Can we talk about psychology? As someone who has gotten back into pro-wrestling since last year, I've begun endeavoring to try and watch the 'canon' of great matches. I've been trying to view more varieties of pro-wrestling beyond WWE from different times and places. And I think I'm coming to understand what kind of psychology, for me, gets over. I wonder if there's anyone that feels as I do. I think good matches need to sell the actual aspect of wrestling. I think every good match (barring great size differences) grappling and jockeying for position should take up much of the match until an initial submission or move is made. Psychologically, when one guy does a move or submission to the other, this tells me that the guy receiving the move is too fatigued to resist or defend himself. Nothing makes me shake my head more and take me out of a match than when one guy gets a submission hold, say guillotine or armbar, and then they just sit there and try to sell it. Realistically, if a fighter locks an armbar or any submission for longer than 5 seconds, the fight is over. Because obviously he must submit or get seriously injured. In so much pro-wrestling they get good submissions and just sit there forever selling it until a guy drags themselves for a rope-break or they just let the guy get to his feet, in the case of every WWE headlock. Too often it's just guys trading moves. And after they do a move and they guy is down they pick him back up and throw him to the ropes! Why? It's stupid. You just bodyslammed him. Pin him. I also don't like punches. I think punches should be disqualifications like Japanese do. When I watch a match like AJ Styles VS John Cena and see Cena punch him straight in the head it's just ridiculous. People get knocked out when you legit do that. I am ranting, I guess, but I guess as a child when you watch much of this you don't think much on it. Getting back into pro-wrestling and seeing what passes for psychology so much of the time just, I don't know, I have some problems with it.

It's a curious thing to me. You'd think with how MMA blew up and arguably took away the casual wrestling audience, because of shoot style being what it is, that there would have been attempts to promote it. But from what I gather when PRIDE started getting hot, and MMA altogether, everyone who was practicing shoot style decided to go legit. So maybe there was just no longer the talent to promote it. In the US I don't think there was ever a shoot style promotion. And I think to actually run a shoot style promotion you need skilled practitioners. Like reading the backgrounds of Sayama and Fujiwara and others who were apart of UWF, they were skilled martial artists. Man I would love read/listen to Meltzer go over this history.

Me too. I find it by far the most interesting aspect of pro-wrestling in general. Maybe some helpful person on here can point us in the direction of a podcast or something that discusses it.

>because of shoot style being what it is, that there would have been attempts to promote it.

Tamura attempted to run a pure shootstyle promotion with U-STYLE in 2003, but it simply couldn't compete with PRIDE or the big established Pro-Wrestling feds and Tamura having suffered some big losses in MMA surely didn't help.

Serious question: How big of draw Roman really is for WWE brand? by Hiroshi Tanahashi - Fri, 23 Jun 2017 16:26:39 EST ID:/K6Tmye1 No.5773390 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Some claim him to be the biggest active draw right now. He is also apparently most over casual draw since Cena. Is this really true?

He's been shoved down everybody's throats for 3 years, booked as the strongest face in the company, and is constantly promoted and given new merch/catchphrases/accomplishments.

WWE is just a huge self fulfilling prophecy to Vince. He sells the most merch because he's been pushed far harder than anybody else for far longer. And there's a portion of WWE's fanbase that will basically follow whatever narrative WWE sets out

Can confirm. I manage to get a friend to watch wrestling with me, he felt sorry for Roman.

Then by the fourth show we watched together he came to the conclusion on his own that the smarks were right, Roman fucking sucks.

Not in this case at least. Mayweather and MacGregor are competitors in extremely different sports, so pitting them against one another doesn't really prove anything useful. It's just a dumb spectacle that draws attention but is pretty worthless as far as sport goes, the equivalent of a carnival freakshow. That's why it gets called a carny event.

>Watch Best in the World 2017 at 9pm EDT / 2am BST in /wooo/tube - http://taima.tv/r/wooo and /wooo/alt - http://taima.tv/r/woooalt

Three years after its debut as Ring of Honor’s first-ever live, broadcast Pay Per View, one of ROH’s premiere events Best in the World returns to PPV on Friday, June 23, emanating from the Lowell Memorial Auditorium! The following night, ROH returns to Lowell, MA for the fallout from Best in the World with an international television taping!

Christopher Daniels completed a 23-year odyssey at 15th Anniversary when he reached the pinnacle of professional wrestling, capturing the ROH World Championship from Adam Cole. Daniels’ win erased his name from the discussion of “Best wrestler to never hold a World Championship” and cemented his already-worth resume as a sure-fire Hall of Fame wrestler. But the honeymoon was short-lived. To ensure Daniels victory, Daniels’ partner Frankie Kazarian infiltrated Bullet Club and the Smartest Men in the Room double crossed Bullet Club to help Daniels capture the gold. That action has painted a target big, bright, and bold on the back of the champion. That’s where “The American Nightmare”, a man beholden to no company, sensed an opportunity.

