I'm not a huge fan of gameplay mods to be honest. Usually it's just the work of a lone coder who doesn't know shit about level design, who doesn't care about writing or artistic style. I don't really see the point of playing something that doesn't have an actual campaign (or an artistic vision for that matter).
Now wads that are made specifically for a gameplay mods can be great (at least there's something to play on), but they tend to be pretty short.

Most of the wads listed above won't work with a gameplay mod btw.

I'm looking for a wad I used to play that was really fun. It was a completely grey ghost city full of barely visible enemies and the aim of the game was survival within tight corridors, and the players were scored on how long they could survive, and you had to coordinate and work together and go one at a time sometimes to clear the way and progress for other players. I've been playing Freedoom with a GZdoom frontend, and it's horrible.
It looks like Ken's Labyrinth after someone's cum in your eyes, sounds like Megadeth played on a PC's internal speaker, and the menus look like they're written in lipstick. The monsters all sound like you've spilt their coffee and make annoyed grunts at you. The Freedoomguy looks like a gay Doomguy in moon boots, and the human enemies are very drunken Borg dancing hardcore.
One level is literally a single room with a sign saying THERE IS NO LEVEL HERE. The level design manages to plagiarise specific Doom levels, while making them worse.
Basically it's Doom without the good art or music.

It was. The enemies were just transparent grey shapes and if they touched you, you died, and you had to keep moving all the time or they would corner you and surround you, and there were so many of them that if you weren't accurate they would quickly swarm you. I usually never got far, but it was fun to watch other players to see how far they'd get. I can't find the wad anywhere and I've been looking really hard.

Apparently what happened, according to Romero, is that he went in to work on the game one day and found the easter egg of his head hidden behind the wall. It was just put there for fun by another developer. So to fuck with the dev that put it there he recorded his own voice work and tied it to the easter egg as a surprise.

Of course, this is, like, my second hand version of the story, but apparently it went something like that.

I had to wade through a shit-ton of god-awful wads from "Caco-Warts" and "One-Man-Doom" (obviously Rex Claussens cocksucking bitch) and I deleted 99% of them after the first 3-5 minutes!

I'm starting to realize why Sgt Mark gets so much butthurt hate:
Most haters could never create anything close to Hell on Earth,
just look at all the mediocre of plain ugly shit like "flood-mines" or "phoenix rising" !

I remember people gushing all over the place for plain boring maps like "heroes tales" , "Dead Stupid" or "Ancient Aliens", maps just stuffed and cramped with tons of demons, with no sort of enemy-placement or even intelligent triggers!

Is there any other source for good maps/campaigns?

Got it working, but when I use Doom Nukems weapon pack, the shotgun seems to switch between two different skins mid play.

I like the ambient music but i feel it changed too much of DooM without being its own thing. Some of the weapons are clearly OP as well.
When it comes to replay the Original Doom id prefer using Complex doom. It adds new weapons which i feel none are OP and the extra demons add a lot of variety to the gameplay.

Every. Single. Time. I'll never understand you guys. Can't you enjoy something without the brutal label on it? Don't get your hopes up. This is a full blown TC, there is not a single piece of the old doom in here. There is absolutely NO CHANCE any mod is going to be compatible with it.

Here is what the authors has to say about brutal doom compatibility:

Brutal isn't the label
its an essential effect that lets you splatter enemies brains onto walls.

You know why this is requested "every single time"?
Because it enhances gameplay 100x!

Thats the reason gibbing was essential in Quake and HL, because it gives you a feel of fast impact.

I seriously could care less about the BD-label and all the artificial drama,
but everyone who tries to restrict his mod by incompatibilites, should just stop modding forever.

I'm not trying to be mean or trying to tell you how you should play your games, I really couldn't care less. But asking for brutal doom compatibility in every single mod means you have a deep and severe misunderstanding of how games and moddings works.

For something to work with brutal doom it has to be made with brutal doom in mind, it's that simple. The author doesn't have to do that because he has a vision and he doesn't want to compromise that vision by forcing himself to use some random gameplay mod that happens to be popular. Show some respect to the modder, try to understand why he did it, try to play it the way it was intended first and you might like it even better.

