Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
Code Vein
Spider-Man
Shadow of the Colossus
Monster Hunter World
Vampyr
Super Mario Odyssey
Gundam Versus
System Shock
Red Dead Redemption 2
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
The Evil Within 2
and the list goes on

2018 is gonna be such a busy fucking year in gaming for me. Plus I just quit smoking so I've got a frankly stupid amount of money to waste on gaming now. Feels good man.

This. With work and classes, I barely have time for games. I have a massive backlog right now as well. Yakuza Kiwami, FFXII:ZA, and Horizon Zero Dawn are at the top of my list.

Most of my hype is reserved for Switch (deal with it) games like Metroid Prime 4, Mario O, Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade 2, rest of the Zelda DLC, next Pokemon, Monster Hunter XX if they localize it, and the new Yoshi and Kirby.

Other than that I'm mildly to moderately interested in Steamworld Dig 2, Ori 2, Monster Hunter World, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cuphead, Psychonauts 2, Darksiders 3, South Park Fractured but Whole, Wolfenstein 2, Dishonored Death of the Outsider, System Shock, A Way Out, Indivisible, Bloodstained, and Ni No Kuni 2. Probably nothing that can't wait for a healthy discount though.

I was really excited for Middle Earth 2, but fucking WB ruined it already. Luckily a lot of the other big upcoming marquee blockbuster titles like Anthem, Sea of Thieves, God of War, Far Cry 5, Beyond Good and Evil 2, Days Gone, and Spider-Man look like shallow, mundane shit so there isn't really a ton of stuff to look forward to, and I can focus on my backlog.

Wolfenstein: The New Colossus looks fuckin' neato. The New Order was honestly a shock to me, I really didn't anticipate such an old franchise getting an entry that was so phenomenal. Everyone's always talking about how Doom 2016 was surprisingly good (and it definitely was), but TNO to me was the biggest surprise hit in recent memory, and I'm hoping TNC follows it well.

Also looking forward to Metro: Exodus, the first two games were pretty great.

Honorable mention to Cyberpunk 2077; still don't know fuck-all about it, but if it's even half as good as The Witcher 3, it'll be a day one purchase for me.

Wasteland 3
That's it. Each time I see what games kids these days are making I just come back less interested. Like Fallout, Planescape, Half Life, StarCraft all those sorts of games are my frame of reference and frankly the mood and storytelling and basically everything but the graphics seems to be a lot shittier with newer games. I'm pretty much exclusively judging things based on who wrote it at this point. Everything I just heard about Bethesda tier Fallout sounds depressingly bad. The new Starcraft I just ended up taking issue with certain things and then their retarded system of always online for fucking single player campaigns, just fuck it I'm never buying anything from Blizzard again the management sucks. Even Half Life 2 just felt less authentic and fun than the first one. Only newer XCOM games really, I think that is just about it for games I have wanted to buy in recent years.

I think part of it is kids are just getting dumber and a lot of people are getting worse at writing an original story. Dunno why but I suspect they don't read and so everything is like a bad action film or dumb soap opera and dumber people on the internet, as opposed to old games that basically are written by people deeply into science fiction and literature and such.
>>706908
What's the cause of this anyway? I strongly suspect one part of it is corporate culture, where each fucking person chips in an idea and nobody really works together or makes things mesh properly and on the off chance they do legal or marketing shoots it down. Executive meddling is the main reason why KOTOR and VTMB did more poorly when they came out as Revenge of the Sith was rushed and basically people counting coins got the final say in the artistic process.

I've strangely been noticing this in Hollywood as well. Like Prometheus for example just didnt even make any fucking sense. It was so cobbled together and inauthentic feeling I had no idea wtf was even going on. Like things are just becoming more and more incoherent.

SteamWorld Dig 2

Haven't looked forward to playing a game this much since Metal Gear Solid 4

https://youtu.be/trLZKer9uPI

Nintendo Switch Tomorrow
Steam on Friday
And PS4/VITA TUESDAY the 26th

Trailer has a nice little glimpse of the OST by the guy who did the Hotline Miami games.

Going to play it on Vita (and PSTV) so have the rest of the week and weekend to play SteamWorld Dig 1 and Heist.

A lovely, very very lovely, unique Metroidvania.

