Okay, meat damage has become much more prevalent during the last cycle. What's your killer Weyland deck?

Start with 3.5, learn the basics and what each class(Rouge, Wizard, Fighter) is and can do. Then learn movement, battle, and spells. As a DM you have to look a bit more into it.

If you have 2 friends you can learn this game in one night just dicking around. Running fun little battles. (You enter the Silver Spike tavern, home of the toughest ugliest looking people you have ever seen. yadda yadda yadda and you roll initiative). After that, it depends on you, after that night, if you had fun and want to read more into DMing, if you want to get your own set of dice(You can buy a pound on Amazon for 15-20$) and how long of an adventure you want to run. A quick find a child kidnapped by kobolds/gnolls, and return her. OR the kingdom is under attack and you have to fight your way to freedom.

All you need is some dice and play mat. Screw online dice, you don't get the real feel for the game and those crit 1 fails and crit 20's IMO don't have the feeling behind them. As for figure's you can use almost anything. My bros and I used to use pennies as enemies with 1-20 marked on them, and our characters were legos and or dice.

I completely disagree with everyone here. For beginners, 5th Edition is the way to go. I started with 3.5 way back in the day, moved to Pathfinder (didn't care for some elements of 4E, but it wasn't, like, the devil), and finally found the holy grail that is 5th edition.

It's the most forgiving, the starter set is like $15 at Walmart, you could get it tonight if you wanted, and it will ease you in very gently.

The internet seems to be ignoring 5th which is weird because it's been hugely successful. I've had a look at the PHB and it looks pretty good. Bit like how C2D was based on P3 because 4 was actually a bad idea in practice 5th is streamlined and intuitive but without losing too much depth where I'm sitting anyway. They removed a lot of secondary derived stats and shit and just used a system which is smart enough that it gives similar effects with less convoluted methodology. 4th had good class balance but it drew too much from MMOs and while I liked the defined roles, most of the rest of it wasn't an improvement. The improved class balance deserves a little credit and it seems like they managed to do that fairly well in 5th though I've only looked at it on paper. It also seems much less magic item dependent. I miss my 2nd ed days where magic items were significant rather than part of the expected build and gearing curve.

I dunno why a bard wouldn't take wish as one of their cross class spells though.

But it's like it was never released here.

Been trying out DnD with an experienced group who I don't know personally. I am not social and it's weird. I barely get to do anything. I read an RPS article about a dude who read up on DnD for a week with the basic materials, and successfully lead a session with a huge audience. I've been thinking about starting my own session/group thing, because apparently 5th edition makes it easy.

My advice is: Let everybody do something significant, regularly. Maybe even prompt them, if you know they could do something, but aren't saying anything.
Maybe take turns making group decisions.
Don't let the group get too big.

http://basicfantasy.org/

Here's another home-brew, free retro dungeon basher, made to play like a stripped-down first and second edition.

http://wizardawn.and-mag.com/
This has a lot of useful utilities for DMs, like map generators, random encounter generators, treasure generators, etc.

http://www.habitualindolence.net/masterplan/
This is a module design studio that helps you balance your game against the players' levels.

http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/
And this is another online dice roller.

Apart from those, I recommend just gorging on all the fantasy and history books you can take. At it's heart RPing is just storytelling, and you gotta feed the mill.

Is anyone interested in dueling with wooden swords anymore?
I have bought a set and have been practicing with them but I'm not sure if anyone in my area interested in sparring.

Just take a Japanese martial arts class that will eventually teach you some weapons combat. If you don't do that I highly doubt your ability to effectively use it in any given scenario. Personally I keep a couple of plain wood bokken upstairs for nonlethal home defense. I wouldn't do that at all if I wasn't trained to use it.

Well, there's the Dog Brothers, they're about the only lunatics who spar with bokken, without paying the arm and leg it costs to study actual kendo and get all the expensive traditional Darth Vader armour.

Felonyfights sometimes have shinai matches, the one I saw ended with a skinhead eating a homeless kid's face...

Pun-Pun is bullshit by Sophie Niggerhall - Mon, 03 Mar 2014 19:57:48 EST ID:Fd8FFhEu No.26769 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Pun Pun is not and never has been a legal build. It's just wankery about how Serpent Kingdoms allows the gaining of "an ability", and then gives examples like "slippery skin" for a who-gives-a-fuck bonus to Escape Artist checks. But since it doesn't have extremely specific limits, dumbasses claim that they could take abilities like at-will Gate or some shit. Because apparently they could totally convince their DMs at home that that is equivalent to having slippery skin. It's just stupid. It is actually more retarded than the people who want use activated True Strike on their swords for 1800 gp that grants +20 to-hit on every attack. It would be like asking for a use activated belt of Miracle for 1800 gp on the grounds that the item creation costs are open ended and the DM can raise or lower the costs of an item.

But for whatever reason, Pun Pun gets mouth breathing charoppers to masturbate. The avalanche of group think is so massive at this point that I doubt one person in ten who rants about how powerful Pun Pun is has even read the ability that supposedly lets him exist. The fact that it really really doesn't do that hasn't even slowed this shit down. Interestingly: the original idiot who designed Pun Pun was asked to do a fight versus The Wish and The Word - and got curb stomped. He took refuge in Magic Immunity (infinite spell resistance) and took a round to taunt The Word - who then used a Supernatural Word that bypassed SR and instantly killed him. Fucking idiot.

Pun-Pun was never intended to actually be played. The entire idea behind Pun-Pun is a Reductio Ad Absurdium argument against the very sort of RAW-tardery that OP is so angry about. It isn't used to masturbate, it is used to laugh. It is very effective at what it is actually meant to do: that is, to show that ignoring the existence of the DM when making a character leads to silly stuff that will never see the table, and that whenever you build you have to take common sense into account.

There's no need to be upset.
