseam will be around much longer.

http://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/159809322488/is-nonbasic-landwalk-retired-too-or-other

>I''v also seen plenty of white cards with regenerate, so I don't think that is too weird for white.
Those were almost all from before indestructible was keyworded. Those cards would get indestructible today.

>I will get my balanced instant discard, I really want to make it work, but not broken or unplayable.
I don't know if it can be balanced, so I hope you can get it right. At least, you have to raise the cost out of isochron scepter's range. the problem is that even if you can only have 4 of these in your deck, you can abuse the effect many more times than that and prevent your opponent from playing magic. Blue and green can get the card back from the graveyard. Red can copy it when you cast it. Blue can give it flashback, etc. This is the type of effect that, even if you get right in a vacuum, you have to design around every other card around it so you don't accidentally break it.

Aid of the Alchemist is too strong at U. Blue should not be getting three 1/1 creatures on turn one. White gets two 1/1 token creatures for 1W and is the best color at this effect. Blue is the worst, so it shouldn't come anywhere near that (http://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/157018334603/any-color-can-create-tokens-but-is-there-a).

>The idea was to give a blue a good turn one board position by sacrificing its later game.
Sacrificing later resources for a boon now is exactly red's flavor. Mechanically, I think the card could still be izzet though (since both care about instants and sorceries and red is good at tokens and the randomness that comes with this effect). I think UR might be a fair cost. {U/R}{U/R} might be be a little too aggressive, and I think this effect doesn't feel right at UU either. Maybe {U/R}R if UR doesn't work (but then it might not even be blue, ha!).

IDK whether to put this on the Pokemon forum or here; but since it's being devved as a tabletop game (Albeit one stuck on Valve Time), I might as well ask.

If you don't know about it, it's basically a goofy Pokemon-meets-90s-whimsyedge-type monster battling setting; with a lot of great creature designs; that this dude's been working on for over a decade and of which I've been a huge fan of for ages.

You can find the bestary here: http://bogleech.com/mortasheen.htm
And a basic what's-going-on-in-the-setting world guide here; which I compiled from a bunch o old posts on the Facebook of the TTRPG company: https://pastebin.com/dB2tfZeH

Oh! Well, he's repeatedly assured us it's a big project for a relatively small team with day-jobs, and even mentioned he did some new art for it very recently

At the very least dude's been updating the bestiary consistently, so if you haven't checked it out in ages ya might as well! The very recent Ectosaur category is great, Ghostbusters-esque DInosaur Ghosts, and I think the Boo Men'd be amazing for filling out a MUGEN fighting game.

This was probably the right place.

I get the vibe the guy has ideas but it'll probably never become a game because he's got this creepy (but also slightly darkly humourous) world full of hideous monsters in his head but I suspect he spends more time dreaming up new monsters than trying to make mechanics which are adaptable and deep enough to do the variety justice without being an enormous clunky clusterfuck.

Well, actually he's not the one devving the mechanics of the TTRPG; it's a different (Again; small and with day jobs; hence why it's taking so long) team called Cat Powered Raygun studios; and they're not gonna have all the monsters from Day 1 to avoid that kinda clusterfuck . He's mainly doing the art n setting stuff; which he's mentioned actually doing some updates to recently for the pics he thinks he coulda done better.

Tho, dude has done game design before; he's got a small scavenger-hunt-y IRL game on his site called Homunculus Nightmare and has a simple combat system for his webcomic Awful Hospital, I trust he knows what he's doing.
