Werewolf the Apocalypse or Werewolf the Foresaken? by Caroline Lighthall - Sun, 05 Jul 2015 16:27:07 EST ID:F5P7OV4I No.27626 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Starting a tabletop gaming crew at my work. Looking into World of Darkness for our first game, most likely Werewolf, because who doesn't fucking love werewolfs right?!

Which system is more preferable? Foresaken or Apocalypse?
Which is more streamlined?

also, the new WoD game is much more streamlined, the writers of the system had a much better grasp of probability and what its like actually rolling dice to resolve conflict.

its a better system.

I kind of wish they would take the system from Forsaken, take the Background from Apocolypse and do a mash up knowing now what we do about "Grimdark" settings and what their general appeal is, and just generally make werewolves a lot more morally ambiguous and subtly evil.

Like really, just take out all that shit about dominatrixes and lay it squarely on the Furies, cause that is where it fucking belongs. Show people how fucking creepy it can get. Basically 90% of the behavior they accuse the Black Spiral Dancers of doing they are themselves guilty of.

They kidnap kids, put them through dangerous trials, induct them into their ideology, then either release them back to their parents like a terrorist cell member on standby or they end up migrating and running with a garou pack.

That shit sounds pretty fucking hardcore to me. But in the context of D&D, and not the "real world" people do fucked up shit all the time. They already have things like the kobold dellema, i.e. killing the children of the "monsters" you killed. People in D&D do fucked up shit all the time without even thinking about the consequences. Hell, I even threatened to cut off a kobolds balls once, I stood by and watched helplessly while my party slaghtered them. I couldnt' bring myself to participate, it just felt too real to me, like somehow it struck a chord.

What I'm saying is that players need a reason to reign it in a little, and the best system for doing that is with reknown. Make a big deal out of the scar rituals and the tribal tats and the benefits of having high reknown. You gotta make them feel proud of themselves, like their characters accomplishments mean something.

You need to develop a committment to a character and an investment in the setting. Like having a wood etching of the garou's marks that you carved yourself, made out of polished wood. I'm not sure about say, laquer, but turtle wax or something maybe. (Like the kind people use for their cars)

The point is, you need things like props, funny voices, strange modes of speech. You need things like music to produce the atmosphere but it needs to be ambient, sort of hidden in the background.

I used to like bands that contained a lot of political lyrics, but I realized that they are immersion breaking at the table, people are too busy listening to the lyrics and the rythyms. They are either getting too into it or its turning them off.

So undertaking my first major campaign construction, I had always played dungeons and dragons as a kid and a few times as an older adult and thrown together some bs dungeons or stolen something off the interwebs but I'm trying to craft a detailed world this time. What are your strategies, tips , successes stories? Running into logical errors like wanting to put a jungle and a forest on the same landmass and idk when I look at drafts of lager maps they just don't have that "real" feel if that makes any sense.

Suspense of belief must be maintained, I feel all things be it a transdimensional being of utter darkness or a ball falling on an uneven floor, must have a logical flow. I guess I could be like "something something darkside ignore climate zones.. dragons" I really want to put some depth into this one.

Good generic superhero pictures are difficult to come by, as the industry is so trademark-oriented. My RP's usually repurpose /vg/ or SF/Fantasy/anime imagery.

Here's a gadget we use to create custom character art even if you can't draw a straight line.

And this is an booru imageboard overboard search engine, you can get some good artwork, but I suggest you set it from "lewd" to "safe", or you end up with a lot of babyfuck. Seriously, fuck Japan.

Just thinking.
I know the whole "adventure party" tradition is ripped from Lord Of The Rings, and The Fellowship Of The Ring was that size to try and sneak past the Ork armies and monsters into Mordor, but it just seems odd to have all these 5/6-strong variegated mini-gangs tromping around looking for caves and unexplored underground labyrinths. Just spontaneously forming in taverns and heading out to the nearest underground structure and just assuming it's going to be full of monsters and loot instead of fucking bats and bat shit.

