Here's the recap of today's CMLL press conference from thecubsfan:

>It was a short press conference by CMLL standards, around 45 minutes, and it’s all on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmAIkDslBkg

>Everyone knew what the big matches would be going in, and this was more about assigning them to dates. the two big shows are on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, both Sundays. 12/25 will be called “Infierno en el Ring”, and will hold a women’s cage match. Six masked women (La Jarochita, Sanely, La Vaquerita, Princesa Sugehit, Zeuxis and Metalica) will put their masks on the line, and four unmasked women (Marcela, Estrellita, Dalys and Amapola) will put their hair up. The longest segment of the press conference was each woman talking about the match and then signing the contract, and many took the time to complain this wasn’t a one on one match (more in that they wanted their rivals than being critical of CMLL booking, but it did not come off well.)

>It’s an unbalanced match, with 6 tecnicas and 4 rudas. It’s also missing those rudas who would’ve been “safe” choices for a loss, like Tiffany and Seductora. (Silueta, who hasn’t been around DF in a couple months, RT-ed a comment complaining about her and others not being included.) The timing of this match, combined with WWE signing people who tried out the same time as Zeuxis, continues to point to the ruda as the loser of this match. It’s not a lock, there are a few women who absolutely in this match who absolutely shouldn’t lose in this sort of match. Someone like Vaquerita, who seem to have no hope of even getting a singles feud, could just as sensible lose. It’d also be disappointing if the best CMLL luchadora at the moment lost her mask in a cage match instead of going out on a one on one match, but CMLL believes the idea of a cage and a multi-person match itself is a draw regardless of who’s in it. I think it’s likely Zeuxis, but I’m holding a little hope it’s something else. The rest of the card is the normal card you’d see on a Sunday:

CMLL (SUN) 12/25/2016 Arena México:
1) Astral & Shockercito vs Pequeño Olímpico & Pierrothito
2) Drone, Johnny Idol, Star Jr. vs Boby Z, Vangellys, Virus
3) Stuka Jr., Titán, Valiente vs Gran Guerrero, Rey Bucanero, Terrible
4) Atlantis, Marco Corleone, Volador Jr. vs Bárbaro Cavernario, Felino, Negro Casas
5) La Jarochita vs Sanely, La Vaquerita, Princesa Sugehit, Marcela, Estrellita, Zeuxis, Dalys, Amapola, Metálica [cage, mask, hair]

>The card is going to draw or not draw based on the main event. This show has the misfortune of going up against the LigaMX final. It’s CMLL’s choice. They could’ve just moved it to a Friday or a Tuesday if they thought it would do better. Instead, they’re just not giving the match any support. It doesn’t appear to be simply a response to the football game, the next week’s card is just about the same. The opener would be Pierrothito’s first match in CMLL since September. The press conference closed with Maximo and Máscara Año 2000 signing their hair match.

CMLL (SUN) 01/01/2017 Arena México:
1) Astral, Stukita, Último Dragóncito vs Demus 3:16, Mercurio, Pierrothito
2) Ángel de Oro, Blue Panther Jr., Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Bobby Z, Pólvora, Ripper
3) Atlantis, Marco Corleone, Stuka Jr. vs Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas
4) Carístico, Valiente, Volador Jr. vs Ephesto, Hechicero, Mephisto
5) Máximo vs Máscara Año 2000 [hair]

>Again, a normal card. At least one reknown lucha expert thinks Mascara is winning. That would be a silly self-defeating move to have a guy at the end of his career to beat a regular core member of CMLL, but Ephesto just beat Guerrero Maya so I can’t rule it out. CMLL, for reasons unclear, sure seems to be booking it’s veterans strong and has seen a lot more in Mascara 2000 than anyone else. It would be a bad idea for him to win, because most any other full time wrestler would’ve got more mileage out of beating Maximo, but we can’t rule it out. Atlantis could be feuding with Peste Negra on this card, or CMLL could’ve just been very repetitive.

>Sunday shows usually aren’t taped or aired anywhere. CMLL did tape/air the shows for the UG/Elgin match and the Dia Los Muertos. Neither card looks very interesting to me, but both cards seem as important as those shows they aired. So far, there’s no mention of these shows airing, for free or otherwise.

>These were the only cards announced. The Friday night cards on 12/23 and 12/30 might have big matches too. There was no hint of Caristico and Ultimo Guerrero. They seem headed for a singles match, maybe even another title match, but it can’t be bigger than that. No matter what Caristico says, they’d have them out in front of the press if a mask/hair match was happening. Even if it’s not, it still seems like a big mistake not to advertise what match those two guys are doing right now – they’re bigger stars in the moment than anyone who was advertised for a match at this moment.

>There was not a lot of other news. As anticipated, this Saturday Arena Coliseo show is the final show of the season, with the 12/24 & 12/31 shows canceled for holidays. CMLL mentioned the luchadors going to the FantasticaMania shows, and announced Yoshi Tatsu would be coming to CMLL on February 15th. That news drew great cheers from NJPW fans. Tatsu returned from neck injury earlier this year, and his matches and his wrestling style have been considered among the worst in the promotion. The hope would he makes a turnaround in Mexico, but they’re just happy to be rid of him in the short term.

>There wasn’t an indication of how long Tatsu will be in CMLL. February is the usual start period for NJPW trainees and there’s not one in Mexico at the moment. Tatsu is way too old to be a trainee (and probably had enough of doing that in NXT while part of WWE), but it might indicate a longer stay.

Got today's lucha news and here's the results from DTU's IPPV last night - http://thecubsfan.com/cmll/events/shows/00060000/00060784.php

>SamuraiTV’s schedule for January came out yesterday, with info on FantasticaMania. The tour opening show, on January 13, will air on TV on January 19th (and probably end up online soon after.) The first two Korakuen Hall shows (January 20 & 21) will air live on SamuraiTV the following days, which means they won’t have commentators or music when they air on NJPW World (also live) due to rights issues. The final show on the 22nd will have those elements on NJPW World. The tour shows on January 14, 15, and 16 look like they won’t air anywhere at the moment. Last year, all the tour shows eventually aired somewhere.

>El Proceso has a detailed story on Octagon’s lawsuit against AAA over the naming rights. The quotes are all from Octagon’s side, AAA doesn’t speak on it, but they explain where everything stands. Octagon is demanding the rights to his name, and also 7 million pesos (about $300,ooo USD) in various benefits and other compensation. He’s basically asking to be declared an employee over the time he worked for AAA, and retroactively getting all the benefits a normal employee would’ve gotten.

>AAA disagrees, of course. It looks like Leo Riano was correct, and Octagon did lose a judgement in October. His claim to have the rights to the character were dismissed, with the judge ruling the actual person couldn’t/didn’t establish they were the guy playing Octagon prior to AAA copywriting the name in 1996. This comes off strangely – even Octagon’s wrestling license is dismissed, because the judge feels it doesn’t rule out someone else actually being in the ring . You can see what Octagon still thinks he’s got a shot at overturning this on appeal (which was filed in November.) It took about 12 months for the first round to get done, so we may not hear about this again for a while.

>Octagon’s bigger picture idea is to restart the wrestler’s union (with himself in charge), to protect the naming rights of luchadors and to raise the pay for everyone. He’s looking to do it among independent luchadors. The name he mentions are mostly of his generation, some not wrestling much any more, some who actually back in CMLL and AAA now. He does say one of the goal of his union is to set/raise the amount of money paid for each level of match, including making sure those working the opener are getting paid at least 1000 pesos (near $50USD). That seems unlikely, but the interview seems generally to rally support and to get more luchadors to come on board with them, so a raise in the minimum wage is a smart thing to bring up. Like most union talk, it’s hard to believe it’ll go anywhere but it seems like it’d be a good thing if it did.

>Leo Riano’s column says Elite is expected to no longer air on Azteca7. They’re still under contract at the moment, but it’s expected Azteca will not renew it. As guessed here, Azteca adding Combate Americas was them moving on to a different sort of combat sport. The Elite “season” came to an end soon after, which seems to back up Riano’s report. Riano says the lucha show wasn’t getting the ad sales the TV company was hoping for. I’d assume this means they will also be off Azteca in the US, when they complete their run or sooner. Riano is certain will get a new TV deal and doesn’t even bring up the idea that this might be the end.