He is not going out of his way to restrict compatibility on his mod. It just happen to be incompatible because that's how things work, period. Any mods that has new ennemies/weapons/mechanics will probably be brutal doom incompatible, so stop asking. This is not a choice on the developper part, it just happen to be this way. There's nothing anyone can do about it.

If you want a brutal version so badly you can do it yourself. Everything from BOA is available for free on github. That's the beauty of doom modding, you can pickup any WAD and change anything inside, nothing is encrypted, even monsters and weapons are scripted in readable files rather than compiled.

The drama is from people who keep asking the same thing over and over, despite all logic and reasoning. It gets tiring on the developpers, especially when people like you are telling them they should stop making games simply because they didn't made the game for the right mod.

No modder is forced to make his mod compatible, because very single wad - if done right - is already compatible with BD.

And as you said: Thats the beauty about Doom:
You can mod it into nearly everything.
And the only way the modding is happening is through sharing and combining the shit out of mods.

Youtube should be a good resource for tutorials too. I'd start by looking at how a level is built from start to finish, then open up a copy of the vanilla "doom2.wad" (to save time and effort) and copy over the map elements that you want. You'll still have to tweak spawn points for weaps/mods/items/etc. as some of them won't be in the playable area.

It'll be a lot of work (a LOT of work), but afterwards you'll be able to pull maps out of just about any total conversion mod which is a very handy set of skills.

just drag the wads (or pk3s) you want to use onto the GzDoom.exe.

(Normally when I play its usally 4-5 different wads and pk3's I drag onto the exe.
Mostly HD-textures and additional lighting effects and music-wad.)

I can't believe people equate visible pixelation with ugliness. Doom still looks fine to this day. I prefer it to today's sterile shooters, and the multiplayer is still better than any other multiplayer shooter I've played. Hell, there are Doom wads that are better than full "triple A" games sold at full retail price.

BTW does the latest Doom have anything like the modding community of the original? Does it have a modding community at all? I ask because the game looks pretty good, as did the original Doom single player, it's just that I never play Doom for the single player campaign. I mean has the FPS genre really evolved much when a twenty five year old FPS is more fun? I'm looking at you 500 million dollar Destiny. How much did it cost to make all those wads? I'm not saying there's no innovation in modern shooters, there have been plenty, but newer does not equal better.

There have been some great shooters that have done a lot of cool things with the genre. But Doom is still one of the best.

I think the early Unreal games are probably better but because they're 3D I think it raised the bar for modding exponentially and so denied it the longevity that Doom got. DOOM was a modernised take on the original and again snapmap blows and uses the (shit) multiplayer engine with 2 guns and is far too restrictive generally. So it won't have that modability. The 2.5D sprite format of the original is what keeps it alive. Even though brutalising it or whatever added mouse aim.

Lots of other FPS did cool things but few to non had the gameplay as simple but perfect. People lambast bioshock, its gameplay was pretty mediocre but the world and story and stuff were great. Deus Ex was a fucking clunky RPG. Ugly too. Wonderful. Painkiller was early 00s trenchcoat fodder turned to like 666 out of 10 and it was great fun as a result. Shadow warrior was knob and/or dad jokes and slicing shit up with a katana. Halo had the then revolutionary regenerating health/shields and also fucking couch co op. Many step brother bonding moments had there. You shoot the elites but don't stop moving for a second, while the tank is missing you with its cannon I'll shove a rocket up its exhaust and then we'll have the elites flanked and can punch them to death now their shields are down.

FPS evolved in a lot of ways, but that evolution made the modding scene Doom enjoys impossible. I think the genre has lost its way a little bit but there's always new ideas and even if they're often used as gimmicks or strapped to a mediocre chassis they are still good clever ideas that do new things.

The Doom online community is so varied that you can find modes that differ vastly from the original game. There are wads that play like survival horror, there are puzzles, it never gets old because they're still innovating. I may be a bit out of the loop, but the most recent FPS I really enjoyed playing through was the first Crysis. It was sort of refreshing because it allowed you to play the game at your own pace and how you wanted without favouring one style over the other, and the environments were really, really nice. As for multiplayer shooters, I've played COD online, and wow. It is just monotonous and boring. It's a matter of reflexes. The only time I've ever had any amount of fun with COD was one-on-one split screen. Timesplitters Future Perfect is my favourite FPS, and really one of the last of the really old school FPS games. Really the Timesplitters games were among the most fun FPS, just smooth and a blast to play.

