MHW is only 3 months away and the new trailer dropped at PGW today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrz3zysD7c

I'm hoping this brings MH back into the spotlight. The 3DS versions were great but hindered the userbase in my opinion unless you already had a 3DS or a die-hard MH fan the normal public wouldn't be playing it. It just kills me though that no one can reach an agreement on cross-play.

I’m hella stoked for this game!

It’s definitely looking a little more normie tier for a MH. That’s ok. I only put s few hundred hours combined in the other MH games. The big thing I’m excited about is my brother will actually play this one with me! My sister got into Generations with me but I think we must have played a total of 20 hours together. I know me and my bro will sink as much into this as we did ESO because of how they’re making it more accessible for those not like us lonely 3DS and PSP owners.

I don't really care about XX (wasn't big on Generations) but would've loved World on the Switch and I thought it was a lock. Both home console and handheld benefits that the series has enjoyed at the same time would be a dream. Best hope at this point is Switch getting 5th gen's "MHP3rd" equivalent. Batch of new content, most of which eventually makes it to World G, but with a different context especially since World seems largely designed around being on a system that's constantly online.

Looks pretty juicy to me. Probably won't look this good on consoles though.

Not keen on the voice acting though. Also seems to be taking a different tone in general to attract new audiences, less light-hearted and more serious.

I'm excited though. MH is the only thing that fills the hole PSO left in me.

Either wait for the new one, or get MHFU, MH3U, or MH4U, as they are the final main games of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation (some might suggest Generations or XX in lieu of 4U as the 4th gen game but I personally wouldn't). I had the most fun with 3rd gen so far, but some people liked 4th better and some still like 2nd best. I would only recommend getting an older title if you're fine with soloing the game though (which can be pretty hard). If you mainly want to play multiplayer just wait for the new one.

Never played a MH game but was always interested. Horizon ZD looked like its might have had complex monster battle but left me pretty disappointed; hide, rope trap, pepper with arrows, dive roll, pepper rinse/repeat.

After playing the Beta im hyped, first intro hunt I just mashed the monster away to get used to my weapon, second was much better.:

>Track rock faced dino through passive herd of doe lizard like creatures
>Hide in grass set up electric trap behind dino and pop a rock into the back of its head
>Assumes attack came from local passive monster herd so its starts attacking it
>They dont put up much of a fight but one brave horned male from the herd chipped some armour off its back left leg
>I pop out from grass, place my previous electric trap between me and the monster and pop another rock in it's face to get its attention
>It charges me avoiding the electric trap but doe lizard still engage in battle chasing it stumbles into it setting off the AOE stunning my target
>Rush in slice its belly as it's stunned
>Exchange blows, dodge its frontal attacks and focus on rear left leg that lost armour
>Sweeping blow from the underside I sliced of its tail and it began to retreat
>Quickly harvest materials from detached tail and began pursuit
>As its retreating aggravates some sleeping electric turtle thing and now we're both chasing the wounded beast
>Electric turtle is too slow to keep chase and spots me as it turns around
>I dive past it losing sight or my target but keeping my chase
>Follow my tracking bugs to a muddy swamp and see signs of the beasts head protruding for the ick
>Without thinking launch full attack on beast trying to catch it wounded
>Landed first blow but was drawn into its trap and was left at a disadvantage in the mud and succumb to few blows not being able to dive roll in the tick mud
>Climbed out of the mud, hid behind a rock chugged a potion and planned my next move,
>Monster was also regaining health by being submerged in the mud so I had to act fast
>Luckily weapons alt mode sent out a scarab beetle to agitate the monster and it drew it away from the mud onto the bank
>Tutorial prompts me to ride it
>Do some pole vaulty shit and jump up on its back
>Start popping off its armoured scales like I'm pulling finger nails off of a stool pigeon
>Monster tries to shake me off but I grappling hook myself onto its back last second
>Stab it in the back of the head while its occupied by my cat bro floating around on a little boat in the mud throwing chilli in its eyes
>Harvest its skin, bones and meat like a good hunter should

If every hunt plays out like this im in fucking love.

Played through the missions, had to multi-player for the expert hunt. Favourite weapon so far is the twinblade thing with insect glaive, even though I barely understand the kinsect stuff. Vaulting up into the air to mount enemies, avoid ground attacks etc feels so cool. Thunderlance has an awesome charge attack, bonesword was just too damn slow.

I played a bit of mh4u on 3ds a couple years ago, thought it was cool but could never get far into it, controls felt very awkward. From the beta it seems like they've kept it very true to the combat and philosophy of the older games, but with less fucking about before you get to start kicking ass. Beautiful world, cool weapons and monsters, I'm probably sold.

For the Insect Glaive you're going to want to get essence first before you even start attacking. The type of essences depends on the body part and each monster is difference but the essence remains the same. Red, white and orange. If the bonuses remained the same acquiring them all will give you a 60 second attack and defense boost with earplugs which allows you go keep attacking through light monster roars.

I loved the beta and I kind of wish they allowed us to just mess around with singleplayer until January. I spent most of the beta just getting the feel of every weapon. The Longsword is amazing in this version and no longer just a giant tripstick. Oddly enough Dual Blades are now the biggest trip hazard but also dish out insane damage now.