>Rafy gave his side of the incident with Alberto el Patron on the EN+CARADOS #3 podcast. Alfredo has a translated summary of it in the latest Lucha Report that I’m heavily cribbing from. Alberto’s story has been that Rafy groped Paige. Rafy’s story is he said “pass by, beautiful” to Paige and didn’t touch her at all. Rafy says Alberto flipped out and pulled off his mask, Rafy retreated to the locker room, and Alberto went in there to attack Rafy. Rafy says he didn’t win the fight, but the reports about how hurt he was were blown up. Paige later told Alberto that Rafy hadn’t touched her, Alberto apologized, Rafy apologized for saying anything, and they thought it was over until it got into social media.

>Before the fight, Alberto told the press he expects to be back in AAA in 2017, downplayed the injuries from the stabbing attack, and blamed the whole controversy on social media. Someday, Alberto will actually be responsible for something that happens to Alberto, but that day is apparently not today.

>+LuchaTV has video of them agreeing to the match in the ring with the promoter coming in the ring to make it official, and with both Alberto (quickly) and LA Park hyping the match. The general reaction, even from those were there, was disbelief that the match would happen as advertised. It seems incredibly unlikely to happen like that, if it’ll happen at all. That building’s capacity is around 5000 (mentioned near the end of the article), and a legitimate mask versus hair match with those two people could do two or three times the size of that building easy. They’re either throwing away money or there’s other people being added to the match. This time, the building didn’t look full even with a 2 for 1 ticket deal in the days leading up to the show, and with not much promotion for the show since the card was announced a month ago. Both men would be tremendously underselling their value and someone else must be taking the loss.

This could be an interesting match.

>El Sol del Mexico talked to Super Porky about his health. He’s got a list of operations that he’s had or will be having that’s a paragraph long, and may keep him on out of the ring for maybe eight months. He had gastric balloon surgery, he needs work on his groin, his sciatic nerve, his shoulder, and then on his leg if he loses enough weight. After all that, he plans to come back to the ring “only for a year or two.” He’d like his farewell show to start with a singles match with Shocker or Negro Casas and then end with a singles match with Ultimo Guerrero.

>This article is already over a week old, but a CableFax interview with El Rey GM Daniel Tibbets comes close to confirming to Season 4 of Lucha Underground in an interview about the network’s plans. The bigger idea is he feels the network identity is working and they want to commit to more programming along the lines of Lucha Underground and From Dusk Till Dawn (and presumably less reality shows about barber shops.) LU is specifically mentioned in the 2017 plans, pushed as the strongest brand identity on the show, above the network founder’s own show. My hunch has been LU will be safe on El Rey as long as El Rey is committed to its current identity, and it sounds like they’re happy with their current direction. (Conversely, they’re not about to sell off the show to another network if it’s the channel’s identity.)

>Mocho Cota, Manuel Cota Soto, passed away yesterday afternoon. He was 62. He’s said said to have died after a fall caused multiple skull fractures (though a brain aneurysm was also mentioned.) Cota’s organs are being donated, as he requested in his will. He’s the second luchador in his family to pass away in 2016, after his son Zayco died in June. Another son, now wrestling as Mocho Cota Jr., has appeared infrequently in AAA this year.

>Cota was rudo for EMLL in the 80s and 90s, with short stints in AAA in the 90s. Cota had big hair and only three fingers on his right hand, losing the middle and ring finger in a work accident. The “Mocho” nickname (“cripple”) comes from that injury, but he never came off as a handicapped or limited. He came off as a tough nosed luchador who was out to hurt people as much as win. Cota was NWA and Mexican welterweight champion but, as SuperLuchas notes in their obit, Cota seemed a guy more about crushing his opponents than winning titles. Cota’s major league career ended around 1999, though he would still work northern shows and pop up from time to time. He would occasionally promote shows in his home state of Sonora in recent years, and the SuperLuchas articles mentions Cota was working in AAA’s programming department at some point in the past.

Also CMLL Infierno en el Ring will be streamed tomorrow on Youtube. Not sure if it will be free but if it is, we can show it in /wooo/tube.

>AAA announced next year’s TripleMania will take place August 26, 2017. This is the first time they’ve announced TripleMania’s date this far in advance. They’re trying to make a destination show for the 25th Anniversary, with Dr. Wagner versus Psycho Clown also already announced. They haven’t quite announced the location yet. Seems safe to assume Mexico City, but maybe it’ll be a different building.

Looks like they're gonna try to make it a huge deal especially with a main event like Psycho-Wagner if it even happens.

>This news is a few days late, but we’ve finally got the post match interviews from CMLL’s Friday show. As you’ll recall, the (unofficial) stipulation was that Caristico would get a mask versus hair match with Ultimo Guerrero if he won. Caristico won, and CMLL cut away from the show before either man could talk about that stipulation, and might have not allowed talk at all in front of the crowd. Backstage, the message was clearer. Carsitico said he’d like to have the match at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. Ultimo Guerrero declared he said he’d do the match if Caristico won, but never said when, just that it’ll happen some day. CMLL has downplayed this entire thing, which very much suggests this is an idea Caristico is pitching CMLL and nothing that’s been confirmed. File it in the back of your head for March, but don’t count on quite yet.

Would be a good main event for Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. Also here's the lineups for AAA's TV tapings after Guerra de Titanes - http://www.thecubsfan.com/cmll/2016/12/27/01272017-aaa-tv-lineup-toluca/ and http://www.thecubsfan.com/cmll/2016/12/29/02102017-aaa-tv-lineup-cuautitlan/

>Lucha Underground lead writer Chris DeJoseph was on Kocosports’s Lucha Underground video review this past week. It was a good conversation, though no huge revelations. DeJoseph and Van Wagenen seem to try to wait for episodes where they have a good story about to do these sort of interviews. Last week’s LU episode has the bathroom fight between Fenix & Aerostar versus the Snake Tribe. DeJoseph talked about watching them, led by vignette director Skip Chaisson, film the scene for hours, going home, coming back in the next day, and finding them still filming that scene. He estimated the filming of that segment took eight hours over two days. This tells me I do not have the patience to work on a TV show, because that sounds like forever for what seemed to be a three minute scene. Another great random factoid is Kobra Moon’s throne was created “by the guy from GWAR.”

>There were some of the usual topics. DeJoseph was asked basically “why Sexy Star?”, and said she has an amazing amount of chemistry, she connected well with her audience, and her character is just cool. He also did the usual defense of women fighting men, though noted he prefered it more when they were doing wrestling moves than men punching women in the face or sexual stuff. When DeJoseph came on board, El Rey had the concept of 7 tribes of luchadors and people representing each tribe, and it was up to him and his staff to fill in anything else. He knows how they’d get back to that idea if they had to end it, but it didn’t sound like he was going to have to do that any time soon. DeJoseph mentioned, in the context of the wrestlers having say in their programs, that Marty and Killshot’s feud was originally going to end in Season 2, but the wrestlers thought they could do more with it and so it lasted to their big Season 3 match instead.

>Lucha Underground & Johnny Mundo appear in a new Slim Jim commercial. This is a nice deal for the promotion, especially if it shows up more than just on Twitter. On another Lucha Underground note, no one with the show or with El Rey has said anything more about the 01/11 show being the mid-season finale. That seems like an announcement which should be followed by a press release. They don’t send those things to me, but I haven’t seen them show up elsewhere.

Why did nobody talk about this

Lucha Memes and CMLL will do a show together on a Friday in Arena Mexico. That's pretty exciting. I don't know if the fantasticamania people will be back by then but if not then Dani can fill that show up with good Indy guys assuming he gets the freedom to do so. Black Terry and Negro Navarro could realistically appear too considering they have some CMLL titles now.

The two matches announced so far for that are Hechicero vs Dr. Cerbero, which will be the main event and about a week after Hechicero main events a Fantastica Mania show. Also Silueta will defend the CMLL-Reina International Junior Championship against Keira, which according to thecubfan is the first title match since 2015, which was also against Keira.