I mean that size party isn't much good for anything except bodyguarding, courier work, and banditry, really.
Are there really any historical or fantasy parallels to the RPG party before Tolkien? There were Sindbad's crews, but they were pretty much expressly redshirts. I guess even within Tolkien there was the Dwarf party that Bilbo accompanied, but that wasn't exactly a "party", more a "band", like the Vikings in Eaters Of The Dead. With a Band you can get things done, especially a homogeneous one, like a pack of Arthur's kniggits, or Charlemagne's paladins. The ragtag party isn't much good for anything but exploration, and they're just lucky that every dungeon is basically unguarded, with security depending on local wildlife wandering in and eating adventurers, and the occasional trap which must have to be reset every time a cave horse or a cave elk steps on one. I guess the wildlife running into the traps is what feeds the Orc guards. Considering they never seem to just buy some goddamn food from the local town, apart from maybe raiding a farm or two. So that explains why they leave to door open and unguarded, so the things wander in. Although it would make more sense to set the traps outside.

Adventurers forming in a tavern is an easy plot hook however both 4th and 5th edition D&D encouraged you to link the party in other ways. Every character has a backstory, a reason they're adventuring, either something they're trying to accomplish or they left their life behind. It's implied they're all special and I remember in second edition that they actually gave numbers by level. Low level adventurers are uncommon people, people above level 5 or 6 are exceptional individuals. Lots of these roving bands simply die. And in current 5th edition it's a lot like medieval life in general, 1-5 is brutal and if you survive that you tend to go a lot longer but no one got attached to their kids/adventurers before 5 because most of them were one illness/one crit away from going down.

Anyway parties should have a reason to be together and often a plot which forces them to adventure. Maybe their quests are part of a single story or maybe they're just trying to survive while the main plot happens and a lot of shit is happening. I'm running a campaign where they were recruited as a "diversity" option to try to solve a series of murders, caught and killed the murderer. He was an assassin, everyone knew they succeeded, but then his boss annexed the town so they fled and now they're sort of together through momentum taking on odd jobs because they have unique skills. They fled to the next kingdom over where the government has it's own problems and isn't looking after the people, plus there's 2 warlords (related to their initial problem) who are trying to annex the whole continent stirring up trouble. So they'll put out a few local brushfires. At that point they'll have done enough stuff to further each others' goals or have profited enough that they'll stick together and will have enough of a rep that people will come to them for help. In the long term several of them want to stop one or both sides of the war and/or people that work for those factions while other members of the party have found people who trust them and just let them do what they're good at instead of living on the fringes of society.

Meanwhile monsters aren'…

First time DM'ing/roleplaying, HELP by Eliza Claywill - Mon, 19 Jan 2015 14:55:03 EST ID:DixnsZ2w No.27387 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Okay, so my coworkers and I have been considering starting a roleplaying group. It'll probably be 4-6 people including myself. Maybe 2 of these people have prior roleplaying experience. I am not one of them. I have a basic understanding of the underlying systems and goals of a tabletop RPG, but no experience. And I seem to be the only one willing to step into the shoes of the DM. I don't mind this, necessarily, I know it'll be work but I think it could be a lot of fun too.

So we haven't chosen a game yet, I think at the moment we're looking for a more classic DnD style setting. ATM it's between DnD 3.5, DnD 5, and Pathfinder. As DM, I'd like to build my own world, but I'd also like to start off on a few pre-made quests to use the first few sessions to get my own feet wet and get an idea of my player's styles. I have a few ideas for what kind of world I want to build, I think I'd like to keep it generally lighthearted with some obscure references. For example, I think I'd like my characters to find a magical artifact, "the stone of Cecil" which, when used (once per day at most), will play an eery quote from Welcome to Nightvale that I'll select before each session. There will also definitely be a king who insists on being called "The King Formerly Known As The Prince". I'd also like to experiment with dipping into various genres for short story arcs later on, for example maybe a lovecraftian horror arc, so I'd like the rules to be flexible and able to support that kind of thing.

So, I'm looking for suggestions on which game to use, what books/accessories I should grab, and any tips for worldbuilding and DM'ing in general. Can you help me out, /TG/? I present you with a coupon for a free marijuana in return

I second everything in this post so hard OP. I got into tabletop gaming right around the time 3.5 was on it's last real legs as a franchise (Like, when you could walk into a Barnes & Noble and find books from that edition still available). It was fun, but 5e just seems way more "User friendly." Granted you still have to read the books all the way through at least once, but if you're really meant for this sort of thing you'll be excited enough about figuring out different builds and combos and such that you won't mind. If you have even one person in your group who has a decent amount of tabletop RPG experience he should be able to teach the rest.

