Unable to enjoy weed as you get older? by Finnegan Fluffmire - Sun, 13 May 2018 01:51:13 EST ID:jtne3G5s No.4907654 Ignore Report Quick Reply

I'm not talking about the end of the "honey moon phase". Many of my friends and I could smoke a lot 17-20 with no anxiety at all, but for some reason (brain maturation?), many of us past the age of 20 start experiencing more bad than good side effects from weed (anxiety, panic attacks) What causes this, and why is it seemingly easier to handle for people like this at a younger age? Very strange stuff.

this is happening to me too idk what the fuck it is. im thinking part of it is when i was that age i would go to school ro whatever and finish that up and then get high so i was half sober half high but now i smoke weed as soon as i wake up and go all day being high coming up going down and i have more things to worry about in the future and shit and i get less exewrcise and have less healthy habits and shit

when i wait until the end of the day to smoke or something and dont smoke as soon as i wake up i feel way better. would like to hear more insight in this thread though im having the same problem

People do say its related to external life circumstances, and yeah, my life is for sure more stressful now but i don't think it has that much or all of the influence on how the weed makes me feel. I heard someone else say it has to do with frontal lobe development and being in its last stages around 21,22,23,

The younger the are the more you live in the moment, cherishing the present instead of worrying all the time and betraying yourself by hiding from tasks you should be doing

It's chasing the dragon.

I like Terrence Mckenna's idea of drugs dropping "dye in the water" for our mental processes, so we can see and analyze the currents. I'm convinced that nostalgia for what a drug "used to be like" is actually nostalgia for what our minds themselves used to be like.

You cannot bring back the highs of a person you no longer are.

Counterpoint, I spent years of my life hiding from tasks I should be doing by smoking weed. Now every time I get high the first thing I think about is "what aren't I do that I should be?".
Suboptimal.

I got sober all together about three years ago and I started smoking again to help with stress, and after a month of daily smoking I was just like, ya know I don't really wanna do this tonight and just stopped. Weed was really fucking great when I was younger but now I honestly have a better time sober than I do being high, as corny as it sounds. I usually just end up staring at a wall and thinking about what a garbage person I am, which is good to do every once and awhile, but it's not very fun...

Same. As everyone else has said, stresses in life, how you perceive your time being high, etc. I only smoke now if I know I have time off the next day, where I can turn off my phone for the night, play vidya and be alone.

Alcohol used to be an almost semi-mystical experience for me, and that just kinda stopped happening.

It's fun with friends if you drink hard and make an effort to really party. Otherwise as I've grown older I find myself trying to drink with friends but then everyone just gets tired and sits on the couch until somebody passes out. I prefer weed, and if I get anxiety like people talk about in this thread then I find one or two beers takes the edge of so I can enjoy the high.

I'm a disabled NEET who smokes all day every day and am 27. Sometimes I'll put off smoking until later in the day, but most of the time as soon as I'm out of bed and dressed I'm hittin that bong. I'm not a weed fiend like I was when I was a kid. Used to smoke resin on dry days...ugh. Now the only time I interact with resin is when I'm cleaning my pieces and throwing it in the garbage.

No, I'm 29 and still enjoy weed as much as I did when I was younger and I also handle myself better when I was really young. Of course I've done so many drugs that I get the anxiety and panic attacks more when I am sober. Weed is a welcome respite from that. Its the only drug I use on a regular basis, I don't even drink caffeine or drink anymore, the herb is all I need. And by the way I've smoked with plenty of old hippies in their 60s and 70s (and older) weed isn't a kids drug lol it's fun and high times for all ages.

The thing is, you're not really supposed to smoke weed (or use any psychoactive) until about age 25-26. That's when the brain ends its final phase of development. If you use beforehand, unintended circumstances or habituation can result. Because you're impacting the development of your brain.

It's more critical for someone 17-18 than someone who's 23. Younger of course, results in more changes.

Last time I was active on here was around 08-09. This place sucks now. I can tell everyone is old, depressed, and no longer gets any form of pleasure or joy from smoking. I’m on the same boat, almost to the point of sardonic irony. Everything they say weed does for you “alleviates pain, lifts your mood, reduces stress” is the TOTAL opposite for me. If I have slight back pain or a stomache ache, smoking makes it feel 10 times worse. I don’t know what it is, but any kind of physical or psychological discomfort I’m experiencing is intensified to an unbearable extend through smoking. It’s easier to just never smoke and I can deal with it.

I just turned 33 and have smoked for 19 years now, still in love with my first love. I've lessened my daily intake to about .5-1 gram a day, don't really feel like getting as high as I used to, but no ill effects if I consume more here and there.

Same here, 27 this year and I smoked since I was 17, I smoke less these days and leave it till the evening unless I have nothing to do.
I still really enjoy smoking weed but I am realistic about it now, I know what it does and does not do for me. I have a 6 weeks off and felt no different so I started smoking again because it was something to look forward to at the end of the day, what is the point in life without those small things.

Started smoking when I was 19. Now I'm 28 and I've noticed over the years that I don't feel as euphoric from it as I use to. I can't smoke as much as i use to since I've gotten older. It doesn't have that "magical" feeling to it anymore either. I mainly use it now just to keep my anger at bay since I'm bi polar. I mean, I enjoy it still. But, back then I can remember how much better being stoned was. But, that's life.