I didn't realize this was happening so soon, the only thing I could see going wrong is CMLL inserting a ton of shit guys into the matches and the regular Chairo fans don't turn up in Arena Mexico so the non-regulars don't get reactions. Both don't seem incredibly likely though, so I've got a very good feeling about this.

They just added Raymond Rowe vs. Rush for that Lucha Memes show apparently.

>+LuchaTV released a video confrontation setting up that last match - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_X8VXjka1o. There’s a couple extra tidbits: that match, one more match and some bonus content will be sold via +LuchaTV’s channel for 50 pesos, or about $2.33 USD. (Presumably, it’s a match not yet announced, or they would’ve just listed.) This is obviously an experiment to see if it’ll work, while also making sure people still have to show up to see the complete show.

>The other hinted at deal is in Lucha Memes saying this is a part of a deal with CMLL & ROH which will extend for the whole weekend. The implication is Rowe will be working the Friday CMLL Arena Mexico show (and maybe even the Saturday Arena Coliseo show), before the Chairo show. Lucha Memes’ Dhani Ledesma has hinted at some some tie up with CMLL for a while and this would make sense for both sides: it’s a lot most cost effective for both promotions if there’s some sort of talent sharing agreement, Lucha Memes gets access to ROH wrestlers, CMLL gets someone who actually knows the ROH wrestlers. We’ll have to see how it works in practice.

Day 1 results for Fantastica Mania are up - http://strongstylestory.tumblr.com/post/155809115166/fantasticamania-night-1-1132017-juice

>El Rey held their presentation as part of the semiannual TCA meetings. There didn’t seem to be any specific Lucha Underground announcements, though the network head did mention they were happy with the audience it’s delivered and they want it to remain seasonal, not year round like WWE. El Rey’s point of emphasis was shifting the network towards more male oriented programming. (Reporters met the compassion to UFC-era Spike.) They announced two new shows – “Man At Arms” (8 one hour weapon crafting episodes, based on a YouTube series) and “Rite of Passage” (12 part doc, man goes around world for that thing in the title.) Both shows feel a lot like Lucha Underground. They’re listed as airing “first half of 2017”. It’d make sense for LU to air the same time to help people know the new shows exist, but first half of 2017 and Summer 2017 have only a small overlap.

Lots of news today:

>CMLL Informa actually had news this week. I’m confused too. The biggest news was the announcement of this year’s Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. It’ll take place Friday March 17th. Villano III will be honored. He was interviewed at the end of Informa and in tears over the honor. Villano III is obviously worthy of being recognized by CMLL. He was chosen specifically for this year because this show will be exactly 17 years since his famous mask match with Atlantis.

>This is far earlier than CMLL usually announces a major show and is good news to anyone who might want to make a trip to Arena Mexico from a long way away. We have no idea what will main event the show yet (though Blue Panther Jr. & Ripper seem to be feuding towards this point), and I’m not sure if if any indie promotions will be running around Mexico City that weekend, but H2L is usually one of the best CMLL shows of the year and most attended. If you want to attend a loud CMLL show, you’ve got two months notice instead of the usual two week notice.

>CMLL Informa also had an announcement of Astral moving up to the main division. They explained Paco Alonso himself gave the approval. Astral’s last match as a mini will be this Sunday, and then he’ll be start in the main division on February 10th (Friday). Astral relinquished the CMLL Minis championship on Wednesday as part of this move. There was no word on how they would determine a new champion,

>Astral’s technically the second person to move from the mini division to the main division in the last year, but we don’t think of Principe Diamante as a mini because he rarely appeared before winning this year’s bodybuilding contest. Principe Diamante has amusingly lost every single match he has had since re-debuting. CMLL midcard booking is fairly random, but that seems to be the welcoming pattern for minis moving to the main division. When Demus moved to the main roster, he was the lowest rudo on the totem pole, and eventually felt the situation was so bad that he’d rather just move back to the minis division. It’s not impossible to do well, Virus has made a name for himself, but moving form the minis to the main division is just the start of the battle.

>Informa aired a video of Ray Rowe highlights, and confirmed he’d be wrestling on the 01/27 CMLL Arena Mexico show a couple days prior to the Lucha Memes show. Lucha Memes had been hinting at that for a while, with the idea that it’s the start of a pattern of CMLL/ROH/Lucha Memes talent sharing.

>WWE recently sent out a survey to Mexican subscribers of the WWE Network, asking them questions including their interest in lucha libre programming on their network. AAA & CMLL were name checked (and the only two name checked.) WWE routinely sends out these surveys to different countries to gauge interest in other promotions, and there’s rumors they will be adding outside promotions to their service in 2017. This is the first time CMLL & AAA have been brought up. Even if CMLL & AAA wanted to get on the WWE Network (and there’s no indication of that), both have existing deals that would make it tough for them move their shows onto any new service in the short term.

>The debut of the Blue Demon series in the US, aired on both Univision and Unimas, had 1.7 million viewers. There were 1.3 million watching on Univsion (more than ABC & CBS among 18-34) and 400K on Unimas. The show is airing on Unimas nightly so far, and we may be able to find out how it’s doing later; Univision posts it’s ratings on Tuesdays. This show probably will end up with enough visibility that it would increase in interest in a Blue Demon luchador, but Blue Demon Jr. wants nothing to do with it and there’s no one else to take advantage.

>The chain of Plaza Sendero malls often host lucha events. A few are hosting them next week. What’s odd about them are the main events: Ciudad Juarez has Taurus (quit AAA) & Gronda (AAA?) vs Cibernetico (quit AAA) & Elegido (AAA). That probably isn’t going to be allowed unless people have quit or un-quit. Los Mochis has Intocable in Cibernetico’s spot, Toluca has Monster & Murder vs Intocable & Elegido.

>The AAA show last night in San Luis Potosi looks like a sellout. Ayako Hamada is back in Mexico and was with the Perros del Mal. Not sure if that means she’s back in AAA for the moment, though the Apaches vs Ayako & Anyone is much better than another Apaches vs Chessman & Averno match.

>Wrestling streaming service FloSlam put up a press release, noting they’re missing lucha libre programming on their network and announced they were adding Pro Wrestling Revolution out of northern California and Lucha Future out of the UK. PWR has been running iPPVs on FiteTV, usually with a couple big lucha names (Caristico’s their current champion) and locals. Lucha Forever is using a lot of familiar (and talented) wrestlers from the UK scene, some who trained at the lucha school in London, but not anyone who would be considered primarily a luchador and appear to be running a normal indie card. (Lucha Forever swears their name will make sense when they run their first show.) Calling Lucha Forever something that fills a lucha libre gap is dumb: no one who looks at their lineup will believe that, it distracts from the actual good matches they’re promising, and it’s just generally patronizing. PWR is a good first step to having some lucha on the service. The press release says it’s a multi-show deal, and it sounds like it’s only a deal for shows from this point forward. I’d be more interested if it included the back library too. PWR’s first show will be on 02/25 with Ultimo Dragon vs Vaquero Fantasma and Ultimo Panda vs Kikutaro.

>Papagayo Adventure at Acapulco has Cavernario vs Valiente vs Flamita vs Jack Evans as a main event. Whoever’s booking those shows is booking a lot of indie dream matches.

On one hand, good, fuck AAA if they aren't gonna push great wrestlers like Pentagon and Daga, especially since Pentagon being a top guy in AAA would be an easy way for American/foreign fans who love LU to get interested in AAA proper. Now he can do what he wants and make better money; this may have something to do with him taking a booking as "Pentagon Dark" recently, since that's a LU copyright and not a AAA one, I'd presume.

On the other hand, Joe Lider is now the only Perro Del Mal left, and that's very, very sad. Joe's great, but the stable could've been so much more if things had gone differently, like if Perrito lived (RIP).

On a more overall positive note, The Crash has been really fun lately, one of the most entertaining lucha indies by far with their crazy cards and use of non-Mexican indie talent.

So what happened next is that Lucha Brothers won, and then Konnan came out and made a match between Psicosis/Super Crazy and the Hardys for the The Crash tag titles and said Lucha Brothers get the first defense against the winners, who ended up being the Hardys. So Jeff & Matt vs Penta & Fenix down the line in The Crash.