The first game was comfy, that's a good word for it. Digging, mining, and platforming. It was a great game to relax and chill with. I bought Heist on sale for under $5 but haven't played it yet. It has really devoted fanbase. Was actually surprised by that. I hope it makes the wait for next week really enjoyable.

The new game is suppose to be a good 2x the size of,the first at least. Especially for completionists, which made the first one so damn comfy.

heist plays very differently, it's pretty much just an entirely different game set in the same universe just in space and not on a planet at any point. the only direct story relation is a particular enemy force you fight later in the game. I ended up liking it more honestly. I preferred the robot designs over the first game and it had a fun little story. it's nice talking to your team mates between missions too, they all have personalities and backstories, and none of them end up being useless or overshadowed by a later unit in combat. It's kinda like 2D xcom with a heavy emphasis on trick shots and ricochets. Even though all the levels are procgen you never get a bad one and each level has a certain theme it always follows anyways so it isn't just random. and oddly the level design still feels almost like a metroid game. seems there was supposed to be more dlc too but they gave up on it, but the one bit of dlc it did have was nice.

>The new game is suppose to be a good 2x the size of,the first at least
that's nice to hear. I wonder if there will still be procgen or if they'll make a traditional metroidvania map.

Excellent, I was hoping for that. also heist has more of a story in fact. it's a longer meatier narrative, though still very light hearted. Just make sure to talk to your teammates after each mission, they have new things to say most times and you learn more of their backstory, while developing their character. even the dlc character was interesting though I think it's a little pricey for a level pack with some new equipment and a character.

2 is a direct sequel/continuation in terms of story of 1, yeah. You're playing a character from 1 who is searching for the main protagonist of 1.

I haven't played Heist so can't say much there. It's definitely just "Steamworld Dig 1" continued, though.

Removing procgen was the right call, with it not being a roguelike/lite.

>>707069
Absolutely agree with your entire post. Started gaming real early as a kid(when Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis were the most advanced at the time, I'm 30). IMO, the gaming industry really started to sag around the mid aughts when bullshit sequels were coming out that didn't introduce anything new to their respective series, hordes of zombie shooter clones, few revolutionary games and even fewer daring game concepts, and publishers gouging players a-la pay-to-play methods. Not to mention their ever-growing greed to absorb any and every good series and suck the life out of them. The gaming industry is consistently shooting itself in the foot, yet the younger generation will gobble it up.

I know, right? It adds to my confusion why some people get hyped over the things they do because I just see blatant rip-offs left and right, and the concepts are paper-thin. It's why I'm looking forward to games like the on OP posted. The name of the games first part is derived from Hegel, so it piqued my curiosity. Hopefully they will build upon it instead of relying on aesthetics alone to carry the game.

it's so weird how many people seem to play those games just for the gameplay. it's like when people used to play those skeevy flash games on newgrounds in school computer labs over a decade ago cause there was literally nothing else to do. there's tons of other puzzle games on steam that aren't shovelware though is it really so specific that nothing else is similar?

There's a lot of shitty first game in unity projects, Popcap Bejeweled and Peggle ports, and a sea of pretentious indie games to relax to in the style of Lyne or Monument Valley. I've been saying for a while that Japanese style arcade puzzle games are primed for an indie resurgence but it just hasn't really happened yet. The only one off the top of my head I'd really put in the same league as Huniepop for sheer production values and game content is Beglitched.
There's a Magical Drop game on steam that's horseshit shovelware they struggle to sell for a dollar, it's not that the games aren't there its just that ever since Bejeweled showed how little work you actually need to put into a match-3 game to make money the genre bottomed out in quality.

oh you want japanese arcade style puzzle games , yeah that shit's gonna be hard to find on steam or in general. all I can think of in recent memory is puyo puyo tetris on switch. That console would be perfect for ports of arcade only puzzle games from the 90s. There's a lot of neat obscure ones I can't believe never at least got ripped off by some shitty mobile game dev. if you count breakout as a japanese arcade style puzzle game you might like hazumi or wizorb though. they're recent and really damn good.

