meant to say, right now i'm just starting out at low stakes tournaments (<$100 buy in). I've done well 4 times out of roughly 30-40 attempts so i'm far from a winning player (got 1st once, cashed another time and had 2 final tables). Working on my game by reading up, playing some home games, and trying to spot my weaknesses.

Not really comfortable shelling out a $300-$500 buyin for 1/3 or 2/5 NL cash game at a casino so I'll probably be a tourny player for a while. Really hoping online poker gets legalized in washington but it doesnt seem like it'll happen any time soon.

How is your game?

I'd suggest learning short stacking, if you can buy in for 25BB or less you could build roll on those cash games fairly easily, especially if people buyin big and are loose.

As for me still playing 5nl, on a breakeven period atm, trying to study and grind through it.

I think pretty much anything that actually has an ability curve where good and bad is meaningful, the best players have a mix of talent, effort and research with the true masters who understand everything else able to create because they know how their new styles will work with existing ones. If you try hard though and do your research that will usually put you above middle third. You'll be almost out the bump. Without practice and effort you won't even reach that section. Whether you're at the edge of the bulge or past the hump in the normal curve entirely is what talent decides. If you love chess why not just be the best you can?

You know, I've always wondered about the idea of a collectible-card-game/deck-building-type model of Chess where you can build your "army" via point-buy and buy extra pieces ala the classic Fairy Chess pieces like the Grasshopper or the Threeleaper to expand your deck.

Anyone else ever thought of that?

Agreed, but I do think there are some work arounds. I mean, you don't technically need the fancy $40 model of a hover tank to say its a hover tank, it just looks cool. Then one can probably pirate the rule set and go to the races.

I do think that the 'indy' boardgame scene is in good shape right now, the model of 'building' something given a restriction then battling it out could work. There is a deck building game called dominion which has melded that mechanic pretty well but it doesn't have what you were talking about (a point bank which you use to purchase an 'army').

If you are good at graphic design and using software, I think it would be sweet to design a game like that and see if kick starter will help you to market. Plenty of games have started out that way

http://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/159809322488/is-nonbasic-landwalk-retired-too-or-other

>I''v also seen plenty of white cards with regenerate, so I don't think that is too weird for white.
Those were almost all from before indestructible was keyworded. Those cards would get indestructible today.

>I will get my balanced instant discard, I really want to make it work, but not broken or unplayable.
I don't know if it can be balanced, so I hope you can get it right. At least, you have to raise the cost out of isochron scepter's range. the problem is that even if you can only have 4 of these in your deck, you can abuse the effect many more times than that and prevent your opponent from playing magic. Blue and green can get the card back from the graveyard. Red can copy it when you cast it. Blue can give it flashback, etc. This is the type of effect that, even if you get right in a vacuum, you have to design around every other card around it so you don't accidentally break it.

Aid of the Alchemist is too strong at U. Blue should not be getting three 1/1 creatures on turn one. White gets two 1/1 token creatures for 1W and is the best color at this effect. Blue is the worst, so it shouldn't come anywhere near that (http://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/157018334603/any-color-can-create-tokens-but-is-there-a).

>The idea was to give a blue a good turn one board position by sacrificing its later game.
Sacrificing later resources for a boon now is exactly red's flavor. Mechanically, I think the card could still be izzet though (since both care about instants and sorceries and red is good at tokens and the randomness that comes with this effect). I think UR might be a fair cost. {U/R}{U/R} might be be a little too aggressive, and I think this effect doesn't feel right at UU either. Maybe {U/R}R if UR doesn't work (but then it might not even be blue, ha!).

IDK whether to put this on the Pokemon forum or here; but since it's being devved as a tabletop game (Albeit one stuck on Valve Time), I might as well ask.

If you don't know about it, it's basically a goofy Pokemon-meets-90s-whimsyedge-type monster battling setting; with a lot of great creature designs; that this dude's been working on for over a decade and of which I've been a huge fan of for ages.

You can find the bestary here: http://bogleech.com/mortasheen.htm
And a basic what's-going-on-in-the-setting world guide here; which I compiled from a bunch o old posts on the Facebook of the TTRPG company: https://pastebin.com/dB2tfZeH

Oh! Well, he's repeatedly assured us it's a big project for a relatively small team with day-jobs, and even mentioned he did some new art for it very recently

At the very least dude's been updating the bestiary consistently, so if you haven't checked it out in ages ya might as well! The very recent Ectosaur category is great, Ghostbusters-esque DInosaur Ghosts, and I think the Boo Men'd be amazing for filling out a MUGEN fighting game.

This was probably the right place.

I get the vibe the guy has ideas but it'll probably never become a game because he's got this creepy (but also slightly darkly humourous) world full of hideous monsters in his head but I suspect he spends more time dreaming up new monsters than trying to make mechanics which are adaptable and deep enough to do the variety justice without being an enormous clunky clusterfuck.