I went to the LU NYCC panel and the one thing that stuck out to me is how fucking smug Dorian comes off as. Konnan can be a bit of a dick but there's nothing that he said when he shot on AAA on MLW that struck me as out of the realm of possibility. It's amazing how badly they screwed up their attempt to enter the US market.

Makes me wonder if, with the latest on the WWE surveying viewers about AAA and CMLL, if AAA would take a network deal like ICW. Might create issues with LU.

I hope this means Pentagon...er...Penta does more indies in the Northeast within driving distance. I'm dying to see the guy live. Wish Northeast Wrestling would get him.

Honestly the guy who gains the most in terms of opportunity here is Daga. He was the original indie darling before AAA scooped him up, and he stands to gain more from Konnan's connections to US indies than Pentagon and Fenix do. I'm dying to see him do well and am kind of relieved in general - seeing the treatment the Perros received in AAA lately was really disheartening.

>the one thing that stuck out to me is how fucking smug Dorian comes off as.

Konnan says he has a million stories of arranging for one of his wrestlers to go meet Dorian in his office, and they'll arrange for early in the day, say 10am. The wrestler will arrive on time and then be asked to sit and wait in the hall. And then 5 hours will go by. And the wrestler will ask to leave or go somewhere else until Dorian is ready, and they'll be told no, they must wait.

I don't know if that's supposed to be come crazy Vince McMahon style power psychology move, or just the AAA office being fucked dicks, but Konnan swears you can ask multiple people who've been in AAA and they'll say they've either had that happen to them or had similar stuff occur.

Konnan said it would drive him nuts because he's trying to build business relationships with these people and Dorian/the office is more concerned about making them feel weak and showing them "who the boss is".

It's even more appalling when you know one of the main reasons Triple A was formed was out of the CMLL office being dicks to the underneath talent. Sadly that's an all too common story in wrestling.

AAA did nothing wrong

Pentagon got all of the opportunities but never got himself that over because he's not a particularly good wrestler. They booked him against Psycho Clown (the top guy) in a singles match and he had no idea what to do, if you can't work a good match with the top guy you have no use in a fed. Not to mention he got greedy for american bucks and would no-show the dates AAA would book him

On the other hand a guy like Pagano got in, worked hard and had a bunch of insane fights with the top guy, got himself over and main evented triplemania not even a year into his run and now he's scheduled for a big tecnico push and feud with Mesias this year

Pentagon only has himself to blame and nothing of value was lost for AAA

Here's the results from AAA Guerra de Titanes - http://thecubsfan.com/cmll/events/shows/00061000/00061357.php

Also here's Lucha Blog's take on the jump from AAA:

>As far as I can tell, no one said they were quitting at AAA, but that’s obviously the implication. Pentagon would only change his name if he was leaving – AAA owns the name, and trademarked Cero Miedo when they previously were scared of him leaving – and showing up on a Konnan booked promotion in 2017 is pretty much handing your resignation to AAA. It’s notable they had the Perros del Mal gear with them, since that also takes the most popular stable in AAA.

>Daga & Pentagon are booked on the next two AAA TV tapings, and Garza is booked on the first one, next Friday. That show on Friday in Toluca will might be the first time we get an idea of what’s going on. There probably will be questions asked if AAA holds a TripleMania press conference on Tuesday as ESPN Mexico reported.

>This is a significant blow to AAA if this is permanent (and really, all we have is an in-ring bit.) The promotion is already low on names and stars, and losing Pentagon in particular messes up more of their main events. It’s not clear if AAA was told in advance: Pentagon losing would make some sense if they knew it was his last night, but they couldn’t have known Daga was losing or they wouldn’t have set him up as the next challenger for Johnny Mundo.

>(AAA said they were going to announce the Tlaxcala lineup this past week, and did not. I thought it was just a timing thing, and now I wonder if more was going on. AAA had a private and likely free show at Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera tonight. I don’t think there was ever a public lineup, but perhaps Daga or Garza didn’t show for that and that’s when AAA found out? Pentagon Jr. was working an indie in San Diego, which made coming to this show easy to do.)

>The Crash has talked about running 20-30 shows this year. This gives them more full times names to do it. These guys aren’t jumping to work four shows a year either, and it’s not worth the coming war with AAA unless they’re running a lot more shows. This is probably the first of a lot of news for the Crash, and a lot of hard back and forth between the two promotions. Konnan also personally gains a lot of power, since he’ll be helping booking out the two most popular Mexican guys to indie promotions going forward.

>This also does give an indication of what Pentagon believes about Lucha Underground status. Either he’s been assured AAA won’t be able to affect his Lucha Underground status, or he believes LU is a long enough shot to return that he’s not risking much by leaving AAA. If LU had been running tapings this month, or if LU had already gotten live shows and merchandise coming in where these guys were being paid more during the taping breaks, it might have been a much harder decision. This is the cost of LU not getting deals done. Hopefully, Pentagon Dark is still on Lucha Underground in Season 4, but he (and Daga and Garza) now go on the unknown status list with Sexy Star, Fenix and Jack Evans.

>On Facebook, Pentagon confirms he’s out of AAA and completely independent. (I’ve checked the headline to this post.) Pentagon – or, Penta El 0M – says he’s talking to the person in charge of Perros del Mal to see if they’re continue using that name. Earlier, Perros del Mal said they had no idea guys were going to jump and will release official information on their plans going forward. Joe Lider is the only Perros del Mal member who’s still in AAA, so the group would either cease to be or a lot of people who haven’t previously been part of the group will suddenly be sporting the shirt. Daga and Garza Jr. should not have name issues. Garza Jr. appears to have trademarked his own name after appearing on AAA TV with it. Daga used his name prior to coming to AAA.

>We can safely assume AAA will try to fight this somehow. The question going forward is who will be on each side. There’s people still in AAA who associated with Konnan behind the scenes; Hijo del Fantasma and Taya are the biggest names to come to mind. At the same time, the more people who leave, the more likely AAA’s handing out better deals to keep people to stay.

Konnan is shit and is doing all of this to get back at AAA. AAA sucks too, but he cut yet another promo on the company and talks absolute shit on the regular. He always blames other people for mistakes, he's constantly been outed as a liar.

The Crash is cool right now, but part of their appeal is that they do massive shows every so often. Expanding could prove difficult. It's not like things like that never happen. And LU could just pull everyone from the shows, pretty much leaving them with nothing. Not saying they will, but Konnan right now is motivated by anger and revenge.

When it comes to AAA being shit there's really nobody else to blame but the Roldan family tbh. Konnan is very low on the list.

I don't really care what Konnan's motives are as long as those guys get more freedom to do whatever they want . That's all I care about and if I have to listen some anti-AAA promos here and there then that's fine by me. (not like they don't deserve them anyways).

I don't know why LU would pull them from anything though unless it's CMLL related, and even then I don't know how tight AAA and LU are these days.

Overall I'm just curious and somewhat optimistic about the whole thing. It's at least better than what those guys had in AAA so whatever.

Well he's going by Pentagon Dark on an indie booking coming up, so it's possible he can use that some places. I think Penta el Cero Miedo probably sounds better to Mexican crowds (there's some complex-ass names in indie lucha), so he went with that.

I wonder if Pentagon Dark is owned by LU (probably) and the copyright only applies in the US (possible), since the booking he's going by Pentagon Dark is in the UK. In America, I'm not sure what he'd go by. Pentagram Dark would be a good one though.

I'm wondering this because Fantasma is working AAW next month even though it'd probably generate more hype if he worked the Cuerno gimmick.

