What is your favorite videogame controller? Why?
Are modern videogame controllers boring? What could be done to make them fun again?

I was gonna say Dualshock 4, even though I'm not a fan of symmetrical stick layouts.

Lately though, I'm going to have to give it to the Joy-Cons because being able to put my hands where ever the fuck I want is a game changer for comfort. Playing with my arms crossed, one hand stretched over my head, or tapping them on my lap like drumsticks when I get bored feels great. I just wish it wasn't such a hassle to set them up to work on my PC too, because otherwise I'd never go back to the DS4.

The GC controller is fun and feels good to hold but a couple things about it are pretty shitty tbh.
>no 2nd shoulder button on the left
>d-pad is tiny and barely usable if you're not a japanese manlet with noodle fingers
>C-stick is almost unusable as a 2nd analogue stick

That controller just cannot fairly be compared to other controllers. Normal controllers can be used for other consoles, as long as they can be plugged in with an adapter or whatnot.

Even the n64 pad and saturn 3d pad have practically the same buttons and axes sets, and could be interchange with just circuitry issues.

But that snowflake controller could only ever regularly be used for gamecube(/wii) games and old PC games.

Haters gonna hate, but the configurability and precision, in combination with the great gyro and haptic feedback really sold me.
I don't play many shooters, though you could even get on a pretty good level using gyro assisted aiming. The typing function is also great, I often use the sc to just do computer stuff instead of games.

I have to admid this is the first pc controller I've ever owned thoug, so I'm just really glad I have something wireless to use from the couch

The Snes controller
The 360 controller is all right but FUCK that dpad
Damn nintendo and their patents on hat switches.

Basically the Dpad on an NES or w/e works like the other buttons do, its just a little binary on and off switch, Up makes you press up, right makes you move right, both makes you move diagonal. In the middle is a little ball joint so you can only rock the plastic around, making it so you cant press up and down at the same time or whatever. Makes sense right?
Well the fucking first generation 360 controller and most knock off brands have to go about that process ass backwards due to not wanting to pay nintendo fees to use its patent on the hat switch.
Instead of UP or RIGHT being a single button press, you are pressing Diagonal UPLEFT and Diagonal UPRIGHT at the same time, that then triggers just UP to be registered. Left is LEFTUP and LEFTDOWN at the same time. This is why those controllers suck all the dicks when it comes to old school platformers or fighting games, you lose accuracy on button presses.

How many fucking times in super metroid do I fuck up wall jumping when I mean to press LEFT away from a wall and instead press UPLEFT only instead? Too many goddamn times

Its fine as long as you only play generic AAA "action" games, it's perfectly suited to the universal control scheme those all have. The thing is those games are easily played on literally anything, even mouse and keyboard, and the types of games that actually require a controller its almost unusable for.
Never attempt a fighting game with it.

Nah, it's all about that PS4 controller. Works great on regular usb or bluetooth.

Touchpad is nightmarishly sucky and imprecise but it's ideal for scrolling up and down your steam library.

>Never attempt a fighting game with it

A regular-ass mechanical/scissor switch(laptop, Apple) keyboard is the most underrated fighting game controller there is. Numpad for buttons (123 Enter/123456), ASD, Space for jump.

Look familiar? Yes, the Hitbox controller is modeled after the keyboard.

It's only for N64. That's a rocksolid criticism right there. After the N64, it automatically fades into archaicness. It's not even like a wii and wii-u compatible gamecube controller. At least if you like Hori controllers, you can get one for other systems.

the majority of controllers are only usable on their system. interchangability is a unique trait, not the norm. the controller itself, on its own console, used as intended, without silly deflection, is amazing.

Why is it so hard to understand? You hold the left side to play a game using the d-pad and the center handle for playing a game using the analog stick? You never used both. Why am I still explaining this in 2018?

The Oculus Touch VR controllers are radical. Haptic surfaces on most buttons so the game can tell if you're making a thumbs-up gesture, a point, or even a middle finger.
Plus, they're super versatile.

My favorite typical vidya controller at the moment is the Elite controller, though. It feels like a real piece of premium tech. Playing Forza Horizon 3 with the rumbling triggers was sex.

They just never played enough games to know you never needed L with an analog stick game or Z with a d-pad game. They assume all games will use L and R the way playstation and xbox games do, so they think your hands have to be on L and R all the time. These people deserve to be put in camps.

Analog sticks essentially perform the same function as a trackball, just miniaturized and with a stick added for more accurate manipulation.

I doubt your thumb is more accurate than 2 wrist. They have much wider movement freedom, kind of fitting for manipulating small balls, and lots more support and precise muscles. Such a trackball would take some getting used to though, cause its unique and theres no intuitive directions.

Fuck controllers. We just need mouses and keyboards with haptic technology and pressure sensitive arrow keys. That way I can play Dark Souls as intended with mouse and keyboard.

Literally the only reason why I have a PS4 controller is because Dark Souls has a spectrum of walking speed that ramps up to a full sprint depending on how much you press your movement keys... which doesn't work on a keyboard.

Number pads are proper. They just are. Phones have them. Bank machines have them. Keyboards have them. Remotes have them...

Gee, that must be it! Just look at the wiimote, it's got that magical reasurance! Err, wait, it doesn't actually have a number pad per se ... but it could!

But aside from those two controllers in the bottom corners with the freaky axes, all those controllers are just one row/three buttons short of a very-basic number pad, the 0 could be another button. Whoops, the one with the red buttons already has one, and even it's older little brother did too, guess that must be the reason why...

They were able to foresee that they would need that number pad for the weapon selection in games like Doom, Descent, Raptor(call of the shadows), and so on. Really, you need to compare Raptor both ways, it was on the whole pretty lame without those 9 or so extra buttons.

Seriously though, intellivision did it, and since then everyone must have been immitating them, afraid to fall short.

My friend had one of these when I was growing up. After we couldn't beat Steel Battalion on the original XBox, he found a mod online that let him plug it into USB ports and he remapped all of the buttons and joysticks so that he could play WoW with it (and yes, he did put the hearthstone button onto the flip-up eject button). There were other pads and other bundles, and colors like that were used by other gamepads, and early ones could have been different, but Capcom did bring that quite nice pad which, from all indications, was exclusive to them. The original Gravis Gamepad was said to have had just a shareware commander keen game bundled with it.

You mean the "-Pro" successor? What parrallel port, it used the 15 pin gameport, except with a Y-connector.

Original, top right one was said to have been ahead of its time. For one thing it had multi pad capability early on.

What are you blabbering about? The freestyle only had one axis in the centre of the pad, and you didn't have to keep your finger on that. You didn't need anything to use that's not in between your hands and your ass, nothing weirder than tossing your torso around with the tilt axes.

Been using this one a lot. Pretty good controller imo. Has all the buttons you'd want on a modern controller, got a prety good feel to it too, and it works with PC/Mac/Win/Android and even the Nintendo Switch.

"8bitdo SF30 Pro" if anyone is interested in picking one up

Never had any controller other than the ps2 dualshock and ps3 dualshock, which suited me fine. Xbox controllers seemed more spacious to me, and the gamecube controller was just weird. I never understood the value of the vibration function though. I mean really, is feeling the controller vibrate really going to make getting virtually hit by a missile any more immersive?

Vibration is best used when its a gameplay element.

Like the Rumble Stone in Ocarina of Time making your shit vibrate when near a secret cavern, or in Resident Evil to let you know how close to death you are without looking in the menu.
