Are you as sick as I am of politicians not caring about the real issues? Left and right, moderate or extreme, they all are obsessed with things that don't matter. Race, sex, jobs, immigration, war. None of it fucking matters if I am going to die soon. No one is even talking about technology, no one talks about science or automation. The governments don't understand the internet at all, they just know it's important. Sure they'll drop a billion on a Human Brain Project every once in a while, but they spend untold billions on office slaves and other boondoggles.

There was a fringe transhumanist candidate for president in the United States last year. His name was Zoltan Istvan and he got no attention because he was not extreme enough. If we don't pull ourselves out of this apathy we are all going to die. There is a war going on right now, and it is not in whatever middle-eastern country is on the television news this week. The war is between those of us who want to live and those who want us all to die. This is the final war, against death itself. We need to rise up as one group. Whatever you call yourself, transhumanist, posthumanist, futurist, whatever, we need to seize power as fast as possible. If we do not take control of the world's governments, particularly the United States, and funnel all money into developing and distributing life extension and uploading technology then we are all going to die. Let me repeat that: if we do not seize power soon then we are all going to die.

We cannot allow ourselves to be lazy. We cannot hope someone else will do this for us. What if someone else does these things and doesn't want to share? What if Facebook wants to upload you in exchange for raping your mind for all eternity. We cannot allow these things to happen. We cannot allow our own apathy and the incredulity of others to slow us down. This is life and death.

Anyone who stands in our way must die. They want to anyway, if they are trying to stop us. Anyone who wants to live is going to support this completely. It's okay if you are scientifically and mathematically illiterate right now. It's okay if you can't code. But you need to learn. It doesn't matter how. Just help us to save ourselves before it's too late.

It's a nice sentiment, but let's think about this logically for a sec. Zoltan Istvan didn't lose because he didn't harp loudly enough about the current existential peril or technology's promise to save us all. He didn't win because he wasn't a member of one of the political parties that was inevitably going to win.

All governments and nation states are presently dependent on technocracy to a certain extent and won't do much to slow them down.

However, turning transhumanism, an intellectual and philosophical movement in a completely political one and raging on about how we are going to seize the power of government to institute our cyborg utopia is a great way to get us all rounded up and gassed. All that shit you're talking about is going to happen if and only if we can keep our cool about it until it's so far along that The Powers That Be and the great unthinking mass of useful idiots can do nothing to stop it once they realize what the actual endgame is.

I pretty much agree with this. There may be some chance that we could speed up work with increased funding even under the dramatic conditions of a new group's rapid rise to power, there is also a good chance that such an effort would just set us back.

what society is feeling is simply the beginning of growing pains that automation is bringing. People are slowly being taken from work not only by cheap labor practices but also machinery, AI is also seeing breakthroughs that would make routine administration jobs obsolete. There is tension between people who frantically want to work because that's the only way a lving has been maintained in civilized nations for centuries now, while the other side wishes to live a life of chilling and working some times when they feel like it but this cannot be the reality just yet.
Normal people however do not understand this and so look elsewhere for the answer, often resulting in pissed of government leaders squabbling over stupid irrelevant things, often sending media outlets into frenzied bursts of autism meant to convince you to fear some thing because it's literally Hitler or some thing.

/FTL/ knows our future is bright so long as we do not destroy our selves or go crazy with the spy shit. Hard times will come but after as technology advances and more of the world is united under fewer banners perhaps our true power will become apparent.