This story has really become AAA's equivalent of what happened with NJPW last year. Here's a segment of the main event - https://youtu.be/0-cE5KfPi74

>The main event stuff might inform the timeline a bit. In a segment yet to air on Impact Wrestling, the Hardys talk about going (well, teleporting) around the world to prove they’re the best tag team, and there’s a reference to them appearing in Tijuana. That’s referring to this show. Only, the main event as announced could not have appeared on Impact, since Rey Fenix’s Lucha Underground deal would specifically prohibit that. (Impact had to remove many segments including Heranndez when he showed up still under Lucha Underground contract, so they would be hyper aware of this issue.) This suggests the Hardyz/Impact were told at least ten days ago that they’d be getting a TV usable match like what ended up being the main event. Penta 0M, who I’m probably still just going to call Pentagon, already had redesigned masks to sell on Facebook today. Those masks must have taken some time to create. Maybe he just had them ready as a precaution for a while, but it also points towards Penta knowing he was leaving AAA well in advance. It appears those involved had been planning this for a while and were able to keep it quiet.

>SuperLuchas has an interview with Daga, who is complimentary towards AAA but says his time there is at an end. Daga clearly had issues with how he was used, saying he feels he’s at the best moment of his career but has to go elsewhere to grow his career. Daga brings up only being scheduled as a second at Guerra de Titanes and it’s clear that disappointed him. Garza Jr.’s Facebook post about leaving AAA also implies he felt like he wasn’t going anywhere in AAA. He seems excited about being a rudo going forward. Garza also solicits ideas for a new team name, should they not get permission to be the Perros del Mal. (I think they’d be better off creating their own identity at this point, for image and merchandising reasons. Penta/Fenix/Daga/Garza as Perros del Mal will be a hot group, but what name they use will be a hot group if they’re booked well, and they’re better off controlling the name)

>Of the three guys who jumped this weekend, Daga seems primed for the biggest Mexico indie run. Pentagon’s a bigger deal, but he’s also more likely to be in the US. Promotions like Cara Lucha have so far had no issues booking matches with Fenix against big CMLL names like Volador and Mascara Dorada. Daga was a popular indie guy before going to AAA and still retains a lot of that interest. Daga versus Volador, Daga versus Dragon Lee, those kind of Daga vs CMLL matches seem like possible in indie promotions this year. And that’s in addition to matches against other indie luchadors – Daga versus Flamita or Daga vs Ronnie Mendoza could go pretty well too. (That said, Daga mentions wanting to travel to the US and Japan this year.)

>Maybe Pentagon had them made up well before he decided to leave AAA, but it definitely suggests this plan was in mind for a while. He and Fenix are booked as a tag team elsewhere, which may have happened regardless of him leaving AAA.

>AAA has been silent officially, with their own posts on social media promoting a previously recorded segment on Televisa Deportes. Arturo Rivera wished those who left well when asked about the situation, but has pointed out AAA is more than three wrestlers to those predicting doom for AAA. The best defense for AAA right now is these guys are all leaving because they felt underutilized in AAA, which means AAA doesn’t exactly need someone as good as them to replace them. Hijo del Fantasma says he’s staying in AAA. Taya’s written messages supporting her former teammates for looking out for themselves while saying she’s planning on staying in AAA.

>Sexy Star said she hoped she and Pentagon could be tag team champions again. Didn’t Sexy Star say she thought the won an award and not a championship to be defended? Maybe someone just explained it to her later, that’s got to be it. Rey Mysterio Jr. seems to be supporting the defections. Seems unlikely he’ll be back in AAA this year.

>The Crash announced their next show in Tijuana is on 02/25, and Ricochet will be on the card. There’s been talk about The Crash running many times more show this year, which would involve running in other places. Garza Jr.’s greatest help to the group is his name value in Monterrey, so it seems a good bet that’ll be another stop. Roberto Figueroa returning to Konnan’s podcast and mentioning he’s not working with AAA any more means he could now be working with Konnan in that area. (It also may be a situation where the shows are promoted using local promotion names instead of the Crash everywhere; this 02/12 show in Juarez seems like Konnan booked show.)

>LuchaWorld has also has the latest Lucha Report and tries to answers questions about the jumps. Alfredo raises a really good point: Fenix & Penta are in a good spot if LU uses them, and in as good or even better spot if LU lets them go. They’d be right at the top of the list for any WWE Latin American project, and probably would get picked up even if there wasn’t one. They might prefer doing their own thing, but they’d have options. The only other option is for LU to keep them under contract and not use them, and we don’t know enough about their contracts to know if that’s even possible.

>In a lot of ways, LU’s compelled to find a way to make keep using Penta & Fenix because those guys are more valuable to LU than LU is valuable to them now that it’s a bunch of people on the outside. I mean no offense to anyone else who works in front or behind the cameras, but Lucha Underground without Fenix, Pentagon, Sexy Star and (for unrelated reasons) Prince Puma is not Lucha Underground. There still would Dario and Mil Muertes and other characters we enjoy and who are a core part of the brand, but there’s no way to rip out that many key characters out of your story without severely damaging the feel of the show. There’s no other Penta or Fenix LU can grab from AAA and stick in there either. More tangible, there’s storyline reasons by the end of Ultima Lucha 3 which would make it very jarring if those people all were not part of a season 4.

>El Rey/Lucha Libre FMV would be better off starting off fresh with a new concept than continuing without all those people. They surely could continue, but they’ve got an uphill climb in so many other areas that adding another obstacle to overcome pushes the entire concept towards being a waste of time or money. I think everyone wants Lucha Underground to make it work, which means tLucha Underground is going to have to make a way to work with Fenix and Pentagon. And if they’re going to work out something with those guys, maybe Sexy Star or Daga or Jack or even Flamita might find their way back into the fold. I still think what happened this weekend wouldn’t have happened if LU was filming or close to filming, but the long delay until they film again gives them plenty of time to work this out. There’s got to be a positive solution here if everyone works to find it.

Trust me his name is not a big deal at least in Mexico. The fans are still going to call him Pentagon out of habit regardless.

In the US it should be fine too since everybody's already used to saying "cero miedo" anyways. Unless some announcer tries to translate his name/says "pentagon zeero emm" or some stupid shit like that.

If you're a regular lucha libre watcher you're already used to these weird name changes or just weird names in general so it becomes the least of your worries tbh.

>Penta El Cero Miedo
HORRID name tbh. Even for us spanish speakers sounds awkward and lame as fuck. He should've known better, he's already established himself as the most popular luchador around regardless of his name. He's all about looks and attitude, going by his old name Black Dragon would've smarter.

Forgot to post about AAA's press conference from this past week but here it is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttJ3wkTGebA&feature=youtu.be

>At the AAA press conference, Dorian Roldan noted the Perros del Mal name is trademark of the family. Those statements suggest the Perros told the ex-AAA guys they couldn’t use it. We don’t know if Joe Lider will still use it. It would look silly for Lider and/or new people to be Perros del Mal and hopefully this is the end of it. We’ll find out on Friday.

>TripleMania tickets went on sale yesterday, and the first four rows are already sold out. I figured they would go fast. AAA has super fans like any other promotion, who are going to find a way to pay to be there for the biggest show of the year. Maybe the rest of the building will be slower, but maybe not. They filled the place with Pagano/Psycho last year, Wagner/Psycho is already a bigger deal. Even with nothing else on the card, AAA will do fine on that show. The rest of the year is trickier, but this show seem should fine.

>After the press conference, Dorian Roldan told R de Rudo “there is great possibility” the Lucha World Cup is run in a different country this year. This came up last year, with Dorian saying he’d prefer to run it in the US while Victoria was leaning towards Japan. Victoria foots the bill for this event, so it’s ultimately their call. I got a question about this on Twitter if California was a possibility, and it got me thinking about the MMM conversation with Eric Van Wagenen. Van Wagenen hinted at live shows late spring/early summer out in California where the hosts live. I presumed he meant Lucha Underground branded shows, and maybe that’s just what they are. But, that description also would fit a May date for a Lucha World Cup. I dunno; there’s not enough to here to be even slightly confident, but just a thing to consider.

>AAA also handed out their current taping schedule for the year at the press conference. You can see the pre-TripleMania press shows here. The post TripleMania has a few more tentative dates (though probably everything is subject to changes) and I’m adding it to the big AAA chart. This stuff really interests me, and the stuff that I found the most interesting.

