Edge & Christian by Boddy Roode - Wed, 21 Jun 2017 23:31:07 EST ID:cTs2uEVy No.5771643 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

Why was WWE so determined to split them up in the Attitude Era?

I was listening to their podcast and Christian talked about being backstage hours before No Mercy 1999 started and they were told that there were three possible finishes they were going with that night for the famous tag team ladder match: !. E&C winning, 2. Christian turning on Edge and costing him the match, and 3. The Hardys winning. And it's been said before that Vince was 100% going to have them break up at Wrestlemania 2000 until they managed to get the company to let them show off how entertaining they could be on commentary on the go-home Raw before that Wrestlemania. And as we all know the split finally did happen in 2001.

So were Vince and co. really just that high on the idea of Edge as this big babyface singles star all the way back then? It seems kinda crazy to think now that the company came so close to stopping them from actually being able to prosper as a team, considering they would go on to win the Tag Team Titles 7 times (in one year too) and now they're heralded as one of the greatest tag teams ever (doesn't WWE themselves put them right behind LOD on their lists for greatest teams?).

I mean, gosh, imagine if they had split them up in 1999...
What would their careers have even ended up like? And what happens with tag team wrestling in WWE? The TLC match would have never existed...

The only thing that delayed the Edge super babyface push (that the crowd grew tired of) was all the injuries he accumulated in 2003/2004.

Yeah get back into LU, we're like 20 or so eps into season 3.

TNA is a pretty cool place right now despite having another big talent exodus recently.

If you watch anything WWE watch 205 Live at least, somehow has better booking than most of the rest of WWE at any given time, I like SD now too though it might not be everyone's cup of tea with some of the wacky booking going on.

I like AAA now too, I really got into it and despite the language barrier it's pretty easy to follow what's going on, helps that it's LU's sister company basically.

Personally at this point old wrestling counts as a current promotion to follow too so I'm watching MNW shows in http://taima.tv/r/mnw

>Worst BabyFace
>Worst Heel

Does anyone even comprehend the level of thought Meltzer put into these Observer Awards they make absolutely no sense

And before you get all "They're decided over at the people at the Observer building" All I wanna know is why does Meltzer have multiple catagories that seem identicial to just good wrestlers but nothing for "Worst Wrestler of the Year"

Worst babyface Worst Heel how does one decide on only one?

Only problem I have with the Observer Awards is combining MMA and Pro Wrestling in categories.

MMA feuds and wrestling feuds are very different in nature. A wrestling feud's outcomes are worked and actions between the performers are entirely scripted. While it's possible (even likely) that some of the interaction between MMA fighters is scripted generally it happens spontaneously and the outcomes of fights are not predetermined.

This is actually some nice bait because people don't actually even seem to realize that half of those have never been categories.

>Watch WWE NXT with /wooo/ in /wooo/tube - http://taima.tv/r/wooo and /wooo/alt - http://taima.tv/r/woooalt at 9pm Eastern//2am London. Tonight on NXT:

>"The Sinister One" Aleister Black versus "KO with the Elbow" Kassius Ohno
>Ember Moon versus "Penis Fly Trap" Peyton Royce
>Sonya Deville in action

>📰 In NXT news: Former CHIKARA Grand Champion Kimber Lee has been rechristiened "Abbey Laith" 📰

>Kassius Ohno goes head-to-head with Aleister Black
>Arguably two of the squared circle’s most feared strikers will do battle when Kassius Ohno faces off against Aleister Black in a highly anticipated showdown.Since returning to NXT earlier this year, Ohno has made waves behind his rolling elbow, which has left his opponents staring up at the lights. However, Ohno has yet to face someone with the same knockout ability … until now. Black is not only undefeated since making his NXT in-ring debut at TakeOver: Orlando, but he’s been flat-out dominating opponents. The mysterious Superstar has routinely made quick work of his competition, putting them away with his devastating Black Mass kick.

>As if being the first NXT Superstar to take down Black weren’t motivation enough, Ohno has another reason to go all out against the disciplined Dutchman: The match is the result of Ohno specifically requesting that NXT General Manager William Regal give him a chance to prove himself in a marquee match. As Ohno put it, he wants to lead by example and show his friend Hideo Itami the right way to make strides in NXT. Which heavy hitter will land his finisher first? Find out who prevails in this must-see matchup between Kassius Ohno and Aleister Black, tonight

>Ember Moon returns to in-ring competition against Peyton Royce
>The NXT Universe learned a few weeks ago, during one of Peyton Royce and Billie Kay’s “iconic” iPhone videos at the WWE Performance Center, that Ember Moon has been cleared to return to the squared circle. In her first match back on WWE Network, it’s only fitting that Moon will compete against Royce, who was quick to mock Moon when she thought she was still sidelined with an injury. Moon is no doubt determined to fight her way back into contention for Asuka’s NXT Women’s Championship — The Empress of Tomorrow’s interjection into a No. 1 Contender’s Battle Royal was the cause of Moon’s shoulder injury, after all — and she has her sights set on putting the cocky Royce in her place. On the other hand, Royce has continued to impress in recent weeks alongside her iconic ally, and a victory over Moon could a long way in procuring the Australian Superstar another title opportunity. However, can the devious Aussie avoid Moon’s extraordinary Eclipse finishing maneuver?