Since reaching the top of the mountain, Daniels has been eager to prove that not only has he shed labels and blazed trails at age 46, but that he has the ability to become the greatest ROH World Champion of all-time. It is this confidence that Cody hoped to prey on at War of the Worlds. Jay Lethal earned a title shot but Cody was able to get under the skin of Daniels and insert himself into a Triple Threat for the World Championship in New York City. And Cody’s plan almost worked. Late in the match, it came down to Lethal and Cody, two men tied into a feud dating back to Final Battle after Daniels had gone through a table. Cody, looking to take advantage of Lethal’s knee that he had injured earlier in the bout, locked in a move his father used to great success, the figure four. As Lethal writhed in pain, Daniels went for an all or nothing Best Moonsault Ever. Daniels’ connected on Cody, winning the match and leaving NYC with the gold around his waist.

But, things weren’t so simple. Cody argued on ROH Television, using an observation by Color Commentator Colt Cabana as his support, that Lethal’s shoulders went to the match upon impact of the moonsault. With Cody in control of the figure four, he would be responsible for the pin on Lethal. Cody argued that the shoulders of Lethal went to the mat milliseconds before Daniels officially secured the cover and that Cody is the rightful ROH World Champion. Cody and his lawyers successfully petitioned for a one-on-one rematch and “The American Nightmare” will get it at Best in the World, live on Pay Per View! For Cody, ahead of him lies an opportunity to get revenge for Bullet Club, taking something from Daniels that means more to him than his career itself. For Daniels, it is a chance to defend his honor and to keep the ROH World Championship away from a member of Bullet Club, a free agent who could take the championship wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted.

Can Daniels fend off a Bullet Club change from a man who has been dishonorable from day one in a ROH ring? Or will “The American Nightmare” spoil Daniels’ fairy tale ending and take the ROH World Championship to a place it has never been? Tune into or join us at Best in the World to find out! This world title match plus three other title matches and more tonight! Here's the lineup for the show:

ROH World Championship Match: Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Cody

ROH World Television Championship Match: KUSHIDA (c) vs. Marty Scurll

In the wider wrestling landscape, where does Bobby Lashley currently rank? What's the best place for him?

I think he deserves to be in top ten discussions.

IMO: He's replaced Kurt Angle as Impact's best wrestler. He's also their most credible shoot badass. He should be their most protected attraction; he has been so far but I don't know if they'll sacrifice him to Alberto or not. He's "TNA's Brock Lesnar" but isn't presented as such a rarity. He doesn't have Brock's natural scary goofiness but a lot of his matches have had really smart finishes. He's more credible than anyone in ROH or LU. He needs a better roster than the one Impact has for him; his 2017 isn't as strong simply because of caliber of opponent. I don't care to see him in WWE again. Impact should just apologize to MVP and make him Bobby's mouthpiece I actually like Josh as his hand-picked play-by-play man

I guess Matt Riddle is the dream match but Bobby still has a lot of gas left in the tank, so I don't think it should be viewed as "passing the torch." My dumb fantasy booking idea is Anthem gets its shit together enough to have Dutch Mantell book a Riddle-Lashley feud a la Joe vs Angle at Lockdown 2008, with lots of Fight Network hype and build.
His new entrance music is actually pretty dope: https://youtu.be/lgvWss-AC3w

Yeah Eddie's win was perfect example of long term storytelling. It made perfect sense after Lashley had humiliated Edwards previously in the year.

Look at the way he sells the knee. That is world class.

Who was the booking team for this period..Lagana...Gaburick and there's someone who's name I forget, not Corgan, another guy. they deserve loads more credit in the industry. Wish Meltzer would give them some addaboys every now and then.

Al Snow was an agent (and he apparently just left with Pat Kenny & Shane Helms. TBF Impact probably needs young blood to help set up matches). I'm not sure if he was the agent for Lashley's stuff. Whoever it is deserves props.

I recall reading that the Edwards win was a Corgan decision, who felt that they needed to shake things up and Eddie earned that opportunity.

I don't know how to feel about Gaburick; yes technically creative got better with him in charge but he was a fuck up in literally every other capacity and he was complicit in Russo's secret tenure. I get the vibe that he was good at overseeing production because he was a Kevin Dunn guy but he was largely a hands-off exec who got paid alot to not do much.

The roster loved working with Lagana, who I think was tasked with actually scripting the shows and focused on giving talents bullet points. JB has also been hands on with vignettes and online stuff too.

The years probably aren't exact and I could have picked a better picture but what actually happened to these guys? It seems like there was plenty of talent that could be primed to eventually become main eventers and whatnot but it seems like it didn't pan out for anyone barring a few exceptions who brushed with the top belt for a run or two.

Wade Barrett
Drew McIntyre
Chris Masters
Carlito
Jack Swagger
Dolph Ziggler
Kofi Kingston
MVP
Shelton Benjamin
John Morrison
The Miz

and to think people still push the meme that TNA can't make stars when it's their wrestlers from this time period (and ROH as well) who are now drawing for WWE

Only Bobby Roode comes to mind and he's charismatic as fuck which is impossible for anyone to go and say "Well, he wouldn't make it without TNA"

And AJ is AJ Styles, he was a star even before TNA. Even in WCW he was a star.