  1. Rey de Reyes, AAA’s next big show, appears to be on 03/19 in Monterrey. That show is at the bull ring and a later show at Arena Solidaridad. They’re not running Arena Coliseo Monterrey (Multimedio’s venue.)
  2. AAA is coming to Tijuana on 04/21. It’s their first show there since 2005, and interesting since that’s the The Crash’s hometown. (It’s probably with local promoter EMW, since they’ve been bringing in AAA talent regularly.)
  3. There’s a big break between tapings in late April/first half of May. That’s where the Lucha World Cup has gone in previous years, and that sort of break fits with AAA traveling elsewhere for a week.
  4. There’s no obvious Verano de Escandalo date. It really doesn’t fit the calendar to have one – TripleMania’s going to be the biggest thing in mind after the World Cup – but there’s a bunch of tapings who could use the name.
  5. AAA’s taping quickly after TripleMania, four days later in San Luis Potosi. That might allow them to keep most or all of TripleMania off free TV.
  6. The Hard Rock show is September 16, the same time as usual.
  7. Heroes Inmortales is either in Pachuca or Queretaro as listed now
  8. They don’t list the December locations, but it does appear they plan on returning to traditional year ending Guerra de Titanes instead of starting the year with it (as has happened the last two years.)

>I haven’t counted it up yet, but there seems like more tapings this year. That means more tapings which only last one week, which is probably a good thing with their current roster depth. AAA is in Mexico State the next couple of tapings and runs Neza in July, but that’s it for Mexico City area adjacent shows outside of TripleMania. They could always add Naucalpan or Juan de la Barrera later on, but it’s not there now. There’s a couple of other unusual places, and the weirdness of going to the relatively small state of Tlaxcala three times in about six weeks, but it looks like a normal AAA year. Most of the shows listed are sold shows – the local promoter is paying AAA a fee to bring them in, with the idea they’ll sell enough ticket to profit. These deals were surely made before the departures, but do indicate the local promoters still feel like AAA’s a solid investment.

To be perfectly honest, there is no promotion in Mexico doing great women's wrestling. Watch out for Keira on the indies, Zeuxis and Princesa Sujei in CMLL, Fabi and Mari in AAA, but unlike the guy above, I don't think the Mex female wrestling scene is thriving, so they're fairly likely to be paired up with bad opponents. Really the only consistently good advice I can give is to watch the womens matches on the Chairo cards

It's a bit of a weaker card compared to January's show, but Ricochet/Horus vs Fenix/Daga sounds wild, and I'm liking Flamita's reign with the Cruiserweight belt. TNA is developing a relationship with The Crash so it makes sense to at least bring in a handful of guys. You can do better than Jarrett and Eli, but once guys like Eddie and Lashley and EC3 and Kingston and Moose start coming down it'll be worth it. Maybe NOAH guys will show up too if TNA can bring its new partners together.

Also, I like the Evans/Mack/Mascarita pseudo-stable, but that's just me.

Somewhat north of the border, but I'd consider this more of a lucha show than an indie show (especially based on the ZSJ/Mendoza match I saw from this company; the atmosphere is very much like a lucha indie). Top three matches on this card sound awesome, although I'm not sure if any or all will be taped.

I know if I lived in Texas I'd consider going for Violento Jack vs Pentagon alone, not to mention Laredo, Guevara, Mendoza, and Tiger.

>Krudemmon of R de Rudo says he talked to Netflix Latin America and they say Lucha Underground will debut in Mexico on March 15th. Netflix’s Latin America Twitter account just says March. Meanwhile, Netflix US says they have no info on whether Lucha Underground will be added. I do not believe that’s a response they would make if it was going to be added next week and still there’s nothing official more than odd Twitter replies (no formal announcements.) I do not think LU will be on Netflix anywhere on the 15th. March seems more reasonable.

doing some research because of how fascinating the AKE fed is, turns out it's Tijuana lucha extrema fed that is also associated with different martial art classes and low level tijuana MMA. They still do bigger shows with top deathmatch workers, but from 2006 to 2014 (probably still do them in secret) they were running what basically was Lucha Extrema/Battlarts/FMW hybrid with no ring out of some seedy tijuana martial arts school

This is a video of a guy doing a Karate demonstration in front of mexican kids karate students but the demonstration is basically just him shirtless kicking through lighttubes and no selling lighttubes shots

Crazy Frank vs HS from 2012, they have a crazy brawl all over the dojo, they bleed all over the crowd, throw chairs all over the place, they do some of the most unprotected tube shots ever, but the finish is just them brawling starting to brawl back again into the crowd but HS gets a surprise shoot armbar in the middle of the crowd out of nowhere and Frank taps out

Got some Pentagon Jr. news:

>Los Reyes del Biutful interviewed Penta el Zero M in a podcast posted today. LigerFever and therealfredo translating a lot of it. Of note to Lucha Underground fans, Penta says the company is the best he’s ever worked for, he’ll be present for whatever they need him for, he has no problems with Lucha Underground and he’s 100% sure he’ll remain with them.

>Penta noted AAA gave him the opportunity, but it was him who made the most of it. He feels he represented AAA well wherever he went, and they did not do the same for him. He claims 7 out of 10 indie promoters he’s talked to have said they don’t want to work with AAA. Penta felt now was his peak moment and he had to make the most of it. Penta says he knew Daga & Garza were unhappy, but had no idea they were showing up that night. He hopes AAA adds strong luchadors to the the Perros del Mal so it can continue on, but his group had decided to not use the name after their first appearance.

>Penta says he found a good lawyer, and he’s registered his name, his new gold/black mask, and even his tattoos. Fenix & Garza came up with La Rebelion and Garza has registered that as well. Penta says almost no one knew he was going to be there, he only told his wife and the Crash promoter (and not Konnan.)

>Penta says he has not had any contact with WWE, and would want to go straight to the main roster if he was invited there. He feels he’s too old to go to NXT and doesn’t want to be wrestling past the age of 45 anyway.

>Penta was supposed to wrestle earlier today for What Culture Pro Wrestling, facing Drago on an iPPV. WCPW announced that Penta was pulled from the show for personal reasons. Penta’s Facebook doesn’t mention any specific issues, but talked in generalities about blockages and bickering. It’s unlikely AAA would’ve been OK with Drago wrestling against Penta (or any of the Rebelion guys), but it’d be surprising if a promotion went with AAA over Penta in this moment. Drago ended up facing and defeating Hijo de Dos Caras, who was there with Alberto.

He's gone from AAA. He goes by Penta el Cero Miedo (or just Penta el 0M) which is a name he got a trademark for on the DL before AAA could snatch it up. LU contracts are separate from AAA, but AAA probably doesn't want talent that left AAA showing up. The problem is that if LU abides by that they'd have to cut Pentagon, Fenix, Jack Evans, Daga, Sexy, and maybe Cage & Mysterio since I don't know if they're still with AAA. That would royally fuck with LU's potential S4 plans, especially considering (and this is BIG LEGIT SPOILER) that Season 3 ends with Pentagon Dark as LU Champion. Considering what happened to Dark Claw, it'll be VERY interesting to see what happens if LU continues into Season 4.

>Still on LU?
There haven't been tapings since he left AAA. Signs point to him remaining with the company from interviews but
>implying more LU tapings

If they do more tapings it's going to be very interesting to see how they juggle AAA and the giant chunk of the cast that are on AAA Corporate's shitlist.

Here's an update on LU being added to Netflix:

>Lucha Underground will be on Netflix. What day will be on Netflix? I though I knew this morning, now I’m less sure. CNET listed the show as part of the March release schedule, on March 15th. That would be great! However, three other sites I checked, all seemingly working off the same press release, don’t have Lucha Underground listed at all. I suspect CNET was working off the same Twitter news as everyone else. Krudemmon of R de Rudo did have March 15th way back when, so I’m not ruling it out, but don’t make plans for that date or start putting it out there yet. The GLOW series drops at the end of the month, so it’d be great for everyone if LU was on Netflix by then, but we don’t know at this point.

Lots of AAA and The Crash news here:

>The Crash announced the Young Bucks vs Daga & Rey Mysterio on their 03/25 show. That match should be great. Daga having a great match with the Young Bucks would probably be very helpful for his US indie aspirations.