I'm 26, started smoking when I was 13. I still love smoking but I can't smoke a lot like I used too. I can be baked the entire day and be fine, but there's a threshold that if I pass by smoking too big a bowl or too many little bowls I get crazy heart burn and anxiety. Oils helped with the anxiety, antacids deal with the heart burn. But it disappoints me that I can't get completely blasted like I used to without freaking myself out or feeling exestential dread.

That's a pretty insightful point. I've been working on clearing my mental state and worrying less about everything. I've found good improvements in my high just from that.

A sidenote: Creative outlets and physical activity+exploration are the best uses of weed in my experience. Using the high to enhance something constructive and enjoyable is great.

I like to smoke right before doing anything at all. This includes any and all of my hobbies, woodworking, weightlifting, art and music, yard work, car upkeep, hiking in the forest. Smoking weed makes everything better in my opinion, but I especially enjoy smoking before hard physical labor or a task which requires devout concentration.

I was always disappointed that most of the people I know who smoke just like to get high and sit around doing nothing/talking/playing video games. I have a couple of friends now though and whenever we hang out we smoke a ton of weed and then go for really long walks through farm land.

Honestly I'd say that I enjoy weed more/more consistently now at 21 than I did when I started at 15. That being said, my life and mental state is also a lot more "together" and where I'd like it to be, I'm more at peace with myself and I feel like my higher order cognitive functions, my emotions, and my actions are closer to being in congruence which reduces my anxiety by leaps and bounds. Even when I'm absolutely stressed and my life is in chaos (recently happened after an explosive break-up) I still find so much solace and comfort in weed. I also take 1p-LSD every week or two, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Some people consider conversating and playing videogames with friends to be hobbies. You aren't superior for meandering around in a field lol

There's a time and a place for both I agree, but considering playing video games and talking to friends to be a hobby is pushing it. The other things he mentioned were real hobbies, wandering around in a field isn't so much a hobby as it is an adventure and one that I would happily join him in. Remember the last time you had an adventure in a video game? Oh wait....

Walking around is boring as fuck unless you have a good mate with you to talk about mate stuff and get a bit gay with sometimes in secret out in the green fields, the sun is shining down on your mates supple skin as beads of sweat glisten, almost as if to entice you.

my guess is it's either the reward-pathways of your brain being dampened by constant exposure to THC/dopamine stimulation or it's psychological. Either take more breaks from weed or get into cognitive-behavioural therapy and exercise self-awareness.

Weed has made me anxious and weird since day one. What I learned is to smoke slow. Load a single hit of weed into your pipe and smoke it, then wait 20 minutes. If you don't feel high enough do another hit, wait another 20 minutes. After the main part of your high starts to wear off smoke another hit.

You see what this does is give you a greater ratio of CBD to THC, because the effects of CBD last longer than THC. Doing this slow method will get you a relaxed, long lasting body high which is less confusing and paranoid as just ripping a large bowl all at once.

I hope this helps, let me know if you try this and if it works out.

I've been smoking like that more or less for the past year or so actually, mainly because I enjoy being only a little high as opposed to getting as high as possible, which is what I preferred when I was younger. I'm definitely aware that a slower pace of getting stoned eliminates anxiety, but besides even the anxiety, it's just that weed doesn't feel as pleasant anymore overall, even excluding anxiety.

what causes this? adult life. existence as a wageslave drone. believing the credit industry. taking on shitty loan to purchase consumer goods. mortgaging your home. having 0 savings. this all adds up to heavy stress - stress that can manifest itself as crippling anxiety when smoking weed.
get your life in order and you will enjoy weed again

I can't say for certain age has anything to do with it. Im 28 and its just barely been a year since I started. Now here's the thing: a year or even as little as four months ago I was able to enjoy myself. Lately I've sort of been burdened by stress (work and life) and I wind up hyper focussing on something or another. I use to worry about mortality. Lately I've legitimately thought I was some autismo and that my wife and my life scenario was an elaborate figment of my imagination.
Again the only thing that has really changed is my smoking habits and life stress. My tolerance now is super screwy thanks to dabbing and vaping. Most dont mentally effect me and I feel fine until I look in the mirror into my own bloodshot eyes. Flower still makes me feel a little stoned but only a little stoned. Never more. I was able to feel a little the other night but it took some light meditation to keep my mind off work and focus in on my high.

I've been to the "unable to enjoy" phase and then back from it. I enjoyed weed a lot for a couple of years but then got bored. Tried ocassionally maybe once a year since then and it felt boring and unenjoyable always. Now after about 8 years I surprisingly enjoyed it a lot again and the feeling was somewhat psychedelical and very free feeling of nothing negative. Enjoyed thoughts and immersion to anything I did and listened to. Had puffs of the same batch later a few times and always the same thing. I really do like it again.

What I don't know is why - I don't think my life has changed, but perhaps I have. Perhaps the batch is of some really suitable strain(s) and the ones in between were of some other strain. I wish it was legal here so everything could be known and reliable.