Well, actually he's not the one devving the mechanics of the TTRPG; it's a different (Again; small and with day jobs; hence why it's taking so long) team called Cat Powered Raygun studios; and they're not gonna have all the monsters from Day 1 to avoid that kinda clusterfuck . He's mainly doing the art n setting stuff; which he's mentioned actually doing some updates to recently for the pics he thinks he coulda done better.

Tho, dude has done game design before; he's got a small scavenger-hunt-y IRL game on his site called Homunculus Nightmare and has a simple combat system for his webcomic Awful Hospital, I trust he knows what he's doing.

Being the DnD guy of the group by Emma Hoddleville - Wed, 29 Jun 2016 03:46:44 EST ID:HXpK6ZWi No.28171 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

I recently got a group of my friends interested in playing D&D for the first time. Since i'm the one with the most experience it was kind of expected that I be the DM for the game. I have zero experience running a full game. The world building and story telling part don't cause me concern as much as the numbers part. Someone is going to ask "Can I shoot that guy directly in the eye with my arrow?" and it's going to take 15 minutes for me to look up the specific rule that applies.

Making combat encounters that have adequate xp rewards for players to level often enough worries me.

Is it all really a matter of making sure each player does something in each sort of encounter and giving them a predetermined amount of xp for each night or should the obtaining of xp be purely dictated by the value charts in the book and how many enemies they defeat.

Most situations are dealt with by rolling a d20 and adding a pertinent stat but how are the Difficulty Classes set? Is that purely up to the DM's judgment or is there something in the books for most general situations.

I'm probably going to run 5e but i'm interested in Pathfinder. I only really have experience with 3.5. Does anyone have any good resources or cheatsheets for helping me run this campaign as painlessly as possible? I really want to keep it RP heavy with only the occasional combat encounter to punctuate moments in the story or their adventures.
Halp.

To be honest as I've played with most of these guys I don't expect powergaming. I expect a clusterfuck.

I'm just trying to work out how to keep the characters in character and engaged without the stoned druid or the raging barb upsetting the guards. I expect them to do things like dig down into dungeons and forget they're going to fall when they cut the floor out from beneath them. I think the problem is going to be them forcing me to fuck them up and a TPK in a complete unscripted encounter (ie not even a random one) early on in the campaign.

If we can make this work it'll be awesome. It's going to be a case of trying to collectively balance actually going in a direction with it being fun. Our last campaign went from serious to slapstick within 2 hours and culminated in a warlock walking a robot dog so it could take a shit and bury it. This party is expected to actually fight things but I need to make sure I leave them a few open ended problems with some pre defined solutions so that they can ignore them and blunder their way through them in a completely unexpected fashion.

The group I Play with is usually pretty serious so I'm not very well equipped to help with such a conundrum. As for keeping them in character without causing problems with npcs is probably going to be very difficult. Perhaps a good route to go is have them adventure through a few towns with shitty guards. Or perhaps arrest the characters early on to let them know you're not afraid to call them on bafoonary.

As for pulling them along a story without them feeling on rails just make the hooks something they can't resist in character. Maybe wait a few sessions and see how the party typically goes about things and use this to your advantage, for instance if they decide they want to go steal a bunch of gold maybe they find a small chest with gold and a treasure map which leads to a plot hook.

There's also the option of coming to your players before you start one session and let them know that you don't want the campaign to become too slapstick and look for a compromise. As the gm/DM communication outside of game can be one of your most important tools.

I was the dwarf guy though I think my IP changes sometimes

My group all bailed at the last possible second and were unavailable for ages after. One or two were more into it and one or two have always been flaky as fuck. I burned everything made a new group, we don't have many games because a couple of the younger players are less available but everyone turns up when they say they will and doesn't cancel on the day. I played a bit of dark heresy with most of the previous group and session 1 had 1 player literally drop out on the day, it was a bitch to get to and I'd stressed out getting there in a week when my grandmother had died and I had an interview the next day.

So anyway I am not playing with those people. My current group treats my time like it matters.

So the young ins in my current group and the oldest of my previous group are the limiting factor. I have a friend who plays weekly with a bunch of people his/our age ie 30ish and I envy that. But at least my sessions happen and so far I've not had all but 2 people drop out on the day. If I could find another more available player I'd like to talk one of the other guys in my group into DMing and running a party of 3 more often, because once a month is good and all but a) not that much and b) i want to be a player at some point.

as long as they have masterpieces, EV is gonna go down. stores are gonna crack tons of packs to try and get a shiny Chalice or something, and that's going to flood the market with all the good rares and uncommons. this is good if you play constructed, but sucks if you draft a lot (unless you're so lucky that you open a masterpiece or two yourself)...

I did 2HG with my GF. we went 3-1. I had a RB aggro deck and she had a WG midrange deck. we didn't open anything crazy either, but you can rack up wins in sealed with just a smooth curve.

So undertaking my first major campaign construction, I had always played dungeons and dragons as a kid and a few times as an older adult and thrown together some bs dungeons or stolen something off the interwebs but I'm trying to craft a detailed world this time. What are your strategies, tips , successes stories? Running into logical errors like wanting to put a jungle and a forest on the same landmass and idk when I look at drafts of lager maps they just don't have that "real" feel if that makes any sense.