I also don't see the hate for the quest handler this time around. I liked the Guildmarm in MH4U which was a big hit with players but I could only take the clumsy trope for so long.

Yule vacation backlog clearing has finally gotten me to play Dark Souls. Going in as blind as I can be for a 5 year old (and severely hyped) game.
The starting area was pretty straightforward and I blazed through it pretty quickly. Now that it opened up a bit more though, I'm not even sure if I'm going the right way. I'm pretty much trying out random paths and going by the path of least resistance, hoping there's a bonfire around the next corner. Having a blast so far though. Haven't had this kind of a challenge since doing ironman runs of Pilgrimage in Arma.

Beta ends tomorrow. This time around I messed with the gunner weapons. The LBG's wyvernblast is so damn satisfying Diablos eats shit running into it or you can stack 'em all and get a shit load of damage off in 3 shots.

As for the HBG wyvernsnipe does massive damage against long monsters while wyvernheart is more the classic bread and butter. quick and simple way to dish damage on a down or paralyzed monster.

I haven't got around to the bow but this video is all you need: https://youtu.be/Cg7dQvjviW0

Yeah he was a tough one. I was able to hit 8'45 with the LBG only though. The wyvernblast is insane especially when you lay bombs on it beforehand and paired with slice s and sticky shot it just became constant part breaking and staggering.

I've been using a mix of Vespoid and Jyura armor for Focus and Quick Sheath. Having those skills made the Greatsword a solid choice early on but now I'm about to make Anjanath armor so I have something to complement the LBG, my first main weapon of choice.

Also the handler is too damn cute. Much preferred over the goofy Guildmarm.

I kind of ironically preferred the characters when the series wasn't so focused on story and characters, like to me the generic Tri Guildie was better than both the Guildmarm and this new handler. I haven't played very far into World yet though so my opinion may very well change, but in general I think the old "hands-off" approach to story fits Monster Hunter better.

Series newcomer here, I'll try those things.

So I've played a bit on and off over the weekend. Still don't feel too comfortable with many systems, mostly the item crafting and investigation missions (how the hell do I start those?). Right now I'm about to head off to the 3rd region.

As for weapons, I started out with the hammer and it's awesome so far yet kinda simple compared to other weapons it seems.
It's slow as hell but the damage is pretty insane I think, like close to 500 damage in one combo. Also the charging move really makes up for the poor mobility, I can basically run the whole time without having to put away my weapon or anything.

I spend some time crafting a Glaive last night so I'm going to give that one a spin to see if I can work with its zany mechanics.

Have you been power charging the hammer? If you press O anytime when charging you'll store a charge and your hammer will get a white aura that gives more damage, more KO and some knockback protection along with slightly different moves. The aura stops though if sheath the hammer.

Gun butting monsters with the LBG is damn satisfying. Its crazy how its pretty much a stable now in my hunts because how well it combos with wyvernblasts, KO damage being the cherry on top.

Maxed out one of the hammer trees, and with a bit of handicraft I have that tasty white sharpness with over 1100 damage and monster crits. I love this game.

Which tree did you pick?

I'm trying out the kuku tree and the paralyzing metal tree, so far I much prefer the 15% kuku level 3 hammer but I'm not that far into it.

Got my ass kicked by the pink Rathian, got pretty close though, I had him limping but I got greedy and tried to go for the kill.

I have a pretty sweet setup right now, got lvl 2 of the skill that gives extra affinity when hitting a weak spot (+30%). Combined it with the Barroth Hammer which has high damage but -10% affinity. So I effectively still have 20% crit chance when bashing uglies on the head.

I wanna try a new weapon but I'm not sure which one, any reccomendations?
So far I've messed around mostly with the hammer and a bit with dual blades, I wanna try ranged but the ammo system seems kinda tedious.

I’ve almost got enough research to go find her, I know it’s tempting to be greedy when you get to those special quests and just want to fuck shit up!

If you’re wanting a change of pace sword n board, dual blades, or IG could be neat.

As far as the ammo system goes, I’ve not used it and I have hundreds of ammo stocked in my box from simply playing the game, it’s probably a lot of fun when you get into it.

I maxed out Zorah, Nerg, Vaal, Diablos, and Barroth trees. So far I'm liking Vaal the most. It looks rad, and with my armour set I get +4 attack and 5 affinity, 3 in weakness exploit (which gives me 50% bonus affinity when hitting weak points), 4 in handicraft, 1 in critical eye (I think), wind proof, and a few in evade extend and evade boost (I think those are the two). All up I essentially get 15% affinity, white sharpness, 270 dragon, and average Elderseal.

I get crits for days. If I do a single vertical pound combo (O button on PS4) I do an average of 600+ damage. Plus, it looks like a rad-ass axe.

I dropped the LBG for now. Its evident that slice s is just too good not to use making elemental shots which was the LBG's crown jewel take a seat. I'm hoping they actually make adjustments to it since they seem they're going to be more hands on with this version.