>The Crash says they’ll have the Young Bucks vs Rey Mysterio & Daga on their 03/25, and announced DJZ, Bobby Lashley, Robbie E and Brooke from Impact Wrestling. The last two don’t seem like they work a lot of outside dates. Robbie wrestled in AAA in the past when they were with Impact, and that’s probably what’s happened here. The Crash hasn’t announced anything with Impact (like they have with a California indie to split the cost of brigning in wrestlers), but they’re operating like they’ve got a deal.

>One thing is up in the air is The Hardys as The Crash Tag Team champions. The Hardys announced they’re done in Impact Wrestling effectively immediately, and the Wrestling Observer expects they’re going to WWE and probably soon. The belts are meaningless themselves and The Crash can just crown new champions, but a reason they were champions was to do a tag match with Penta & Rey Fenix. It might have to occur on the 03/25 show if it’ll happen at all.

>El Tijuanense talked to Flamita about his The Crash Cruiserweight championship reign. Flamita say he’s got no problem defending against Famous B, would like to face Mexicans like Laredo Kid and Fenix, and still wants to go against Extreme Tiger when he’s healthy. It’ll be a while before he gets to those, though he does seem open to the idea of defending the title while in Japan.

>Daga and Garza are also working the FULL show the week before in Tijuana. If that stays that way, that shows the independence of those guys to work in the same venue as The Crash for another promotion.

>Arturo Rivera had a couple of rants on Facebook, which R de Rudo noticed. In one, he said the idea that AAA was ever trying to trademark The Crash was false, because there’s no value in the name. He also tried to imply Konnan’s working illegally in Mexico. In another post, he says Robreto Figueroa is angry at him because Rivera compared Figueroa to a rat on a radio show. Arturo apologizes – to the rats. He’s angry at Figueroa for going to TripleMania on AAA’s invite/flight and ending up negotiating a deal with Konnan while saying he was sticking with AAA.

>Later on, possibly unrelated, Konnan went off on Joaquin Roldan as a proxy for all the Roldans (since the other two blocked him.) Konnan’s accusing AAA of sending IMPI (trademark) officials to stop Rey Fenix from wrestling under that name. He says AAA owns Brian Cage, Rey Mysterio and Hayashi money, and all the wrestlers money from the iPPVs and PPVs. And he says AAA wrestlers were working in the US without correct work visas (so tourist visas).

>That last bit has been somewhat publicly acknowledged by LU officials; they haven’t mentioned the tourist visa part, but mentioned the reason Taya and Daga and others missed weeks of Season 3 tapings is because MGM would no longer allow them to use people without work visas. If anyone had been caught using a tourist visa, the wrestlers could’ve been kicked out of the country – at worst, they could be banned from the US for years like Mike Bailey currently is – and there might have been some penalty for LU itself.

>(The visa issues messed up the very first LU taping, causing them to rebook the entire episodes thru Aztec Warfare 1. It’s unbelievable that would be allowed to be an issue again when it was such a colossal mess up the first time, but it obviously wasn’t done right.)

>AAA & those people would know their money issues, but all those guys working with The Crash and not working with the AAA seems to confirm they’re not happy with AAA. (It does suggest that AAA could fix those problems somewhat if they just paid people what they thought they were owed – it’s unclear if AAA doesn’t think they need to, or just doesn’t have have the money.) The IMPE story is really wild; IMPE’s own site says AAA’s trademark requests have not been approved, and I’m not clear on how a trademark official could stop someone from having a wrestling match – but Mexico works in weird ways, and Konnan’s been consistent with his belief that there are people in the trademark office doing things on AAA’s behalf.

>Meanwhile, 126f noted that, in Alberto’s most recent interview with +LuchaTV, Alberto’s position on AAA was “I do not much like the people who work for the company, inside or outside the ring.” That’s harsher towards AAA in other interviews (though more honest.) Alberto’s getting handed a Rebelion shirt at the first opportunity. He says he’s got agreement work more three more dates for the Crash but he’s been busy on the dates they’re running so far. The funniest Alberto subplot is referenced here – Alberto wants to work Arena Mexico at least once again, but CMLL has no interest in paying what Alberto wants.

>Oscar Garcia Jimenez, AAA’s lead graphic designer for the last eight years, mentioned on Facebook that he’s no longer with AAA. That post makes it sound like it wasn’t his decision. Graphic designer is probably too narrow of a description: he was the guy who designed their poster and artwork, but he also created the looks for characters like Drago and Taurus. AAA is a small business so he was handling a lot other roles; I think the last time his name came up in the news was the Ludxor/Nino de Ebano injury story, when there was an dispute about which person cause Ludxor to miss a doctor’s appointment. You would’ve seen Oscar on TV as the guy doing the haircuts for the last few years. I’ve seen him at the AAA offices and he was always friendly. I’m sure he wouldn’t remember this, but he’s actually one of the first lucha people I met in Mexico – we were at Super Astro’s restaurant, and Oscar and Cibernetico just happened to stop to say hi to Astro. It’s a pretty stunning moment when you’re walking around and you just run into people who work for AAA in the first hour you’ve been in the country.

>The timing of this in relation to the La Llave de La Gloria logo issue makes it seem like they’re related. I don’t really know anything here, but I don’t think that’s the case. I’ve been thinking it had to be Record or Reforma who stole the logo, because AAA had Oscar and the little I knew of Oscar, I was pretty sure creating a new logo would’ve been something he would’ve been excited to work on. I’ve enjoyed his work in AAA and I hope he gets to do more of it somewhere else. Meanwhile, AAA has a small office, and it seems like it’s getting smaller all the time.

Just watched the match myself. It feels like one long-extended rib on Yoshi that Yoshi himself is participating in. It's like, he knows he's shit and so he's just going crazy because he's somehow in the main event of Arena Mexico. When you lose a fall because you were trying to take off your shirt you have to be in on the joke.

I can't tell if that Pedigree was good or not, though. Yoshi did it poorly, but Volador spiked himself like a motherfucker for it.

Well, definitely not now since he left the company and copyrighted his new name under their noses. But before then, I think he could've if they put as much time and effort into him as they do with the other main event talent. That said, I think Penta is a lot more at home in the American/indie style, and in Mexico his best work is hardcore brawls as opposed to what AAA usually does (although they started doing deathmatches with Pagano lately).

He's still with LU since those are separate contracts, but the existence of S4 is up in the air right now anyway. He goes by Penta el 0M now. Fenix, Sexy Star, Daga, and Garza Jr. also left, and Jack Evans got fired for saying one of the top guys in AAA can't work. There's some tension in that LU needs a good portion of the guys who left AAA if they want to go forward but AAA probably wants them to get rid of anybody who isn't on good terms.

That's a little misleading, Jack Evans said La Parka, for a guy who can't really work has been able to get over in every promotion he's ever worked for. He was complimenting La Parka for being a draw despite his in ring abilities never being great.

AAA took it as an insult though and promptly shit canned Jack Evans.

It's actually really easy compared to other indies since pretty much all of it hits Youtube. Outside of Lucha Memes sometimes charging 3 bucks for some matches, pretty much all of it is free. Pretty much everything in Lucha Tube is youtube links, even the CMLL/AAA stuff.

Best stuff is usually CaraLucha, Lucha Memes, The Crash, various companies that run Monterrey, and I guess Elite was kind of indie when it was going (and will if it manages to start taping again). HUMO is female-focused, in fact we watched a HUMO show just this past Wednesday that was pretty good. Solid all-female trios match main event, some stuff with exoticos and even a great intergender-ish tag of Ludark (who is awesome; queen of female lucha indie deathmatches) & Ovett vs Novasonic & Tackle. Had never heard of anybody in the match other than Ludark beforehand but I loved it; Tackle just has an American Football gimmick but he looks the part and has incredible offense. Also, a good female indie lucha match I saw this year was Keira vs Lady Maravilla in a Bull Terrier Chain match from late January.

LA Park is also the king of the indies right now in terms of being incredibly over, working several indies, and having fantastic matches despite his age. His feud with Rush across the indie scene was one of the highlights of wrestling last year, and now he seems to be getting right into working with the guys that just left AAA; Park & Escorpion vs Penta & Daga from AULL and Park & Hijo del Park vs Daga & Black Tauro from CaraLucha were both awesome; something about Park vs Daga just clicks.

