I've done the World of Darkness larp run by Mind's Eye Society (the 'official' club for WoD larping) and its fun, occasionally.

I've LARPed. Was in the Netherlands, so it was pretty different from what I always see on the internet.
>Proper safety-certified weapons cost a small fortune but tend to look pretty kickass, they also take up more time in keeping maintained than actually being used for LARP
>Costumes range from "This guy just quickly grabbed some shit, use your imagination" to "This asshole had way too much time on his hands and way too much skill with a sewing machine". Can either get expensive or time-consuming craft wise.
>There's a 'balance' between combat and RP. Heavy quotation marks. Sometimes it feels like combat is severely lacking, sometimes you wish the GM crew would think of something more original than fucking skeleton waves every 15 minutes
That said? HOLY SHIT DO I FUCKING HATE LARP.

The GM crew tend to be assholes, imagine the normal flaws a DM could have in D&D and apply that to LARP. Characters have been fucked over for bullshit reasons. Playing an NPC one game made me realise just how fucking dirty and underhanded it gets in the GM crew's discussion bunker.

It's fucking expensive, takes up your entire weekend and forces you into shitty lodging with shitty food that you'll no doubt pay way too much for. (It's usually something really fucking cheap, 'cause fuck proper catering!) You spend a weekend trudging through some awful fucking forest in your LARP gear. Fuck your life if you have an uncomfortable costume. Plate armour? Bitch, please! And those stains will never go out of your robes unless you got laundry magic, wizard. And if some shitty skeleton kills you, guess where you're going to lay down.

Also NEVER play anything that requires any form of 'ingredients' that need to be collected. You'll ALWAYS be fucked over in the end, never worth taking.

Go outdoors walking if you love nature that much, and play tabletop games or MMOs if you're that addicted to fantasy gaming. But LARP was just a regrettable experience for me.

You know they have a LARPing room at MAGFest but I've never done it before but it seems interesting enough depending on what LARP it is. Might have to do it when I'm there this year.

I larped with OWbN (one world by night) which was a big Larp community before Minds Eye Theatre became the sanctioned organization. It was still a big community by the time I got into it. I had fun, but I got a lot of gripes with it. It's kind of like a sad, awkward need parade run by people that were never popular in the slightest bit as teens and have finally found an outlet for all their social agresstion and posturing. Its like bizzarro prom night, unpopular awkward people are social giants that have lowbies kissing their butts, kinda gnarly girls are sexual goddesses doted on by a harem of thirsty neckbeards, old goths make fun of all of the shinanigens around them while failing to see the hypocrisy of taking part, cats marrying dogs.

Over all, though, if you like tabletop (the tribe I am from) it is some interesting anthropology. I did it for about a year, became pretend important myself and then quit. I prefer tabletop for sure, because the actual "game" aspect is pretty weak. Most of the time it's like the world least exciting, worst acted vampire movie. But sometimes it'd be fun, and some of the people had good acting/role play chops and you'd be able to have some cool character moments. Bright spots shining in a fog of mediocrity.

Oh, and as free advice to anyone that wants to get into it: this is probably fairly obvious, but these cliques tend to get fairly insestious, so I'd avoid getting physical with anyone involved. They probably have a dramatic and storied sexual history with like two other people in the troupe and you'd just be going down a dangerous road of crazy if you try to dip your pen in that ink. I avoided that shit in my time Larping and my experience was all the better for it.

As a student practicing HEMA I am not allowed to LARP, I'd be disqualified for pretty much any method of striking. Historical European martial arts and the German Fechtbuchs focus on proper spear play, fencing, hand to hand, and wrestling amongst other great bits of knowledge. All of which would have me immediately disqualified if I tried to implement these tactics as there isn't much I'd be able to utilize without heavy physical contact such as thrusting or stabbing motions.

The rules in LARP prevent me from being able to wear my own suit of armor or utilize my training. I would have to "earn" the ability to wear the armor I paid for, and after several months of larping I could maybe wear my pauldrons and cuirass but still not my full set. Most of larping really sucks, but there are some good ones. I've seen some plastic lightsaber and Nerf gun battles themed after starwars where the "Sith" larp team will wear black hoodies and such to represent their faction and oppose the other normally clad folks representing Rebels and Jedi. They love to battle until their little plastic light sabers break.

The coolest I hear is in Europe where they have post apocalyptic themed LARP battles that utilize paintball guns and masks. You make your own fallout raider armor and go nuts with paintball guns playing in teams. Mock firefights in Mad Max raider gear would be more fun than getting banned because I decided to parry and thrust with a foam sword. The only other "larpers" like that I see often are the Military bros who show up in full gear to do airsoft or paintball as teams in the Desert and those can get pretty heated... No pun intended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this post. It starts off and I'm thinking, "okay maybe this guy was wronger by a larper or something..." and finally when I make it to the end, I see what happened:
>getting banned because I decided to parry and thrust with a foam sword.
You fucked his shit up man, fuck them. Bitches don't know shit about my legitimate historically accurate larping, also known as historical reenactment.

I don't actually do that, or any thing outdoors.