I'm still baffled to this day what phony games Gran Turismos past 3 are. Terrible engine and sound effects, too much focus on car models and poor customization. I mean cars do look amazing for their age and menu soundtracks are great but that's it. Also what's up with 20 Skylines and 30 Miatas, this shit seriously needs to stop, I remember reading an interview they're going to include PS2 era standard cars in GT7. GT are such uncut diamonds and I don't think I'll ever buy another GT, I care less and less about video games. nb for rant

Im honestly on the edge of canceling my preorder. People have been bomb reviewing Forza 7 on the microsoft shop and amazon for adding Loot boxes and Microtransactions but that doesn't really matter, the money they'll make of it is more important than a handful of angry nerds. It would be stupid of Gran Turismo not to add microtransactions, its also nothing new the previous one had them so for them to say 7 wont have it is not saying it wont later. Yeah im definitely canceling my preorder. I really dont trust these assholes and i refuse to buy a game at full price only to have to pay more later just to properly enjoy the full experience.

I'm not even bothered by micro transactions that much, at least Forza (Horizon) games are way more fun and have really cool DLC packs and cars. Gran Turismo is so monotone and boring to play and only lives up to the fame because of its heritage. I implore you to consider buying Forza, I did and never regretted it for a moment, you'll see what an overhyped trash GT is, and that's coming from a life long GT player who grew up with Playstation if that means anything.

Holy shit, i really dodged a bullet by canceling my preorder. You really cant trust any triple AAA game anymore. >actual period piece game, IE storyline and major NPCs are based off historical events and figures.
>skill based combat designed around real medieval fighting techniques

Pillars of Eternity 2. The original was cool, this version has a tropical arpelago, boat trips. Also Eder confirmed so that's good. It's not POE without Dyrwood's beefiest animal lover/stoner/farmboy. Aloth might be back though I'd rather have Hiravius. I'll miss having an angry ginger midget in my party but Aloth's has a lot more potential for side quests/character growth same way Eder does. Hiravius got where he needed to be by the end of POE.

I don't know what you mean by QTE "armored dagger fighting", but it's definitely not a press X to win system. The right stick is used to determine the position of your sword for an attack or a block. In order to block, the position of your sword has to reflect the position of the attacker. in order to riposte you have to have perfect timing after a block. Depending on the success on an attack against you you can be staggered or be knocked down. Armor or lack of on a particular part of the body makes a huge difference in damage, and all attacks drain large amounts of stamina so you have to be strategic in their use.

I can understand being skeptical of new games in general, but everyone who's played the beta says that the combat is actually very difficult, and the game itself is amazing.

Also I don't think you can compare an RPG like KCD where combat is just one aspect, to Mount and Blade, a game that is only about combat. Will Mount and Blade be better for massive battles, cavalry charges, and all out medieval warfare? Of course. But KCD is not a medieval battle simulator, it's a medieval world simulator designed to immerse you in the time-period. Saying you're not interested in KCD because M&B will be better would be like saying back in the day you're not interested in Mass Effect because COD is going to be better for shooting things.

The same old tired formula that was used in all of one game before the first Dark Souls? It's not even like it's a 1:1 recreation of Demon's mechanics, plenty changed between the two games.

>same old tired formula

You mean the re-use of challenging content to elongate the playing and test the player?

Yes that is an old formula. And it's better than every single kind of pay-to-win open-world content padding to elongate a game while it turns the player into a skinner box pidgeon who can scarcely do anything but follow a marker arrow and keep pecking it until such time as it has successfully guided the warhead to its target location.

Look at this years games. It's not about gitting gud, It's about not keeping the player fucking incompetent as long as possible.

In World of Warcraft's case it's because the game design has meandered, player power creep combined with neglected open world content has rendered the game outside of challenges, raids and PvP absolutely mindless busy-work.
Or it could be applied much more cynically, where a game suckers you in but keeps you incompetent until such time as you must buy loot boxes to compete.
Or you could patent the process of dropping players with cool pay to win gear into games with people who don't have it so they can advertise and be OP, and if only the lowly plebs slighted by this would buy such items, they would ascend to the privileged space of advertising DLC.

A good game trains you to be good at it. Old, hard, NES games fail at this to their detriment, but it is an entirely other matter to take the other path and let it become so easy as to require nothing of the player, letting the skinner box reinforce without the pesky resistance or negative emotions that failure entails.

Dark Souls doesn't leave you helpless or baby you. It strikes a perfect balance of a hard game that isn't an absolute fucking cunt. There's a reason everyone compares it to Cuphead and that is the entirety of it.

I didn't finish Dark Souls. Fuck off. World of Warcraft sucks to play, skinner boxes are the new normal.