So WWE are going all in on advertising every superstar to ever hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. They made a video package highlighting all 50 world champions (including Hogan and Punk)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsPwdrbZY2s

As well as an article and full gallery on the website:

http://www.wwe.com/shows/smackdown/gallery/50-superstars-held-wwe-championship-photos#fid-40110330

So how do you all feel about these guys? Would you be content with these superstars being officially considered as "THE" guys that's made it in WWE? Do you think it devalues the current Universal championship since it is not considered "canon" in the legacy of the world title? Is it weird seeing that the only current era champions are The Shield, Bray Wyatt, A.J Styles and Jinder Mahal? Should the title be on RAW since it's seen as the real world title?

>Do you think it devalues the current Universal championship since it is not considered "canon" in the legacy of the world title?
Universe > World. Figure it out.
Putting it on part-timers is actually the smartest thing they've done, ironically.
>Should the title be on RAW since it's seen as the real world title?
That's precisely why it's on Smackdown. It's already got history, it doesn't need the rub, it's puting over the rookie. Just like last time.

Pro wrestling belts are marketing tools. In an industry of fiction, ythat's objective fact. They're still important, they're still worth holding, they're still good for your career, but never forget that winners here are determined by script rather than ability and that one does not necessarily inform the other. Jinder's continuing a long tradition of heels who became champ not because they were the best, but because they were the most convenient.

I don't know much about or watch much Deathmatch style wrestling. Does anyone have any images of someone missing with a light tube swing? Or just missing any kind of deathmatch style offense.
I need something for a "Miss me with that death match shit" type picture.
Not that I think death matches are bad or anything, there can absolutely be really good elements of psychology and storytelling to them. Just a joke, dog.
I'll be monitoring this in case I have something anyone else needs.
Here is Okada in a wind tunnel.

Should DQ's and count outs still result in the champ retaining the title? by Drew Carey - Mon, 19 Jun 2017 14:11:20 EST ID:Q9Y0DPKk No.5768980 Ignore Report Reply Quick Reply

I don't understand why the champion gets the advantage that they can lose the match in legitimate ways and still get to keep the belt. If the champ loses a match via DQ or count out, they should lose the title.

It has no baring in any other combat sport & makes no sense even in kayfabe. We're not talking about double count-outs or no contests, where there are no winners, we're talking about results where the champ legit loses and for some reason is still recognized as the champ.

The Usos and New Day match would have been so much better if it had a definitive finish, but no. It's just lazy, illogical booking that makes no one look good and leaves the crowd angry. Even if the Uso pinned the New Day clean, both teams would have looked better than they had going in.

The only time it's cool to even tease a DQ in a title match is when you have a chicken shit heel trying to get himself DQ'd, but the ref realizes this and remembers that DQ's are up to his discretion and waves it off (like in the main event last night). This only works once in a blue moon though.

They tease it every time there's a title match in which a heel challenger can win the belt on a DQ. As we just had one of those (Miz/Ambrose), I'm guessing that the folks who want the rules changed were really impressed by it and want to see awful groan-inducing finishes more often.

Since RAW and Smackdown are run by babyface GMs right now, there's absolutely no reason why a heel should get away with constant cheating. The only exception should be shit like The Authority allowing their chosen ones to cheat ala The Corporation or NWO with Bischoff or Vince, but the GM's are just totally fucking pushovers who barely address the heels cheating. It's just bad writing.

Lucky you. I've been reading up on wrestling history this week and happen to have the answer.
Originally titles could change hands on DQ. Then French phenom & Meltz HoFer Henri Deglane won the world championship by claiming that the defending champion (Ed Lewis maybe?) had bitten him, resulting in DQ. Upon later analysis it became evident that Deglane likely bit himself and lied, which caused one of the Pioneer Era's many World Championship disputes (where different wrestlers were recognized by different states thus forming different lineages).
So funnily enough it's a rule that came into effect to AVOID heel chicanery. Once showmanship took greater sway I guess the worm turned. It's a useful business tactic for a multitude of reasons. It gets the heels heat, it keeps the faces strong, it opens up more storytelling possibilities, it can extend a good program to rematches or nix an underwhelming one without damaging anyone's stock.
Say that the Usos had pinned New Day clean. Congratulations, you've a) just neutered your celebrated face team right out of the gate and b) ended a potentially money-making program in just one month. When I saw the same finish I thought it was pretty smart. It even increased my interest in seeing more. With all due respect, it sounds like you made this thread because you're mad at a trope that keeps getting used specifically to make you mad. There's a word for that.

>The attendance for last night's SmackDown Live in Dayton, OH was poor. As seen in the photos below, most of the seats on the hard camera side were empty.

Yep. And the fact the ratings dropped and the fans aren't going in droves is no one's fault but WWE.

THEY failed to make new stars
THEY started to dip in quality with storylines
THEY chose to go public in 1999 which caused them to restrict what they're allowed to put on TV
THEY changed direction
THEY booked talent horribly
THEY put embarrassing segments on TV every week

Most people don't just wake up and realize they don't like wrestling anymore. Things pushed them away and everyone has a threshold. My brother stopped watching around 2000 when he realized Shawn wasn't coming back. One of my friends stopped watching in 2003, another around 2007, another around 2010 and I checked out around 2012.