Until then I'm having a blast with the SnS. The back spin maneuver to turn back around is insane for keeping on the heat once you travel a bit from comboing and the stunning ability is surprisingly good this time around. I've been stunning the shit out of P. Rath and the rest of the HR monsters so far.

Been trying out some different weapons but I keep returning to the hammer, the combination of mobility and raw power is just too much fun.
I mess around with the dual slicers for elemental stuff occasionally but the lack of any attacks that hit high up (such as a overhead swing or jump attack) makes it kinda boring.

Probably gonna try sword and shield next, avoided them because it seems kinda vanilla but it might be a good fit for me.

Also how do I get rid of the blast status? Nulberries don't seem to work.

Rolling three times does indeed get rid of blast, as the other fellow suggested.

I've never been able to get into anything as much as hammers. I float like a butterfly, hit like a truck. The sliding somersault is incredibly satisfying to pull off, especially when it results in a mount, then a topple, then a powerup, followed by a five hit O combo straight to the dome.

Yeah hammer 4 life, I haven't used a single other weapon aside from in the beta.

My guild card says "Hammer Until Good,"

I finally have a tier 5 hammer, the zorah one, and blast is okay. I hate the negative affinity I am down to -17% with all my gear and shit.

I swapped from a 3 stagger build to 6 attack and it seems to do much better as I killed the pink rathian the first time with the build as opposed to dying 2 times with 3 stagger.

The vigorwasp spray has been so tempting to keep because it’s so consistently helpful :( I know I know

Finally at HR 13 the game is offering me more of the challenge I remember from generations. I mean damn I get wrecked by everything in the elder recess.

It’s so nice to have a game I want to play this badly again.

Bought it shortly after release, but can't seem to get the hang of this game. All the parts of the game are things I like, but I'm having such a hard time with combat, and the game explains everything BUT how to do more than hit a monster once and then watch your attack animation play out while you get flanked.

Tried the bow, but aiming seems impossible. Tried a couple different melee weapons, but the ones I had were so slow that if my target was moving, I'd usually just miss because the swing takes so long.

Any advice on how to start, or a site/YT channel with decent suggestions?

GaijinHunter does a ton of videos on the game. Stick with one weapon for a bit and just fuck around on low rank quests. The game isn’t a race and if you think you’d enjoy it if it became playable for you take your time and have fun.

I spent maybe my first 20 hrs of MH Generations doing the same few random low quests not even knowing there was more to discover. It almost feels like Animal Crossing when you’re chilling out collecting materials and patrolling the map.

TLDR take it easy hunter, do what feels fun

Use the Sword and Shield. Its classified as a beginner weapon because it teaches every aspect of monster hunter such as timing, mobility, items, slinger, weakspots ect. but when mastered its a top tier weapon.

One thing to remember is you don't want to always be face smashing a monster. Sticking to its side is sometimes the best option, other monsters you can even be safe under their feet. Time your attacks and then get out rinse and repeat. Every monster has opening and safe spots you just have to learn where some attacks like tail whip you can even roll under them and continue the assault.

Finally finished the main story. The final boss was honestly a bit of a push-over, only reason I died once was because I got a bit bored because it took so long and wasn't very exciting.

The 3 fights before that vs those elder dragons were way more difficult and intense, especially Kushala Daora.

It’s fun. I chose it because I thought I’d miss the Aerial Style from Gen. the pacing is exciting between controlling the kinsect for buffs and damage, then flying around and mounting, then doing the bigger damage on a felled beast.

It shakes things up a lot more than GS did for me.

Yeah he's pretty rough. Try to break his spikes when you can. He only does that deadly divebomb when he has all of his hardened spikes, so you can kinda tell when it might happen.
You can also try bringing more helpful items I guess (defense potions, flash pods, etc.)

I also got stuck for a bit and did some different missions first, also got the coral horn gadget for my pallico. Man that thing is good, once that lil guy gets going you just keep getting stacked with different buffs. At one point I was nigh invulnerable and shrugged of multiple hits from Nergie and only lost like 1/4th of my health.

I had a little trouble with him. First few times I was trying to SOS and the people that would show up got killed. Then alone I got killed. And again.

Here’s how I single-handed him, and didn’t even faint once-

In that cave where he starts, there’s a little crawl space to the southwest that leads to a different chamber. Nergigante is aggressive as fuck and if you crawl in there to whetstone and reapply heals/buffs he’ll sit outside growling.

KEEP HIM IN THIS FIRST ROOM!

If he tries to go outside, aggro him quickly and then lure him and his rage back into the cave. If he runs to sleep in the northern chamber of the cave that’s fine because it means he’s getting ready to die, just bomb him awake and then get back to the southern cave.

Be patient and he will die. That little crawl space makes all the difference when you need to catch your breath.

I just stick to his side or under him and attack. There is some pauses where his head is wide open or tail and any white spikes are prime targets. Don't bother hitting any sides with black spikes due to damage loss. His dive bomb varies with your weapon but superman dive is my go to for evasion. If he knocks you down while you're in front of him then stay down because he'll most likely headbutt after.

Oddly Uragaan has carted me more than ever has Nergigante. That fucking cave Uragaan retreats to becomes his own fucking thunderdome that allows some insane rolling action. Fuck 'em.