And yeah, I have also met a lot of pathfinder guys who rolled an 80 in acrobatics and crammed themselves right up their own assholes.

The stone of Cecil is a calcified growth removed by doctors from Cecil's bladder. It is, like most of these things, conscious and convinced that the person now inhabiting Cecil's body is an evil wizard. He doesn't have proof but... he's just sure of it.

DM here, check out Critical Role and High Rollers on Youtube, two groups of fun peoples playing DnD 5e and Matt Mercer of critical role is an awesome story teller and voice actor for Blizzard and stuff and they both have some videos on getting started with DMing andRPing in general. Mostly just keep in mind that the goal isnt to "win" the game, there isnt really a "win" you just play. so many insufferable min-maxing "my dude is the best" players that ruin all the fun DONT BE ONE OF THESE. The fun of roleplaying is found in your characters weaknesses not their strengths. also halflings are awesome, lotr hobbits are not the same thing as DnD halflings.

I've actually got a 5th edition campaign off the ground. I'm well out of practicing at the NPC/role playing stuff but the mechanical stuff is super easy to run if you read the DMG stuff on encounter building. I tend to avoid having repeats of the same fight. I also avoid "random encounter tables" I prepare a few encounters that are just there to throw at the players for a given session. Some related to the main plot, some just world building. Don't put stuff you don't actually want the players to encounter. Sure there's hill giants near the starting village, okay but the players don't cross their paths until they are strong enough to not get 1 shot. Or if you want to throw extremely lethal encounters don't trust players to know they can't win. That's relying on metagaming based on knowledge they may not have. Just tell them outright "this thing will destroy you and your characters know it". And make sure the challenge is avoiding it.

As I said I feel my role playing shit is a bit shaky (not awful though because they've not turned into murder hobos but actually solve problems with diplomacy and guile pretty often) but I've had my party on the edge of their seats in quite a few fights. Except the one where they scouted the area, pre planned and essentially using fire and surprise, hearded 12 sleeping bandits into a blender made of cloud of daggers and spike growth spells. I will say that the first few levels are very dangerous for characters so play it safe at first.

I tend to override treasure tables and pick very slowly but your mileage will vary. Remember magic items in 5th edition are precious. No obligatory. My characters will start getting +1 shit around level 5. +3 with another effect is a legendary item because everything is more compressed now. I might give them all a top tier class defining iconic weapon later on but I intend to make it part of a quest which ties into their own back or side stories.

If you've got preconceptions it's important to remember that critical 20s and 1s only apply to combat and there's no critical miss (I personally like 20 always makes a saving throw and 1 always fails but for skill checks I'd advise 20 just being 20 and 1 just being 1). This has the following "awful" effects. Don't make people do checks for stuff unless there's a consequence for failure, or if failure or success are possible. And yeah, I'd say play it straight, the comedy will take care of itself. Or if you do comedy, do it very subtly.
>I'm a fat old wizard and I want to jump to the moon and can do 1 in 20 times without magic
>I'm a master acrobat and want to walk on a 4 inch wide balance beam indoors with no distractions, wind or items weighing me down but will fall off about once per 2 minutes.

The lack of critical miss means the following isn't applicable
>wizard can barely use a sword, will drop his sword on his foot once per 2 minutes
>level 20 fighter, pinnacle of martial prowess, stabs own eye every 30 seconds due to higher attack rate.

Anything goes, prefer to rate the previous card if you post one but whatever who gives a shit really.

Just post something good that you preferably took the time to learn card syntax to make.

This one is bonkers. Way too good & out of blue's abilities.

>>28452
red creatures generally have higher power than toughness, plus it has first strike. There's no reason for this to dodge bolts.

why does this gain abilities when it enters the battlefield? are you trying to get weird interactions with humility?

the only black abilities on that card are flying and regenerate (and wotc doesn't even do regeneration anymore, but that's moot if you're making cards for your own set).

What's your thought process when trying to design new cards? do you bother thinking about what a color can and can't do, or do you just throw random keywords into the textbox?
