The youtube shit has me most pissed off because about 70-80% of the channels I watch have went to making 1 video a month or are releasing 400 shit quality videos a month to try and soak up ad revenue. All while being so painfully PC at the same time. This shit is just fucking ridiculous. Youtube is worthless now. There are just a few lingering archives from channels now basically defunct. Otherwise the adpocalypse has made it unbearable. Because there is no good content anymore.

Fucking gay.

This might be a controversial opinion but I'm glad they're making less.

They shouldn't be able to make the kind of money that PewDiePie was making for doing such unskilled, untalented labor. I mean, sure yeah give them a bit of money. Enough to supplement their income. But in no way should any letsplayer be making six figures ever. There are some real garbage people that make decent money off of youtube and that job should not even exist.

For the real content creators that have gotten the shaft though, I feel sorry for them. But yelling at a screen while playing a video game is not creating content.

That bubble expanded, and now it popped. Move on and get a real job, letsplayers.

Yeah, i went through a period where i care more about the gaming industry than games themselves. I spent my off days watching YouTube channels of people talk about games rather than actually playing. I think i was depressed and unable to apply my self and put effort into playing anything. I was also highly critical of everything i played, comparing it to other games. Then i watched a video of this guy who ithink had the biggest video game collection in the world but had never the time to play them. I think he only spent three hours playing games a week. I thought that was the most depressingly stupid thing ever. It was just sad and i was doing the same thing he was, just collecting games like some obsessive adult and never playing like the kid i used to be. I had to change or lose my hobby. Thankfully im able to play video games without acting like an entitled bitch now.

>They shouldn't be able to make the kind of money that PewDiePie was making for doing such unskilled, untalented labor.
You would have an argument if revenue and viewership was getting reallocated from regular, long, low-effort, low-quality shit that references popular shit to original, high-quality content.

When PewDiePie became Youtube's biggest asset, youtube should have either realized either:
a. Something's wrong, youtube should not be trying to serve low-effort shit and we shouldn't be steering ad revenue to favor the generation of monotonous low-effort bullshit, lets fix the algorithm so that peoples experience of Youtube is the best quality content that's on the platform and offer a greater cut of ad revenue to content that it's in our interest they make more of.
b. We created this guy, the only thing he has is the viewers we steer to him, lets fix him or replace him with someone we can shape to be our celebrity.

But the vitality that's no longer getting pumped into Letsplayers, react videos, toy ads, and Vloggers talking about clickbaity shit/drama isn't going into original animation, infrequent, quirky content, or high-quality productions, they're finding the few pennies they're still able to scrounge getting randomly, silently demonetized too.

>middle tear games like Fallout, AOE, japananstanimation are all good not money money money shit shows, battlefront II is just Femnazi shillery to ram down our throats the fact that Disney bought Star Whores

But oh well i read a lots of books instead because I can pretend the the characters are my favorite historical figures with machine guns at the battle of Waterloo

So yeah games suck and I'm not cainical asshole I'm a Huuuuuge comical asshole

>CPGgrey gets $20k per video through his patreon. That blows my mind. His stuff isn't really that great.
It's a bit different. CGPgrey's patreons are essentially commissioning him to make his product, whereas Youtube has an algorithm that decides which videos to steer people to.
While I agree there are people who create more enjoyment per dollar, it's his patreons money and apparently they feel otherwise.

Pewdiepie's (and 99% of Letsplayers/X reacts) existence isn't because people saw him and decided to fund the generation of more content, it's because the youtube algorithm put that long, low-effort, easily indexed content infront of more people than quality content, and Youtube never fixed this.
For the record, Pewdiepie made 7.4 million in 2014.

While Pewdiepie shouldn't exist, someone in his position with twice as many subscribers as TV shows able to charge a third of a million for a 30 second ad ought to be making several times what Pewdiepie did:

What does his staff do? He releases one video a month, typically summarizing what he learned from the latest book he's reading. That video is a bunch of hardcuts between stick figures. He also has a 2-guys-talking podcast with minimal editing.

Staff has got to be family that he's officially put on the payroll to help spread the wealth right? They can't be doing much because there's not much to do. Like the wife drags around stick figures in mspaint and gets the title of Art Director or something?

If he can get $20k per video, more power to him. I'm happy for anyone who can make a decent living. I was just surprised it's that lucrative. But now you're telling me he has a staff to make him coffee or something?

Hahha. Jeez. No. The MSPaint artwork you criticize you couldn't make yourself. Unless you're trained well in a very specific field. It's meant to be minimally time-consuming, but it does require a lot of effort and skill. Probably at least 2 people on this. There's editing to be done, and proper syncing, which is very time-consuming. Sound engineer who also mixes all the audio. Maybe a sound designer for any relevant effects. Also there's likely a director of some sort, unless it's him. They likely also have some kind of secretary/scheduler, maybe an accountant if that's a separate person, and perhaps even a lawyer. And then, yes, there's what you call the "talent," him, who generally is paid a hefty share, in exchange for being basically a personal brand and selling out your very soul to a project.

Doesn't seem like this requires much until you realize that the production quality of many YouTube shows is roughly that of network TV in the late 80's and 90's. It's not great, but many put in work.

You're joking right? He's just using inkscape. You can learn to do work at this level in an afternoon. I encourage you to jump and give it a go. It's free and easy to use.

He's said himself that the whole design of the show is lifted from yatzee because it's something one person can easily handle.

> production quality of many YouTube shows is roughly that of network TV in the late 80's and 90's.

You're joking right? Please tell me you're joking. Not his at least.

Again... I watch his videos, they're decent. I'm super happy he's able to make good money doing it. But you're way overestimating what's being done here. Why can't you just be happy for him that he's raking in good money, without imagining all these fictional expenses? Does he need to be just-scraping-by for you to respect him?

Nope, I've actually only watched maybe 5-6 of his videos. He's stated pretty recently that the channel exists via a staff. ...Expect this with any YouTuber over, say, 600-700K subs.

And: as low as the quality of those videos are, you've never produced anything of that quality in your life. Or am I wrong?

You'd be wrong. Also, it's not that the videos are low quality, as you've said... they're decent quality because they're interesting. It's just that I don't think they require as much labor as you're suggesting.

But I'm still interested in what the staff does and how large it is. Are the details about all the staffers he needs and what they're doing what he said, or is it just something you imagined up? I'm just guessing that he doesn't need two artists, an editor, a sound designer, and a secretary.

Nintendo had obsolete dominance over the handheld market. Why would they feel the need to merge the two like that?
Any new Nintendo handheld device is gonna end up competing with the Switch now. It wasnt like Vita was the threat that they had to up the graphics. The Wiiu didnt do well but i honestly blame the marketing. I liked owning Nintendo handhelds more than their consoles. Im kinda sad to see them go now.