Some workers I love to see on lucha indies are Hechicero, Caifan, Ronnie Mendoza (aka Jinzo aka Raul Mendoza from the CWC), Ludark as I previously mentioned, etc. The Crash is a good place to start, however, since they bring in bigger names that Americans would know, probably because Konnan's in charge around there.

The site has a ton of lucha shirts and masks, though. It's in Japan, but seems to have a lot of the shirts that they sell in Mexico. If anybody hasn't been, it's worth a look, but international shipping is 2000 yen (17 USDish).

What do you all think of La Rebelión, consisting of Penta el Zero M, Rey Fenix, Daga, and Garza Jr.? Apparently the name came from inability to keep using Perros del Mal for legal reasons, much like Penta's name change.

On that subject, is it known to what extent their leaving AAA was a consequence of the company's copyrighting names and shit? If so, I guess "The Rebellion" is a pretty suitable name.

This should be interesting:

>Vampiro is now also the Head of Talent Relations for Lucha Libre FMV, Lucha Underground’s parent company, as part of the AAA side handling the wrestling end of the promotion. The job description is “scouting and development, live event coordination, and communication with leagues owners FactoryMade Ventures, Lucha Libre AAA and Promociones Antonio Peña, S.A. de C.V. in Mexico. He will also oversee Lucha Underground talent schedules, travel, and negotiation with 3rd party promoters.” What this means is anyone’s guess; we haven’t really seen anything come of Dorian Roldan being in put charge a couple months ago. In theory, you’d need to go thru Vampiro to booking Lucha Underground wrestlers, but they’ve been getting booked out on their own for years now. Vampiro would seem to be the point man in setting up live shows and seemed to be involved in that end already.

I personally suspect Perro Rights Holder wanted more money then they were willing to pay.

He gets to look like a badass eventually yes, but all that says is that he will show up and do stuff, because that's what he does. He has more of an arc in S2 than just generally going around and fucking people up, but he has some moments. S3 has been better to him, and as someone that's seen spoilers ahead of where S3 took its hiatus I believe it will continue to be better for him. So I guess just get through it and then let things run their course.

https://www.tvinsider.com/137144/johnny-mundo-lucha-underground-netflix/

This has some interesting tidbits. Worth reading the whole thing, but here are the parts I'm most interested in:

>“What it means is purely speculation. Wrestling is about getting eyeballs on the product and putting butts in the seats. At its core, people watch wrestling and entertainment in general to feel an emotion. If people start watching Lucha Underground, which I know they will, they will feel something whether it’s happiness or in awe because of the hard-hitting, acrobatic lucha moves. They will then like Lucha more than any other wrestling show, which I know will happen because I feel it’s the most high quality show out there. It’s going to start claiming the spot of the number one wrestling show in the world. When that is going to happen? I don’t know, but it will.”

Do you think he really believes it'll become the number one wrestling show? Do you think there's any chance in hell that he's right?

>“There are so many things I want to see happen,” he said. “I hope in the future we do some touring, upgrades to the Temple where instead of 500 people there is room for a thousand or 1,500. We could change venues. Touring is exciting. Working with bigger sponsors is exciting. For me, if they change the Temple, they can bring a whole new set of challenges or things for me to jump off of and do parkour and integrate it into matches. The opportunity to do more with vignettes. There is the potential of doing movies about the origins of the stars of Lucha Underground, which has been discussed before by creative. The deal with Netflix can open up so many doors. I’m just really happy to be a part of it."

There are always mask matches being built on the Mex indies, especially if they involve LA Park. Whether those happen or not depends entirely on what promoter decides to shell out the dough to make it happen, and if Park and Pentagon are involved, it'd have to be a pretty big payday. Besides, Penta's run on the US indies depends in large part on him keeping his mask, because Americans would lose interest if he wrestled unmasked. And trying to get Park to drop the mask is something promoters haven't been able to do for at least a decade by now and it hasn't happened yet.

So if I were you I'd just let myself get pleasantly suprised if something like that does happen, but not waste a lot of energy thinking about whether there are any signs or rumours - the only sign is going to be the money changing hands.

There was that time Park had that promo on Pagano and Penta, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it happening unless The Crash has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay deeper pockets than it seems or otherwise pulls a surprise out of its ass.
I could see it maybe happening if The Crash was trying to launch a Maniaversario-type show, but otherwise the amount of money needed for Park to drop his mask is probably too much for any indie.
Penta's said he's open to going to WWE, so maybe he'd drop his mask before that.

To be fair, Caralucha, Lucha Memes and the other big indies usually run a bunch of singles matches every show. I think the Crash card is the result of Konnan trying to overload the show and get a TV deal - sure, it'd be nice if he can sell out despite the 100 bucks for first row seats, but if he was focused on making a profit, he could be running a much cheaper show. He probably also wants to spite AAA a little by running in Juan de la Barrera, but that's incidental; you don't last as long as Konnan has if you're motivated by personal grudges.

Yet despite the stacked card, none of the matches hold much interest for me. I guess if you're more invested in those TNA/US indie guys, it's a more exciting lineup, but I just can't see this being watchable outside of the dumb spotfest 4/6-way matches that could've been run on any Mex indie.

Please no. I don't want any luchador working for Vince "I hate Hispanics"/"LUCHA LIBRE JUST MEANS FLIPPY SHIT" McMahon. And given how he's spoken little to no English in LU, I don't know how good his English is. The guy's just too charismatic to be stuck in a promotion where he'll probably get heat for not speaking English.

The idea of Penta losing his mask, going to WWE, and floundering away the best years of his career in the undercard before being let go is just too much to bear.

I've also seen that people who watch it online have been messaging Netflix asking them to make it available in their country.

I don't know if I agree with Mundo that it'll be a WWE-killer (ha), but I could easily see it becoming a huge fucking international phenomenon.

If Netflix went all in on it and snapped it up as an international Netflix Original (and perhaps help fund and produce a Season 4+) it could become that.

Now,thats completely best case scenario territory, but if they make the show available to 90million+ subscribers, that makes it potentially more easily accessible than WWE.

It's never going to be the big, multi milion dollar company that WWE is due to it technically not being an actual company/promotion..... but if advertised right, and grown alongside something like Netflix's GLOW series, it does have potential to be one of the most watched Wrestling companys.

Well fuck. They better not pull TNA guys from that Crash show coming up. Lashley and Cody's respective matches both looked really cool.

Jarrett stated on Twitter that he's still working with Crash (with other alliances in the works).

Miz was the third wheel in his own title run.

He was always the Jannetty.

With Lucha Underground being a competitor to TNA and the issues between AAA and Crash I really wonder how this clusterfuck will work out.

will konnan just pre emptively bury jarrett, tna, dorian and aaa on the next episode of Keepin It 100?

Guarantee tna did this behind his back. don't know what the net gain is unless AAA is explicitly asking them to come in to help pad out Trios World Cup, Triplemania, etc
Or AAA is trying to butter up to Anthem (is their show still on Fight Network?)

The Crash deal seemed to come about because of the Hardys working those shows. Would be dumb to sacrifice Laredo, Garza and the new LAX for dumb political reasons

just dawned on me: maybe Jarrett is taking his global force ideas for AAA and NJPW and turning tna's ONO PPVs into international partners' ppvs

this might be to get Trio World Cup and Triplemania on American ppv. don't know whats going on with Crash's business plan, but it might just be too impossible to work around all the people signed to LU (and with Netflix its not going away)

>[Zeuxis] may be one of the best wrestlers (not to mention women’s wrestlers) on the planet today, something made all the more apparent when you see her carrying the likes of Estrellita, Sanely, Skadi, Lluvia, Tiffany, La Seductora and others to passable singles and trios matches every week.

Is this accurate?

I've watched a couple of her matches. She doesn't seem all that better than the rest of the luchadora in CMLL. She has a cool look is all. Why isn't Silueta utilized more?

Does anyone have a webm or link to that one Aerostar dive from year or two ago when he literally landed in 7th-8th row? For the life of me I can't find it.