If there's any truth to the rumors about them killing off Miz and Maryse's act because of what they want to do with these two, then not only did they not save love, these talentless fools killed love.

Erm, Okada would make it in WWE but he'd be in a tag team at best given that his flaws are all the things the WWE needs in a top guy (charisma, character, etc)

> An interesting note regarding the Money in the Bank odds is that all favorites won except the Usos, and they retained but lost. Their odds swung at the same time as the other winners, indicating that finish went back-and-forth. Another key thing was the insiders who do know were heavily betting that the women’s MITB winner would fail in her cash-in. So that means a decision had to be made strongly at a meeting that was known about where either Carmella wasn’t going to win the real match next week, or if she does, that it’s already decided she fails in the cash in. Normal odds are close to 90% that the person winning will cash in, but it was 9-to-1 odds for the winner on this show to fail to cash in, and they don’t get that long for that question unless it’s a sure thing in the eyes of the people who know. And yes, we do know Vince often changes his mind and there is no sure thing when it comes to short-term.

> There was an injury of sorts in the ladder match. Kevin Owens injured his leg, and off camera, had to be helped to the back after the match ended. I’m not sure where it happened, although he was slammed off the top rope and landed badly on the ladder. He did continue working the match from there. But in leaving the ring, it looked like he couldn’t put any weight on one leg. We got word late that night that Owens was okay, but he was limping significantly at the house show the next night in Indianapolis. He wasn’t walking all that well at TV, but he did a match with Chad Gable and while it was kept short, he showed no signs of an injury there.

> AAA had a big decision to make regarding TripleMania. The show was scheduled for 8/26, which is the same day as McGregor vs. Mayweather, and it appears they’ve already made the call to move it to 8/27. They wanted to get the show on PPV in the U.S., and that’s very unlikely on that day, and still isn’t a done deal since the people who got them the previous TripleMania PPV, Court Bauer, has no affiliation with them

> There is an issue even with the record indoor gate in Osaka for Dominion last week, as on 6/20, they once again failed to sell out Korakuen Hall. It used to be almost automatic, but they are running it so frequently and only sold 1,258 tickets to the first of three shows in eight days in the building. It was really weird seeing tickets available in almost every price category a couple of hours before the show at Korakuen, when until this year, that almost never happened, and now it’s happened several times.

> AXS released its full schedule for New Japan on 6/30 and 7/1. Because the Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega match went 60 minutes, to air it uninterrupted would mean you would need more than an hour with ring intros and commercial breaks. So rather than edit the match, the decision was made to air Dominion as one two-hour show instead of two one-hour shows, airing on 6/30 from 7-9 p.m. Eastern. The two-hour show will only have two matches, Tetsuya Naito vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi and Omega vs. Okada II. The unfortunate odd man out match is the Kushida vs. Hiromu Takahashi match, which was one of the best matches of the year. Originally they wanted to put Cody vs. Michael Elgin on as the first match, so people would see Cody’s win to build for his title match, but they would rather present the two matches with the promos and entrances and videos and such and make them strong, then have to edit so much out to fit in Cody’s match.

India is a shitty country, man. It's not bigotry, it's a rationale based off years of India being a shitty country. If it makes you feel any better, Mexico and the Philippines are even shittier countries so I guess you can hang your hat on your country not being as shitty as those ones.

Also nb for this stupid /pol/ shittery going on in the goddamned dirtsheet thread, of all places

>Bobby Lashley and Alberto El Patron have one goal for Slammiversary: deliver an even better match than Brock Lesnar and Samoa Joe have in store the following week at WWE’s Great Balls of Fire.

>“Our match is going to be a thousand times better,” said Patron, who was known during his time in WWE as Alberto Del Rio. “I have deep respect for Brock Lesnar and Samoa Joe, and I know they’ll give the fans an amazing match, but they’ll be limited by the politics in that company. That company won’t let one of them give one-hundred percent to the audience, they’re going to hold them back. Impact Wrestling says, ‘Here is the ring, go do your thing.’

not expecting either match to be much to write home about but the TNA match does feature a good worker in his prime and a decent one who's been motivated lately while the WWE one features a part-timer at the height of his laziness and a guy at least 5 years past his prime who's had like one good match in his entire WWE run

Is he correct? Does the WWE do a great job with catering to their hardcore fans but driving the casuals away at the same time?

He also speaks on present day WWE going in the same direction as WCW 2001

He must mean hardcore "WWE" fans because as a wrestling in general fan I think they've done more to push people away from wrestling than even casuals. Hard to imagine a wrestling company that contains some wrestlers I think are amazing and I've driven three states away to see yet I don't even look up the summaries of their matches anymore.

Watched Daniel Bryan and CM Punk wrestle in gyms of 40 people and by the end of their tenures in WWE I didn't even watch WWE.