I know people have been saying it for decades but they've connected the skinner boxes to a revenue stream, and it's not just on mobile or free-to-play platforms. The skinner box is real now.
If you're playing an easy game that isn't an audiovisual trip worth the price of admission, you're about to get exploited.

Just go get the first Dark Souls, read the manual and play it. Or you could play Ghouls and Ghosts or cuphead. Or try to beat your previous time on Sonic the Hedgehog, it doesn't matter.
When did it become completely uncool for games to require something of the player? This is the fundament of gaming in all of its forms.

Let people fucking enjoy things. Until they're being transformed into skinner pidgeons to be milked for cash
Fallout 4 is a bad game because of this shit. Infinitely samey, streamlined down to a soulless husk of a better franchise.

Dark Souls is like edging. So much frustration but when you finally attain victory there is so much fucking cum everywhere.

>Still no Seasons expansion pack

The cats and dogs has more content than previous expansion packs il give it that but still i think there are more important things they should focus on developing. Not to mention this shit costs as much as a newly released game now so its wayy overpriced. Still, im a sucker for the Sims and cant stop buying the shit. Guess il just have to wait. Its just seasons really transforms the environment into a living thing. Its depressing cause it keeps reminding me of Tokyo-3's weather. Sigh, i just want my sims to wohoo in an igloo.

Apparently, they're thinking of just not releasing any more new games and focus on providing a "live service" to fuckwits like me. So yeah FIFA will get a release once every 5 years probably more, more loot boxes pay 2 win schemes and always fucking online garbage and soccer Messi gold cards or whatever. Sims4 was basically an experiment to how much the dipshit Normie can take and we don't mind taking a lot of abuse. So we got four expansion packs in three years, each one is abysmal compared to sims3 expansion packs but they did somewhat expand on the gameplay. five gamepacks and they were garbage, you can basically do everything they have to offer in five hours or so. and thirteen stuff packs which are just stuff that looks like shit but costs as much as a DLC.

Also they totally went nuts with the whole sexuality thing for characters. Now i can make sim trannies and homosexuals that can impregnate each other and give straight women the ability to pee standing up and impregnate their boyfriends and thats without using any mods (which there is a lot of, especially sex mods). Women peeing in urinals and all that jazz. Game is fucking bananas.

It's one of those games where you set goals for yourself. You know, just like in real life?

One play-through you might wanna build the richest family dynasty in the game, on another play-through maybe a multi-generational trailer-trash family where no-one can hold a job except that one nerdy kid who go on to become an astronaut or something.

so it's an ant farm except less fun because you have to sit there and micromanage the ants.

i mean obviously it just isn't a game for me and if you like it then that's cool, do your thing, it just seems to me like it'd be better if they gave up on the idea of it being about you saving them from shitting themselves constantly. instead of playing this specific group of sims why not just be some omnipotent god that indirectly controls the town?

like that galaxy sim game where you just set all the parameters and watch it go down. i think that'd be way more fun than having to having to babysit a gaggle of retards who are totally unable to manage the most basic of shit by themselves.

The Sims is kinda fun on a "I have nothing else to do, let me raise a family".

I remember finding the Goth family in Sims 4 and causing their eldest daughter to break up with her fiancee to come with me, while leaving her behind to become an astronaut and bringing in the Simolians while she raises the kids.

Sims is one of those games that people tend to think differently of. For some reason they are stuck with the notion that its about 'forever alone' and having a pretend family but what is fun about sims is thinking outside the box.

One of the best times I had was when I made a klepto sim and made my house into a museum of shit I stole. Garage full of fancy cars from the neighborhood, house decorated with statues and pictures from the museum and town landmarks. Towards the end I made a basement to fill with gravestones that I stole which caused ghost to spawn and ZzZany things to happen.

I once made a "family" consisting of a white good looking hipster and an emanciated asian guy.
I used the stuff in the world adventures expansion to have my white guy plunder tombs and artifacts. I used this money to build a lavish mansion with a private museum.

Meanwhile the asian guy lived in a tiny shack and only did cleaning and gardening. He wasn't allowed up into the mansion (yes it was built entirely on pillars to accentuate the elevated status of the owner) except to clean once a day.

Eventually my icon of white colonialism got a trophy wife, so I kicked out mr Chinaman and forced him onto some other family. I think he got a job as a a cop or something, idk these games can be weird.