As for modern shooters that look good, Battlefield 1 looks fun, maybe the last two Crysis games, but although the Doom reboot looks good, The name "Doom" only makes me want to play Doom. As in Doom.

Project Brutality+Maps of chaos(Overkill) honestly provide the best way to re-experience the maps of Doom2 and the game.

I've gone through Both Brutal Doom starter pack and the maps of chaos so im all ready for Ion Maiden.
Personally i didn't like Dusk. beside the gameplay, which it copied from better games, Dusk really has nothing to offer. Its riding off the nostaliga. While thats not necessarily bad, i wish it tired a bit harder and establish itself as its own proper game.

I do agree it's stupid to lock out BD compatability though, it just adds so many good enhancements to the gameplay. Like, it makes the minigun actually meaty instead of the fucking peashooter that's in vanilla. Also it makes the shotguns sound like they actually blow chunks out of enemies instead of just coughing lightly on them. And don't even get me started on the assault rifle replacement for the pistol, that thing has saved my bacon so many times in the challenging megawads that OBLIGE spits out for me...

Look, modders don't go out of their way to make things incompatible with brutal doom. They just make the mod they want to make and it happens to be incompatible because that's how the friggin thing works.

It has only been stated that the suggested mod has custom monsters hard-coded into it despite creating a interchangeable mappack would've been the far superiour solution (because of the theoretically countless mod-combinations!).

Guess what guise; I've only gone and discovered an OBLIGE preset that spits out maps, episodes, and full games that spits out interesting levels that are both fair and challenging. I've been playing through one for Ultimate Doom with Project Brutality and Ultimate DoomVisor and I've been having a blast. My version of this secret sauce has ZDoom Railgun Marines added; I think it's fun to always be kept on your toes not knowing when you'll run into these nasty OHKO monsters.

Paste everything below the line into a text editor and save it somewhere convenient, and then download and run the latest version of OBLIGE (7.70). Click "Menu" > "Config Manager" > "Load". Navigate to where you saved the .txt, select it and then click "Open". You then have to click on "Use" in order to apply the current settings. After that you can safely click "Close". At this point you can set a seed if you like by clicking "Menu" > "Set Seed", typing a 16 digit number and clicking "OK". Once you've done all this, just click "Build" save the .wad somewhere easy to get to and sit back while OBLIGE creates some sweet Doomy goodness for you. Load it like you would any other map-pack when it's finished.

I made a few using the same settings, or as close to the same settings that the earlier versions would allow for. I used versions 3.57, 6.20, and 7.70 because apparently they are the three major milestones in OBLIGE's development history. The letters at the start are the version of doom you should load with it; UD = Ultimate Doom, D2 = Doom 2, TNT = TNT: Evilution, PLU = The Plutonia Experiment

You ever be Evading bullets, fireballs, rockets, and plasma and think to yourself that the game feels like you're playing a generic bullet hell game with gore?
I kinda wish there was a mod that turns the game super realistic while still maintaining fun gameplay, not just a masochistic wet dream.

I'm playing Maps of chaos overkill and the downtown map pits you against a hundred demons as soon as you spawn, and includes a Cyberdemon. He's such a huge target that he quickly switches to infighting mode and it feels like he's your buddy. Its kind of dumb but the choas is so out there that i legit find doom scary again in a maddening sort of way.

I tried everything with my limited abilities (extracting the enemies, adding ketchup, adding brutal nazis from the Brutal Wolfenstein-mod, changing load order.) Nada.

On the bright -side: If noone brutalzes this mod, I'll have more time for other great mods and megawads out there!

I OBLIGE'd some endurance challenge maps. Be aware that you may need a beefy rig to run these. I only made it about a third of the way through on my craptop before the framerate dipped to 15-20fps. Take them slow or you'll quickly be overwhelmed. Quicksave often as well.
